PLANTSVILLE — After listening to state Democratic Party Chairman Nick Balletto list her accomplishments for less than a minute, the state’s lieutenant governor, Nancy Wyman, could not stand to hear herself praised for another second.
“That’s enough,” she said, her unmistakable voice ringing out across the hall, and causing several hundred Democrats to erupt in laughter and a standing ovation as she made her way to the stage.
Balletto was presenting Wyman with the Ella T. Grasso Leadership Award at the state Democratic party’s annual Women’s Leadership Brunch on Sunday. Wyman, who is retiring in January, brought her typical humor and sass to the event, refusing to talk about the numerous accolades she’s earned throughout her career and instead using her acceptance speech to praise the other women in the room who were being honored in their own right.
The day was a celebration of women in the Democratic party during a year when more women than ever are running for office. Special recognition was given to the women who ran and are running for statewide office this year, including Susan Bysiewicz, Denise Merrill, Dita Bhargava and Eva Bermudez Zimmerman, who earned a standing ovation of her own.
“This is really an honor for me and I’d also like to congratulate all the women that are sitting to the right and left of me, but you’re all to the left of me,” Wyman quipped. “And I’m proud of that.”
Wyman’s career in public service has spanned more than 30 years, beginning with her election to the Tolland Board of Education. In 1994, she was the first woman in Connecticut history to be elected state comptroller. She has served as the state’s lieutenant governor since 2010.
Jahana Hayes, the party’s nominee to represent the 5th Congressional District, brought the crowd to its feet several times during her keynote address, in which she spoke about her decision to run for office four months ago despite having no government experience.
“The women who are being honored here today provided the foundation and inspiration for someone like me to even imagine that I can do this,” Hayes said. “I am fortunate to live in a state where women like Ella Grasso have given women like me the courage to run.”
Grasso was the first woman to be elected governor in Connecticut without having been the spouse or widow of a former . She served from 1975 to 1980.
“These remarkable women all understand the great responsibility that comes with public service,” Balletto said. “They strive everyday to make Connecticut a better place for future generations.”
