Watch: PM Modi's Diwali celebrations with jawans at India-Pakistan border
Following the tradition he started in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali with Indian soldiers on Thursday. PM Modi reached the India-Pakistan border in Gujarat’s Kachchh, spent time with jawans, offered them sweets, wished them on Diwali and enquired about their well-being. After spending an hour with jawans in Kachchh, PM Modi left for Bhuj to attend another event.

Gujarati (Kutch) Speciality
The scenic Maliya Bridge, which spans salt marshes often teeming with birds, creates an enticing impression of the gateway to Kachchh. Yes, this region is perhaps the least appealing in terms of climate, and it is certainly the least populated. It is well and truly off the beaten path. The various communities, such as Rabaris, Ahirs, and Meghwals, each have a distinct dress that is still an integral part of daily life, and each practice a specific craft, which is fostered and promoted by a number of co-operatives and non-governmental organizations. Kachchh offers some fascinating opportunities for adventurous, life-affirming travel for the adventurous traveler willing to forego such luxuries as hot showers and reliable bus schedules.
About Kachchh: The great and little Ranns, which flood seasonally, surround Kachchh. The Gulf of Kachchh, a large inlet of the Arabian Sea to the south, has a marine national park and sanctuary with 42 islands and a variety of reefs, mudflats, coastal salt marsh, and India’s largest area of mangrove swamps.
The Kachchh Peninsula is relatively high, with a thin layer of volcanic lava covering the often saline soil. There is little natural surface water on the dry and rocky terrain, but there are numerous artificial tanks and reservoirs. Intensive grazing has prevented the development of the rice vegetation typical of neighboring Sindh in Pakistan, and there is only sparse woodland along the frequently dry river beds. Some of the lakes serve as important wintering grounds for migratory birds such as pelicans and cormorants. In the north, the Rann of Kachchh disappears into the Thar desert.
The saltwater of the Gulf of Kachchh invades the Rann in June, and the Rajasthan River pours freshwater into it. It then transforms into an inland sea. Kachchh effectively becomes an island. When migratory Flamingos arrive near Khavda in December and February, they spend the winter on the Great Rann. Sand grouse, pelicans, and avocets are also present.
When the monsoons flooded vast areas of Kachchh, farming was forced to be abandoned, and handicrafts flourished, not only expressing artistic skills but also providing a means of subsistence. There is mirror work, Kachchh appliqué and embroidery with beads, gold and silver jewelry, gilding enameling, and colorful wool felt namda rugs.
Best Of Time: The best time to visit is between late October and mid-March. If the Rann of Kachchh and the desert wildlife sanctuary of the Great Rann were not separated by a road, they would form India’s largest contiguous tract of protected wildlife territory. The Rann is mostly a saline wilderness, broken up by belts of grass, bushes, acacia, and thorn scrub that form islands during the monsoon. The salt works, which clear the vegetation, release toxic effluents into the wetlands, and pollute the air, pose a serious threat to the area. Prosopis juliflora, a fast-growing thorn scrub, is destroying most other vegetation.

Planting trees does not necessarily mean a forest is being restored.
---
But efforts to increase global tree cover to limit climate change have skewed towards erecting plantations of fast-growing trees. The reasons are obvious: planting trees can demonstrate results a lot quicker than natural forest restoration. This is helpful if the objective is generating a lot of timber quickly or certifying carbon credits which people and firms buy to supposedly offset their emissions. [...] [I]ll-advised tree planting can unleash invasive species [...]. For more than 200 years India has experimented with tree plantations, offering important lessons about the consequences different approaches to restoring forests have on local communities and the wider environment. This rare long-term perspective should be heeded [...].
Britain extended its influence over India and controlled much of its affairs [...] from the mid-18th century onwards. Between 1857 and 1947, the Crown ruled the country directly and turned its attention to the country’s forests. Britain needed great quantities of timber to lay railway sleepers and build ships in order to transport the cotton, rubber and tea it took from India.
Through the Indian Forest Act of 1865, forests with high-yielding timber trees such as teak, sal and deodar became state property. To maximise how much timber these forests yielded, British colonial authorities restricted the rights of local people to harvest much beyond grass and bamboo. [...] Meanwhile plantations of teak (Tectona grandis), a species well adapted to India’s hot and humid climate and a source of durable and attractive timber, spread aggressively. [...]
---
[G]rasslands and open scrub forest gave way to teak monocultures.
Eucalyptus and other exotic trees which hadn’t evolved in India were introduced from around 1790. British foresters planted pines from Europe and North America in extensive plantations in the Himalayan region as a source of resin and introduced acacia trees from Australia for timber, fodder and fuel.
One of these species, wattle (Acacia mearnsii), first introduced in 1861 with a few hundred thousand saplings, was planted in the Nilgiris district of the Western Ghats. This area is what scientists all a biodiversity hotspot – a globally rare ecosystem replete with species. Wattle has since become invasive and taken over much of the region’s mountainous grasslands.
Similarly, pine has spread over much of the Himalayas and displaced native oak trees while teak has replaced sal, a native hardwood, in central India. Both oak and sal are valued for fuel, fodder, fertiliser, medicine and oil. Their loss [...] impoverished many.
---
India’s national forest policy [...] aims for trees on 33% of the country’s area. Schemes under this policy include plantations consisting of a single species such as eucalyptus or bamboo which grow fast and can increase tree cover quickly, demonstrating success according to this dubious measure. Sometimes these trees are planted in grasslands and other ecosystems where tree cover is naturally low. The result is that afforestation harms rural and indigenous people who depend on these ecosystems [...].
In the Kachchh grasslands of western India communities were able to restore grasslands by removing the invasive gando bawal (meaning “mad tree”) first introduced by British foresters in the late 19th century. [...]
The success of forest restoration efforts cannot be measured by tree cover alone. The Indian government’s definition of “forest” still encompasses plantations of a single tree species, orchards and even bamboo, which actually belongs to the grass family. This means that biennial forest surveys cannot quantify how much natural forest has been restored, or convey the consequences of displacing native trees with competitive plantation species or identify if these exotic trees have invaded natural grasslands which have then been falsely recorded as restored forests. [...]
Planting trees does not necessarily mean a forest is being restored. And reviving ecosystems in which trees are scarce is important too.

