my interpretation is that Sate was born with some kind of medical condition that would have lead to her death (or severe incapacitation of her body) if she didnt receive some kind of treatment. being raised in Issoudan she wouldnt have been able to switch to a new body (or it was too expensive), so instead they heavily modified the one she was born into, essentially making her a cyborg.

on top of that i see it as a metaphor for her character. she is very stoic and quiet, hiding her true feelings from the people around her, and taking ruthless actions. she is also described as having a "doll" body, making her literally and metaphorically doll-like: showing little emotion, being uncaring, and simply following orders in her undying loyalty to one person (Popo). this part of her character, as well as her actual body, only falls apart at the end of the series.

Sate is a character who seems very cold and heartless on the outside, but inside she is more soft and vulnerable, with her physical body being a representation of this.

Okay but like, is no one gonna talk about the truth behind Sate' s body??

When Fanfiction authors say Jou can't speak English, specifically when it's used to let Kaiba flex on him in some highbrow situation.

Okay this is less egregious than the hair dying one, I just think people who do this are missing Eyes to See and I have come with a better solution that will sate both my need for Not Humiliating Jou at every turn and also the Kaiba Is Always Better instinct.

First of all I very much ascribe to the Jou is half American on his dad's side headcanon, and as he lives with his dad it would make no sense that he doesn't speak English at least passably if that's the case.

Plus you can't really look me in the eyes and tell me that Kaiba being right about Jou not understanding his Serious Business Conversations at whatever fancy party is funnier than Jou revealing, like weeks after he starts attending these things, that he's completely fluent in English and has just been playing dumb because Kaiba never asked (this also allows for cute moments where Kaiba says nice things about Jou that he usually wouldn't because he thinks Jou doesn't understand if you're so inclined)

However! You can have both that and the Kaiba Superiority. Because a very common problem for kids growing up with two languages is that one is the public language that they learn in (Japanese, in this case) and one is the language that they just speak with the parent that speaks it (English). This can result in a phenomenon wherein they're practically fluent in two languages, but, especially if the writing systems are different such as Japanese and English, they can't read the one they just use at home.

Consider: Jou is practically native-level speaking in English due to his American father (talking to him, watching shows in English, whatever) but he can't read. Then you can have Kaiba know Jou can't read English and assume, fairly reasonably, that he can't speak it either and you can have a ball. OR learn that he can speak English and this causes problems later because he assumed (again, fairly reasonably) that he can read it.
