-y’know, i always forget how truly beautiful that chorus is
-everyone loves chairs
-LOMBARDI ARIA SPOTTED
-this guy’s voice????????? also he’s a snack (his name is justin hopkins)
-playing fast and loose with the text/translation but that must be expected with a pastiche
-YEET the chair
-okay i dig the dancing
-i wanna see a lombardi with this guy as pagano/the hermit
-okay warning for light effects
-this girl quoting mlk in her press conference speech 👍
-this is a great speech
-LUISA MILLER EXCERPT SPOTTED
-look even if it’s a pastiche we need to keep up standards, like the leading soprano getting an entrance aria /j
-i can’t decide whether or not i like her wig
-leading tenor has arrived on the scene!
-the struggle is real (trying to fit all the letters in one row on the board when you made the first few too big)
-this is honestly one of my favorite verdi love duets i’m happy it made it in
-good big brother
-you’re in a liberation movement but you’re trying to coerce a gal into marrying you *math isn’t mathing*
-the singers playing carlo and giuseppe respectively played raoul and nevers in the la monnaie huguenots a couple years ago and i keep thinking about that
-they’re practicing the lombardi act 3 trio prelude
-also the wanderer over a sea of fog painting
-tfw you’re crushing on your collaborative piano project partner but she has no interest in you
-oooooooooh
-“breaking the rules is far more exciting”
-“did you fuck carlo”
-the DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAMA
-YESSSSSSSSSS LAURA TELL HIM OFF
-boat
-enea scala ended up shirtless at la monnaie AGAIN lol
-also i actually can’t remember which opera this is from (i want to say attila but i don’t think so?)
-definitely no homoeroticism in this scene (lying)
-ah yes, the obligatory drinking chorus (and the guys frantically getting dressed again)
-i can’t identify this chorus either but either way it bops
-nabucco overture comes back
-thank you for teaching me how to conjugate “participate” in italian
-we have encountered the riot police!
-nabucco opening scene, i believe
-they’ve got their hands up. will the riot police acknowledge this? (no. they will not)
-the dancing is so cool
-yeah. fuckin called it (they did not acknowledge it. they used tear gas and bullets)
-DUE FOSCARI TIME
-omg this girl is amazing (her name is gabriela legun)
-THAT HIGH NOTE
-tfw a guy hits on both your sister and your girlfriend
-dads pretty much never have time for their kids in verdi except to give them trauma and emotionally neglect them so this tracks
-MASNADIERI ARIA SPOTTED
-yeet the shoes
-hurray! carlo lives!
-lorenzo NOT THE TIME
-someone is having a rough day and his name is lorenzo
-another luisa miller excerpt spotted!
-okay if you wanna see her happy then maybe just LEAVE HER ALONE??????
-okay i wanna see this guy do like every verdi bass role ever i LOVE his voice
-carlo got kidnapped by the police????????????
-and they’re trying to bribe him with offering to pay for his sick mom’s medical treatment??? (unclear as to whether or not he took it)
-okay i think this is the giovanna d’arco coronation scene but i could be wrong
-nope i was wrong this is the battaglia di legnano opening
-okay i don’t think he took it
-or maybe he did? he seems really conflicted
-yeah you cried but not entirely for the reasons you’re saying (you were MAD at him earlier)
-cristina’s just awkwardly watching her boyfriends interact lol
-don’t yeet cristina that’s mean
-they’re slaying this
-the dancers continue to rock
-okay this *is* giovanna d’arco
-laura: friendship ended with nonviolent resistance now violent resistance is my best friend
-what are these bobbleheads
-okay this is a cool stage picture
-ma’am are you giving her a DYNAMITE BELT?????
-laura: *wakes up and sees a belt of dynamite tied to her*
laura: well weirder things have happened
totally normal response
-if there’s one thing la monnaie likes doing, it’s having enea scala take off his shirt
-this pastiche is really leaning on how many verdi characters are named carlo
-and that’s intermission! more to come later
alright nerds
rivoluzione/nostalgia time!!!
(aka la monnaie de munt’s current verdi pastiche, available for free on operavision)

Alright charmers, farmers, and idiots. It's a brisk 60 degrees in Los Angeles so don't forget your booties, because it's coooooooold out there. And I'm back with another edition of...
The Worst Movie on Netflix Right Now™
This week's feature was by request of @anasandorpygoscelis. I think. I mean, I'm pretty sure there was a post somewhere. Anyhow, on this marvelous Monday, we're doing...
Tumblr media
The Noel Diary. This is a movie starring Justin Hartley (This is Us) and Barrett Doss (Grey's Anatomy) and it's directed by Charles Shyer who is best known for writing and directing some rom-com classics from the late 80s and early 90s like Baby Boom and Father of the Bride.
