Their breakup announcement just took place yesterday Anon. Of course people are going to be discussing their breakup, when they think they broke up, who they think they will date next, theories behind why they broke up, etc. This is just all very normal and natural behavior whenever there's a major breakup that occurs in any fandom. 😊 I think you should cut the Anon (and other fans) a little bit of a break. I'm sure in the future, talk about Kaia will eventually dissipate little by little, the more time that goes by. But to think that Austin fans are just NEVER going to talk about Kaia is a little unrealistic imo lol... I'm sorry. Fans still bring up Vanessa, Lily Rose, and such. These women will always be a part of Austin in some way (maybe not Lily so much lol). Those are women he dated. He has a history with them, so you can't really change that. While I do agree you that fans should be relieved that we can now focus more on Austin and not the leech lol, I think it's a bit unrealistic to believe that her name will just never be brought up again in life. I also feel that we should give fans at least a week (a week!) to discuss the breakup freely w/out being judged for it. We have had to endure this painful-looking relationship for nearly 3 years. Let us at least have some time to rejoice, discuss, and laugh about the turn of events lol. 😅

Eventually, there will come a time when the discussion will become overkill and I will gladly mention something if it ever gets to that point. But when Austin's breakup announcement just came out yesterday, I think it's only fair to give fans at least a week to process, discuss, and freely share their feelings on the issue and their thoughts looking back on the relationship w/out being judged, berated, or bashed for it.

It's unnerving that we can no longer enjoy photos of Austin alone without someone starting to find nonsense details that necessarily lead him back to Kaia. Shippers who start to say that since he was photographed in the middle of who knows what street in New York then he is definitely staying in Kaia's apartment, shippers who say that since he is on the phone, then he is definitely talking to Kaia (as if she were Austin's only contact in his phone book, crazy stuff). Not to mention this damn tote bag. I mean, ok maybe he bought it when Kaia collaborated with that bookshop, or not, maybe he simply bought it on his own because he shopped in that shop. It could be that they both bought one on their own, at two different times or at the same time, who knows, but the fact is that this thing belong to the past, and Austin is using that tote bag simply because at that moment it was useful. If we want to talk about tiny details then why don't we highlight the fact that we have recent photos of both of them during their free time, and yet they are not spending it together, outdoors or in private, but in two cities kilometers apart?? Austin I know you will never read this, but could you kindly tell your PR team to get off their ass and release an official statement once and for all and explain if you and Kaia are still together or have you broken up for good?? Just to know if we can uncork this fucking bottle of sparkling champagne, or go back into the darkness again and ask ourselves why you're still wasting your time around that skinny leech.

Exactly, I was surprised when they started speculating that he was with Kaia just because of those photos crossing the street 😂, everything that has happened this month has been too revealing, she has had free time and she has not spent it with Austin. Regarding the bag, they are not the same, they are just purchases at the same bookstore, but let's suppose that if Kaia was given it when they were fine, why would he have to stop using it when the relationship ended? Kaia with her Bottoms co-stars in LA lol...such a coincidence she's put together when the paps just catch her and other up and coming actors on an outing. Imo this is her way of trying to start being seen as a serious actor, considering she has 2 premieres in September if I remember correctly. Hey man, I love your work!!! it’s some of the most well written things on this hellscape of a site. I hope you don’t mind if I throw out this ending to the Narnia twins! Hope you have a good day!!!

Mc shows up to the castle and is sneaking around to find the kids. She finds kaia in the library, crooning something in a language Mc heard jade speak before, happily reading a spell book and practicing ice magic on a squirrel, enjoying her role as a sadistic princess and adoring daughter.

Finn is in a indoor swimming pool, swimming around in a form you have never seen, with a long eel like tail instead of legs and stripes running down his chest, he seems to be talking with himself about how uncle floyd would love it here and when will dad be back with mom.

MC decided to get her kids out when jade is sleeping and slinks off to hide. When night falls and MC goes to Finns room to get him, instead of Finn by himself, it’s him, kaia and jade. The kids run up and hug mom, squeezing her and chirping about how happy they are that’s she’s here and how nice their dad is. Then jade moves in, telling his children that MC is probably tired from the day and how it’s bedtime for both of them anyways, ruffles the twins hair a bit and escorts Mc back to the bedroom that she and jade once shared. Jade is silent as stone, locking the door and chaining Mc to the bed, curling up against the struggling Mc he bites her neck and says in a flat tone that the next one he gets to name.

