Found this photo in a folder titled "Photos that make me happy." We both remember this moment in Central Park a couple of years ago. A group of street dancers were setting up their spot and playing 80's music very loudly. It was a little annoying until this diminutive lady stood up and started clapping along with the biggest smile on her face. The sun had come out, the music was playing, and this blast of positive energy beamed right through the middle of it all. Happiness. Yup… this photo definitely makes us happy and takes us back to that day in the park every time we look at it. floorboards

This is the thing under the floorboards.

The thing of which we do not speak, it is

the Grimm, the name, the talisman known

to call forth ghosts.

The day I showed it to you, so sparkling,

you called it wrong, dangerous,

called it 

omen, called it

lie, called me

deceived.

Every so often I would pull it out from the drawer - not so hidden in those days -

cradle it in my palms and hold it out to you.

See, how it catches the light, how it brightens my eyes;

they are a deeper blue these days,

how you have never seen me glow quite this way?

You called it sorcery,

mirroring,

poked it when it was dim enough to appear ordinary,

aware of a queer glimmer always.

After a time, I put it away.

Pretended it wasn’t the trick up my sleeve.

Let it become only

mine - an intimate shame; not to worry,

you will see it ever so rarely.

But it conjured the ghosts into each conversation, chilling ever so gently.

Some magic is too unruly for taming.

I learned at least half of living from you.

I have your eyes in a different hue,

your ears,

I speak the words you placed carefully on my tongue each year.

They sound like Grace.

I know how earnestly they bloom when you face me

and I know when you speak them to me they are full of belief.

And I know when your eyes are haunted

      with my touch low on her back,

                on their chest, I know

the shape of the words “failure” and “unnatural” and

and “problematic”

on sealed lips.

I’ve always loved that neither of us can whistle,

funny, how people assume the choice of things simply not in your DNA,

but there are some shapes your tongue makes so easily that mine cannot trace.

You say “open-minded” like loving is a price I pay,

You say “some things I just can’t take”

like “let’s just keep pretending another day.”

“Remember how nice it is to feel normal?

“Let’s just let everything be normal,

“Come on, Sarahberry, let’s just put that thing away... it’s dangerous...”

“I’m sure you just don’t see, yet.  Wait

a few years... wait

until you are like me.”
