9/20: Sunday Morning Thoughts
Last night I went to the Georgetown Courthouse to mourn the death of RBG. I met up with two other people.
I want y'all to know what I saw when I was there:
It was a cool night, like the kind of night where you've got to have something covering your limbs, and the breeze was perfect. Just right for blowing out candles (that's sarcasm), but it really was a pleasant evening.
My fear was that no one would come, which is why I knew at least two people being there was the only thing that propelled me out of the house.
When I got there, I was shocked. It's like the pandemic isn't happening and some people just really like wearing masks. I saw a man dressed as a Confederate Soldier and a woman wearing a Antebellum Southern Belle gown. They were greeting children. My stomach churned: what are they saying? Is this how early indoctrination to White Supremacy happens? Dressing it up like something from Disney World and making it So Cool to see in person? That's not right, right?
But more than that, there were unmasked people, kids--who we now know get and spread the virus--everywhere. There was music playing from a local restaurant. It was like I was in a different world entirely, and it was terrifying to be in. I couldn't even focus on our conversation because in the back of my head, I kept thinking "There's definitely Coronavirus here, and my neighbors don't want to protect me from it." And it was just... really sad, y'all. It was Sad.
I also wasn't surprised that no Black folx could be seen on the lawn around the courthouse. Those I did see were walking the perimeter of the square, or even across the street.
It looked to me a lot like a high school lunch room again. My two friends who came were also just looking around in shock. We had no idea it was this bad this close to Austin. We had no idea the depth of the entrenched self-serving attitude, but we saw it in full force.
I went home, and I had a lot of trouble going to sleep. That feeling of despair woke me up this morning, and it's sitting in my stomach like a rock.
I want you to know what it looked like. I want you to know what you're Not Seeing. The lines have been clearly drawn if you are willing to see them.
Rest in Power RBG, and Thank You for giving me a hard dose of reality last night. May other Americans start to see them, too.

Mistigram: another day, another crime against humanity. Today @horsenburger shares this #teletext memorial to #JavierAmbler: "Every time I saw him, he would kiss me on my forehead. He just had the biggest heart and cared so much about his friends, even people he didn’t know,” said Javier's sister For 15 months after his death his family had only been told he had died in police custody. In June this year they found the details of the events that led to his death, including that his death was filmed by a TV crew (who had since deleted the footage) and that the arrest was so aggressive an officer could be heard saying “ah, pretty sure I just broke his finger.” And this was a man who was unarmed, not resisting, had surrendered, and was repeatedly pleading that he suffered from congestive heart failure. What was his crime? This capital crime was for not stopping after not dimming his headlights. His family and friends suspect that if the police officers had not been with a TV crew from the Live PD show at the time this would never have escalated and Javier might still be alive. All officers involved were cleared after an Internal Affairs investigation, but after the body cam footage was released this week the DA has said the case could go to a grand jury. So, it is possible, but unlikely that justice may be served. #JusticeForJavierAmbler #BlackLivesMatter https://instagr.am/p/CBbSkbunCVt/