The film is based on a book by Richard Paul Evans who apparently has a whole series of "Noel" books, so he's really the smartest person involved in this whole production because my bet is this dude is CASHING in on the whole Christmas concept (to the extent that any writer anywhere can cash in on anything, but you know what I mean).
THE PLOT
Alright, so this movie is about a best-selling novelist, Jacob Turner, who returns to his childhood home to handle the affairs of his recently deceased estranged mother when he meets Rachel, who has come to his mom's house in search of her birth mother. ...don't worry, it's revealed early on that her mom was the nanny, so there's no weird Folger's bro/sis thing happening here. But that's the plot.
Tumblr media
Anyhow, my favorite part of this fucking movie was how the filmmaker actually used visual storytelling to communicate characters. Like for once we actually get some thoughtful set design - as in woooooooow this is actually trying to show me something other than generic-American-handsome man!
But like, siiiiiiiiiiiigh, nice effort, but did you have to make this dude out like some sort of Esquire magazine wet dream? As the camera pans-and-fades around his Moody Bachelors Anonymous pad, it lingers just long enough to let your eye catch a few key things: books by Bob Dylan and David Sedaris, a bulletin board with handwritten notes and black-and-white travel photos (the Eiffel tower obvs), multiple antique typewriters (an Underwood), an Edgar Allen Poe funko, a record player, and a stack of LPs with the only record showing being Nina Simone. Like... daaaaaaamn. This is the guy I wanted to date when I was twenty and was still trying to be a writer.
And of course his house is this beautifully furnished mid-century, eames-chair-sporting, ready for its Vogue walk-through drool-property. Can I just stop at this point in the movie? Job done. You've sold me. He's hot, rich, and lives in a gorgeous house with real actual art and a cute dog (that's just big enough to not be a small dog but not so big it's cliche). Like... FUCK. OH and then he tunes an actual transistor radio to... you guessed it... the local jazz station. Dating this guy is like dating an OC moodboard on tumblr.com.
This whole scene is only bested by the next set-decorating moment where he returns to his childhood bedroom: Drugstore Cowboy poster (unframed), basketball and football trophy (both???), Larry Bird signed jersey (framed), French New Wave poster (framed????), stack of miscellaneous board games with TRIVIAL PURSUIT GENUS I on top, another antique typewriter, bedside reading featuring On the Road by Jack Kerouac and A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway (like, of course), and another bulletin board with various concert ticket stubs.
Fuck, I need a cigarette.
Tumblr media
Honestly, that's it, that's all I want to talk about. An hour and 40 minute movie and I'm done with it 12 minutes in. He's THE MOST INTERESTING MAN IN THE WORLD. This dude is too perfect. No amount of trauma makes this guy suddenly undateable. He's an unbelievable character not because we didn't get enough detail, but because the detail is just too perfect. Jesus, he's walking out of a Restoration Hardware catalogue dragging a brass telescope behind him and asking if you want to look at the stars (I do).
Anyhow, here's the thing about this movie - it's actually pretty well done, but FUCK it's really fucking sad. Unlike most Christmas movies that look like they spent too much time at fucking Hobby Lobby, this movie sort of side-swipes Christmas. Like all this shit is happening, and oh yeah, it's Christmas time. This is good because it avoids the cliches, but it's bad because ISN'T THIS SUPPOSED TO BE A CHRISTMAS MOVIE!?!? WHERE IS SANTA!? You can't have an entire Christmas romance movie and the only comic relief is on the dog. That's too much pressure for a pup!
Anyhow, one of my common gripes about these movies is that by the end of the movie you want to think the couple belongs together. The way this movie tries to sell you on it is essentially two key details: Rachel (the love interest) has a tattoo of Billie Holliday on the inside of her forearm and once Jacob starts playing a jazz classic on the piano (OH YEAH HE PLAYS PIANO TOO) and Rachel immediately starts singing, beautifully, along. Seeeeeeeee? They're fucking perfect for each other.
Rachel is also an interesting character in a too-perfect sort of way (she's a language major who speaks fluent Italian on screen HOTTTTTTTT!). It's still a moodboard it's just got black and white photos of Italy on it instead of France. I bet her childhood bedroom has a framed poster that says ITALIAN NEW WAVE. Annnnnyhow... are they perfect for each other?
Nah, they're still not. This entire movie is a lot of sorting through some fucked up childhood trauma and I think that would bond most people. But do they belong together? Naaaaaaah.
Rachel shows some insane amount of patience for the men in her life in this movie and I don't really want to get into the plot too deeply (even though it's a little fucked) cause it's too fucking sad. Jacob apparently suddenly decides he no longer wants to be a permanent bachelor and he's all in for Rachel and we don't know really why. But like... sure, I GUESS.
