I recently rewatched Jyu Oh Sei, and I wanted to commemorate finishing the anime with a picture. I decided to go with Zagi, since his outfit is the sexiest, and I thought he'd look nice in my style. He didn't particularly leave an impact on me (although I did remember him from when I first watched it as a young teen), but I have a thing for drawing bad boys in catsuits. I would like to read the manga, but the physical manga in English has gotten pretty pricey, since it's rare. If anyone knows where I can read it online, let me know, because I can't find it anywhere. Maybe I can get it in Japanese for a more affordable price. It's interesting to me that the anime came out in 2006 even though the manga was from 1993! Someone loved it enough to adapt it 13 years later! I can definitely see a bit of 90's flair in the anime. I was considering drawing Third as well, since I like his design.

Each territory in this world is gutted and rebuilt by the priorities of its leader. This colony on the outer rim is both cold and alive, like the humming motor tucked inside the heart of a machine. Technology runs its cities, builds its skyscrapers, and manufactures the oxygen Wenhan holds in burning lungs as he sneaks between shadows on a suspended launch platform. His steps are quiet and his hands are quick as he climbs up to eye level with a sleeping jaeger corralled by metal staircases and unattended balconies. Even if he was caught in the engineer sector after curfew, all it would earn is disapproval and a warning. They were running too low on pilots to follow protocols.

Wenhan glances at the bracer strapped to one wrist flashing silent and red.

10 minutes left before that curly haired scientist wandered back to check on his bot. His pilot wetsuit was starting to feel like a sweatlicked second skin. 

From the outside, the angles and smooth shell of the jaeger is familiar. Sinew wires wrapped into steel joints as unassuming as every other bot he’s had to pilot. He scales the ladder into the pilot's cabin, hands hovering over a foreign control system that stays unlit even as he hits the usual sequence of switches. He tucks curses under his tongue and grinds his teeth. The neural connector panel is cold against his back and there’s no hum of a reaction underneath skillful hands. 

Cold. Dead. Everything on this planet was so still. Suspended and waiting to borrow energy from something or someone warm and alive. He’s starting to forget how the touch of wind felt on his face from home. The way grass left skin itching for days if he fell asleep under the sun. 

“You could’ve just asked if you wanted to see it.”

Wenhan looks up, and there’s a face so warm and alive peering down at him from the open hatch. Taeil’s eyes are bright and curtained by dark messy curls. He lazily tucks his chin over his arms and looks smug. 

“You’re supposed to be in the bathroom for five more minutes.” Wenhan continues trying sequences of switches.

“I can finish in one.” Taeil drops into the cabin, peering over Wenhan’s shoulder, as if the other man’s failure was more interesting than reporting an unauthorized boarding to superiors. 

“If you really want to brag about your foreplay…” 

“I really admire your propensity for being a egocentric dick, Li, I really do– but it won’t work no matter which way you fondle it... I thought you weren’t supposed to leave the infirmary for another week.” As Taeil smooths fingertips over his unlined forehead and admires the bruised reflection of Wenhan’s concentrated face in the unresponsive control panel. “New wrinkle on stonehenge.”

“Shouldn’t you be sleeping so you can fail basic training again?” Wenhan leans back into the pilot seat, exhaling through his nose. “Nepotism can’t save your ass forever.”

Taeil flips a switch above them both, and the cabin lights up with a soft white glow. The controls remain dark. 

“It won’t work because it’s not finished, idiot.” As he mutters almost inaudibly. “Like I’d make it respond to your biometrics on purpose... Now get out of my fucking robot.”

Wenhan rams shoulders with Taeil on his way out. He lets his legs dangle over the hatch, watching the other check over the jaeger’s insides. For as long as he’s been here, all his relationships have been shallow. It was easier to detach himself when multiple pilots were dispatched and few made it safely back into the station after a fight. Some part of him hoped Taeil failed training on purpose so the mouthy engineer would never have to pilot. It would be so much more boring around here without a thorn in his side. 

What would he do without a challenge.

The sector's dimmed lights flash a bright white and then darken to red, followed by an alarm that shatters comfortable silence. Wenhan immediately drops from the unresponsive bot and moves to board another, but his feet stumble into empty air as ears are blown out from an eruption of shattered metal walls and heat.

