Medication.

When I was 10 years old, I was sent to my first juvenile facility. I arrived after lights out and was sent straight to bed. The next morning, I was woken up and told to stand in the line for medication. Confused, I stood at the end of the line and when it was my turn, I was handed a little paper cup with a cocktail of pills inside of it and another paper cup with water. When I asked what they were for, I was told that I had been diagnosed by the Psychiatrist with bipolar.  A man that had never spoken to me diagnosed me, a 10 year old child, less than 8 hours after I had arrived (nearly all of which was spent asleep) with bipolar disorder.  I swallowed the pills. I had no choice. For the next 5 and a half years I would be put on more and more medication. Not once did I actually see or speak to a doctor, much less an actual Psychiatrist.

Kalief Browder was just 16 years old when he was charged with stealing a backpack. He was never convicted of a crime, yet he was locked up with adults for three years on New York’s most notorious jail complex, Rikers Island. All because his family couldn’t make bail. When he was released, he killed himself. Now, his brother Akeem Browder is fighting to protect children in the criminal justice system today. Solitary.

I was put into solitary confinement for the first time when I was 10 and the last time when I was 15. Sometimes I feel like I’m still there.

Abuse.

When I wasn’t in solitary, there were brief moments where I wasn’t being physically abused. It never lasted long enough but I think that those fleeting moments when I wasn’t alone helped keep my sanity relatively intact.

Trans-feminine youth have gone to lockdown instead of cutting their hair and used their bed sheets to design curtains for their cells once they got there. They have smuggled in Kool-Aid to dye their hair, secretly shaved their legs, colored their fingernails with markers, and used crayons for eye shadow. When a lawyer asked her trans-masculine client to dress more 'feminine' for court, knowing that the judge was increasingly hostile toward gender non-conforming youth, her client drew the line at the skirt, fearlessly and proudly demanding that she receive her sentence in baggy pants instead.

Hopelessness.

We know the effects of solitary confinement on adult minds and yet developing minds are forced to endure it every day in the US. The effects are severe and lifelong.