If your jam is sad Christmas vibes, then this is the movie for you. These two live sadly ever after.
Last note: Bonnie Bedelia is in this movie and she is as radiant as ever.
Tumblr media
Where is her movie? Bonnie Bedelia is the nosy neighbor artist next door and I have never felt so in need of a bi rom-com starring her. LET'S GO, NETFLIX. FUCK THIS SAD SHIT. GIVE ME HOT BONNIE.
Alright, that's all I got.

i don’t usually do this but i feel Compelled to do a liveblog/review of Mouth Dreams so here goes
Please don’t read this if you haven’t heard the album yet as it’ll spoil Everything
(i’ll admit the idea came to me After i listened to Just a Baby so these first ones are gonna be relistened reviews)
first we got Yahoo. what can i say about this song? neil starts off Strong with incredibly sustained notes and just one phrase, in typical neil style. and he makes it work in so many different ways! honestly didn’t expect myself to get so attached so fast but that’s just the way his magic works ig. when the hoooooooos harmonise it almost brings tears to the eyes. i would love to see a group of choristers singing this with another guy on an electric keyboard. what a cold open. 9/10
of course then we go on to the titular track, the dimension of sound, the dimension of imagination, the dimension of doors. rod serling narrates the intro in his traditional monotone as the warbling twilight zone theme plays in the background. i tell ya i was actually Screaming when the track finished and he dropped the title! it may not be a song per se, sort of like Blockbuster from Mouth Moods, a ‘filler track’ if you will, but the effort in those fifty seconds cannot be ignored. it just goes to show once again how Good he is at what he does. 6.5/10
oh lawd, my favourite so far, Spongerock. reading the title i had absolutely No idea what to expect. the goofy goober song from the movie? winner takes all from band geeks? i was pleasantly surprised to find myself tapping out queen’s distinctive boom boom CLAP as the song progressed, and i was in complete Hysterics the whole way through, chanting along with the kids as the pirate encouraged me to sing louder. it’s such a beautiful fit the way they mesh together, and it’s one of those mashups that you listen to and think ‘why has nobody done this before?’ but neil is on a higher plane of existence than us and Knows where it’s at. you’re never the same after you’ve listened to Spongerock. 7.5/10
Just a Baby, where i stopped to begin this thing, is a melancholy song, which i’m not usually a fan of. i admit i don’t know the original song so i kept quiet until the last chorus or two. it’s the yang to the yin of Wow Wow from Moods, another sentence-mixer that was like a full Bop and barely gave you time to catch your breath. in Just a Baby you begin to empathise with the singer as he regales confusing times of his constant youth, including the time his mother (a train) shot a man in cold blood. it’s a powerful ballad, and it’s got a tasteful amount of justin bieber adding backing vocals to the chorus. i may have to deduct a few points cos the lyrics are gonna be hard af to remember. 7/10
ok next up we got Superkiller. this one’s totally blind! i’m. ehhhhh okay not diggin this one very much. ok that say something once line being repeated was comedy gold but talking heads are just like. kinda tuneless tbh. i’m glad he’s trying to lassoo it together with u can’t touch this but it’s kinda falling short tbh. i wouldn’t skip it but it’s not as memorable as the previous ones. 5/10
starting Get Happy. i’m not gonna lie i think i Know what this is, there are only so many options after all. i predict it’s a mix of “get dancin’” by disco-tex and the sex-o-lettes and “happy” by bahrrel williams, and i really hope that ain’t the case cos i Love the first one but despise the latter. oh well let’s see if he can pull it off. sounds like village green by the kinks so far lol uhhhh i have no idea what to make of this. okay i feel like i’m gonna like this after all. hey it’s got memorable lyrics at least! is it gonna get faster? or just more bassy? yknow maybe i was too critical at the start, but i had no idea what to expect. this is a feel-good pop song and it’s definitely making me feel happier than i was when i was listening to Superkiller. 7/10
Ribs? wtf do i expect from a song called Ribs lmao another song i’ve never heard of IH IT’S EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE TH WORLD OH YEEEEEEEEES omg i Love this song i sing it to myself when i’m walkin my dog cos his little paws click-clack on the pavement to the exact rhythm of the song omg i’m in Love! another one with odd lyrics but i think after a Lot of repeat listening i’ll be able to properly croon along to this one omg! it reminds me of Best from Mouth Silence in that they’re both about products, only instead of folgers in your cup it’s about chili’s baby back ribs omg neil you’re Perfect! how come more advertisers haven’t contacted you for a product placement deal?? 7.5/10
next we got My Mouth. welcome to? who knows let’s hit play. ooooh minor key. is this a real song? it sounds like oney singing a cover of something. oh That’s the gimmick? 2:30 long i hope there’s something else tbh cos otherwise it’s gonna get pretty thin pretty fast. mm not a fan. the weakest so far imo especially after Ribs blew me away. definitely a bad dream. 3.5/10
Aerolong don’t fail me now! okay see This is how you do a mashup. I DON’T MISS YOU BABAY AND I DO WANNA MISS A THING THAT’S GOLD!! this is just a song about saying bye to your ex lmao i love it. wish it was longer though. 6/10