Nine months later the twins are curled up together in a nursery, cooing and fawning over their cute ‘n chubby baby brother named Floyd. He of course looks like a mini version of uncle floyd with droopy yellow-grey eyes and a hair stripe on his left side.

You can add or change anything you want to this ending, maybe add a bit of spice, anyways I love your work and hope that your phone charger works in any way and both sides of your pillow are cool!!!

My writing? You wrote a full on novel with far more detail than I’ve ever put in my posts on here! You guys have the skill here! Still, those two hopes are the most touching wishes I’ve ever received, I have tears in my eyes!

Poor MC, what a horrible ending for you! You aren’t sure how you managed to sneak into the castle, the staff are as discreet as they were when you was trapped here all those years ago and the thought of being captured has you on edge with your nerves shot to pieces. Every sound, movement, the smallest of twitches could have you being seen with the ice not hiding you.

You know you can’t get the twins out of the castle straight away, it’s still light meaning that if you’re caught you have less chance of managing to escape the castle. As much as you hate being in here a second longer than you have to, you know you have to wait. You have a while until nightfall, so decide to sneak around to at least catch a glimpse of them to make sure nothing terrible has happened to them whilst they’ve been here.

What you find...you can only hope is happening because Jade forced them to. Seeing Kaia’s eyes as she all but tortures the small creature in front of her with her magic. All you can do is tell yourself that she’s only doing it because she doesn’t have a choice, Jade must have told her to! Finn talking to himself about how he wishes you were with his dad must just be him reassuring himself out of fear, how could he not be nervous seeing as he’s in a different form, you were shocked and it wasn’t your body so it must be worse for him!

So when night falls and the halls go quiet, you make your way to the familiar corridor of room knowing Jade would likely keep them close until he felt he could trust them. There’s only one room that seems to have any level of noise when you decide to make your move, knowing it was probably Finn’s since he tended to stay up later headed towards it to collect him and find Kaia, but when the door opens your heart jumps into your throat.

Despite being sure you saw him leave, Jade is in the middle of the room with your children by his side, Kaia with a spellbook in hand and Finn holding a broken piece of statue. You want to rush in and snatch them away from him, to yell at them to get away from him, but your body is frozen and the words lodged in your throat. You can barely stop yourself from bursting into tears when they both run up and hug you, saying they’re glad you’re home. It’d been only a few hours and yet they already saw this place as home as opposed to the house you’d raised them in. In a single moment your years of effort and stress and fear feel pointless, and that feeling of utter hopelessness allows the first tear to drip down your face.

When Finn asks if you’re alright Jade steps in. It’s been a long and tiring day for everyone, you’re simply a bit overwhelmed by emotions knowing that you’re safe and together again. It’s getting late so the twins don’t fight when he tells them it’s time for bed, there’s plenty of time left for everyone to get properly acquainted and explore. The grip he keeps on your hip is enough to stop you breaking down into hysterics, you can’t expose Kaia and Finn to the reality of your relationship with Jade, not until they’re much older, so you let him lead you out of the room to his own not too far away.

But when the door shuts and you’re alone together, the change isn’t unexpected. The kind smile is now much more sadistic, his grip bruising as he pushes you onto the bed. You not only ran from him, you stole ten years of his childrens’ lives from him, to make up for your mistake you’ll give him a child he can be there for. The cold mental of the chain he traps your ankle in bites into your skin, but that discomfort is soon overshadowed by the searing pain of his sharp teeth sinking into your neck. Did you really think you would just return and everything would be fine? No, you need to be punished for your actions, some self reflection in complete isolation in a freezing room should do nicely which would give him some one on one time with the twins while you deal with the consequences of your actions. The twins don’t question him saying you’re sick due to the sudden temperature shift and don’t want to pass it on to them, he lets them visit just before you’re about to fall asleep so you aren’t conscious enough to try and tell them to run, when you do fall asleep, Kaia always forms ice flowers in the vase Jade placed by your bedside to help you feel better and carry on her training.

