Even the Birds Were a Little Chilly this Last Week
Cold Morning Like much of the rest of the United States, the last week has been much colder here than usual. We even had snow in the Florida panhandle and into northern central Florida. That’s not a once in a lifetime occurrence, but it sure isn’t the normal for us. And not only have we people been chilled by this unusual weather, but so has the wildlife. On my way into my office last week I saw…

So Here's a different birding question!
Is this juvenile Red-tailed Hawk the same bird as this one I saw a few times in the fall? It's the same cemetery.
The head looks lighter and the belly band higher, but I'm not finding much on how much patterns change between juvenile and juvenile plumage as opposed to juvenile to adult. Plus, the more recent photo is backlit and at a very different angle.

They both have the same oh shit what are YOU doing here look, but that could be a hawk thing, or possibly what all the birds on my usual walk think when I go by!

weirdo bird at my school (presumably a really old and raggedy red shouldered hawk)
(Austin, TX, USA)
To me this looks like a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), family Accipitridae, order Accipitriformes, but its hard to tell for sure from this lighting.

This juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk was diving at ducks on the river, swooping back and forth on gusty fall breezes. He hasn’t yet grown in his iconic red tail feathers and sports a pattern of brown bars instead.

I thought this was a straggler red tailed hawk when it was flying by but upon editing my photos I realized it was a juvenile bald eagle. Very cool to see as I was in the city and not expecting any birds!

hello friend I currently have several hawks and crows engaging in a turf war outside my bedroom window, one hawk that was perched outside my window has been identified by my beloved girlfriend as a coopers hawk, but we also have a lot of red tails around her and I was wondering if you have any tips for identifying coopers hawks from below, specifically in comparison to red tails, so that I can identify them when I see them flying around getting chased by crows
Hell yeah I do! (Quickly before we start, RTHA = Red tailed hawk and COHA = cooper's hawk) (Also this is assuming they are COHA. SSHA will share almost all of these traits with COHA, but you asked for comparison to RTHA so I'm not gonna get into all that)
Most reliable ID characteristic for differentiating them for a beginner is gonna be the tail bars COHA have thickly barred tails and RTHA do not. Most morphs of adult RTHA will have the iconic red tail, but even juveniles and morphs that don't will never have bars as thick as a COHA. For example: Adult RTHA vs Adult COHA

Most of the other criteria requires a bit of experience to use reliably, stuff like shape, proportions, size, etc, but here's a picture of them flying next to eachother to give you a general sense of the size and shape difference