Sleepin’ here we go! ok in the youtube version the first half of this song is just silence so that wasn’t fun. gee this one’s only moderately better than My Mouth i’m feeling very shortchanged. 4/10
what to expect from Aamoorree? hopefully this one’s another jam but...okay i’m likin this one. it’s Fun and isn’t trying too hard! it’s just a drunk dean martin singing about pizza pie on karaoke night, what more could you ask for lol. 6/10
Where Is My Mom? by the p-p-p-pooo-oo-ooo-oooool of course. i don’t recognise the other song but it’s decent. i’ve listened to slowed-down songs before (the sludgefest chipmunks albums lately) and this one’s kinda ok. not a fan of the ending but points for effort ig. 5.5/10
Fredhammer ay? might there be some peter gabriel in there? undoubtedly. yup there it is lol ok now bring in the flintstones? oh ig that’s fred durst? mm not totally feeling it so far but censoring he** was funny lmao HEY THERE’S SEINFELD i’m wheezin that was a good way to end a song, well done neil. 6.5/10
here goes Limp Wicket. i’m on the edge of my seat. and Again i’m disappointed. is this a bunch of ewoks singing some kind of star wars song? or is it jarjar? either way this is Not a good song. it probably wasn’t before he mashed it up but this wasn’t an improvement. bringing in Fredhammer didn’t help this song much at all, in fact i think it brought both songs down actually. last one was a 7/10 but i Have to dock it points now that it’s a two-parter. as for this one? i’m being generous cos the limp bizkit song was good. 1/10
Cannibals runs for 4 minutes. PLEASE don’t let this be a repeat of the last one. i get that miners can’t dig up gold every time but don’t just show up with a bunch of rocks and iron pyrites yknow i’m just gonna start. i don’t want to be angry at this album. i recognise that sound in the bg! from a cyriak vid i think. thx comin in. loooooooong drone. ugh UGH there are Too many lucid dreams on this album. starting to regret liveblogging this cos i Loved the other three mouth albums. this one’s just falling flat again and again. 3/10
here comes The Outsiders. there is NOTHING to say about this. 1.5/10
come on Johnny. okay that got a laugh out of me, not many songs start with a booing crowd like that, is that meta? wouldn’t put it past him tbh. ah i’ll give it a 5/10, for a kinda filler song it wasn’t too bad.
Closerflies, this has gotta be gold. PLEASE. intro’s goin on for a little too long...mm having never heard the original version of closer i gotta admit i thought it’d be faster, like the one used in Rollercloser in Silence. this version seems very sloppy and sluggish, especially the bassline. 3/10
Nightmovin’ i’m not expecting much OH good intro oh YES now here we go. this is a good one, it’s got clear lyrics and a catchy tune, i’m liking this one more and more by the second. cuts off weird but it’s going into the next one. so i’m gonna leave the rating out of this one and see how it is after the next one.
Whitehouse i’m holding my breath. mm it’s Good but not great tbh. criminal that the last one was half as long as this one. think i’m gonna give both of these songs a 5/10 i doubt they’ll be anyone’s favourites. the title is a nice little joke too i respect that.
Wah! what’s neil’s obsession with using wannabe as a source lmao! it’s another decent one but nothing memorable again. 5/10
Pee Wee Inc i’m expecting big things. good intro I’M IN LOVE okay this is Much better than i imagined it’d be. did he use the radio edit of feel good inc? this is a heck of a way to bring it back to the gold stuff and i wouldn’t be surprised if this is what neil’s head sounds like all the time. 7/10
on to 10,000 Spoons. not sure what to expect from the title. okay this is a Nice one i think. throwback to the likes of Just a Baby with the two songs and the sentence mixing and it’s Good. and really 10,000 spoons is So ironic anyway, don’t you think? 7/10
oh another song called Mouth Dreams? an extro? that was Weird lol ok the intro i wasn’t too keen on, def not as much as the intro, but i got to appreciate it as it went on. like Rlly appreciate it i was beginning to reflect on what a journey i’d been through tonight, especially writing it all down. felt very poetic. and then WHAM, out of nowhere, after being gone for 23 songs, all-star came Back and How! gotta give this one a 7.5/10
keep the train rolling Brithoven! i can hear faint bits of instruments in britney’s song in the back of her audio which sound like a mistake but knowing neil.......yah lmao. this song’s kinda like Promenade (Satellite Pictures at an Exhibition) from Mouth Sounds, i liked what i heard. very nice. 6.5/10
the final song. we’re gonna be hit one more time for Ain’t! and i have NO idea what i’m in for! in the hall of the mountain king eh? is this like a way of looping around to the first song of the first album with classical music? ok the snoring’s a nod to Bustin i’m sure lmao funny anyway. i thought i heard a hey now in there but i must be going nuts. wouldn’t call it a grand finale but it is what it is. 5/10
now the question that must be asked - was Mouth Dreams trying to make a point? was there a reasons so many songs were of lower-quality than previous albums? perhaps it’s just a matter of taste, or perhaps it’s as rod said back on track two, that this album is a doorway into another dimension, and the further you progress, the more mind-rattling, brain-melting concepts you come across. the album gets an average of 5.5 which is kinda disappointing. don’t think i’ll be listening to the whole thing again. thanks for reading!

