The Bad Batch as Penguins of Madagascar Quotes
Bc I’ve seen a few posts making this magnificent comparison and both of these squads are near and dear to my heart and bc I need a distraction from the s3 premiere ahhh
Tech: *mission relevant info* Hunter: Tell me something I don’t know! Tech: Without mucus your stomach would digest itself Hunter: … Hunter: Tell me something else I don’t know…something less disturbing
Hunter: (to Caleb) It's okay, kid. We're not going to hurt you Crosshair: *cocks his gun* Not true, Hunter, they did authorize lethal force
Wrecker: *absolutely decking his bros* You pillow fight like a bunch of little girls!
Crosshair: What part of "zip it" eludes you?! The "zip" or the "it"?!
Echo: I don't mind saying it, that guy vexes me. *narrows eyes* He's a vexer.
Hunter: Boys, no training tonight. It's game night! Tech: Trivia! Let's play trivia! I dominate trivia! Omega: Oh! Can we play Simon Says this week? Tech: Yes, Simon says we play TRIVIA!!
Crosshair: I find reason tedious and boring. We'll use force.
Echo: I'm sorry, boys. I sometimes resort to sarcasm when facing the unknown Tech: No doubt
Hunter: Oh I’ve seen accident prone, try Wrecker and Crosshair! With a Chandrilan lantern! And SIX BOTTLES of rocket fuel!! Tech: Worst talent show ever
Hunter: There's no such thing as too paranoid, Omega. Remember that, and forget you ever heard it!
Tech: SCIENCE! WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?!?
Omega: I have an idea! But I'm not sure how safe it is Wrecker: I like it already!
Crosshair: *while fighting* You cannot win, Hunter! I am fueled with a boiling hate! A raging fury! Hunter: And a babbling mouth! *slaps him*
Omega: No! I swore I’d never use my adorability as a weapon again, and I meant it!
Echo: Wrecker, cover Omega’s ears, I intend to use my angry words
Tech: This red line shows the frustration level of a really smart person forced to take orders from some dunder-brained boob. As you can see the frustration just keeps rising and rising and rising. I mean, why don't they put the smart guy in charge, huh? IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE! SOMETHING HAS GOT TO GIVE, PEOPLE! AM I THE ONLY ONE SEEING THIS?!
Wrecker and Omega: *run in making incomprehensible panicked noises* Hunter: Anyone catch that? Echo: *nonchalantly interprets it exactly* The Batch: … Echo: What? I’m fluent in panic
Tech: Cool cars go faster. That's a scientific fact.
Cody, in his one episode: I believe now I know why “volunteers” ends in “tears”
Hunter: No batcher gets left behind, that’s why! Wrecker: What about Crosshair? Hunter: Okay, one batcher gets left behind Omega: and Echo? Hunter: Maybe two batchers get left behind Tech: Um… Hunter: *groan* Comparatively few batchers get left behind, okay?!
Omega: I thought you agreed this was a dangerous weapon! Wrecker: Which is the best kind! What good is a safe weapon?! Tech: He has a point
Hunter: Avert your eyes, young Omega, you’ll never be able to unsee this! Tech, recording bc that’s his freaking hobby: Don’t worry about it I’ll burn you a dvd!
Crosshair: *standing outside the Marauder* Hunter! I have brought you a hand drawn greeting card! It says “Roses are red. Posies are green. Sorry about Bracca, I was too mean. Your pal, Crosshair” :) Hunter: *walks out and shreds the card*
Hunter: Get up here. That’s an order! Tech: *salutes* Permission to defy order? Hunter: Permission denied! Tech: Then I deny your denial (sorry)
Echo: *watching Hunter and Wrecker, captured and surrounded by stormtroopers* Well this hardly seems fair Echo: *jumps in a walker and defeats them easily* Told you it wasn't fair
*Phee and Tech kiss* Omega: *eyes being covered by Hunter* awww Wrecker: Finally!

Jess and Rory were bound to fall apart in S3. They were two teenagers living in a crazy town that put ALL kinds of pressure on them, they were headed down very different paths, and Jess wasn't ready for a relationship at that point. They had to go their separate ways for a bit.
But what really makes them tragic? Is that all of the adults - and eventually Jess and Rory themselves - come to understand their relationship's demise as entirely Jess' fault. And this narrative is really bad for both of them.
We all know Jess' mistakes in this relationship. The show makes a point to blow them up and examine them thoroughly, often with multiple characters chiming in to talk about how terrible Jess is. A single missed phone call, concert tickets purchased for the wrong reason (??), a poorly-timed black eye, a fight with Dean, the fact he left town. All of these choices are discussed and framed as solely Jess' fault. Jess' behaviors get no context. It doesn't matter that he was working late, that Rory yelled at him throughout that dinner, that Dean threw the first punch, or that Luke kicked him out. S3 decidedly concludes with Rory, The Poor Victim and Jess, The Jerk Who Broke Her Heart. The show never re-examines this perspective.
But if you pause and examine Rory's choices throughout their relationship, she doesn't look that good. Their relationship starts with a lie: Rory kissing him, demanding he keep it secret, and then ghosting him for two months. She's really angry with him when she returns, having sincerely expected him to wait around for her while she continued to date Dean. She withdraws her friendship while Jess dates Shane. She yells at him in the street, joining the chorus of townsfolk who publicly dislike him. She eggs his car and mocks him about it. She runs away from their first real kiss with zero explanation. She scolds him for kissing her in public, prioritizing Dean's feelings over her boyfriend's. She lies about Dean repeatedly. She gives him the silent treatment after a single missed phone call. She tricks him into attending dinner with her grandma, then yells at him the whole time. She spends the entirety of Kyle's party mocking Jess while ignoring his increasingly desperate pleas to leave.
Does any of this make Rory a terrible person? No. She's a teenager, and she was in a really complicated, no-win situation concocted by her mother and a slew of Stars Hollow adults who are far too obsessed with the love lives of teenagers. Rory's a people-pleaser and she was desperate to spare everyone's feelings, unable to accept that by nature of this situation: somebody was gonna get hurt no matter what. But in trying to protect everyone, she ended up hurting Jess the most. She doesn't trust him, she doesn't prioritize his feelings, and she doesn't communicate with him. She ultimately follows along with the town narrative that Jess Ruined Everything.
The really sad thing is that this narrative is bad for both of them. Jess ends up feeling like the world's biggest failure, fleeing town without a word and ending up totally alone. Rory ends up feeling like a helpless victim, utterly lacking agency in her own relationships. She is told, over and over again, that her relationship problems were not her fault. That it's normal to sit back, make no effort, and expect to be treated like a princess by a guy who has to read her mind and do absolutely all the work. You can draw a straight line from Rory being Blameless in the Jess breakup, and Rory having an affair with her married ex a year later.
What I would give for an effort to re-examine their relationship toward the end of the series! It would have been good for both of them to understand that they were both kids, they both made mistakes, but they both tried their best. There were no villains here. Just two flawed humans who cared about each other and tried to have a relationship before they were truly ready.

HEYY YOUR SO PRETTY BTW AND I LOVE YOUR BLOG
the ask :
so, i wanted to get ur opinion on s3 mike. such as, what he was going through and his internalized homophobia. things like that!
maybe some things w/ him and his relationship w/ el too!
THANKS FOR ANSWERING IF U DO ANSWER :D
I’m gonna pretend that I’m fine after weeks of getting flustered just staring at this in my inbox! Thank you, anon!!! 🥺🥺 You’re making me blush! But, uh, anyways! Let’s talk about Mike Wheeler! 💙
I think that Mike in season 3 is the most interesting version of himself in the entire show because of how hidden his story becomes. In all other seasons, Mike cries openly with other people and expresses his sadness and fears over Will and El.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In season 3, though? Besides the finale, the tearful goodbyes narrated by Hopper, we never see Mike truly cry and explicitly talk through why. Sure, it can be pretty readily implied that it’s because of the Byers leaving, but we don’t hear that aloud. We don’t see exactly who’s on Mike’s mind as those cars pull away. We're left with silent and unsure stares, looks of seeming regret or something else unknown.
Tumblr media
Season 3 is truly a huge turning point for Mike, he’s losing his girlfriend and arguably his closest friend in the Party, and it's so easily overlooked because it all happens at the very end of the final episode. Whereas El goes through hell and fights to connect to Billy and save her friends, where Max also feels the weight of his loss, where Will gets his heartbreaking scene at Castle Byers - all the Party members who are very linked to Mike get their emotional moments that season, and we know exactly why they cry.
But Mike dances around his emotions all season long. In consulting Lucas to deal with breaking up and making up with El, in trying to tell El that he loves her without ever saying it, in fighting with Will because "it's not [his] fault [Will doesn't] like girls."
Tumblr media
Oh, Mike. I really don't think that Mike was out to hurt Will when he said that. Rather, it's a culmination of heteronormativity and the poor relationship that he has with El and trying to compensate for it. I interpret the outburst as him saying, 'it's not my fault that I'm in a relationship and you're not, so you wouldn't get it.' And by extension, Will being in a relationship would require, normatively, being with a girl.
But at the same time, for a jab that deep - I can't help but question more.
Mike could have said, "it's not my fault you don't like anyone!" or "don't bring her into this!" or even as simple as, "you wouldn't understand!" But no. Mike takes the direct train to sexuality station and brings up the fact that El is a girl. So it seems to me that Mike is very likely harboring something in his heart about why El being a girl is important for him to argue.
But we never know for sure. This moment is never addressed again due to the Mind Flayer’s sudden return. And so it’s up to us as the audience to decide what we think of Mike’s statement. And personally, as I’m sure many of you believe, too, I think that Mike is projecting and trying to hide the fact that he doesn’t like girls onto Will, pushing away his problems to someone he trusts who’s more similar to himself than he realizes.