But once they’ve left to go to bed he wastes no time. To carry on your punishment he’s rough when he takes you, he doesn’t bother listening to your pleas as he tears the clothes from your body, sinks his teeth into your neck, shoulders, chest, anywhere he can reach, and mercilessly plunges his fingers into your heat, dragging his thumb across your clit and making sure to catch the sensitive bud with his nail. But he doesn’t let you cum, he’s not here to satisfy you until you realise your wrongdoings, even after he sinks his cock into you it’ll be hours before he lets you. Only when you’re completely incoherent, barely able to put together a few words to beg him to let you cum, your nerves on fire, only able to focus on the painful feeling between your legs, and this happens every night until you’re pregnant again.

He’ll stop being quite so cruel to you at this point, he doesn’t want to risk losing the baby so he’ll increase the temperature of the room again, he lets you get adequate sleep, it’s 9 months of respite from the way he treated you. But don’t think that once the baby is born that if you’re attitude hasn’t changed that he won’t do this all over again. You’ll soon learn that if you refuse him then the only way to avoid his cruelty is to be pregnant with his child, so how long will it be before you give up? Kaia and Finn were so happy when Floyd was born, and as a ruler the more descendant he has the better so don’t think he’ll hesitate in using pregnancy to break you mentally. You simply need to accept the happy family this is.

in which some cats don't value the power of a good education, some cats spent too long in the vicinity of a good education, Leech has a bad dream and totally overreacts, and we meet an old drinking buddy and, well, drink

- While we wait for Kaze to calm down and come back, Akito tidies his office, and we ask him some more questions now he's lucid again. He says he's spoken to the moon but it just said nonsense, numbers and distances. He didn't recognise any of the magic Dream Ito did, but that doesn't mean it isn't spells. He also explains that Ito changed his thesis last minute to be about modern applications of Kaishi magic, and Sakura volunteered to be a subject. When it went wrong, her personality was destroyed and she become Koreshimeru, a warrior for Ito.

- When Kaze returns he tells us he saw the Cursed Rose, Whakaia's ship, who we worked with on the original mission to kill Dain and Ito. He also says Hiro is coming, which makes Akito panic and check his reflection. The rest of the Bastards get lunch while Kaze's parents reunite after 5 years, but Kaze follows in cat form and listens. They have a stilted, uncomfortable conversation, but towards the end Hiro laughs at a bad pun Akito makes.

- We go to find the Cursed Rose, but Kaia isn't there. Instead we're greeted by the tabaxi siblings of the crew, Rum and Malt, who tell us that Nuwi has flooded due to the moon, and insist that they are there to enrol in the university, "he's studying books," and "she's studying numbers!" Infact, the whole crew seems to have suddenly taken an interest in education: "Last time we met, your captain was a pirate." "No, she's a business major!" We lie in return and say that we're also applying as mature students, until Kaze cuts the crap and casts Suggetion to make them tell the truth - that they're trying to revert the apocalypse.

- Leech, tired for some reason even though they weren't involved in the battle, has a nap on the ship. While they do, they dream. Once again, it is a memory from the point of view of Angrboda, in which she and Leech are riding seahorses far from the city of Sovatn on a mission from Jarl Anor. At the mouth of a huge trench, Leech promises to protect their ward, and they descend. A deep voice welcomes Angrboda and the fact that she brought an ally, and reveals information about the Jarl - that he hasn't lost an election in 1400 years (since the voice's domain was smashed), and his real name is Ubaid, a servant from the plane of water. The voice, we realise, is Otamr, and he offers to team up to take down the Jarl, if Angrboda removes the barrier in the temple. Angrboda says, "Yes."

- Leech wakes up, and hears Angrboda's voice in their head. They beg her not to accept Otamr's offer, which will lead to the fall of Sovatn and genocide of the Old City, but is overjoyed to find that Angrboda can her them - the pair can speak together now. She insists that she wants to go home, to fix Sovatn, and blames the Bastards for coming and leaving without helping to fix the city. Leech agrees to go with her there, but lets her explain to the Bastards what they are doing.