Two Upcoming Courses of Nigromancy
Here’s just a brief update on two webinar courses coming up here in the second half of October 2019, offered once more through those fine chaps at Wolf & Goat. The first is my Foundation Course: A Goetia of the Four Kings, my first course specifically dedicated to exploring the early modern nigromantic conjuration of unclean spirits. This course will explore a critically undervalued component of goetia - the principle Four Kings of the cardinal directions. Goetia has been a significant part of my magical work for many years, and I continue to deepen it with divination, experiment, and historical research. I finally feel ready to share some of this work in this course.
The Four Kings are not merely senior spirits of the cardinal directions, although they certainly do orient the practitioner at the crossroads of conjuration. They provide a vital means of organising the rogues' galleries of the mass of devilish spirits of the European grimoire traditions. Crucially, appealing to the authority of Oriens, Paymon, Amaymon, and Egyn when conjuring less senior spirits lends stability, coherence, and efficacy to such workings. The Four Regents become a vital part of navigating the bureaucracies of Hell as envisioned in the nigromantic practices of pre-moderrn goetia. Yet since their deliberate exclusion from the spirit catalogue of Johannes Weyer - a deliberate endeavour on the part of the demonologist to hamstring the very system he was criticising - they are given considerably less attention in modern occult thought or magical practice.
This course seeks to help practitioners of a variety of experiences and abilities find their way back to these Regents of European grimoiric conjuration, restoring a pivotal layer of demonic hierarchy and returning a potent set of ruling spirits to the circles of karcists, demonologists, and nigromancers today. We will examine the Four's appearances in a variety of grimoires - including the Folger Book of Magic, the Book of Dannel, the Excellent Book, and many other manuscript rites and operations. We will discuss their alternative names and assigned cardinal directionality, as well as meeting a few of their most significant messengers, 'sub-kings', and ministers. We will also further explicate early modern connections between the Four Kings and the Sorcerer Saint Cyprian, patron of grimoires and nigromantic magic. Those who study this course will be provided with indispensable working methodologies for directing and dealing with so-called 'unclean spirits' and in performing works of grimoire magic.
The course - which consists of three two-hour webinar sessions packed with analyses of their heraldry, conjurations, and operations - will also include a free hour-long one-to-one consultation to ensure that students can incorporate these teachings of the Four Kings into their own practice. This Foundation course will also be a pre-requisite for future classes and courses on early modern goetia and nigromancy.
For more information, or to signup, follow this here link right here.
My second webinar series, beginning Tuesday 29th October is a new cycle of my Advanced Geomancy course The Earth Shall Hold Them Close. This is a course teaching the ways by which geomancy may investigate matters related to both ancestral spirits and restless dead. Having run it once before, I have a couple of testimonials I’d love to share which offer a little more detail on what previous students have got out of it.