Tied to his inability to say to El’s face that he loves her, to the fact that they've - reportedly from Hopper - kissed all Summer long with no mention of meaningful conversation, to the very surface-level relational mending his makes by calling El’s outfit “cool” and giving her candy, to the very end of the season where Mike once again denies saying that he loved El just before an open-eyed kiss and a face like this:
Tumblr media
Mike doesn’t need to say anything about that kiss for me to know that that’s not the reaction of someone who’s perfectly happy to be back together with his ex-girlfriend. So do I wish that we had a moment of vulnerability for Mike where he expressed his heart in season 3? Yes, but his nonverbals spoke volumes.
So, yeah, I think that in season 3, Mike is very much gay, but he he acts cautiously and self-preservingly because trauma is drowning everything out.
And what is this trauma? I know that I’m working backwards, but I need to bring up that Mike was separated from El for so long in the time of season 2, and I think that that makes him so attached to her in season 3. Think about what else he says in that scene when he admits his love: “I love her and I can’t lose her again.”
As sweet as it is to be reunited to El by the end of season 2, it’s not a clean reunion for Mike. He’s in shambles when he learns that Hopper was lying to him and not letting El even tell Mike that she’s okay.
Tumblr media
Not to mention that this isn’t his first but second time almost losing her to the monster that season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of this unstable connection, I think that Mike has built a protective relationship with El, one that focuses on keeping her rather than knowing her, and we see how that all unfolds with his superficial “superhero” complex he has of her in season 4. Season 3 was just the beginning.
And so I think that Mike in season 3 stands as a version of himself that’s confused protectiveness with love. Even though he arguably behaves with that same mindset all the time, it’s at its highest during season 3 because of his never-ending insistence to help El even if she’s capable to do things by herself. Mike isn’t just clingy, he’s worried. Worried for her life. There’s no time to worry about where the problems in their relationship arise, there’s only time to fix them and go back to how they were at equilibrium - when things were normal.
Thus, Mike behaves rather stubbornly. He’s insistent and defensive, not letting a single thing slip through the cracks and risk any more hurt. In doing so, his personality is left far under the surface and unexplored. He only acts to stir up emotions rather than reflect on them, because any pausing to think will only confuse him more. He’s looking ahead, looking at the light, holding onto everything good he has with all the propriety of a 13/14-year-old who has a heart bigger than his head.
Simply put, Mike is a bit of an anti-hero this season. And I think that it's because of this that he starts to get most controversial for the audience.
I’m clearly a Mike apologist, but I genuinely don’t think that he’s out to hurt anyone when he argues with others this season. He’s just stubborn and loud about it, which can definitely be to his fault at times. But in the end, when it comes down to who he loves, I think that season 3 is the era of change, and that ending scene with Hopper’s letter paints the perfect setup for the next seasons to reveal that Mike has a lot more going on under the surface that’s causing all of this. Maybe some regrets, things he wishes he could “turn back the clock” on, regarding, say, Will and El and how he treats them platonically and romantically? Just a thought.
Tumblr media
The question of the day for Mike in season 3 stands: is he being selfish or selfless? And I think that it’s a mix of both, blended in with some heavy confusion due to role changing (not needing to protect El) and uncertain affections (not knowing how to figure out what he has with Will).
So, yeah. All in all, I think that Mike is really closeted in season 3 and doesn’t realize it until the final episode, and I honestly love him for it. As someone who’s gone through similar hurdles of internalized homophobia as a teen, it’s really heartwarming to see him grow and figure things out, even if the journey is far from perfect. It’s a humble origin story. And if he somehow ends up being straight and Byler isn’t endgame, well. I’ll be upset at the writers, but the impact still stands.

the most i'll ever write b*lly into one of my fics. this was written over the summer (or maybe spring?) and i just found it and cleaned it up. pre-s3. summer of 1985 shenanigans. ft slurpees, steve being annoyed, and a fist fight at 7-11.
Excuse Me, This is a 7-11 in 1985
“No way!” Steve scolds, the top half of his body turned and facing the backseat. “Shoes off the seats, Mayfield!”
“Don’t be such a buzzkill,” Robin says, swinging her own drink around too much for Steve's liking as she flings herself into the passenger seat.
He’s too nice. He’s way too fucking nice. He was too nice when Max and Lucas showed up in front of Scoops Ahoy, stranded because they missed the last bus. Which meant Robin also missed the last bus, which meant he had no choice but to offer them all rides home.
Too nice to say no when they were about to pass the 7-11 and they all perked up. They didn’t even have to ask, he just pulled into the parking lot.
He’s too nice.
“Thanks for the treat, Dingus.” Robin says, spraying crumbs of her ho-ho all over the front seat. He pretends not to notice. If he thinks about it for too long, he’ll end up plowing the front of his car right into the convenience store in front of him.
Well, not in front of them. Off to the left, giving them all a view of the entire lot. Watching cars pull in, the four of them watching the other patrons, being nosy.
It wasn’t unusual for cars to come and go from the parking lot at this hour. There was not much else to do at this hour in a shit hole town once the mall closed.
What was unusual was the sight of a familiar blue Camero, following close behind a familiar van.
Steve furrows his brow at the sight, shakes his head. Probably a drug deal or something. He takes a loud slurp of his cherry slurpee as he shuts his car off, makes sure the lights are all  off, just to ease the anxiety he can feel emanating from the two kids hanging out in his backseat.
Robin, who doesn’t know exactly what happened, but knows the gist of Steve coming to school with his face bashed just last fall, looks at him.
“Maybe we should get going?” She suggests. Steve looks at her and then back at Max, waiting for her to make the call.
“I don’t…” Max starts, but fades out, her face scrunching up in curiosity. Steve follows her eyeline back to the cars, which are now parked so that the Camero is blocking in the van. Steve immediately turns the car on. Lucas starts hitting him in the arm repeatedly.
“What the hell are you doing?! What if he sees us!?” Lucas’ voice going up about sixteen octaves.
As they pull up, they see two figures talking, or arguing more like, in front of the Camero. The headlights highlight the silhouettes of both Billy and the owner of the van, Eddie Munson. Neither of them paying any attention to the fact that Steve’s car is approaching them for a better view of their argument. Which is all it looks like, raised voices at each other.
Then, Billy shoves Eddie. Hard.
“Let’s just go, Steve. We don’t wanna get —”
“Oh shit!” Max yells from the backseat.
Steve barely catches the sight of Eddie decking Billy in the face, sending him on his ass almost instantaneously.
“Oh my god!” Lucas yells, as Eddie scrambles on top of him, punching him repeatedly .
“Get his ass!” Max shouts, as Billy starts to hit back.
“Should we do something? Should we help him?” Robin sounds panicked.
As soon as the words leave her mouth, they see police lights in the distance.
Fuck it, Steve thinks. He whips his car up to the side of the fight, rolls his window down as he does.
“Munson!” He yells as he brings the car to harsh stop.
Eddie stops, eyes look glazed over and out of breath. Steve ignores the twinge in his stomach.
“Get  in!” Max yells, flinging her door open. Eddie, without hesitation, dives into the back seat. The door slams shut as Steve peels out of the lot, over the curb, and jams out of there. Robin’s yelling, Lucas is screaming like a little girl, Max is laughing, and Eddie is stunned silent, wringing out his scratched up hands.
“Nice uniform, Harrington.”
Yeah. Steve is definitely too nice.

s4 episode 1 thoughts
ah, the first ep of a new season. it has such a fresh feeling to it each time! and according to that poll i reblogged, s4 is a fan-favorite (along with s3). well, i really liked s3, so i hope i’m in for more of that!
overall, this was a wild episode. things just! kept! happening! so fast! in fact, i think it will take me a while to gather my thoughts on the stuff that was happening, because it was occurring so rapidly! but luckily, i am familiar enough with the monster of the week format by now to know that i have some time to process all these events, because most episodes will be entirely unrelated to the plot action that went down today. so good episode, but separated scully and mulder + so much plot so fast = not a GOAT ep for me. and with this being said, back to my liveblogging!
it feels that it has been so long!!! maybe even a full WEEK! or more!! since i watched the last episode! i recall, however, not being very impressed due to lack of scully. so let’s see if this episode can change my opinion.
so, reading the description, it seems this alien fellow is referred to as “Bounty Hunter”. i’ve been calling him "alien hit man" for 2 seasons now, so this will be an adjustment. the seriousness with which i take using his proper name is yet to be determined. and we get some alleged samantha lore here?!?! will it actually be true?!? i assume everything about samantha will be a lie forever
i want to know how jeremiah smith gets out of this sticky situation, so let us continue together and see what happens to our agents.
“last season on the x files…” yes yes, this was probably a vital refresher for those who had to wait a year in between seasons. and also for me who had to wait a week, which as i am sure you can imagine was JUST as excruciating!
in my absence, i seem to have forgotten how terribly beautiful this mulder fellow is. rest assured that i am now remembering as we get a little recap.
but oh! we do not begin in the fight scene where we ended last time. we begin in… a van? of a fellow who is fixing a power line? is this some more TV mind control stuff…..? (no, thankfully, it was not)
there is a bug by his ear and he slaps it. and then we see the bee on the ground struggling while a bunch of kids gather around. they all look the same and seem to be multiplying. which is very weird but i feel bad for the bee.
5 creepy blond identical children watch this man DIE after being stung??? he’s writhing up on the cable pole and then he FALLS and all the kids surround him like jackals... omg… very much gives the impression they are gonna eat him. but they just walk away after staring at this body for a bit which is maybe even creepier. hard to say.
what do the children know…….?