- The rest of the Bastards see "Leech" wake up, and announce they are leaving to fix Sovatn, since we weren't actually helpful when we were there. The others are confused - they closed the breach, they killed Otamr's avatar, and they try to argue that if we don't fix the moon first, there won't be a Sovatn to repair. They even offer to come with Leech to put things right afterward, but "Leech" disregards all of this and simply jumps off the ship. Everyone is extremely upset by this sudden abandonment. Salvio and Elinor have a drink to deal with it, while Kaze picks the strongest member of the crew to have a fight with.

- Meanwhile KAIA (played by the same person as Leech) finds Akito's office empty and returns to the ship while facetiming her pirate fiancee Bando who's back in Nuwi. She wants to know why the fuck we're here (and punching her crew), but readily admits her own goal here, since we're old anti-imperialist fighter buddies: she wants to kill Ito, steal his planar key, and find her grandmother. But before we do all that, we all get drunk together.

Rowena's feet were pale and wee, dusted with light, golden freckles. There was nothing you loved more than her padding up to you and propping herself up on the tips of her toes to give you a kiss.

On the tips of her tiny, lovely, adorable toes.

Barefoot, she always looked smaller. There was a vulnerability to it, a tenderness you couldn't quite explain. You just knew it was there, and you found it impossibly endearing. Without high heels to add a few inches to her height, she was almost miniature. It was cute, a sentiment she didn't seem to share, pouting and whining whenever you said it out loud. She didn't do cute — she was adamant about it. Said it made her feel like a child.

Too bad (for her, at least) it was true.

You took her right foot in your hands. Your hands gently trailed over its top, tracing the veins protruding out of her skin like spiderwebs. Her skin was as soft as a baby's, smooth, perfect. You never tired of touching it, of touching her, all of her, for every piece of her was just as perfect, just as beautiful, just as inviting.

Sprawled on the bed, Rowena watched you. Her eyes traced your movements, anticipation building up in them. Her mouth was curled into a smirk, a teasing, wicked one. While feet weren't something she was particularly interested in, she knew hers were a turn on for you. There was no harm in letting you play with them. You always rewarded her more than generously. Besides, having lived for almost four hundred years, she welcomed something different. Plain old vanilla was boring. Kinks were much more fun, even if they weren't her particular flavor.

You'd indulged her yesterday. Tonight was your night.

Your finger brushed Rowena's toes. They were the cutest things, little, round, one of your favorite parts of her. Her nails were painted red, deep, crimson, sexy. It was your request. The color made them look all the more delectable.

You pressed a kiss her big toe, then, slowly, carefully, took it into your mouth. You sucked on the tiny digit like a vampire leeching off someone's neck. After a moment, you released it with a wet plop. The taste, sweet, a tad salty, so, so Rowena, lingered in your mouth. You wanted more. You wanted your mouth on her, all of her. You wanted to taste every part of her until there wasn't a single bit left untouched, unkissed, unmarked. She was yours, and you wanted her to know it.

You let out a small moan, the thoughts overwhelming you. Wetness pooled between your legs, soaking the sheet underneath you. Rowena made you weak. You didn't know how she was doing it, but the mere thought of her was enough to make you come undone. The woman was magic, more potent than any drug. Once you got hooked, you couldn't stop.

You didn't want to stop. She was an addiction you would gladly surrender your life to.

"Something the matter, dear?" Rowena asked as if she'd read your thoughts. Her voice was teasing, as mean as the smirk that stayed plastered over her face. She knew what she was doing to you, and she enjoyed it. Your weakness was her high.

"I want to eat you," you said.

She laughed, and there was a trace of mockery, of challenge in the lilting sound. "However will you deal with such a vulgar desire?"

"I wonder," you said, flashing a smirk of your own.

Your mouth latched onto her next toe. This time, before releasing it, you bit down gently, enough to leave a tiny mark. Rowena hissed, startled, but as you started sucking on the digit, her hisses melted into happy, pleasured moans. You repeated the process on the remaining three toes, then took her other foot and did the same.

By the time you were finished, Rowena was a trembling mess, back arched, dripping wet. You couldn't help a satisfied smile as you admired the scene before you. Pride bloomed inside you like a fire burning bright and hot, filling you up with warmth. It settled between your legs, begging to grow, begging to be released.

Oh, it would be. And so would Rowena's.