“In this Advanced Geomancy course, the clever Dr. Cummins shines a lanterns’ glow on the necromantic potential buried below the surface of our dearly beloved earthy oracle. Whether you’re knocking on the doors of the Fourth House, Genitor, to check in on the blessed ones who came before or you are investigating the Eighth House, Mors, because you’ve got a bad case of somebody not going gently into that good night, The Earth Shall Hold Them Close provides you the terrestrial foundations to bridge the gap between this world and the next. By elevation or exorcism, geomancy isn’t just limited to a form of divination, but a potent means of spiritual communication and spellcraft for both mediumship and malefica alike. Dr. Cummins acts as a psychopomp, gently guiding you into the liminal space between spiritual investigation and spirit contact, and providing you with workings, advice, and inspiration for whatever conditions you may inherit from the other side.  Geomancy and tending to my ancestors are two essential pillars of my personal spirituality and magical practice, and The Earth Shall Hold Them Close not only allowed one lamp to cast light on the shadow of the other, it subtly rearranged the way I engage with worlds here and beyond. Al acts as guardian cunning man passing on the albus-white wisdom of the past to help re-enchant and reconnect us to the spiritus mundi of our present. Highly recommended.” - Justin Cassatt
“This course on geomancy and the Dead was instrumental in advancing my studies of the art, acquiring a deeper appreciation, and furthering my understanding of its implications for practice. Al’s expertise in history, humoural theory, ritual, and folk magic lent a great deal to weaving together various threads of esoteric knowledge that are only fairly recently beginning to find their homes once again in each other. The importance of the Dead is something that Al and others have striven before now to restore to their proper place of consideration. This course is a prime example of how one might apply that scholarship in a very accessible and practice way. If I can only say one thing, it is that I consider it a privilege to study with Al and am deeply grateful for what he has taught me and shared in these courses. You would do yourself a solid favor in continuing study with Al. There is deep wisdom, knowledge, and medicine in his offering and I can’t recommend it enough without giving away his invaluable teachings.” - Mr B Fox.
This course comes with a free hour-long one-to-one session of private coaching to integrate it into one’s very personal practice of ancestor veneration and wider spiritwork. You are not required to have significant background experience in working with ancestors, and this can be a great place to start attending to one’s dead more fully. As an Advanced Geomancy class, this typically requires students to have taken my Geomancy Foundation course. But if you haven’t taken that already and really want to get on this, please drop me a line and we’ll see what we can do...
Anyone interested in knowing more about these courses, or hoping to set up a payment plan (which I’m happy to do!), should email me at consultantsorcerer [at] gmail.com for a chat about such things. I would dearly love you all to be able to take these courses and engage with the important information and techniques therein.
Merry Hallowstide, every one of us.

10 new books from Colorado authors that deserve more attention
After years of writing and editing, and months of setting up now-cancelled author tours and promotional events, is it worth the effort to publish a book during a global pandemic?
Many Colorado authors say “yes” — in part because they can’t stop the train from rolling out of the station, and in part because that train carries desperately needed supplies.
“A lot of people are reading right now, and book sales overall are actually up,” said Denver-based journalist and anthropologist Scott Carney, who published his new nonfiction book, “The Wedge,” on his Foxtopus Ink imprint April 13. “But the way you have to get word out now is more reliant on social media and podcasts … things that move faster than most of the (machinery in the) book world.”
For Andrew Altschul, the Fort Collins-based author of the novel “The Gringa” (published March 10 by  Melville House), the timing could not have been avoided.
“Our first idea was to release it in early fall of 2020, but doing that during the height of the 2020 election felt like a suicide mission,” said Altschul, an associate professor and director of creative writing at Colorado State University. “Little did we know when we moved it up that there would be something more overwhelming than election season coming our way.”
Denver author Carney’s 2017 nonfiction book “What Doesn’t Kill Us” sold about 150,000 copies and made the New York Times best-seller list. He has been able to salvage some of his roll-out plans for “The Wedge,” despite canceled appearances on national TV shows and other missed marketing opportunities.
“My book is about human health, anxiety, depression and using environmental stimuli to alleviate that,” he said Tuesday, noting about 4,000 paperback sales of “The Wedge” since its April 13 launch.
Those sales occurred despite an alarming, first-day error on the Amazon page for “The Wedge,” which temporarily listed the book as out-of-print, and other challenges along the way.
“I realize it’s not personal,” he said.
Similarly, Melville House published Altschul’s book the day before the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic (March 11). He returned to Colorado from his disheartening national tour as bookstore appearances fell like dominoes.
Since then, he has been talking about “The Gringa” via literary events on Instagram, Facebook Live, YouTube, Zoom and other places that have rushed to fill the vacuum of traditional, in-store book promotion.
“Every author I know is frantically struggling to keep their books alive,” Altschul said. “In the vast scheme of all the tragedy that’s happening, the fate of one book really doesn’t mean very much. At the same time, we have worked on these books for years and can’t help doing anything we can to save them.”
Here are 10 recently (or about-to-be) published fiction and nonfiction books, including the aforementioned titles, from Colorado authors that are worth reading right now. Visit tatteredcover.com to order copies.
Note: This list includes recommendations from the Tattered Cover buyers, metro area libraries, Colorado authors and Denver Post contributors.
“Westering Women,” by Sandra Dallas (St. Martin’s Press, Jan. 7)
Tumblr media
Award-winning Denver writer Dallas flashes her historical-fiction skills in this sharp, 19th-century tale of female bonding that traces the journey of dozens of women on the Overland Trail. Although “Westering Women” came out a couple of months before coronavirus shut down the nation, Dallas’ “quintessential American voice” (as Vogue once called it) still resonates, perhaps even more loudly in our newly disconnected caves. (Full disclosure: Dallas is a freelance book reviewer for The Denver Post.)