(intro time) (<3)
HEY WHAT THE HELL? i interrupt making a heart emoji by hand to inform you that the words on the screen do NOT read “the truth is out there”, but today they say “everything dies”. this is NOT a good sign for mrs. mulder or jeremy smith omg…
i know our agents aren’t kicking the bucket yet though because we have a few more seasons!!!
okay, NOW back to mulder and scully and jeremy and the bounty hunter. mulder tells scully to not get in the bounty hunter's way, and she immediately does and gets knocked over, which is a little comical- but you can’t blame a girl for trying!!!
mulder is now chasing jeremy and in turn being chased by the bounty hunter through some weird warehouse-y building, with scully not too far behind. the screen is very dark and it is hard to see things. mulder comes face-to-face with the bounty hunter but they just look at each other and then run after their real target, which is probably a good thing, because we have seen the bounty hunter kick mulder’s ass before, and i’m not really feeling a rematch at this point in time.
no, jeremy! the bounty hunter approaches, and to escape him, he jumps off of the roof. mulder is taking jeremy down to the car where scully shall be the getaway driver. i'm in the getaway car, i left you in the hotel bar, etc.
until the bounty hunter DROPS on their window like a spider!!!!! so she honks the horn for a very long time, which was deserved.
okay, so back into the maze of the building. mulder and jeremy are running on foot. mulder hides in some bushes!!! then LEAPS out and STABS THE BOUNTY HUNTER in the base of his neck!! omg!! the one spot where these beings can be killed!!! i knew sneaky mulder was gonna set some sort of trap, i just didn’t think he would have such good luck with his aim!
yes, he did it!!! the poison goop is coming from the base of the bounty hunter’s neck. but jeremiah is motoring away on a little boat, saying more killers will be after him. mulder yells after him that he needs help; his mother is dying. and i think it is fair to save a life after mulder saved his, so maybe, just maybe, they can buzz to the hospital reallllly quick before they let him go… back to space, or whatever.
scully has found the dead bounty hunter, and is looking for mulder, who has gotten on the boat with jeremy and sailed away, i guess. rude as hell to leave her stranded there!!
she keeps going back to the body and i’m yelling NO GIRL, THE BLOOD GAS but NO! that is not even the biggest problem, for the bounty hunter is ALIVE! he grabs her throat and chokes her, which had to absolutely SUCK to film.
he keeps asking where they’re going while he’s choking her, and that seems to be a bad way to get answers. she says she doesn’t know, but in my head i’m yelling, just say they’re going to the mall!! lie!! lie!!! they’re going to the mall. a dude in the food court claims to be an alien expert who knows information on samantha’s whereabouts. they want to see the guy at quizno’s knew about jeremy’s existence. send him on a side quest!!! but she just says she doesn’t know, which is fine, too.
anyway, back to mulder and jeremy disembarking from the boat. jeremy says that the government men will be waiting for them at the hospital in mrs. mulder’s room, but mulder tries to counter by saying that if the government men do anything there, they will be exposed. well! i think this is faulty reasoning because they might just kill all of you, but i see that he wants this to be true for the sake of his mother.
jeremy explains that they are working on colonization, and if they kill him, he sure can’t help his mother, which makes sense to me even if it is deeply unfortunate. or, he says... mulder can stop it! mulder, stopping colonization?! that is a large task for one guy...
OH! jeremy claims that he can take mulder to a place where there is a “work in progress” and SEE HIS SISTER??? how do we know that isn’t another TRICK!!!! i always suspect deception when it comes to his sister, because they know that claiming to have information on her can get him to do anything they please.
cutscene to the hospital, where CANCER MAN is holding mrs. scully’s hand (LET GO, FREAK!) and some lackey says that “he isn’t coming”
GASP! this lackey pulls out the pictures of cancer man at mrs. mulder’s house and suggests… a SECURITY LEAK! he proposes planting information to see where it flows… information that mrs. mulder’s life is in “unnatural danger”… oh no… will X see through the trickery?
back to scully cam. her phone is ringing. mulder wants to know where she is: “i’m right where you left me, mulder” OHHH! get him again for me. and when he asks why she is still there, she says it’s because he wouldn’t answer his phone and she didn’t know what to do :( which is so sad
but what about the bounty hunter……
NO!!!! he’s right behind her in the car, holding the needle up to her neck through the phone!! she’s trying to get him to stfu, but he keeps yapping about stealing a car in alberta, and revealing all his plans to the bounty hunter!!!!
so he just lets her go after hearing where mulder is, which is lowkey crazy, but she tells him that the bounty hunter is coming after him. and that he is in fact NOT dead. so now what do mulder and jeremy do about these plans they have made and just revealed to their enemy????
anyway, mulder and jeremy are in the hills of alberta where we earlier saw the dude who got stung by a bee drop dead. and mulder's face is all beat up and it’s kinda endearing... like aww, let me put a bandage on you.
scully is going to skinner’s office, who has summoned her. she lies that her and mulder are okay, and it’s a pretty visible lie in terms of body language, so i imagine skinner catches onto that. but he’s like, why tf are there 5 dudes at the social security administration all called jeremy smith and with the same face? and what do you know about them?
well she’s honest in this regard at least, and says idk. but the nerd down at the labs can see that each of the 5 jeremys had very weird data on their computers.
“enough to fill seven ten-gigabyte hard drives” hold on. okay so that is, in modern terms, not a whole lot of stuff. like a 68 GB flash drive at target rn is $6, and it's even a nice blue color. so i’m wondering how much stuff you can stick on there but honestly i do need to get back to the plot at hand and stop looking up the differences between flash and hard drives. he says it’s “a billion entries” which is a lot!
scully thinks it might be a code!!! and she thinks she might be able to crack it!!!! wahoooo!!! code time! code time!! i love when she is in her sleuthing era!! and the lab nerd (revealed to be named "agent pendrell") says "seriously?" when she says she thinks she can crack it, but i wouldn't have said that, because i trust in her skills.
she says there is someone she wants to run it by… is it the lone gunmen? the navajo representative? her dad’s old friend? who could it be?
back to mulder and jeremy running through the hills of canada, arguably even frolicking. where they come across the dead guy!!! he is bubbling and covered in bugs…… so the death was yesterday. and jeremy knows what killed him!!! he’s being VERY WEIRD!!!
gag… the body looks soooooo nasty... but as always, to cope with this, i give a shoutout to the props department. but i WILL gag.
so they’re at their destination, which is… a “flowering shrub”? being grown for pollen? and worked by a bunch of kids like the creepy ones from before. what the hell do aliens want with some pollen...
MULDER THINKS ONE OF THE KIDS IS HIS SISTER??? but she’s still a child!!!!! how could this be?
i’m suspecting trickery here. either way, he goes right in after her, calling her name. NOOOOO- he gets on his knees, grabs her arms, and says “it’s me, fox, your brother” and she has no readable expression whatsoever NOOOOO omg WHAT SORT OF TORTURES HAVE THEY CONCOCTED TO PUT THIS MAN THROUGH???
(i’m operating under the assumption that it is Not Actually Her)
she just looks at him…. and jeremy says “she has no language”, and is a drone…. he says he has more to show him so that he might understand. YOU MADE A CHILD A DRONE? and you're supposed to be THE GOOD ONE, JEREMY?
(if this actually is samantha and they hurt her like that i’m going to choke slam this jeremy fellow into the core of the earth)
mulder naturally wants to know what tf is going on, and jeremy says the drones are stationed here as part of an agrarian workforce, where they take care of themselves, and “parenting is unnecessary”. oh i just KNOW that at this point if i were mulder and someone told me parenting his long lost sister "wasn't necessary”, i would have started throwing hands. what an insult to injury, taking her away and saying that she doesn't even deserve someone to look after her, when all he has wanted for so long was to do just that...
and a bunch of other kids come out ALL WITH HER FACE and the boys have the fact of that CREEPY BLOND KID FROM BEFORE!!! CLONING??? did they CLONE HER???? yes they did. so they’re clones but... where is the OG samantha??????
this is soooooo fucked up like WHERE is his REAL and ACTUAL sister and what can we do to free these identical children!!!!!
scully is going to mulder’s place to put an x tape on the window. oh no! but what if X HAS really been fed lies??? (she also bites the tape again which i still think is funny)
i am observing mulder’s apartment as she tries to crack the code whilst waiting for his arrival. sadly, i cannot work out the names of the books on his shelves.
someone knocks and she grabs her gun… but it is, in fact, X, our man of the hour. AND OH NO!!! he does say he has information concerning mulder’s mother!!! NOOOOOOO, i was hoping he would be more discerning than this and not fall for such a trap!!
scully doesn’t seem to be buying it… X refuses to talk to her, and says to get in contact with mulder, but she is insisting he gives her information on the code.
he knows what the various entries are… they’re about the smallpox eradication program. but X is telling her not to open doors she isn’t ready for. so what does THAT mean???? he leaves by saying “protect the mother” ummmm okay...
WAIT! if she goes there then they’ll think SHE is the spy, right??? or no… because they know she wouldn’t have access to information at that level, so someone would have to give it to her. lie and say krychek gave it to her. idk just lie!!!
back to this weird little town. mulder is trying to take the little girl with them, which pisses jeremy off (STOP… HE WANTED TO TAKE HER WITH THEM I’ll SOB 😭)
he’s all “she’s not your sister” and “you have a chance to understand something so much greater” but he won’t do any actual explaining. condescending fuck. and when explanation is requested, who rolls up but the bounty hunter!!!
now they’re sprinting off to a place… where the girl is taking them. a place filled with the bees who killed that guy earlier!! mulder learns that while jeremy and samantha clone have immunity to the killer bees, he does not.
so now he’s covered in killer bees and to protect himself he DOUSES HIS BODY IN GASOLINE and therefore cannot see a single thing and needs to be led along by this small child who looks like his sister but isn’t. they are in a building filled with evil evil evil looking bees and their evil honey... but they realize they have been trapped by the bounty hunter when they look up and see a hole in the sky.
the bounty hunter is entering into this cavernous honey town, and sees only the gasoline can and many bees, but no people. until they break a wall of honeycomb they were hiding behind down directly on top of him, and the bounty hunter is swarmed by them!!!! he seems to be busy being hurt by them. so i guess they will hurt him, but not kill him? noted. need to keep track of the alien species rules.
okay, so back to the lab nerd, agent pendrell, who frantically adjusts his tie as scully walks in with a break on the data. yeah don't think i missed that. that actor wanted to make his 5 minutes of screen time count. i see you!