The suspended balcony creating a pathway between jaegers had snapped in half from the explosion, sending wenhan sliding forward into a death drop to the ground floor. The momentum is enough that he swings into the railing and grips hot metal to delay the fall, but his descent had already stopped. The jaeger that had been dead on its feet moments before now had metal arms extended, catching wenhan in the palm of its hand. Wenhan stares up at the glassy visor, unable to see Taeil’s form tucked inside its shell. 

He hadn't been the only one lying from the beginning.

jyu-oh-sei has a special place in my heart, beloved so bad it's good anime. i haven't watched it since i was like 12 but to this day my entire family quotes "you spilled our waaater our precious waaater" on a regular basis. it's so bad but it's also genuinely interesting, i wanted to watch the whole show because i was really engaged in the mystery! the ost contains tracks with brilliant titles like "mother of hug" and "eat a sneaker." i was shocked when i learned it was based off a manga because the plot was so disjointed i assumed they had to be writing it as they went along.

I got weirdly defensive about my editing abilities in 2019 so decided to make something specifically to show that I could, in fact, make a really good edit. /shrug

Started: october 2019 during AWA PRO 2019 Finished: 12 August 2020 Spent countless hours on it during that time. Started keeping actual track of hours in Jan 2020. So total project time below is heavily UNDERstated.

Time spent: 94hr 3min 10s total. (again- understated. I normally just round up to 100 lol) 72hrs 38min 10sec for Premiere CS6. 18hr 42min for after effects CS6. 2hr 43min VLC (looping betas lmao).

Finalist in AWA PRO 2020: Best artistic, best video. No Awards won.

Many thanks to all my beta testers, for the editors on discord who actually tried to explain what flow was in esoteric ways so I could maybe understand it, and their help with footage procurement (searching for certain scene compositions in anime I didn’t know). Special shoutouts to TheLazyDaze for continuous hype and feedback, SeasonsAMV who showed me The Perfect Insider, which finished a big blank spot I was struggling with, and Niotex and Dr. Derpface who convinced me to just make my own butterflies in After Effects (Previously I had tried to mask them out of a Demon Slayer scene. It was awful).

Breakdown of the baby scene: (released 26 dec 2020)

My PC nearly died while I tried to make this, and it didn’t even render correctly in the end. I’m sorry for the glitchiness, but due to the difficulty this is likely the only thing like this I will do for Esoterra. [The gold mandala & meat pieces scenes show up later than they should, making accurate comparison pretty difficult. The other overlays seem mostly in sync. I apologize.] This is all the overlays involved for just the one part of the baby scene. The baby scene is not even the most complicated scene in the full AMV, but it is the one that is most obviously different and the one that seems to get most the positive remarks. Hope this is interesting to someone.

Breakdown of the whole thing: (released 6 Jan 2021)

Finally a breakdown that I’m semi-okay with. It’s not as detailed as I wanted, but I think it gets enough of the message across. It’s still a bit buggy in some areas (2 different video files stitched together to get all the video tracks on screen) but it’s in sync. This timeline is actually pretty organized. Any video that’s on it is actively being used in conjunction with an opacity/layer blending mode, masks, or keying. (But 80% of the time it’s a blending mode). Any nested sequences that seem to have the same clips repeated continually are due to the same reasons. On this timeline, Green is nested, Pink is an AE project. I didn’t do pop-ups for every nested sequence or AE project because most of them weren’t anything complicated. The others were either complicated or I just wanted to show off for whatever reason. Especially the butterfly segment. I hand-made and animated the butterfly swarm. All frames are shown on the tracks for informational purposes; I don’t edit like that. Anyway, this was submitted and made finals in AWA PRO 2020, but didn’t win anything (My other video, “Dysphoria,” did win best tech in the same contest though). Esoterra was the most complicated and tech-heavy video I’ve made. Also clocking in at the longest time I’ve ever spent on a project, nearly 100 hours. Feel free to ask any questions!

i think it must be important for writers to read an absolutely shit book every once in a while, that series of blog posts roasting game of thrones gave me a spark of worldbuilding joy long dormant