You kissed each foot one more time before crawling forward to lock your lips with Rowena's. It was going to be a long night.

I'm sorry, but when I see all these photos and videos of Austin interacting with fans and paparazzi on set, I always think of the photos of the last time we saw him with Kaia, which was at Gracie's concert last month, and of how paradoxical the two situations seem when compared. I mean, think about the photos of him wearing the mask while she's stuck to him like a leech. Many shippers came up with various excuses, saying that he was wearing it at that moment because he was afraid of getting sick and therefore delaying the filming of Caught Stealing, or that he was annoyed by the presence of the paparazzi. But then when you look at how Austin acts when he's alone, you realize it's none of that. He wasn't wearing the mask because he was afraid of getting sick, I mean, from the video we have we can see that he wasn't wearing it inside the concert, it's now known that masks are more useful inside than outside, and then even if he had gotten sick I don't think it would have been all this tragedy, I'm sure that the productions take this inconvenience into account given that the actors are human beings too. And then he wasn't wearing it because he was annoyed by the fact of being photographed, if he were a person who gets annoyed by these things, he would make both fans and paparazzi leave the set instead of stopping to have a chat with them, to hug them and take selfies with them (this is also linked to the fact that Austin is not afraid of getting sick, because it could very well happen that someone unconsciously gives him a cold for example). Having said that, I am firmly convinced that he was wearing the mask because at that moment he would not have been able to hide his obvious expression of disgust and repentance for having lent himself to that girl's circus for the umpteenth time. So if there's anyone who annoys Austin, it's not the fans or the paparazzi, but Kaia. I therefore hope that after that episode Austin has thought about it carefully and has definitively put an end to this now painful relationship...and judging by Kaia's latest video, where she talks about a sudden breakup that surprised her, I could be right, who knows 👀. I apologize for my long rambling, but it was a thought that had been in my head for a while now 😅.

Shippers can try to make excuses for that all they want, but they just look dumb. Pictures and video footage do not lie.

Even when a camera is not being shoved in their faces, and they don't even realize they're being photographed, Austin and Kaia still look miles apart from each other, and the chasm is so painfully obvious.

Great point about the mask thing. I also have another theory that he wears a mask with her because he wants to lessen the value of the pictures taken with them together. Same reason for him wearing the towel over his head while at the beach with her in Cabo rofl 🤣

He never did that with Vanessa, but then again, maybe that was just because he wasn't as famous back then. Who knows. All I know is that he only does that with Kaia, and maybe he just really wants to keep his relationship life kind of separate and private from his work life. I can understand that.

It's wonderful to see Austin giving all himself to the fans for photos and hugs, all smiling and kind, you can see that he does it because he wants it and doesn't have any problems. It's nice to see him busy on the set of the film, giving 100% of himself, to create a performance that I'm sure will leave its mark. This man is now completely in his habitat and is happy. Nothing to do with the shit show we saw at the beginning of the month, him all sulky and clearly uncomfortable, and in some photos even with his face covered by a mask, with that leech of a nepo baby attached to his arm. The difference is huge and I hope as many people are noticing. I sincerely hope that Gracie's concert was the last show of this circus to air and that all the next photos we see of Austin will be of him surrounded by people he truly loves and is loved by 🤞😍

I love how happy Austin is with everyone (except Kaia). I feel the same way about the show they did at Grace's concert, Kaia being in Los Angeles confirms that they are more than separated.

Shadows and Thrones, Chapter One

Hey everyone, thanks for showing interest in my book! I’ll be adding a link to this and subsequent chapters on my masterlist page. Hope you all enjoy. 

Chapter 1

Everything began to fade away; the bed beneath me, the press of the metal headset in front of my eyes, the quiet birdsong outside my window. The world faded to black as my mind was teleported to somewhere far away and nowhere all at once.

The world of Shadows and Thrones, the newest VR game on the market. The darkness around me started to swirl with muted color, consolidating into a generic female avatar standing a few feet in front of me.

Dozens of menus popped up, offering height, weight, hair color, race, skin color, fighter class, and more things to choose from than my overly-excited brain could settle on. A grin on my face, I set to work.