“Billionaire Wilderness,” by Justin Farrell (March 3, Princeton University Press)
Farrell, who splits his time between New Haven, Conn., and Denver, spent five years in Teton County, Wyo., (the richest county in the United States) conducting hundreds of interviews with everyone from Wall Street financiers to the rural poor who toil for them. “Billionaire Wilderness” looks at the “far-reaching consequences of the massive accrual of wealth” and paints “an eye-opening portrait of a changing American West where romanticizing rural poverty and conserving nature can be lucrative,” his publisher wrote.
“The Gringa,” by Andrew Altschul (March 10, Melville House)
Is Leonora Gelb a revolutionary or a criminal? That question hangs over “The Gringa,” a stark and surprising novel that starts in late 1990s Peru amid an upheaval that was eerily predictive of post-9/11 America. While it’s inspired by historical events, “The Gringa” is not a thinly veiled rewrite of them, Altschul said. “I also wanted to demolish the tradition of American expatriate novels, where someone goes abroad to find themselves with no attention paid to the people, tragedies or history of that country.”
“Shtick to Business,” by Peter McGraw (April 1, Lioncrest Publishing)
University of Colorado professor McGraw “foolishly” launched this book on April 1 (his words, not mine), but the date was no coincidence. McGraw is an internationally recognized scholar and researcher of humor whose 2014 book “The Humor Code” (with Denver author and journalist Joel Warner) broke ground in the otherwise impenetrable world of comedy. The subtitle of “Shtick to Business” helpfully describes his latest book’s focus: “What the Masters of Comedy Can Teach You About Breaking Rules, Being Fearless, and Building a Serious Career.”
“Death on Tuckernuck,” by Francine Mathews (April 7, Soho Crime)
Tumblr media
Mathews has been a major Colorado author ever since the 1990s — the same decade she left the CIA, moved here and published her first book. “Death on Tuckernuck,” the sixth entry in the Merry Folger Nantucket Mystery series, has been gathering raves from national outlets such as The Washington Post, which called it “a mystery that’s so suspenseful it’s hard not to skip a chapter to see if certain deeply likable characters are still alive.”
“The Wedge,” by Scott Carney (April 13, Foxtopus Ink)
Tumblr media
Carney traces exciting developments in age-old practices with “The Wedge,” which mercifully ignores self-help tropes in its nonfiction, first-person journey to further test the limits of human endurance. “We still respond to stress with the same old, archaic, biological system, but there’s nowhere for those hormones to go, because there’s no physical output — like when we used to use cortisol or adrenaline to run from a tiger,” he said. ” ‘The Wedge’ gives us techniques that balance that out (and) give us emotional and physical engagement that can modulate our stress hormones. That seems super useful right now.”
“This Boy,” by Lauren Myracle (April 14, Walker Books)
Tumblr media
Fort Collins author Myracle, known for middle-grade and YA series such as the Internet Girls, the Winnie Years and the Wishing Day trilogy, crafts “a piece of portraiture that will make so many feel seen and loved,” according to Susan Van Metre of Walker Books. “This Boy” follows middle-class white kid Paul as he navigates teenage life and friendships, spinning “more than a simple cautionary story … this is a deeply felt, highly empathetic exercise in survival and a celebration of friendship” (Booklist).
“Border Thinking” by Andrew Dyrness and Enrique Sepúlveda III (April 7, University of Minnesota Press)
This academic book by University of Colorado professors Dyrness and Sepúlveda deals with “the important and fascinating experiences of migrant Latinx youth who are connected to both sides of our borders,” said Bethany Strout, director of buying at the Tattered Cover. It’s a notable title in an age when border restrictions have become near-absolute, given that the authors traveled across not only the United States but Spain and El Salvador in their participatory research.
“Dumb Luck and Kindness of Strangers,” by John Gierach (June 2, Simon and Schuster
Originally scheduled to be published April 21, this book has been pushed back to June 2. But you can at least preorder this new collection from a voice dubbed “America’s best fishing writer” by the Houston Chronicle. The prolific, Lyons-based author’s “Dumb Luck” is “the perfect antidote to everything that is wrong with the world,” his publisher gushed. With 20 books and countless other writings under Gierach’s belt, we’re inclined to agree.
“Mesa Verde Victim,” by Scott Graham (June 16, Torrey House)
Graham’s latest mystery, set in Mesa Verde National Park and his hometown of Durango, is inspired by the news (reported in October) that the ancestral remains of Native American tribes that once called those cliff dwellings home are now coming back to Southwest Colorado — after sitting in a museum in Finland for more than 100 years. Early reviews have called it an “absorbing psychological mystery” and a book that ”turns our national parks into places of equal parts beauty … and danger.”

