Why don't you like Kaito?

*rubs hands together* ok LETS DISSECT! buckle up kids this is gonna be a long one-

i just generally think he’s a kind of unpleasant and kind of annoying character. usually i really like optimistic characters (see kaede🥰) but for kaito in many instances his optimism gets to the point where it’s problematic or overbearing and it makes me grit my teeth.

the two cases that stand out to me in particular are his treatment of shuichi in the fourth class trial and his general treatment of ryoma (ESPECIALLY the latter). him getting mad at shuichi in the fourth class trial for being willing to look through the evidence of gonta being the culprit just makes him come off as a massive hypocrite. you’ve been encouraging shuichi this whole time to always look for the truth, but NOW you’re suddenly not ok with it? girl bye

now i completely get not wanting to believe gonta’s the culprit. it’s clear that no one is happy about that, even shuichi. but if they don’t find the right culprit, they will all DIE. kaito and shuichi both know this, but seemingly shuichi’s the only one who understands it.

but you know what? that’s small potatoes ultimately to how he treats ryoma. (i’d like to highlight @gozo-ban for a sec here because she was the one who brought this to light for me with her posts.)

playing through/watching the game it’s clear that ryoma suffers from suicidal depression due to everything he’s gone through (losing his entire family and lover to the mafia, then being thrown in prison after daring to fight back) and how does kaito respond to ryoma’s depression? by calling him a “moron” and an “idiot”. even after his death.

regardless of whether you like kaito or not this aspect of his character is a genuinely problematic one. he’s talking down for ryoma for the “crime” (i say crime very loosely here) of being depressed and suicidal and no?? just no?? you don’t speak to anyone with mental illness that way. you just don’t. but i guess a lot of ppl don’t see it because ryoma’s one of the more underrated and overlooked characters in the game smh

and don’t even get me started on the sexist remarks he tends to make particularly in the japanese version ughhhh(and yes i’m aware tenko has this problem too but at least she’s enjoyable. to me at least)or how he punched shuichi near the end of chapter 1 for…grieving? idk that’s how i saw it

tldr: kaito is annoying character to me and some aspects of his character are legitimately problematic and should be addressed more

once you tell him, he lets out a relieved sigh

shuichi is. very accepting. very sweet. very precious.

“s/o, thank you for trusting me with this, i really appreciate it”

shuichi doesn’t mind your gender since he loves you for your personality. and to him, you’re amazing

shuichi doesn’t own much (i made him poor.) so you’ll have to borrow shuichi’s clothes

(lowkey hc rantaro is a they/them but i’ll go with he/him)

rantaro knew it for a while but didn’t bring it up, he wanted you to be fully sure about trusting him

and once you told him-- he supports the shit out of you

bye to your deadname. he even comes up with hot new petnames for you

will buy you anything. anything you want. he doesn’t care the price he loves you so he’ll gladly do it (i made him rich. shuichi slander)

rantaro is quick to correct when anyone calls you by your deadname or uses wrong pronouns

“i understand, i was expecting--wait, repeat that again?”

he was expecting you to break up with him or something. not this

“oh... so you’re a man, huh. phew, i judged you, seems i still have lot ways to go.”

ryoma is very cool about it!

he’s also quick to correct anyone misgendering you

if they keep misgendering you on purpose, um, do you know how ryoma got the title the ultimate prisoner...? yeah

lol he just gives them a death stare, if you know the sprite i am talking about

“so you finally decided coming out, i’ve been thinking about how you’d tell me.. it went better than i imagined.”

he thinks this is one other thing wonderful about you, and is happy to finally see a new side of yours.

you don’t get what is he saying but you know he’s supporting you in his own way. how beautiful

also don’t even think about having gender dysphoria, i just know for a fact once you do, kiyo will give you all of his love and he doesn’t shut up once he does

kiyo doesn’t interrupt people so he’d probably wait until they stop talking then correct them

“gonta.. is confused. wasn’t s/o a boy from beginning?”

he always saw you as a boy so doesn’t really get it. “so all gonta have to do is use the same pronouns...? no change?”

gonta got the spirit.

y’know what, probably the most supportive one. will say stuff like “gonta doesn’t know what’s wrong.. s/o is a boy, isn’t he?”

also he’s happy cuz now both of you can advance in becoming gentlemen. gonta is proud of you

he lets you borrow his stuff but they’re too big for you anyways, so he just offers you hugs. hugs from the best boy

kaito... is having hard times

he wasn’t expecting this at all when you told him you wanted to meet up. he was expecting to stargazing with you T_T

talks about a man’s passion.

misgenders you for few times but maki is here to punch him whenever he does, and he gets used to it

you have insecurities? no, you don’t. at least not when you’re with him.

roots for you but he’s spacing out the whole time. and is still talking about a man’s passion

kiibo is.. confused about his own gender, but now he’s even more confused about yours

“cool! what are pronouns”

asks you questions all the time so he doesn’t get anything wrong! your opinions included. he gets your opinion on everything

“i don’t really get how this works.. but if s/o feels like a man, then he’s a man.” looks at you to see if you’re nodding

i just know he would never misgender you after you told him. plus gets sassy with people when they do it

i just imagined and i’m gonna do it.
