A cloud of pearly white came out of Y/n’s mouth as she blew hot air onto her slightly blue hands.

“Give them here you idiot.” Haknyeon tutted at her and rubbed her hands between his gloved ones, trying to return them to a more favourable temperature. “You should buy some gloves, dumbass.”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. I’ll get some later.” She turned her head repeatedly, stretching to look over Haknyeon’s shoulder. Her eyebrows were knitted together like a Christmas jumper and she bit her lip in confusion. “Ugh, where are they? It’ll be packed if they don’t hurry up and get here.”

“Relax, I can see Younghoon’s head above the crowd.” He said, waving in the direction behind Y/n.

After at least three head counts, the 12 entered the market and started a discussion of where to explore first. The agreement was to split up into various groups until everyone got distracted at the fairy lights turning on and Chanhee enforced a ‘family photoshoot’ because it was ‘too aesthetic to not go on my feed’.

Kevin, Jacob, Sangyeon, and Haknyeon then wandered off to try some festive drinks to warm them up. Eric, Sunwoo, and Hyunjae ran straight to the ferris wheel. Chanhee, Changmin, and Younghoon were desperate to go to the photo booth with some Christmassy glasses. And Juyeon and Y/n went on a stroll around the gift stalls in thought of Christmas presents for family members.

“Kevinnnnnn you know you love meeeeee” Haknyeon whined, pulling on Kevin’s arm. “Buy me some cakeeeee?”

“To quote Hamlet Act III Scene iii line 87, ‘no’.” He replied, purposely biting into his own cake and ranting to Haknyeon about how good it tasted to wind him up.

Unfortunately, this didn’t quite go to plan since Haknyeon bit into and stole Kevin’s cake from between his lips, as soon as he turned to face him. Kev stood with his mouth wide open in shock while the other three clutched their stomachs in laughter, howling at the whole ordeal. Sangyeon even got the end recorded on his phone.

“You bitch!” Kevin half-shouted in a very high voice. “Go buy your own food.”

“But it always tastes better when it’s free.”

“You can’t argue with that logic, I’m sorry Kev.” Jacob patted him on the shoulder, giggling and shaking his head in pretend-sadness.

“I’m suing!” Kevin said, pointing his finger at Haknyeon with squinting eyes. He made a dramatic turn to the next food-stall and power-walked over to it.

Sangyeon shook his head in disbelief, laughing to himself. This was going to be a fun evening.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the market, a member of staff was having a rather hard time containing their laughter due to the sight of three tall men failing to squeeze into a photo booth. They were sporting fluorescent pink feather boas wrapped around their necks and glasses three times the size of their faces. Changmin also appeared to have had a fight with glitter as he had one side of his face was smeared with orange sparkles.

Younghoon had gone into the booth first, exclaiming that he was too tall to go in last and Changmin had tried sitting on Younghoon’s lap but had received multiple complaints about him being too heavy for his ‘beautifully slender legs’.

“Slender my ass, they’re lankier than New’s!”

“Just get in, I’m freezing!” Chanhee started kicking Changmin’s butt in hopes of gaining some warmth inside the box but was greeted by a biting Q instead.

By this point, the member of staff had gone slightly red with silent laughter and was holding their nose to conceal any sound that may escape. Maybe they should have helped but watching the ordeal was far more entertaining.

A long line had started to form behind Hyunjae, Sunwoo, and Eric for the ferris wheel. They were sure to be in the next go, right?

Sunwoo watched the pod at the top with glistening eyes. “One day, when I find someone I really like, I’m going to take them on a ferris wheel and kiss them at the top.” He whispered, smiling to himself.

“Oooooo Hyunjaeeee, did you hear the sappy romantic? It’s a great idea. Want to gimme a kiss at the top?” Eric leaned his head on Hyunjae’s shoulder and started making kissing noises next to his ear.

“In your dreams, Sohn Youngjae.” He gave Eric a shove, chuckling. “Clearly Sunwoo is the one who wants the kiss.”

“Awwww, you should have said Sunwoo! Come ‘ere.” Sunwoo immediately swerved out of Eric’s kiss path and lost balance, hitting a child’s ice cream on the way down to the floor. He was met with immediate bellowing and crying and started profusely apologising to the boy’s mother. Hyunjae and Eric were no help of course, doubled over with laughter and snorting.

Sunwoo’s face had gone bright red. Oh, how he wished the ground would swallow him up.

“Blue or purple?” Juyeon held up two sets of baubles to Y/n in question.

“Isn’t your Mum a fan of purple? I remember you saying something about her favourite scarf being lilac.”

“Aww, you remembered.” Juyeon made a face some might refer to as ‘puppy dog eyes’. “That’s a good point though, she’d love to match her outfit with the tree.”

“You told me that this morning, Juyeon.” She giggled at him, her laughter intensifying when he accidentally dropped one of the packs onto his toe and started hopping around in a circle clutching his foot.

The owner of the stall cooed at them. “Oh to be young and in love.”

“Oh, we’re not in—“

“We’re not togeth—“

The two glanced at each other, embarrassed. Their faces turning a deep shade of red. The seller continued cooing at them and whispered ‘not yet, anyway’ to himself, too quietly for the pair to pick up on what he said.

“Actually, that reminds me of something I need to talk to you about, Juyeon.” Y/n mentioned, passing the money to the craftsman in exchange for their purchases.

