(junior year and sophomore respectively - pre-academy university)

Pre-movie events, in the years between Jaeger conception and investment in the kaiju-wall

Akari is researching the idea of developing Drift compatibility, rather than only having pilots with innate compatibility, and needs a test subject ("stranger" despite being dormmates, for a baseline reading); doesn't expect to find they're actually mid-to-high range compatible

Volo is on cryptozoology (k-rypto?) track, riding the line between bio-enviroscience of Kaiju Blue and the (conspiracy) theory of connection between kaiju and dinosaurs

During the drift/Pons system test, there's a bit of back and forth (conquering the 'modesty instinct' and learning each other's mental vocab), until Volo chases the RABIT

Latches onto Akari's memory of the death of her parents (by Kaiju blue poisoning) and after she's forced to relive it she breaks out of the drift and leaves before he can apologize

When the results intrigue professors and catch the attention of the Defense Corps, however, she comes back and presses him into continuing the study; they've been told to "make it work"

Akari's parents were friends and corps members alongside (now Marshal) Kamado; after finding they were Drift incompatible, they separated and perished when one was trapped and the other tried to rescue them

She's taken as a ward to Kamado, but largely reared by Cyllene (who is Conn-Podd Control Officer under Kamado), who taught her about swordsmanship and coached her in kendo, inspiring her interest in Drift psych

Yet when she learns of how her parents died, she refuses to share in the belief that the vague concept of "love" is the secret to jaeger pilot success. Specifically, she thinks that deeply loving relationships find themselves incompatible and break up because of it, but the lack of compatibility doesnt mean any relationship is less loving than another; wants to prove that it's largely simple neurochemistry -- that it's really a matter of understanding and trust

(spoiler, girlie: that's the same thing as love)

Still, she's authentically invested because if compatibility can be "forged" it could mean creating more pilots to join the fight, replacing the exhausted, the dead, and the ones dying of radiation poisoning

This is all learned beat-by-beat, drift-session by drift-session, and eventually Volo asks why she isn't on the Jaeger Academy track (meaning she'd land directly in a Shatterdome team)

She claims at first it's to try and make Drift-tech more widely available, to help the civilian populace; eventually, relents to the truth that she would always be in Kamado's shadow -- and under his thumb

This prompts Volo to share that his (twin?) sister is Cynthia --

"Wait," Akari gasps, cracking her head on the arm of the pons' metal support frame, "the Saint of the Sevii Islands?"

"That would be her," he responds, smirk wry yet his quicksilver gaze dulled to something stormy.

Cynthia, the youngest ever Marshal, stationed now in Kanto to support the entire southern arm of the Pan-Pacific defense; renowned for the weeks-long deployment that saw her Jaeger-hopping to protect the Sevii isles; Drift-compatible with any number of people, without a kill-less airdrop to date.

"So he understands something about being in another's shadow."

PLAN is for a lengthy one-shot, intimate but not necessarily smutty; not going to be tackling jaeger/kaiju fights -- this is just a lowkey, hyperspecific university AU lol

speaking of legendaries, I suspect Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza, the actual legendary birds + Lugia, ect., would Not be Cool w/ kaiju invaders 👀

I love that Guillermo del Toro didn't want Pacific Rim to be all about the military, so he ended up giving the PPDC ranks based on cowboy imagery: ranger, marshall, etc.

It makes me think about some of the most beloved characters by the narrative are the ones who rebel agonist the military way of doing stuff: characters like Newt and Raleigh for example. Because well, characters like Mako and Hermann are rebellious but only due the influence of Newt and Raleigh -- and characters like Herc and Chuck seem to be rebellious in parallel to Raleigh too, like some contagious virtue on the loose.

It's palpable in two of their most famous lines on the movie: when Newton talks about how fortune favors the brave and when Raleigh tells Mako that in real life you make decisions and you have to learn to keep living with the consequences. Everyone around them looks down at them at some point for being what they'd call reckless, but Raleigh and Newt are aware of the risks, they are not kids. Which is funny because in contrast, they even do that to each other: the perception of the other as a fool of some sort.

And yet, without Newt and Raleigh tendency of disobeying, they'd all be dead and gone.

Without Raleigh insitance on having Mako as his co-pilot and his demand to get G. Danger deployed, the Double Event would had been the catastrophe that ended their last run to the Breach before it started. Without Newt's crazy plan of drifting with a kaiju, they would had perish due the lack or information.

