“Mint!” They called loud, their voices echoing in the forest.

The blizzard had stopped, some extra inches of snow covered the ground, making it difficult to walk.

Papyrus couldn’t help the pang of angst in his chest every time Sans sniffled behind him.

He knew the shorter was still crying, feeling guilty for what happened. Papyrus had tried to comfort him, but it was difficult to calm him down when himself was a mess of his own worries. “Mint!” Sans called again.

Papyrus teleported to a tree branch, trying to figure anything unusual in the clean coat of snow. The green hoodie, the fur line, a small lump, anything....

A black spot moved towards them.

“Sans, i see something”

“What is it Pappy?” The younger asked walking under the tree. “Is it him?”

“I can’t tell” He answered. “It’s coming here”

Sans started running in the direction Papyrus was looking.

“Mint?!” Sans asked.

The other squinted, trying to recognize the shape trotting almost calmly. It looked like...

“Sans no! It’s a wolf!”

The shorter stopped a few meters in front of the other monster, staring incredulously at him.

Papyrus appeared between them in a blink, protecting Sans. But the wolf didn’t seem to intend any harm.

Papyrus blinked a couple seconds before he realized who he was looking at, because shit, eight years were a long time, but he would recognize that scar anywhere.

“Re--”

Red barked at him, and turned around, looking at the brothers above his shoulder.

Sans and Papyrus stared at each other as Red walked away.

The shorter gasped. “I think he knows where Mint is, Pappy!”

“What?”

“Let’s follow him!” He said running behind Red.

“Wait! Sans!” Papyrus yelled following them.

A few minutes later, they reached a large cave. Red walked inside, disappearing in the darkness.

Papyrus held Sans in his place. “I’ll go first”

He barely stepped in when a soft echo of steps approached quickly.

“Dad!”

Mint jumped into his father’s chest, hugging him tightly.

“Oh stars Mint, what are you doing here?” Papyrus asked returning the embrace just as firmly.

“I’m sorry! But i waited for you, and you didn’t come, and then it was too cold and…!” He babbled as tears welled up in his eye sockets.

“Shhh” He murmured, caressing his skull. “I’m sorry too, i couldn’t find you in time”

“Mint!” Sans yelped joining in the hug, grabbing both the small skeleton and Papyrus in an breathtaking squeeze. “I-i’m so sorry! It’s all my fault!” He sobbed. “I should’ve never suggested to play in the forest!”

Mint only sobbed, too shocked to speak.

They stayed like that for a long minute until the small one calmed down. Papyrus broke the hug slowly, remembering there was supposed to be another monster with them.

But he stared around to find no one else.

“He left?” Mint asked.

Papyrus nodded in silence, spacing out.

The short skeleton stepped up and ran outside. He looked into the fresh snow, unable to find anything but white around them.

“Are you okay buddy?” His father asked, placing his hand in his small skull.

“...i didn’t get to say thank you” He murmured, his voice hoarse.

Papyrus sighed. “Me neither”

They looked at each other intently, in silence. And finally smiled to each other.

“I think you will have the chance” Sans replied.

“Really?” Mint asked excited, walking to face him.

“Of course!”

“How do you know?” He questioned curious, wagging his tail.

“Because i can tell the future, little one~” Sans winked at Papyrus with a small chuckle.

Sorry if it’s not what you were expecting but i feel Papyrus and Red need more time to fix up their relationship and the proper introduction for Mint should be slower. 

I’m too burnt out to keep writing anymore of this, so i’ll leave it like this and call it an ending.