“you say a twenty letter code to any scientist, and they immediately think ‘protein amino acid sequence code’, which is what this turned out to be” <- i love her so terribly i can’t even form a decent sentence to describe it. it's actually embarrassing but whatever.
and it’s a code for cowpox virus, which was used to vaccinate people against smallpox! so why were they keeping vaccine records… besides for the obvious reason of making sure that smallpox is defeated?
well, that doesn’t matter right now, because the big question is: what is with this second alpha numeric string? each with an infinite number of variations?
she says it’s an inventory… of us… and pulls off her jacket to reveal a bandage on her arm. which i’m sure had that nerd sweating.
(did she like get a shot in the time whilst mulder was MIA... i’m confused) (<- lmao sometimes i just do not understand wtf is going on and it is really funny reading these notes back)
she’s presenting her theory and an image created by “a confocal microscope” to some people in skinner’s office. and i’m not sure i’ve ever been more in love before, but whatever. she’s explaining it’s a protein’s location, a cowpox protein, number 6 to be exact, thank you!
OH! it came from her! she got a biopsy taken from her vaccination scar. which makes a lot more sense than getting your flu shot while doing important FBI work. although getting your flu shot IS important it’s just. you know. bigger fish to fry n all that.
she got this image “through a process called immunohisto chemical staining and through the addition of an antibody” <- unfortunately her saying all this is incredibly attractive to me
but there’s important business at hand. she thinks anybody who has been vaccinated over the past 50 years might have a marker in them!!
oh, low blow from the guy who said this sounds like something that would come from mulder….
but she performed the same procedure on agent pendrell i’m CRYING he is SOOOOOOO down bad for herrrrrr 😭😭😭😭
and his protein is different even though it should be the same as hers!! DEEPLY suspicious!
“so what you’re saying, agent scully, is we’re being catalogued, tagged, and inventoried?” well yes skinner, i do believe that is what she is saying!
by who and for what purpose? she doesn’t know. but jeremiah smith probably does!
skinner wants to talk to scully ALONE! he looks MAD and asks “do you realize what you are promoting” and she cuts him off with “i am a SCIENTIST, sir” OHHHHHH YES!!! shut him up!!!!!!!!!!! and isn’t that why she was assigned to the x files in the first place?!?!?! YES EXACTLY!!!!! TELL HIM!!!!!!!
pained skinner expression as her phone goes off. it’s mulder, and she needs to meet him. she says “just tell me where” (ohhh my god the way they’d do anything for each other…)
he explains that he and jeremiah smith and “someone else” need to be at mrs. mulder’s hospital room, where she has to wait and keep her safe.
she says a lot of people want to talk to jeremiah smith and will be there, but who comes barreling down the road to get mulder and the squad as she says this, but the damn bounty hunter!!!! omg!!! can this dude just die already!! damn!!!
the bounty hunter runs his van STRAIGHT into the car with jeremy and “samantha”!!! and when the bounty hunter picks mulder up by his throat, he begs for jeremy and his sister’s life, while bounty hunter says “he shows you pieces, but tells you nothing of the whole” which i do feel is deeply true. but jeremy being a “traitor to the project” isn’t really feeling as damning as having a crop of brainwashed clone children harvest killer honey to me personally.
so mulder says “kill me, and let them go”, and that he would TRADE HIS LIFE FOR HIS MOTHER’S!!!!!! the bounty hunter says that “everything dies” while jeremy tries to make an escape.
(omg is he really willing to sacrifice his life… or is he just saying anything to buy jeremy more time???)
bounty hunter TOSSES mulder into a truck, picks up the needle to go after him, while samantha clone starts screaming... NOOOO that poor girl😭
back at the hospital, scully, skinner, and the guys have been waiting for five hours, with nothing to show for it. it’s starting to compromise the treatment of patients, says a random nurse. but in walks mulder!!!
“oh my god, mulder!” scully says, running to him, while he mumbles “i can’t, there’s nothing”, and other nonsensical phrases, which begs the question: WHAT HAPPENED IN THOSE FIVE HOURS????
she’s feeling him, saying he’s freezing and in shock, and he can’t even stumble to the right hospital room door to find his mother without scully’s help. but he gets there and looks at his mother while scully wraps a blanket around him, and he mumbles that "she’ll never know".
and he’s CRYING, and he LEANS DOWN so scully can hold him while he sobs into her shoulder (height difference height difference oh my GOD its so painful and terribly tender)
WHAT WILL SHE NEVER KNOW?? WHAT DID HE SEE?????
just when i expect an emotional climax, we change scenes to mulder’s place, where footsteps are approaching. X lets himself into the apartment, but seems to realize that something is… afoot.
he goes for the elevator to escape, when a man FIRES TWO SHOTS INTO HIM!!! NOOOO X!!!
we had a rocky relationship but i never wanted it to end in this fashion……….
(is it inappropriate to wait until he’s dead to say that i’ve always thought he was handsome….)
well. um. we don’t get a lot of time to linger on that.
back to mrs. mulder. mulder has his head in his hands, saying they could have saved her, that he had once chance. and he tells scully that he saw his sister. and she was just a little girl.
it’s not clear if scully can tell he’s speaking the truth or if she thinks he is still saying random stuff in shock, but he says that he’s seen too much to not believe. she counters that she believes they have a place to begin in looking for answers.
“you put such faith in your science, scully, but… the things i’ve seen, science provides no place to start”
“nothing happens in contradiction to nature, only in contradiction to what we know of it- and that’s a place to start”
OOOOOH BANGER LINE!!!!! such hope there is in understanding the world that seems impossible to comprehend, if only we seek out the knowledge to grasp it!!!! if we admit what we don’t know and start where we do until we reach the Truth!!!
this line coaxes a smile out of him, and she adds “that’s where the hope is”, and i think i understand scully on a molecular level.
but he is still in agony over there. he feels he came close, and she feels it too.
and as she says she was warned by X about his mother being in danger, and that he is who can lead them to a place to start, we see him dragging himself down mulder’s hallway, gasping for breath, before finally collapsing, having written “SRSG” in his OWN BLOOD???????? HOLY HELL??? that was very metal in a fashion i was not expecting…….. rip X :(
as much as i feel like we need some time to linger on that we really aren't given any in terms of the episode’s pacing. but like. damn. its MY writeup and i can give us a moment of silence for X as i choose.
...
okay, jump to a month later, at the UN building in NYC. we see someone open a door to the special representative to the secretary general- OMG... the SRSG!!! and mulder is there to visit!! he must have pieced together the horrific clue… the special representative won’t see him. but his secretary, marita covarrubias, will.
he’s trying to get answers on the farmland in canada, but only getting dead ends. however, maria says the farm was abandoned, but the crops were identified as ginseng.
GINSENG? making killer bees? press F to doubt. and she says there no evidence of bees. YEAH RIGHT,,, I SAW THEM!
she asks why this is so important to him, and he starts to say that he’s suffered some very personal losses recently, but he can’t seem to get it out (oh my gosh, it is so sad) but he opens the file she hands him and sees A PHOTO of the CLONES OF HIS SISTER doing farm work!!!
and this assistant says “not everything dies, mr. mulder” (which at this point i had to rewind and get her name because i realized she might KNOW THINGS and be a RECURRING character with INFORMATION…. OMG….)
SO WHAT DO WE DO WITH ALL OF THAT?!?!?
back to the hospital, where THE BOUNTY HUNTER is visiting????? is he gonna hurt mrs. mulder OMFG???? stay away from her?!!!!!
but he goes in there and looks at her. “i need to know the reasons why this should be”, he asks CANCER MAN??? who seems to have SET UP OFFICE IN THERE??? he says it’s so that the project may continue, and this will remove an obstacle. and that obstacle is AGENT MULDER???
HELLO??? so DID cancer man do this to her??? “if his mother were to die….” NO NO, KEEP ON TALKING CANCER MAN, SHARE WITH THE CLASS WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY
“the fiercest enemy is the man who has nothing left to lose, and you know how important agent mulder is to the equation” <- SO THIS WHOLE COLONIZATION PLAN WAS DRAFTED WITH HIM IN MIND???? how would that even be possible... how far back does this plan even go?
bounty hunter closes the door and locks it behind him, then proceeds to lay his hand on mrs. mulder- so ALL of these aliens can do the healing thingy? and she opens her eyes!!!! and sees cancer man!!
imagine that being the first thing you see when you wake up omg….
and thus concludes the episode.
okay, so i have a lot to say, but yesterday i saw a video that said “think of the character you hate the most in the world” and i thought of cancer man. then the video said “now imagine all your negative self thoughts in that character’s voice and you won’t listen to them ever again” and damn, if cancer man TRIED me i would find new and exciting ways to cause him suffering. in ways that i shan’t describe, for i haven’t even thought of them yet. i imagine an entirely empty room with nothing but that one “i’m good and i’m feeling alright” song on loop for years, with his ears in protective gear that make them impossible to self-deafen when he’s lost it.
