I finally finished playing the yttd emotion route AND the mini episodes (I had only played through the logic route beforehand), and it made me want to doodle a bunch of characters I haven't drawn yet. Except for the top two. I just wanted to draw Joe and Ranmaru.

I remember watching YTTD playthroughs on YouTube after 3-1b came out and seeing a lot of people in the comments hating on the logic route and going on about how Nankidai must have intended for it to be some sort of “punishment” for choosing Sou over Kanna and like. I’m sorry. Did you not see the appeal of Ranmaru going beast mode. Did you really feel punished when Sou got offended at the drink machine because Sara lied about it having soup. Ranmaru murking one of the Yabusames was a small price to pay for “That would make it look like the interior of your head Miss Sara 😄” .

I had first seen a play through of yttd (Michaela laws) and she did the emotion route (reko/kanna).

I found out that I could just play the game for myself so I started playing from chapter 3A. I decided to skip the recap and just play. I chose the alice and shin route because I hadn’t seen it before.

I pressed on like “oh Sara is kinda fucked!” Thinking that was normal. And then the scene in the classroom happened with ranmaru and I was thoroughly baffled.

And then Alice fucking died and I was sad all day.

YTTD: 'Goddess of Victory/Angel of Death'

I've been replaying YTTD and one of Keiji's lines to Sara (Chapter 2, Part 2 in Miley's Room) stuck to me:

"Are you going to be our goddess of victory... or our angel of death? / It doesn't sound too bad to bet my life on that."

And it got me wondering whether or not this may be foreshadowing for the events yet to come; in particular, the outcome of the Emotion Route and Logic Route in particular.

Spoilers for all chapters below the cut!!

I think that the 'Goddess of Victory' title will fit Sara in the Emotion Route, and 'Angel of Death' will fit her in the Logic Route. So far, the Emotion Route, Sara is prioritising teamwork and the group's wellbeing and survival, whereas in the Logic Route, she is having an inner conflict with herself as she's having thoughts of betraying the group. Thus, I've assigned the title 'Angel of Death' to her in the Logic Route, and 'Goddess of Victory' to Sara in the Emotion Route.

So what does this mean for the routes?

If this line was actually foreshadowing the future events of the different routes, then from inference we can determine what may/may not occur.

Goddess of Victory and the Emotion Route

Goddess of Victory - 'Goddess' implies admiration, worship, and leadership. Victory, in this context, I assume meant surviving the death game WITH all of her friends (or at least the surviving cast we have currently - Kanna, Keiji, Reko/Alice, and Gin). And we do see this kind of admiration from fellow participants, especially considering Sara has taken her place as the 'leader' of the group. Thus, it can be inferred that in this route, Sara would lead them all into victory. It would perfectly align with the title 'Goddess of Victory.'

Angel of Death and the Logic Route

Angel of Death is easy to define - an angel (messenger of God, holy, good) bringing about death. The contradictory nature of an 'angel' and 'death' implies that in this route, Sara would continue to act 'good'; act as the group's leader, continue her charismatic act, etc. all while bringing about death. And we've already seen this. Using her charisma, she's manipulated Ranmaru to kill the surviving Yabusame sibling. Extrapolating on this, it would imply that the other surviving candidates (Keiji, Gin, Shin) die as a result of Sara's desire to survive.

And while we're at it, I'll go and look at the second part of the quote:

"It doesn't sound too bad to bet my life on that."

