huh, the fact that Frieza wanted that fight so much makes Goku's decision to go "I'm bored. You're boring me" even more devastating. (I know that's just the TFS dialogue, I just couldn't remember what he said in canon)

"I'm bored. You're boring me," is more or less what he said in canon. Just with more words.

Frieza's ki has bled out so much at this point that he no longer has any possible chance of winning. There is no more fight to be had here, so Goku tries to quit.

This moment ironically parallels an earlier point in the story, when Frieza decided he'd had his fun but this fight has run its course.

In the earlier moment, Frieza became disinterested and decided he was done because Goku was unable to continue fighting him, on account of having burned out his body using the Kaioken x20 a moment before.

During his six-day journey to Namek (where he found his tranquility), Goku had specifically been using gravity training to toughen up his body so he could withstand higher levels of Kaio-ken. That training paid off in the form of raising Goku's limit to x10, where it had previously been x3.

But when Goku, in desperation, attempted a x20 Kaio-ken Kamehameha against Frieza, it had the same effect on him as his x4 Kamehameha against Vegeta. Backed into a corner, Goku's ki was still willing but his body was shot; So he used his strength to begin preparing that colossal Genki-Dama/Spirit Bomb.

Cut to this point later in the fight and now the shoe is on the other foot. It's Frieza who's flagging and unable to keep fighting - ironically because his body is willing but his ki is shot. This time it's Frieza who's desperate to keep the battle going, and Goku going, "Nah, man. We're done here."

And it's Frieza who's forced to resort to more desperate measures to keep the fight going, long after he's physically unable to sustain it.

With Frieza's desperate resort to kill Goku going about as poorly as Goku's desperate resort to kill Frieza.

It's not easy being the underdog.

Ah, my bad, meant Goku Black! Though there was at least one instance of Fused Zamasu too. But nah, there was an UNCANNY resemblance between some of the panels drawn of Black and Xicor, in terms of facial expressions and poses. If they weren't traced then he VERY religiously used them as a reference and stuck to them. He also reused this from AF, which he took from the filler of Goku's fight with Freeza where he was supposedly popping in and out of Kaioken x20 when he'd strike.

The man is nothing if not derivative, even of himself.

Here’s a drawing I did of Princess Nuri, Kana and Fujika. Princess Nuri and Kana finally fight Fujika, and later on when they get beat up they both power up, Princess Nuri uses Dragon Kaioken x20 while Kana uses Kaioken x20 and beat the crap out of Fujika, at least for a while.

How come Goku never seemed to refine the Kaiōken during the three years training for the Androids? Sure, Super Saiyan had a higher multiplier of power at the time, but there is presumably a limit to how high that multiplier could be. Kaiōken, on the other hand, doesn’t really have any hard limits and you could theoretically crank it up as high as you wanted to, provided you could manage the strain of the technique. And Goku progressed incredibly fast with the technique during the Namek Saga, going from a hard cap of x4 to a cap of x20 and still being at a condition where he could move reasonably well. With three years time, Goku could become a bigger monster with Kaiōken than he could with Super Saiyan 2 or maybe even 3! If they ever needed consistent healing after taking it too far, they could always just bring Dende to earth or ask Shenlong to give them as many Senzu Beans as possible and training related injuries become a non-issue for them.

Toriyama probably forgot the Kaioken existed.

He admitted many times this is why things just randomly disappear.