BUT. we got a lot in this episode. and i’m not sure how i’m feeling.
well, first, we lost X. this is a major L for our heroes. even though he could be a bit insufferable in his vague hints, he seemed to have some sort of positive feeling toward mulder, at least part of the time. but how much of what he was doing was furthering cancer man’s agenda? it might be impossible to ever tell.
second, jeremy. he was a great dude in episode 1, saving all those lives, and then it turns out he knew about the clone children slavery which makes me think much less of him and i find it hard to mourn his death. because seriously WTF kind of evil creature uses cloned kidnapped kids to harvest evil killer bees. and no parents because they are “unnecessary”. and poor mulder was tortured by seeing her again but it not actually being Her. and despite it not actually being Her, he wanted to save this clone samantha, who had been deprived of any language. what the hell. jeremy is supposed to be RESISTING to the alien’s plan for colonization but he knew about this so like???? which side is he on?????
i mean, i guess knowing about atrocities committed by your people doesn’t mean you endorse them, but he was SO condescending about the whole matter, all “oh you don’t understand” in a way that makes me think he WAS endorsing it. so if he’s down with their evil plans, why the hell is he resisting them bad enough to be hunted by this bounty hunter for???
i am puzzled on that front, but it feels that it was designed to be this way. either way, jeremy is dead now too, so no answers on that front, either.
so, we know that there is this plan at colonization of earth by this alien species, and that jeremy claimed mulder had some way of stopping it. and the colonization plan involves evil bees and pollen and cloned children and inventorying every person who ever received a smallpox vaccine. and also kidnapping people and performing tests on them that will slowly kill them. and this is a plan set in place by a certain group at the UN to which cancer man belongs, but somehow this plan stretches back to mr. mulder, and was drafted with the younger mulder in mind. and we also know that they took samantha as "insurance" so that mr. mulder didn't betray the plan, because he was not in agreement with the ethics involved.
other things that we know but are not clear how exactly they fit in: the whole oil alien that turns people into flashbangs found in the sunken submarine deal, krychek's escape arc, exactly who the little grey dudes that look like stereotypical aliens are, and if the bodies found in the train car back in anasazi were actual aliens, or alien-human hybrids- because they had smallpox vaccine scars. also, we still do not know to whom X pledged his loyalty, and the exact purpose of the disease center in west virginia where that one dude claimed the government was testing on vulnerable populations.
so somehow we have some known aliens in here, people being catalogued and experimented upon, possibly in an attempt to create alien-human hybrids to accelerate the plan of alien colonization. but also some mystery aliens of uncertain relevance to the plot.
okay, i think... i have it all in order.
there was a lot that went down here, so i will need some time to process it all. but, we did get more scully, which is ALWAYS a good thing, especially when she is cracking codes and being a scientist. and poor mulder... they are just torturing him for fun at this point...
there was a lot of plot, but not a ton of time to process it. so this episode was good, but i don’t think it would make my top 10 ranking. this is also a consequence of our agents being separated for most of the ep.
so, where do we go from here? i have no idea! i am just glad to begin a new journey with these characters, even if things are still very murky in terms of plot! in fact, there was so much plot crammed into a short space of time, i'm almost looking forward to a few monster of the week episodes to try and give my brain a break from unraveling all that.
now... i know that the next episode has a reputation for being quite spooky. and i shall face this challenge with bravery and honor. wish me luck…

Note
what is YOUR favourite dt episode?
A few people have asked me for my favorite episodes, so I thought I’d wait until the end of the tournament to give some of mine!!! Using this ask as an excuse to give my top five!
In the end most of these boil down to favorite character bias, but DuckTales has some amazing characters so can you blame me-
#1 Favorite, Astro B.O.Y.D.!
Yes yeah favorite character bias of course I love Gyro and team Science but also! There is so much more to love outside of them!
First off Gyro's character development?? He was a long established favorite of mine before that and it was so wonderful to not only get his backstory but his development too all in one episode. The way they give us so much about him in just a little dialogue and how much you can read into it- "I swore I would never go back" "Spent my whole life trying to live that down" *immediately goes back and faces it* really shows how huge it was for him to see Boyd again. Just having him there made him so scared of a repeat that he went back to face it with barely a moment's hesitation.
And Boyd oh my god he is the most precious child ever. He's wildly misunderstood! Baby boy! I really want to know how much of his memory he still has in the beginning, because he didn't know anything about what happened but he was still able to recognize Gyro I'm gonna cry. His and Huey's interactions are adorable and amazing, I don't relate much to the autism rep but I sure do fucking appreciate it. Every now and then I think too much about the "just wired a little differently" line and have to sit down for a minute. "That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me" BABIES. DO YOU UNDERSTAND.
Another thing I really appreciate about this episode is Fenton! I was thinking about it recently and I think this is the most of Fenton's personality we get to see. Every other episode centered around him he's having to deal with Mark Beaks or Waddleduck (Mark Beaks) or the date fiasco (Mark Beaks) or fighting an evil robot car (Mark Beaks) or being hacked (Mark Beaks) and so it's fun to just kind of see him Hanging Out in this episode. The way he just whisks Huey and Boyd off in the middle of the night makes me think he's like the fun older relative who drives you to the gas station after dark to get movie snacks. And I will never get over his "2-BOOOOOOO" anime scream.
People in the notes during the tournament complaining The Hug is overhyped no you don't understand. It is not appreciated enough. 1. All Boyd wanted the whole episode was a hug and to get that from the person who he used to care for the most? Who used to care for him the most? I'm not okay. 2. Gyro gets up there and acknowledges what Boyd has been saying this whole time, and it touches Boyd so much that he not only snaps out of evil mind control but his first instinct is just to hug him? 3. Gyro finally sees Boyd and understands what happened and the first thing he does is grab him out of the air and hug him? Gyro is clearly not a very huggy person but he doesn't hesitate there. That hug to me always means "I see you and I'm sorry" god I'm gonna cry.
There is so much more to say about this episode like the animation and Tezuka and Akita (so mad we never saw him in F.O.W.L.) but uhhh I've rambled enough so
#2 Favorite, From the Confidential Case Files of Agent 22!
Again! Favorite character bias, I love crazy evil women. Black Heron you are everything to me I'm so sorry you were so sidelined you deserved another episode. Also what the hell was going on with her and Beakley in the 60s "I've grown very well acquainted with your agent 22" ma'am what do you mean by that. What were you two Doing. Nothing else happens in this episode right-
Kidding! When I say that the S3 finale came out of nowhere I mean the triplets reveal went too fast for me, not the buildup of Webby and Scrooge being close. We had a random-ass episode in the middle of S1 already confirming them as best friends, and it is so adorable to see them bond. Scrooge let her yell a battle cry even though it would likely trigger the robots I love them. He lets her take the final fight against Heron because he knows she can do it I love them.
#3 Favorite, The Outlaw Scrooge McDuck!
"You just like this one because Gyro and Fenton are in it" you're catching on. I'm sorry I did say this is all favorite character bias. I love Marshall and Gyro just pops in for absolutely no reason other than that they needed the Time Tub to be established and they needed an excuse to get tech into the 1800s. He could've been literally any other character they could've made a new one Gyro literally doesn't matter there but he is there just Hanging Out and I love that for him.
I'm not the biggest Scroldie fan but they are fun. My favorite part is when Goldie hits him in the face with a gold pan and leaves him in a water trough. I love seeing more of Goldie here too, "oh I ran out of people to pit against each other" Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss it's so fun to see her actively manipulating her way out of a situation. Also I fucking love her dress and I yell her "KEY CHANGE" whenever I get a chance to.
#4 Favorite, The First Adventure!
"You just like this one because Black Heron is in it" correct. What did I say. She gets to do whatever the fuck she wants in this episode and I love her for that. "Forgot I set that one" she is everything to me.
I can't not appreciate little Donald and Della though, and we get to see The Note! "Eat the rich uncle" you know they only got away with that because no one can understand Donald. Speaking of which- I was so sad knowing it wasn't going to be Russi Taylor voicing him but I think whoever stepped in did a fantastic job, the only reason I can tell it's someone else is because I was paying so close attention to his voice. I love how Scrooge just hands the controls of a plane to a 10 year old talk about living on the edge. There are too many silly little hijinks with these three to go through but I love all of them they go so well together as characters. They all play off of each other amazingly and I feel like you get that the best in this episode. Also "am I donna or dello" should I make a poll for that.
#5 Favorite, Timephoon!
How does an episode completely change a fandom. Della Duck get behind me. I wasn't even in the fandom when this dropped but if I'm still seeing aftershocks of the chaos years after then I know it was bad. Thing is Della isn't even the thing I often focus on when watching this but I Will talk about it because nobody has any chill. Seriously kudos to her for winning the tournament she deserves it after all of this. I adore her interactions with Beakley in this episode "duuuude why would you step on a butterfly?!" that is not the point and she knows it she just does whatever she can to get out of being responsible. Mood.
The kids are really the focus here! I know Louie's story has more impact on the plot but I really like whatever was happening with Bubba and Huey and Webby. Pure shenanigans trying to reference an older character but god was it funny.
Also I really love everyones outfits at the end, Knight Della and Aaron Burr and/or Mr. Darcy 1800s Gyro especially. I really was expecting what LP said about the future to come up again in the finale, and I don't know if it's good or bad that it didn't because on the one hand that would be an amazing reference and on the other it's just more evidence of LP being silly and saying random shit.
(Honorable favorite mentions, The 87¢ Solution, The Great Dime Chase, Most Dangerous Game Night, Nightmare on Killmotor Hill, and Missing Links of Moorshire)
Anyway! I'm so happy you all are interested in my favorites and it's very fun to get to talk about them, so thank you for the excuse! Sorry they all boiled down to "I just really like this character and they're in this episode" but again that just means DuckTales creates some really fantastic characters. Main reveal I'm @wacky-nameless-inventor-24 come say Hi if you want to! I should do a poll soon of what tournament we should do next!

Masterlist for S1
<Previous Chapter
Genre: Friends (idiots) to Lovers (we're in the lovers stage now)
Chapter Warnings: Canon-typical violence, swearing, MAJOR CHARACTER 'DEATH', HEAVY ANGST, my interpretation of thought processes, relatively detailed injury and torture descriptions, vomiting, slight hurt/comfort, brief kissing, Hemlock being a creep and just generally himself, I project my feelings again and reader makes a questionable choice but it needed to happen, no happy endings here
Word Count: 8.8K
Author's notes: If I have done my job right in any capacity, this'll be a rough one to get through. However, I promise I have a oneshot planned that'll fix some of what just happened and if S3 doesn't fix the rest, I will do it then!