My boots touched down with a soft crunch in a beautiful pine forest. The trees stretched tall and green above my head, swaying gently in the breeze. The sharp scent of pine needles touched my nose, and I couldn’t contain a tiny gasp. Full-dive virtual reality really was amazing. A thrill rushed in my chest, a familiar ache to run and climb and explore every inch of this new world.

‘And then what?’ a little voice whispered in my head. ‘You’ll explore this world, it’ll be all fun and exciting for a few months. It won’t make you happy.’

I shook my head. “Shut up.”

I was here, the sun shining in a dappled pattern over my avatar’s skin, a whole new world stretching out before me. I didn’t have to be thinking about all that, I shouldn’t.

I took a deep breath through my nose, taking in the scents of pine and damp earth and freshly baked bread, somewhere off in the distance. Probably a town, one with a tavern.

I could find some other players, try to join a guild, or even just a party for a few days as I got used to things. Maybe people might want me in their guild, if I didn’t mess up too much.

Squaring my shoulders, I walked towards the direction of the smell. As the trees thinned out, I could see a village across the fields of grass, chimney smoke rising into the clear blue sky. Perfect.

The tavern was filled with players of all races crowded around tables. An NPC barmaid pushed past me, delivering mugs of mead to a drow and some kind of water spirit race, before bustling back to the bar.

Everyone seemed to know everyone else, groups of friends and old guilds meeting up. A girl in low-cut armor lounged in the corner, hitting on whoever walked by, and acting super friendly to any girl players who wandered past.

I steered clear. I’d played enough video games to know who those kinds of players were.

But as the tavern filled with more players, my hesitation grew. My eyes drifted to the notice board. I could put up a sign, saying I needed a guild to join, but that could yield...uncomfortable results.

So I sat on a bar stool, picking at my long fingernails, for what seemed like forever.

After nearly an hour, I sighed and resigned myself to just making a notice board post and hoping whoever picked me up wasn’t too creepy.

‘You really think anyone’s going to be interested with that? Just log out and stop wasting your time.’

I winced, tearing down the notice. I mentally called up the menu screen, reaching for the logout button.

I tapped it. Nothing happened.

I frowned. Tapped again.

The tavern still bustled around me.

Maybe the headgear took a couple minutes to shut down? The instruction manual said it was supposed to be instantaneous, but this was a new game. They probably had to work out a few bugs.

I waited five minutes. Ten. Fifteen.

Then, my stomach flipped. An elf player stood, reaching for his menu, and disappeared in a flash of light.

He was logged out instantly. Was something wrong with my VR gear? Or the game?

I hurried over to the table he had just left. A dwarf man and some sort of cat woman looked up at me expectantly.

My stomach dropped. “H-hello.” I managed. “I, uh, have either of you had a problem logging out? I saw your friend did, but mine isn’t working.”

The dwarf rolled his eyes. “It’s not that hard, noob.”

He pulled up his menu, pointing to the logout button. “See? Right here.”

Frustration boiled inside me. “I know.” I snapped, pulling it up. “But it doesn’t work.”

I demonstrated, the button still yielding no results.

The cat-woman frowned, looking at my screen. “That’s weird…”

The dwarf sneered. “Go figure it out yourself.”

The cat-woman smacked his arm with a disapproving glare, before looking back to me. “I’d go to the city hall. There are some friendly NPCs who can help with any glitches.”

I nodded, thanking her.

So I just needed to get bug sorted out. That was all. Everything would be fine. But I couldn’t shove aside the sinking feeling in my chest as I left the tavern and into the coming sunset.

Something was off.

“What the hell do you mean?!”

The enraged roar was what greeted me as I walked into the city hall. An elf man was yelling at an NPC with a politely blank expression.

“You do not meet the requirements to log out right now.” the computer-generated man said calmly.

“If you say that one more time--”

“You can’t log out?” I interrupted. Which I immediately regretted as he whirled on me, green eyes blazing with anger.

“Figure that out all by yourself?” he snarled. “The stupid logout button doesn’t work.”

I shrank back. “Mine doesn’t work either.” I managed. “That’s why...why I’m here.”

He looked at me with narrowed eyes, before moving aside.

“Talk to him,” he ordered.

I hesitated, before walking quickly past him, in front of the NPC.

“Hello,” I said quietly.