Twice Raleigh piloted solo and twice Newt drifted with a kaiju. In one of those ocassion they had to give a part of themselves that they would never get back (a part of Newt's sanity, Yancy's life). After the first time, both emphasize to Pentecost that they can't do it again. They can, technically, but now they've done it once and it hurt.

Still they do it and it saves the world.

The man who was good for nothing except to hold his own on a fight and the guy who was destined to love fictitious monsters in every universe except that one. In any other world or timeline, Newtom and Raleigh would have been the losers. They were still somehow the losers on Pacrim, a has-been pilot turnes into a builder and a scientist perceive as another sick kaiju groupie. They weren't disciplined like the others yet they were a bit obsessive, they were the sort of ambitious that makes people doubt, stubborn and arrogant in their convictions, totally unapologetic in knowing themselves.

Sure, they have to pay the price in double, but at the end of the day, they are champs of fortune: they do the impossible and survive to tell their stories, breaking every rule and winning the faith of those around them.

Thinking about how perfectly a PacRim au would work with stancest (heavy PacRim spoilers below the cut)

Stan and Ford find out they're drift compatible due to being twins, and they enlist into the program to get away from Filbrick and because it carries that sweet taste of adventure and glory they always craved as kids. They get to the program, run some simulators and some bo staff fights, lo and behold, they're exceptionally compatible by all known projections (wonder why. couldn't possibly have anything to do with their deeply repressed and undying love for each other combined with their shared memories growing up together. nah.)

Here they also meet and befriend Fiddleford, an engineer working on the Jaeger program. Things go great for a while, until Ford starts expressing desire to study the Kaiju, veering dangerously close to idolizing them for their biologically perfect design. Stan is vehemently against this and only wants to focus on killing them. They have a huge fight and they both get kicked out of the Jaeger program.

Stan fucks off and learns to make a living chasing kaiju landfalls and selling off uncannily convincing fake Kaiju parts and materials at obscene prices to whatever Kaiju groupies roll through town in the wake of destruction to worship their "gods." (They remind too fucking much of Ford.) He pockets enough for himself and donates the rest to the victims of the attacks.

This goes on for a few years, until a Kaiju attack obliterates his hometown and kills his parents, brother, and sister in law. Leaving only their 2 young children, only 7 years old. Twins. Dipper and Mabel Pines. (Yes I'm screwing with the timeline here. It will happen again.) He doesn't have any other way to make a living, and they don't have anyone else to go to. So Stan sells El Diablo, uses the money to buy a junk RV, fixes it up, and takes the twins with him on a cross country adventure of heroic conning. Along the way, they encounter Soos, Wendy, Candy, Grenda, and the rest.

In the meantime, Ford works with Fiddleford to develope a pons that can allow him to drift with a recently dead kaiju. It takes a few years, but they finally create it. (By this time Ford has become the highest knowledge of Kaiju biology in the world, and Fiddleford is leading the entire Jaeger engineering program.)

They drift together.

For Ford, it's ecstasy, euphoria, sublime, righteous. Finally he has been proven right, finally he knows why all the Kaiju tissue samples are genetically identical, finally he knows that there is a higher being behind the Kaiju. And that higher beings name is Bill. (Not really. His name would be impossible for any human mind to comprehend, drift or no. But Bill is a good enough substitute.) And Bill explains [insert Bill's offer here].

Unfortunately, Ford and Fiddleford's minds and memories weren't very compatible to begin with, much less with an dead alien brain from another dimension in the mix, and as the weakest willed of the 3, Fiddleford suffers permanent brain damage and amnesia.

The strength of that drift with Bill allows for them to experience ghost drifting, aka drifting during dreams. Bill teaches Ford how to make an upgraded version of the pons with less risk, and how to preserve a Kaiju specimen indefinitely so as to drift with him over and over again. The repeated drifts build a permanent neutral bridge between Ford and Bill, and Bill becomes able to take control of Ford's body, even outside of the drift. Ford becomes less and less focused on the Kaiju attacks and the people dying, and more lost in all the wonders of the multidimensional planes bill shares memories of with him.

With the lead engineer of the Jaeger program mentally obliterated, and the chief Kaiju biology researcher being possessed by a Kaiju, and the lack of support from the world's governments in favor of building a wall across the coast to block the kaiju, the Jaeger program slowly starts to collapse.

That is, until the day Ford discovers [insert horrifying Bill revelation here].

He panics and calls the one person who might be able to free Ford's mind from bill, the one person with whom he had a statistically impossible level of compatibility. The person he was the most terrified to open his mind to.