Tumblr media
You helped Hunter with opening the car doors and as you all saw the awful freefall that lay below you, you knew it was going to take a lot to get out of this situation in one piece.
“This… is not ideal.” Tech commented.
“At least we’re not hanging under the car.” Wrecker offered.
“This isn’t much better.” You said before you ducked as a round of blaster fire headed in your direction.
“Echo, get this car moving.” Hunter instructed as the rest of you fired back.
“The explosions must’ve knocked out the power to the rail line.” Echo theorised irritably.
You moved away from the edge of the doors back to the middle of the car. “What if I just take down their railcar? It wouldn’t take long.” You suggested.
Tech shook his head. “I do not think that would be wise. There would be no guarantee that the resulting impact of you destroying that line would not affect the terminal that we need to get moving. And we’d still be stuck here whilst the Empire can easily send more reinforcements and-”
“Okay, fine do it your way.” You interrupted as you went back to focusing your fire on the Imperials.
“I can try to reboot the system, but I will need to plug directly into one of the terminals on the track.” Tech said.
Hunter addressed the rest of you, “You four, give us cover, Tech up top with me.”
--
Tech and Hunter moved to the next level of the railcar and Hunter gave his brother a boost up to the roof so he could climb onto the track.
As Tech got underway, Hunter opened the other set of doors and opened fire, particularly on any soldiers that were aiming for Tech.
--
“I am plugged in. Stand by.” Tech said into his comm as he got to work.
--
You all were doing a decent enough job at holding them back. They had more numbers, but your squad was more skilled, so you were managing okay.
That feeling of things being under control did not last long as Hunter heard the familiar sounds of ships coming your way. “We’ve got three ships inbound.”
You muttered a series of expletives as you scanned the sky around you for them.
“Where? I can’t see them.” Omega asked fearfully.
“Tech, we need power!” You urged into you comm as you could hear them drawing closer with each passing second.
You all took up positions to open fire on them, but it did very little. The ships got a round of shots away and you had to fight to stay balanced as the car shook with the impact.
Tech stared at his datapad and finally the screen turned green. He tapped his comm, “Echo, now!”
Upon Tech’s word, Echo plugged back in, and the railcar finally came back online.
“Tech, get your ass back here.” You hurried as you saw the ships getting ready to make another pass.
Tech unplugged and got himself across to the main track and started running but he could hear the ships getting nearer.
Hunter concentrated his fire on the oncoming ships. He was able to clip one in the wing and it collided into another which he thought would be enough.
It wasn’t.
The third ship came speeding through and fired a series off shots that found their mark. You all stumbled inside the car as it violently shook and struggled against the onslaught of blaster fire.
The explosion flung Tech backwards, and he fell from the track onto the roof of the bottom half of the car. He tried to stand but the resulting shot had seen to it that the back of the railcar was tearing itself away from the track and as it titled backwards, he went with it. He managed to hook his grappling cable onto one of the grates, but he was stuck hanging over the abyss.
--
“Come on, Tech! Hurry!” Wrecker implored as he peered down the broken end of the railcar.
“I am climbing as fast as I can.” Tech replied with a grunt as he started to make his way up the cable, but the additional weight and well-placed rogue enemy blaster fire exacerbated the fragile state of the car and it lurched backwards, sending him further down the cable once more.
“Tech!” Omega cried as she saw him fall whilst Wrecker debated the best way to get down the sloped hallway.
“Why aren’t we moving?” Hunter asked Echo as he took refuge from the blaster fire.
“The car’s being ripped from the track.” Another harsh vibration sounded shook through it as he tried to get it moving.
“Wrecker, get him on board.” Hunter pressed, desperation seeping into his voice, before he opened fire on the soldiers again.
Wrecker made to step down, but the car dipped significantly.
“Don’t!” Tech yelled as he fell down even further. “Any shift in weight could send both of these cars over.”
You glanced behind you at Wrecker and Omega and made the call that the others could hold the troopers off. You needed to help Tech now. Channelling the Force, you focused on the point where the two hinges met but it was already fragile, and it would take a lot of energy and focus to keep them together since they were wanting to do anything but and the circumstances were hardly ideal to have that focus but you had to make it work. You could hear more ships coming but you ignored them, you didn’t care.
“You must sever the connection hinge. Now!” Tech instructed.
“Not until you’re up here.” Wrecker argued.
“Tech, I can hold them, just climb or let Wrecker-”
“You can’t keep them steady and wait for me to get up there with the time we have left.” Tech interrupted you as he saw the ships in the distance closing in again.
“She’s got it, Tech.” Wrecker said, doing his best to keep the distress out of his voice as he edged his way forward. As he did so, the cart swayed forward, and he glanced back at you.
“Go.” You said through gritted teeth as you focused on keeping both carts level, but each moment of blaster fire and Wrecker’s added weight were making it harder.
Tech fell a few more metres as the cart continued to pull itself away from the track. He looked around and he knew what he had to do. He needed you all to get away. He wasn’t wrong about this. You all would make it out. He just needed to take himself out of the equation. “There is no time.” He pulled out his blaster. “Plan 99.”
Your heart plummeted. Not that plan, any plan but that one.
Wrecker’s heart filled with dread.
Omega felt nothing but panic.
“Tech, please-” You broke off as you channelled more of your energy into keeping both carts stable, but another round of shots meant the car swung again. Your knees buckled and your hold faltered slightly.
“Don’t you do it, Tech.” Wrecker ordered as he tried to creep forward once more but the cart continued to protest against the strain.
Tech sighed before he accepted his next course of action. It was, in a way, a rather easy decision. Omega had once asked him if they were a family. His answer had been yes, and it was true. He just didn’t think he’d really said it enough, but he loved his family. And what do families do? They protect each other… and that’s exactly what he was going to do. “When have we ever followed orders?” With that, he fired a shot through the glass of the railcar that met its mark, and the connection hinge was severed.
Even if you could hold it, you were out of time. The ships would make their pass at any second and you couldn’t prevent your section of the railcar reconnecting or else none of you would make it out of this.
And you hated it. You fucking hated it, but you were left with no choice; you dropped your hands, released your hold and watched in agony as Tech fell.
“No!” Wrecker cried out as he helplessly watched his brother fade from view and there was nothing he could do nothing to stop it.
“Tech!” Omega yelled.
The railcar reconnected to the track and sped away from the troopers on the opposite side.
Hunter grabbed Omega’s wrist as she moved closer to the open end of the car. “Omega-”
“Go back! Go back!” She said desperately, reaching out as if she could still grab him.
You felt numb. You couldn’t move. Every other noise around you sounded fuzzy. The skulking darkness that had been circling you since Saw Gerrera showed up was asking for a way in. It took every fibre of control to not let it. Hunter’s voice dragged you back to the current moment.
“The car’s going too fast.” Hunter said urgently.
“The system’s fried. I can’t stop it.” Echo replied, desperately trying to plug back in to do something to stop the rapid descent as the back wall of the station grew dangerously close.
You knew your help wouldn’t be fast enough either, and you felt Hunter’s internal conflict as his helmeted gaze darted between you and Omega. It’s Omega first, every time.
Hunter lunged for her just as the cart collided and smashed through the wall of the terminal.
--
Everything was grey, and dull and bleak.
If it wasn’t for the bitter scent of smoke in the air, she wouldn’t have been sure that she’d even opened her eyes at first.
Debris from the wreckage surrounded her.
And she ached. Her entire body burned with the pain it took to stand.
Tech. She needed to find Tech. He couldn’t be far. She called his name but only managed a few paces before she collapsed once more.
She tried to fight it, but it hurt too much, and the encroaching darkness was too tempting.
As the pain overwhelmed her, she didn’t have the strength to turn it away.
--
You groaned as you came to and immediately felt woozy as you attempted to sit up. Your hood had already come loose from the collision, but you pushed your mask down to catch your breath and breathe through the soreness radiating through your body.
You brushed the dirt off your face but felt something wet leaving a trail down your cheek. You took off your glove and touched it to find your fingertips covered in blood. You carefully followed the path of blood to the source and winced as you touched the oozing deep cut by your temple. Fighting the dizziness, you looked around to see the others pushing themselves up but then your eyes caught sight of an unmoving figure and your blood ran cold.
You forced yourself to stand, ignoring the shooting pain that coursed through your ankle, and staggered over to Omega. You dropped to your knees next to her and felt for a pulse, which thankfully you found but it was weak. “Omega, come on honey, open your eyes for me.” You begged her as her body shivered beneath your touch. You felt the others come by your side. You hung your head in relief when you saw her eyes flicker open, but she couldn’t stay awake, and you knew she was in bad shape.
“We have to get her out of here.” Hunter said, doing his best to not let the panic he felt upon seeing her like this come through.
Wrecker picked her up. “I got you, kid.”
“Incoming! Get to the Marauder!” Echo shouted as Imperial reinforcements arrived.
You picked up Omega’s bow and provided Wrecker and Omega cover fire as you all retreated back to your ship.
--
“Head to Ord Mantell. AZ can help her. Hurry!” Hunter instructed Echo as he made his way to the cockpit.
You watched Wrecker gently place her down on your bunk whilst Echo got the ship in the air and into hyperspace.
“You’re bleeding.” Hunter stated, worry etched in his voice as he brushed some of your hair back and caught sight of the mix of fresh and dried blood on your skin.
“I’m fine.” You said groggily as the fading adrenaline meant you had to work harder to fight against the light-headedness you were experiencing. You then noticed the awkward way he clutched his forearm and at the fact standing up straight appeared to cause him some issues. “Are you okay?”
Hunter didn’t answer directly. “Are any of us?”
You glanced around you and felt the anguish in everybody that you knew also resided in your own heart. “No, no we’re not.”
You focused on watching Omega’s chest rise and fall as a way to keep you grounded and willed the journey to go quickly.