Juyeon’s tired brain went into overload at that statement. ‘Oh my god! She need to talk to me about something? Related to being in love? With me? Is she going to confess her undying love for me?’

“I’ve been getting these messages from some crazy ex of yours telling me to stay away from you? I thought I should mention it to you since you’d have the best opinion on the situation.”

‘Oh, that’s not a love confession. Wait, did she say crazy ex of mine?’

“Can I have a look?” He queried, worriedly. “My last girlfriend was unhealthily obsessed with me and wouldn’t let other girls even talk to me. I broke up with her because she was being too controlling and the relationship was making me really upset and pretty angry. She hasn’t said anything mean to you, has she?”

Y/n listened intently to Juyeon, while fishing her phone out of her bag. She handed it to him without responding and guessed by the look on his face that this was definitely the girl he was referring to.

“Tell me if she messages you again, yeah? I don’t want you to have to deal with her bullshit alone.” He gave Y/n her phone back and gave her a hug, brushing her hair with his hand and reassuring her that it would get sorted out.

“Now let’s go enjoy our night?” They smiled at each other and wandered off to buy more trinkets for Christmas presents.

The morning air was crisp and chilly; the breeze raising goosebumps on Sunwoo’s skin. Jogging to get away from the cold, he reached the door of the bakery and swung it open. “Morning y/n!” he shouted, closing the door behind him to keep the warm air inside. “Y/n? Where are you?” He moved further into the shop and peered over the counter. No y/n. Just some… wait is that flour on the floor?

Suddenly, a rather small figure danced her way out of the back door into the room, with a broom in her hands. Her earphones were on the verge of falling out of her ears due to her energetic (and awful) movements. Sunwoo stared in bewilderment at his coworker, who still hadn’t noticed his presence. Y/n was too immersed in SHINee’s ‘View’ to be paying attention to her surroundings.

This happened to be the cause of the next accident of the morning. Not noticing the empty bag of flour on the floor, she slipped and fell backwards, dropping the broom in the process. Y/n looked up and saw Sunwoo snorting and crying with laughter from the comedic scene in front of him.

Of course you had to see that” she huffed, standing up and dusting herself off. Y/n threw the broom at him told him to clean up the mess while she hid in the back room for a few minutes due to embarrassment. Y/n returned around 5 minutes later looking slightly less red in the face but still wearing a grumpy expression.

They got to business, cleaning the floor and surfaces and getting the displays and machines ready for the day’s work. The tables were all set, each with pink laminated menus and white serviettes. The two worked very swiftly in setting up, except when they played rock-paper-scissors to decide who cleaned the bathroom and who baked the morning batch of pastries. Let’s just say y/n cheered up after that game.

After an hour of setting up, Sunwoo switched the sign at the door to ‘open’ and returned to the counter to prepare for the first round of customers.

The pair worked well together. Over the next 40 minutes they greeted customers, baked, caught up with their regulars, baked some more, made a few coffees for frantic college students who woke up late, baked even more, and almost broke a china saucer.

Eventually, the morning rush slowed and y/n and Sunwoo were back to playing rock-paper-scissors and chopsticks to pass time. It was then that Sunwoo had his first (not so) brilliant idea.

“So y/n, we’ve not got any people to serve. We’ve both got hours until our first break. We’re both bored. I think it’s time you teach me how to use the coffee machine”. He explained, with a smug smile. Unfortunately, y/n’s face did not match his. Instead she wore a sort of disgusted face of horror which screamed ‘help me’ and ‘oh fuck’.

“Haha good joke Sunwoo!” She replied, avoiding eye contact like she was getting paid all of Jeff Bezos’ money to.

“Awe, come onnnn. I’ve been wanting to learn foreverrrrr. I’ll even do the dishes in my break!” He gave her a very persuasive puppy-eyes face and laid his head on her shoulder. “You know you love me. You’ll have to do it at some point.” Oh fuck, he had a point there. Might as well get it over and done with.

“Fine, I’ll teach you. But if this ends up like when you broke 12 mugs and the kettle in one week then you’re forever banned from using it”.

“DEAL!” he flicked her forehead and ran over to the coffee machine with a clean cup. She crossed her fingers in hope that nothing would break.

By 12pm, Sunwoo had mastered the coffee machine, with the sacrifice of another mug and y/n’s patience. The bakery was almost full but there was no current queue and so y/n sat back down to try one of Sunwoo’s coffees. Admittedly, it was pretty good but she wasn’t going to tell him that.

To thank his coworker, Sunwoo introduced her to his second (not so) brilliant idea of the day. “I see you’ve drunk all of my amazing, show-stopping, never been done before coffees.” He tried winking at her but it turned into more of what y/n would call a wonk. “Since you’ve been so kind to let me use the coffee machine to make myself unlimited coffees-“

“Wait, that’s not what it’s fo-“

“ANYWAYS. To repay you I’m doing you the honour of inviting you to come watch my football game this weekend. No need to thank me.” He gave her another ‘wonk’ and smiled cheekily.

“Sunwoo, that’s not a payback, you’ve still got to do the dishes. I would like to come though. To see the hot players, not for you” She placed down her cup and stood up awaiting the customers who were entering the bakery.

“Well that was just rude. And stupid. ‘Cause I’m the hottest player.” He stuck his tongue out and turned around to make another coffee.

Y/n rolled her eyes. She was working with a child.
