Post(television)- Jane the Virgin Tv Show (Netflix)
Directed by Melanie Mayron eta, written by Jennie Snyder Urman.Starring- Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Justin Baldoni, and Ivonne Coll.
The subject in the tv show emphasizes the life experience of an early 20-year-old woman who lives within the Latinx community. The show focuses on Jane, played by Gina Rodriguez, and her life as she deals with relationships, writing her romantic novel, working in a world of the rich, and ultimately her journey in the birth of her son and parenting as a Latina woman. This relates to the course topic because it follows a set of main characters who are all a part of the Latinx community. The show also brings up topics of stereotypes, privilege, and the life of women who’s life isn’t turning out how she has always planned. The show later takes a shift to address themes of parenting, financial opportunity, all while the show follows a similar layout of a telenovela. The show shows racial and ethnic identities beautifully, and like mentioned earlier, features a cast of those who fit into such communities, something that most television shows lack.
The show builds off common themes of stereotypes of people within this specific community. Thus, building off the course themes and creating conversations regarding ethnicity. Gina Rodriguez claimed she was excited to take on the role of jane because of the specific stereotypes the role addressed (Din, 2014 ). She also claimed on Entertainment Tonight Online that she was excited the show “introduces young viewers to a strong female lead who is a “size me” rather than a size zero” (Din, 2014). One common stereotype in the show is that Latinx individuals are “uneducated” and “don’t speak English well” (Din, 2014), but Jane stands against this and I not only in her master's program in English but is also writing a book. This is important to note because of the way the show presents stereotypes but then knocks them down by featuring such a, what Entertainment Tonight calls,  ‘Badass’ girl on television (Entertainment Tonight, 2014). Overall, this show gives power to the Latinx characters throughout the series. The show provokes conversations about race and ethnicity all while featuring a culturally diverse cast. The show is powerful and leaves viewers questioning privilege and how one small moment can change your life in seconds.