This could also be foreshadowing regarding Keiji's fate. While it's pretty speculative for me to be like "in this route they live/in this route they die" because of this line I'm more confident in saying that maybe in Emotion Keiji lives and in Logic Keiji dies as a result of this 'bet' he's placed on Sara. If she becomes the Goddess of Victory, he survives at her side, his trust in her paying off. If she turns out to be the Angel of Death, he dies at her side, his bet lost.

as graduation winds down, tsukishima kei stands in the courtyard, looking out over karasuno high once last time. he holds his diploma tightly in his right hand, waving goodbye to some of his friends, rejecting the idea of having dinner with them, knowing that they will get a lot of chances to do so, as the majority of them will go to the same university, except for those like kageyama, yachi and hinata who have bigger dreams that require moving cities or even countries.

kei’s usual calm facade is in place, but inside, he feels the weight of the day, the end of high school, of volleyball with his team and of seeing you every day.

graduation is still one year away from you, getting into your third year this april. kei spots you waiting for him at the edge of the crowd that is going out of one last time and others like you, who still have years of high school to go through.

as he approaches you, he sees your beautiful eyes shimmering with unshed tears and his hearts soften even harder. he walks over and without a word, you fall into step together, wandering off-campus towards the tsukishima household. as you walk, you clutch the sleeve of his jacket and he lets you, walking in silence until you are in his house.

kei leaves his diploma on the living room as you walk upstairs to his room. the sight of the bare walls and some of his belongings in boxes makes you feel sad as you sit down on the floor, waiting for him.

as kei enters the bedroom, he gives you a cup of tea and you mutter a quick thank you, carefully leaving it on his bedside table, waiting for it to get cold.

“why’d you have to go and get all emotional?” he murmurs, though his voice lacks any of its usual sarcasm. there’s a quiet vulnerability in his tone as he pulls your hand into his.

you let out a shaky laugh, looking down, avoiding his gaze. “i… i don’t know. i know i’ll see you again. you’re not moving that far and it will only take me a bus to get to you but… it’s hard, thinking about not seeing you every day.” your voice breaks a little, and you quickly swipe at your eyes.

“you know what? i’m glad i won’t have to change my route to walk with you from your house to school”

you playfully punch his arm and he laughs, muttering a it’s a joke softly. for a moment, kei is quiet and when you glance up at him, you’re surprise to see a sheen of tears in his own eyes. kei clears his throat, looking away as if it he was embarrassed but his finders hold onto yours a little tighter.

“come here,” he says softly, reaching down to his jacket, fumbling for a second as he pulls off the second button, pressing it gently into your hand. you stare down at it, heart squeezing. kei holds your chin with his hand, pulling it up to stare into your eyes, his voice barely above a whisper. “this… i’ll be waiting for you, you know? i don’t want anyone else.”

your hand closes tightly over the button, tears finally slipping down your cheeks. before you can even mutter a thing, kei pulls you into his arms, holding you close. you feel his heart beat, fast and strong and you place a hand on his chest as his hand gently cradles your head.

“i hate this too,” he whispers against your hair, his voice rough, breaking slightly. “leaving without you.”

when he finally pulls back, there’s a tear slipping down his cheek, and for once, he doesn’t seem to care that you see it. he just reaches out, brushing a thumb across your cheek to catch your tears, as if that’s all he can do to hold back his own.

he pulls you closer into a gentle kiss, a soft brush of lips that deepens as you lean closer into him, tilting your head slightly as his hands move towards your jaw and the back of your neck, holding you as close as possible.

the kiss grows more urgent, as if you were pouring every feeling into it. both of your breaths quicken as your lips move together. as kei pulls backs for just a fraction, he opens his eyes, forehead pressed against yours and he smiles, leaning in again to peck your lips.

“you’re the one for me,” he says, voice low. “i’ll wait for you at university.”

“okay.”

“tell me you’ll be thinking of me as much as i’ll think of you.” he closes his eyes, voice shaking. “tell me you’ll miss me as much as i’ll miss you.”

“kei…”

“because… because i always think about you, when i’m awake and when i’m sleeping, I always dream of you. even when we are in the same city, or in the same building but different rooms, i miss you. i miss you when you are at extracurriculars or when i am in practice and i can’t see you, even if i had just said goodbye to you.” he sighs, “because i love you.”

you clutch the button closer to your heart as you kiss him again,

“i love you too.”