Familiar Creatures creates 80’s jingle with brewing company
Familiar Creatures creates retro 80’s jingle for craft beer drinking dads
Devils Backbone Brewing Company partnered with Familiar Creatures for the second year in a row to launch their new paid social media campaign. To speak directly to the brewer’s millennial dad target, the ad agency created videos with a nostalgic jingle sung over-romanticised, tongue-in-cheek visuals. The retro approach is intended to stand out in the social media space, where brands often strive to be trendy, hip and relevant.
Working with the music composition company Overcoast, Familiar Creatures wrote a feel-good jingle that encourages drinkers to slow down and savour a moment with their beer. Overcoast then commissioned a musician who’s sung jingles for Folgers, Gillette and Big Red Gum, popular staples of 80’s advertising.
“Devils Backbone makes complex, yet approachable craft beers and brews that are made to be sipped. We wanted to capture this feeling of taking a moment with your drink, almost treating it like a buddy,” said Justin Bajan, co-founder of Familiar Creatures. “This kind of feeling hearkens back to simpler days so we thought a heartfelt, yet cheeky jingle was the way to go. Overcoast crushed it like always.”
The films were shot by local photographer and Director Brian Camp, who scouted various scenic areas in Virginia to showcase the actors and the beers.
“Even though these will live on Instagram and Facebook, the jingle itself really feels like a classic from an era of advertising before social media. As soon as we heard it we started humming all around the brewery. We showed it to our wholesalers and they couldn’t stop humming it either,” remarked Marisa Black, Director of Marketing at Devils Backbone.

Latte perks: VendiBean finds niche in local tech offices
Folgers and a Bunn brewer aren’t cutting it for millennial workers. “Coffee” means something else to the Starbucks generation.
That’s why trendy offices around San Diego have a sleek new latte machine humming quietly in their break rooms — the VendiBean robot. Designed by a couple of local college students barely in their 20s, the machines are a noticeable improvement on the hospital-grade coffee stations of yesteryear. VendiBean uses artisanal coffee beans from local roasters like Ryan Bros., and the machine grinds it freshly for every cup. The founders said they also hunted for high quality milks and offer non-dairy options for the vegans. The result? VendiBean’s coconut mocha lattes rival those of chain coffee shops.
Tumblr media
Founded by sister brother duo Teal, 24, and Tristan Cooper, 22, last year, VendiBean was meant to be the 24-hour stop for young folks looking for their coffee fix. The siblings planned to roll out the machine on every college campus and shopping mall across San Diego. But it turns out retail wasn’t going to work.
“We wanted to place it in huge foot-traffic locations, but the bigger and better the location the more red tape there is,” Teal said. “The sales cycle is long and it’s really difficult to get in — especially for a startup.”
Instead, VendiBean found a niche in the corporate arena — particularly in youthful offices focused on perks for their employees. Teal said the company has 42 machines deployed in San Diego, including at the coworking space Downtown Works, branding firm Smashtech, and major campuses like Hewlett Packard and Cox Communications.
Teal said the office niche came as a surprise, with companies reaching out to her instead of the other way around. Many employers, especially in fields like marketing and technology, are looking for small perks to offer employees to keep them around.
“Companies staying ahead of employee culture and engagement trends want to find coffee that matches their culture,” Teal said.
Several employees at the millennial-run Smashtech office crowed over the machine, particularly appreciating the non-dairy options. Justin Griffin, an employee at Smashtech, said it’s like having a barista in the office. Others said they liked using it because it supports local entrepreneurs.
VendiBean is tapping into several trends with its branding. Not only is it vegan-friendly and customizable, but VendiBean has vowed to only use local beans in their machines.
Tumblr media
The company plans to have 150 machines deployed by the end of this year, and the plan is to partner with roasters local to each new region.
“Local coffee roasters truly love what they do, and they’re passionate about the craft so the quality is amazing,” Teal said. “I never wanted to compete with them. First, because I’m not going to be better — they’re amazing at what they do. And second, because I want to support mom and pops and artisanal roasters, not the mainstream brands.”
Teal said VendiBean became profitable this summer, earning revenue monthly from contracts she has with companies. She plans on raising $600,000 in expansion capital to help scale the business, with a target of $300,000 from angels. But, she said fundraising has been tough. It’s difficult to convince startup investors to back a small business like VendiBean. Unlike software and tech startups, the vending machine company doesn’t have intellectual property protecting its core business. The value is in the brand, the niche, and the founding team’s ability to score corporate clients. Teal said there’s a good chance she’ll opt for debt financing instead, as its critical to dominate a market segment quickly.
After tackling the San Diego market, VendiBean plans to roll out in Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