--
“Cid, AZ, we need your help!” You shouted as you limped into the parlour.
Cid took in all of your various injured states and nodded, too taken aback to offer anything else.
AZ dropped the cleaning supplies he was using and flew over to Wrecker. “Follow me.” He led the way to Cid’s room.
“It is best if you leave, and I can work on her without distraction.” AZ instructed.
Neither of them really wanted to, but they didn’t want their presence to be a problem, so they did as he said.
“Where’s Goggles?” Cid asked as Hunter and Wrecker came back into the main parlour.
And it was that question that snapped you all out of what ever fatigued state of denial you were in.
You half collapsed into one of the booths and blinked back the angry, grief-stricken tears that threatened to escape.
Wrecker released a shaky breath and just shook his head as he sat down on one of the bar stools.
And Echo- now that he knew Omega was getting the medical attention she needed- just left the room. For the first time in his life, he needed the solitude.
“We- we lost him.” Hunter just about managed to say as the loss overwhelmed him and he sat down next to you. He welcomed the loving hold you took of his hand as you rested it in your lap and rubbed circles on the back of it and was grateful for tender way you pulled his head to rest on your shoulder. He ignored the slight discomfort the position caused him.
“I’ll give you guys some time alone.” Cid said quietly as she made her way towards the exit.
You all were in too much pain and too emotionally exhausted to notice the comm she took with her.
--
You’d lost track of how long you’d all spent waiting for AZ to come back with news so when he finally entered the room, the room was ripe with nervous tension. She had to be okay. She just had to be.
“AZ?” You said uneasily.
“Omega’s injuries were severe, but I have stabilised her and she should recover. It is just a matter of time of waiting for her to wake up.”
You all let out a collective breath of relief.
“Thank you.” Hunter said gratefully.
AZ nodded. “Now, what injuries of yours can I assist with?”
“(Y/N) has an actively bleeding head injury and a wounded ankle and Wrecker’s neck is causing him problems. Leave me for last.” Hunter said.
You knew disputing the order wouldn’t be helpful to anyone right now, so you let AZ come over to you first.
--
After you all were taken care of, AZ went back to monitor Omega and give you guys some space.
“What are we going to do now?” Wrecker asked as AZ left.
Hunter sighed deeply. “We have nothing to go on. No location, no leads. Nothing. And with Tech-” He broke off with a cough before continuing, “With Tech gone and Omega being hurt like that…” He paused for a moment as he considered his next words, “I can’t put her through something like this again. I can’t put any of you through it again. We’re done. We’ll find somewhere to settle.”
“What about Pabu?” Wrecker offered quietly. “She likes it, and we were going to settle there anyway… right?”
Hunter looked to you and you nodded. “He gave us another chance. We should take it any way we can.” You said, clearing your throat as the pain of the loss threatened to overcome you.
“Alright.” Hunter said before he got to his feet. “I’m going to go wait until Omega wakes up.” He left the room.
“Wrecker, will you be okay for a moment?” You asked as you also stood.
Wrecker understood. “Go.”
You bowed your head in thanks and followed Hunter.
--
You paused by the doorway and studied the way he sat in the chair as he watched over Omega. His posture was tense, and his leg bounced anxiously. You knew he was barely keeping it together, but he was making himself because he was still the leader and had to be. But you wanted to give him a chance to let himself drop the appearance, if only for a moment.
“You don’t have to be strong right now. Not in front of me.” You walked around to the front of the seat and kneeled in front of him. You placed your hand on his cheek to turn his face towards you as he was keeping his eyes firmly on Omega. At your words, it looked like a weight just left his body and he let his head and shoulders hang lowly.
“That plan was never supposed to be used.” He uttered, his throat bobbing as the mask of composure started to drop.
Your heart ached as you felt the guilt and sorrow within him. You reached up and placed your arms around his neck and just held him close to you. I’m so sorry.
“I only got two of them.” Hunter mumbled into the crook of your neck as he met your embrace.
“Hmm?”
“The ships. There were three and I only got two of them. If I had just made sure, he wouldn’t have fallen from the track. The third got the shot away that killed him.”
You pulled away as you picked up on the way the typical rasp in his voice got lower and more uneven. You cupped his face in your hands and rubbed away the stray tears. “Hunter, you can’t do that to yourself.”
“I was supposed to look after us. By taking that mission, I put everyone in danger and look what happened.”
“You went because you knew it was the right thing to do. It gave us a last chance to get Crosshair back. What happened-” You took a second to draw a calming breath of your own. “What happened was cruel and unfair, but it wasn’t your fault. I know that guilt may never truly fade, I’ve been there, but you still have the rest of us. You still have me. Whenever you need a reminder that this was not your doing, I will be there, I promise.”
Hunter couldn’t help but search for any doubt or lies in your eyes and voice but found none. He pressed his lips into your palm and the sincerity and love in your tone served to remind him that he could do this. “We’ve lost two brothers.”
You brought your forehead to press against his and whispered understandingly, “I know.”
“I can’t lose anyone else.” He breathed against your lips, but he could feel himself starting to regain the composure he knew he was going to need for what was to come.
You placed a delicate kiss to his mouth. “You won’t.” You caressed your thumb along his cheek before you stood behind him with your hands on his shoulders as you both waited for Omega to come back around.
--
“Hunter? (Y/N)?” Omega winced with a groan as her eyes opened once more and saw you both standing by her bedside, the worry on your faces now becoming relief.
“Hiya, kid.” Hunter said warmly as he brushed some of her hair back and reached for her hand.
She let Hunter support her back as she tried to sit up and took in the various bandages that graced both of you and her own fading pain prompted the reminder that the mission had gone very wrong. “What happened?”
Before either of you could reply, AZ whirred into the room and Hunter delicately laid her back down.
“Hello, Omega. I am relieved you are awake.” He scanned her. “You each sustained multiple injuries. However, you all will make a full recovery with proper treatment and rest.”
His reassurance helped calm the anxiety you were feeling over her injuries. You tenderly hugged her as Hunter assisted in getting her upright.
“You’re- You’re okay.” Wrecker said with relief as he came into the room. He crouched in front of her. “Don’t scare us like that again.” He put an arm around her in a fond embrace.
You passed her some water. “How do you feel?”
Omega took it from you but didn’t drink it. “I don’t know. The last thing I remember, we were in the railcar when…” She released a horrified gasp as the images came flooding back. “Where’s Tech?”
“Omega, Tech didn’t make it.” Hunter said, his voiced laced with sadness at having to tell her this again. Part of him had hoped she’d remember so she wouldn’t have to go re-experience the hurt of the loss.
“We have to go back! What if he’s hurt? He- He need us. Tell him, Wrecker. We can’t just leave him!” But Wrecker only looked back at her with nothing but sorrow on his face.
“Omega…” Your voice cracked slightly as you attempted to rest a comforting hand on her shoulder.
Omega hit your hand away. “No! Tech’s not gone! He- He can’t be!” Tears fell down her face.
Her reaction nearly broke you all over again.
“I- I know, kid.” Hunter said quietly as he moved to sit beside her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
Reliving it all got too much for Wrecker. He wiped his eyes and backed out of the room.
You glanced over your shoulder as Wrecker left and you knew Hunter needed to talk to Omega about what the rest of you had discussed. “I’ll give you two a minute.” You said, your voice still thick with emotion.
--
“Why did Tech do that?” Omega said tearfully after you and Wrecker had left. She wiped her eyes. “He didn’t let us save him.”
“He knew we were out of time.” Hunter explained as simply as he could. “Tech put the squad ahead of himself. He made a sacrifice, Omega, and we’re not gonna waste it.”
“What does that mean?”
“The galaxy has changed, and so have we. It’s time to put being soldiers behind us for good. The three of us think Pabu could be a good place to make a new life for ourselves. And the rest of it, well, we can figure out along the way. Omega, is that something you want?”
She thought it through for a moment before she nodded.
“Then that’s what we’ll do.” Hunter said. This would work. You all could heal together and make it out okay. It would get better.
--
You pulled yourself onto the bar stool next to the one Wrecker was sitting on. “What can I do?” You asked caringly. You knew there was nothing you could say that would immediately ease the pain of grief, but if there was anything you could do to help, you would.
“Just being here is fine.” Wrecker mumbled roughly as he kept his emotions at bay.
You rested your hand on top of his- an act he gently mirrored with his own before he removed his hand. You know I love you, right? It was a sentiment you realised you had not shared enough with the others and you didn’t want that to continue anymore.
Wrecker breathed deeply. “I love you too… and it’s not just because you’re with Hunter. You became a part of this family long before that.”
The genuine and heartfelt way he said that touched you deeply. You swallowed the lump that formed in your throat. “It’s a pretty good family to have.”
“Tech would’ve been able to tell you the exact date, I’m sure he kept a record of it.” Wrecker said with a sad chuckle.
You managed a half smile at his words. “That would be in character for him.”
A natural quiet descended on the two of you.
“Did we miss something? Did we miss a way to save him?” Wrecker asked into the silence.
The question was one you had been torturing yourself with ever since the ship had left Eriadu. “What we needed was time, and- and Tech knew we were out of it by that point.”
“Yeah.” Wrecker released a dejected sigh. “He always was the smart one.”
--
“Here. These are on the house.” Cid gifted you both a drink.
“It won’t help.” Wrecker said as he nudged it out the way.
You did the same.
“I’m sorry about Goggles. I always liked him.” Cid said sympathetically.
“Yeah. Us too.” Wrecker said with a crestfallen sigh.
Despite her words, you, and Wrecker both noticed the way she kept avoiding eye contact with both of you.
“What’s with you?” Wrecker asked.
Cid gulped, “You know, I tried to look out for you guys. But you got too much heat on you. And you brought it here to my place of business. I had to make the best of a bad situation.”
You picked up on her awkwardness and agitation. “Cid, what did you do?” You asked as a hollow pit of dread sat heavy in your stomach.