Mineral Water Served at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s Pre-Wedding in Jamnagar
The pre-wedding celebrations of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in Jamnagar captured the imagination of the world with its unparalleled extravagance and splendor. Set against the backdrop of Ambani's sprawling estate and conservation effort Vantara, the festivities unfolded amidst a tapestry of luxury and refinement, leaving an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to be in attendance.
From the moment guests arrived, they were transported into a world of opulence, where every detail had been meticulously curated to perfection. Lavish décor, extravagant entertainment, and a culinary experience fit for royalty awaited attendees, setting the stage for an unforgettable celebration.
The guest list read like a who's who of the global elite, with luminaries from the worlds of business, entertainment, and politics converging in Jamnagar to partake in the festivities. From tech titans like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg to music icons like Rihanna, the gathering was a testament to the Ambani family's far-reaching influence and prestige. Along with a galaxy of Bollywood stars in attendance including Shahrukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Katrina Kaif, Vicky Kaushal and Deepika Padukone, every detail was meticulously curated to perfection. The guest list also included prominent figures such as Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Bhutan’s Queen Jetsun Pema, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, and Saudi Aramco chairperson Yasir Al Rumayyan, among others.
Throughout the event, guests were treated to a sensory feast, with the finest delicacies from around the world served with impeccable flair. From gourmet cuisine prepared by world-renowned chefs like Ritu Dalmia, and other chefs flown in from around the world, every culinary offering was a testament to the host's commitment to excellence. We read a lot about the catering budget which was rumored to be around 200 crore rupees, so once can imagine no expense was spared.
A total of 2,500 dishes were meticulously curated, ensuring that none of them were repeated during the three-day extravaganza. Here’s a glimpse of what was on offer:
Breakfast Menu: A delightful array of 75 options awaited guests.
Lunch Menu: Over 225 types of delicacies were served.
Dinner Menu: A whopping 275 dishes graced the tables.
The culinary experience was not limited to Gujarati cuisine alone. The menu featured a diverse range of flavors, including Parsi, Thai, Mexican, and Japanese dishes. Additionally, guests were treated to traditional music, with popular Gujarati singers Kirtidan Gadhvi, Diljit Dosanjh, Arijit Singh captivating the audience with their exceptional performances. The pre-wedding events promised to showcase the splendor of Indian culture, and guests were also presented with Bandhani scarves crafted by women artisans from Kachchh and Lalpur in Gujarat.
While Instagram and Reddit deep dived into the food and delicacies, many noticed how Ambanis have been championing Make in India for their event especially when it came to the water being served. Mukesh Ambani is Asia’s richest man valued at over 114$ Billion, who could’ve ordered any mineral water from around the world, but the Ambani family chose to serve Aava natural mineral water.
Renowned as the "Evian of India," Aava Water's reputation precedes itself, owing to its exceptional quality and naturally alkaline composition. In fact, the prestigious Danone Group expressed interest in a joint venture with Aava Water back in 2007, recognizing its unparalleled superiority among India's natural mineral water sources. Aava has been India’s highest selling natural mineral water brand for the past decade and is even served at the President of India’s estate in Vigyan Bhavan. Aava stands out among India’s other natural mineral water brands since it is naturally alkaline with a pH8 and bottled with zero water rejection.
Aava water is also extremely focused on sustainability which was the perfect fit for the event held in Jamnagar that also highlighted Anant Ambani’s love for nature and conservation efforts for wildlife. The water brand is extremely transparent about its bottling processes and focuses a lot on water conservation, groundwater recharge and efficient recycling. In fact it is one of the few plastic neutral water brands in India. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2005, who was the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Aava was the first natural mineral water to launch in India south of the Himalayas and today is India's most premium and internationally awarded and recognised water brand.
Beyond the extravagance and grandeur, the Ambani celebrations were also a testament to the family's deep-rooted values and traditions. The festivities kicked off with the traditional practice of ‘anna seva’, where Anant Ambani, Radhika Merchant, and other family members served traditional Gujarati cuisine to the villagers at Jogwad village near the Reliance Township. Approximately 51,000 local residents were provided meals as part of this noble initiative. They made sure no expense was spared for even the dayro celebration and made sure to serve Aava natural mineral water to its guests.
Amidst the lavish spread, Redditers were quick to notice and appreciate Aava Water being offered to guests in sustainable Glass Bottles, a refreshing respite from the indulgences of the evening. In the end, the pre-wedding celebrations of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in Jamnagar transcended the bounds of mere luxury, embodying the essence of a timeless celebration that will be remembered for generations to come. As guests departed, their hearts and minds filled with memories of an unforgettable evening, one thing remained abundantly clear – the Ambani name had once again set the standard for sophistication and refinement, leaving an indelible mark on the annals of history.