He smiled politely, his settings reset to talk to me. “Good evening, adventurer. How may I help you?”

“I can’t log out.” I explained.

He smiled. “Alright! I’ll pull up your profile and see what I can do. Please stay patient.”

His expression went blank again.

“This takes a while.” the elf explained. He kept fidgeting, picking the sleeves of his long cloak. From his clothes and the starter’s bow slung over his shoulder…

“You’re a ranger, right?” I asked.

He looked down. “Oh...yeah.”

I nodded. “It looks...nice.” His avatar did look good, it was clear he had spent lots of time on it. His skin was light brown, with long black hair loose around his shoulders. His eyes were dark green, like the pine forest I had spawned in. But his eyes kept darting around impatiently, never settling on anything for too long.

“Did you need to log out for something?” I asked.

He grimaced. “I...yeah. I just got a message from my sister a few minutes ago, she went into labor. I’m gonna miss the birth of my new niece or nephew if this bug doesn’t clear up.”

I winced. “Ugh, I’m so sorry.”

He shook his head. “Don’t apologize, it’s not your fault.” he scratched the back of his head. “Sorry I was yelling.”

I smiled. “It’s alright, I understand. You’re probably freaking out a bit for your sister, right?”

He gave a tight, stressed laugh. “Yeah. But I mean, her husband’s taking her to the hospital, and my mom is with her...she’ll be okay. It’s just irritating.”

He shook his head, as if trying to clear out his intruding thoughts, and held out his hand. “Anyway...I’m Lorson Clearwater”

I shook it. “Risty Blackburn.”

He grinned. “Okay, that’s a cool name. And a neat avatar.”

I couldn’t help my smile. “Yeah, it took me an hour,” I admitted.

My avatar had long, dark red hair, turning to golden blonde as it reached the tips. Her skin was dappled with freckles, and she wore simple black leather armor under a reddish-brown cloak. A couple simple daggers were strapped to her belt. But the best parts were the ears and tail. They were those of a fox, and the same red-brown as the cloak, tipped in white.

“Kitsune is a pretty cool race. I figured I’d go classic, though,” he admitted, looking down at his avatar.

“Nothing wrong with classics.” I reminded him cheerfully.

He smiled, some of the tension seeming to leave his face. “Right? Elves are awesome.”

“Ms. Blackburn, I’ve finished your scan.” the NPC interrupted.

I turned, heart pounding. “Thank you. What did you find? Can I log out?”

The NPC smiled. “You do not meet the requirements to log out. Thank you.”

Four hours later, Lorson got a message from his mother that his sister had given birth to a healthy baby boy. She was annoyed he hadn’t been there. He told her something had come up, that there was an accident, but he was okay.

Lorson and I couldn’t get any more answers out of the NPC, so the two of us had gone out of the hall, and sat on the marble steps. He’d halfheartedly suggested we go try out the combat system, but I’d just shrugged. The excitement I’d felt for the game’s release had been replaced by a cold, leeching dread.

What if I tried dying?

“You can’t log out either, can you?”

A voice made him look up. Two more players stood in front of him. A girl with short, dark purple hair plopped down on the steps, visibly fuming. Her long staff and dark blue robes meant she was a mage or some kind of spellcaster.

“This is BS.” she snapped.

The other player with her smiled apologetically at Lorson and I, before sitting down next to her.

“We’ll figure it out, Kaia,” he said gently. His heavy armor, golden hair, and broadsword marked him as some sort of tank, probably a paladin. “We’ve already sent a troubleshoot request, we just need to wait.”

He sat down next to the girl in the blue robes, giving them an apologetic smile.

I glanced above his head, the name there was “Edun”.

“I was supposed to video chat with some friends tonight, but the stupid NPCs say I can’t log out!” Kaia snapped. “What the hell are the “qualifications for logging out”? What does that even mean?!”

“I’d be happy to explain, miss.”

We all looked up to see a generic human player standing a few feet away. I frowned. His player name and HP bar weren’t visible, which I didn’t even think was possible.

“And who the hell are you?” Kaia sneered.

The man smiled. He had a kind, if not generic face. “My name is Adrius. I’m the reason you’ll all be staying in this game, for the foreseeable future.”