“I’m sorry.” That was all she said before she looked to the door.
You and Wrecker followed her stare, and a squadron of Imperial troopers came marching through the door with their blasters drawn.
You both instinctively reached for your blasters, but both of yours had been lost in the crash.
Wrecker was unaffected by the first stun blast that contacted him, and he charged at the group, but his neck brace severely limited his mobility.
You dodged the stun shot that was sent your way and realised keeping up a pretence would be pointless now. You threw your vibroblade into the shoulder of the closest threat to you before you Force-pushed multiple troopers against the back wall and used your ally to snap the wrists of others that aimed for you.
“Stop!”
You turned in the direction of the voice to see Wrecker half-conscious, kneeling on the floor with his wrists bound and a trooper holding a blaster to his head whilst the squad regrouped and pointed their weapons at you.
Your jaw tightened but you did as he ordered and let them take you. A kick to the backs of your knees brought you down. They took your comm off you and, judging by the way the cuffs he put on you were slightly different to Wrecker’s, they’d come prepared. You weren’t going to have an easy way out.
“She was right, Sir. This is the Jedi.” One of the troopers that was holding you down by the top of your shoulder said to Doctor Hemlock as he came through the crowd to stand at the front.
You glanced up at the man you now recognised as Doctor Hemlock who was staring down at you.
“Wonderful.”
--
He’d acted quickly when he knew the Empire was here and he’d kept Omega safe. That’s what mattered first. She was in the mining tunnels and on her way to Echo. The Empire wouldn’t find her. He could now focus on getting you and Wrecker back.
Hunter rounded the corner to the main parlour with his blaster drawn but his heart stopped at the sight. Both you and Wrecker were cuffed and being held at gunpoint by Imperials and Hemlock was right in the middle. He advanced forward a few paces, but the troopers focused their blasters on him.
“That’s not very strategic, Hunter.” Hemlock cautioned. “You don’t need to use your enhanced senses to know you’re outnumbered.” He turned his attention to the owner of the parlour. “The Empire thanks you for your assistance. Our business is done. Leave.”
“You piece of shit.” You hissed as you fought against the grip the troopers had on you as you watched her take the case of credits and walk out the door.
“Please consider your next move very carefully. I would hate for this to end poorly for all of you.” Hemlock advised. He paused and studied your handiwork on the wounded that were now being evacuated from the building. “Such an exquisite creature.” He brushed the fingers of his ungloved hand across your cheek. “You chose well.” He complimented the Sergeant.
You recoiled from his touch.
“Don’t fucking touch her.” Hunter snarled.
Hemlock ignored the clone for now and kept his attention on you. He lifted your cuffs by the middle. “How can someone so powerful be limited so easily?” He dropped your wrists. “Please. Do me the honour of just trying to use it.”
You stared him down in refusal.
“Or both of them will be killed.” Hemlock said simply.
You gritted your teeth and hoped the message behind your eyes as you looked to Hunter was clear- he had to keep it together.
Hunter didn’t understand what was about to happen. You were telling him to stay calm and remain where he was, but he didn’t fully know why. What was Hemlock talking about?
You braced yourself as you did as Hemlock said. You were met with the expected electric current that shot through your system. You didn’t cry out despite the pain; you didn’t want to give him the satisfaction, but you couldn’t help but fall forward on all fours. You had to take a few deep breaths before kneeling upright once more. The binds themselves had also grown tighter.
“Incredible.” Hemlock mused. “Years spent studying your people and the Force and we have barely scratched the surface of understanding you, yet science still finds ways to prove itself. Go again.”
“No!” Hunter protested. Watching you do that once was bad enough and you were hiding it well, but he knew you were in pain, and he couldn’t let it continue. Instinct took over and he moved a half step closer to you, but the line of blasters stopped him from advancing.
“How touching.” Hemlock mocked, internally thrilled that the reaction from both of you had been as he predicted. It made the process far more enjoyable. “But if you value your fellow clone’s life, you will not stop this.”
“I can- I can handle it.” You said breathlessly as a way reassure Hunter and stop him from doing anything reckless- you knew this torture was as much for him as it was for you, and you needed him alive. But you couldn’t prevent the pained grunt that left your mouth this time and you fell forward once more, and the cuffs pinched the skin of your wrists.
“Again.” Hemlock ordered you.
“Don’t.” Hunter pleaded, but he wasn’t talking to Hemlock, he was looking at you. This wasn’t something you should have to handle. There had to be another way. He should be the one to take that pain.
Whatever it required to keep them both alive. “It’s okay.” You said, your voice hoarse. You did it again and an audible cry fell from your lips.
Hemlock waited until you sat up. “Again.” He demanded.
You inhaled with a wince and did as he said.
The cycle continued until Hemlock said otherwise.
--
Hunter wanted to stop it. Despite your words, his resolve was weakening by the second. The only thing stopping him from doing something was that Wrecker’s life was also involved here but he couldn’t stand that all he could do was watch you go through this torment over and over again.
Wrecker struggled against his captors as he watched, but they were too many securing him.
“Stop.” Hunter finally growled at Hemlock after this last round saw to it that you were barely able to right yourself. He saw your arms give out from beneath you with the effort it took to remove yourself from the ground. And from the way you were trying to flex them, he guessed you were losing feeling in your fingers.
Hemlock smirked, “I am merely giving her a preview of what’s to come. I need to know what it’ll take to crush someone like her.”
He kneeled beside your crumpled body and spoke into your ear. “I will look forward to breaking you.” He kept eye-contact Hunter.
Hunter was clenching his jaw so hard that his teeth hurt. The thought sickened him.
You believed him. That quiet, menacing tone in his voice told you he truly meant what he was saying and… and that brought out a level of fear you’d never felt before. But you wouldn’t let that happen yet. Your arms trembled as you braced your palms against the floor and you panted through the throbbing discomfort in your body, but you managed to get back to a kneeling position. In a way, you were also grateful for the harsh but secure hold the troopers resumed since it meant you weren’t required to keep yourself stable.
“Such resolve.” Hemlock whispered to you. “And now onto the other matter at hand.” He said breezily as he stood upright once more and addressed Hunter. “Here’s how this is going to go. You will lower your blaster and hand over Omega. And I will allow you to keep breathing.”
“Omega’s not going anywhere with you.”
The fierce protectiveness of the clone brought out a soft snicker from Hemlock. “Oh. Well, who knew clones are so paternal? Fascinating.”
To hear that observation come from that man had bile rising in your throat.
“I was saddened to learn of your friend’s demise. What was his name? Oh, yes. Tech.” Hemlock taunted cruelly.
“Don’t fucking say his name.” You spat as you strained against your captors. An act Wrecker joined you on.
Hemlock merely reached his hand out to one of the soldiers and took the object. “I’m afraid this was all I could salvage. Consider it a gift.” He tossed the broken goggles across the room to Hunter’s feet.
Your strength was returning and at Hemlock’s actions, you attempted to lunge for him, but the troopers acted quickly and, with a strong grip on your shoulders, they forced you back to your knees.
Hemlock was unphased and stepped forward a few paces. “To lose one of your own, it must weigh heavily on you as their leader.” He signalled back to his men who pressed their blasters against the back of yours and Wreckers heads. “And if you don’t lower the blaster now, you will lose more.”
Hunter looked past Hemlock and you and Wrecker.
Wrecker did the best he could do to shake his head.
“Hunter, n-” The sharp tap of a blaster interrupted you.
He wasn’t losing any anyone else. And with Omega gone, the rest of you could find a way out.
You helplessly watched as Hunter put the blaster down and delicately picked up and studied Tech’s goggles.
“Wise decision.” Hemlock praised before he waved his men forward.
Hunter let them pass and allowed himself to be cuffed and brought over to join the two of you.
You and Wrecker were pulled to your feet, and you attempted to wriggle out of their grip, but they wouldn’t give.
“Sir, the girl’s not in the office.” The troopers informed Hemlock as they came back out.
You and Wrecker glanced at Hunter who subtly nodded at the two of you.
You and Wrecker shared a small breath of relief. As long as she was safe, you could manage whatever came next.
“She’s long gone. Like I said, Omega’s not going anywhere with you.” Hunter said to Hemlock.
Hemlock merely hummed. “We’ll see.”
The three of you were escorted out but what you couldn’t work out was why you were still being physically restrained whilst the other two got to walk normally.
--
Ord Mantell was in chaos.
People were screaming and clamouring to get out of the way of the Imperial soldiers and AT-AT walkers that were making their presence known.
A series of warning blaster fire halted you all from continuing. You turned in the direction of the fire and your stomach dropped as you saw who was on an upper platform staring down at the rest of you. No, she wasn’t supposed to be here.
“Lower your weapons.” Hemlock instructed his soldiers before he called over to the young girl, “Hello, Omega. We were just talking about you.”
Omega kept her bow activated. “Let them go!”
“Omega, run!” Hunter shouted before he got held back by one of the troopers.
“I won’t let them take you.”
“How about an exchange? If you come with me, your friends will live.” Hemlock negotiated.
“You fucking bastard.” You seethed as you pulled against the hands that were holding the upper part of your arms.
“I don’t believe you.” Omega replied suspiciously.
“I did not come here for them, Omega. I came to return you to Nala Se. She needs your help.”
“He’s lying. They killed the Kaminoans.” Hunter countered.
“Incorrect. Nala Se is alive and well care for.” Hemlock retorted before he returned his attention to the girl. “As you will be.”
“I’m not going with you.” Omega affirmed but she didn’t sense the clone trooper behind her.
“Omega, look out!” You shouted but it was too late.
All of you watched with devastation as Omega met the receiving end of a stun shot and her limp body got picked up by the trooper.
“Scour the city. When you find the third clone, send them back to Eriadu. Governor Tarkin wishes to question you personally.” Hemlock walked over to you. “But you…” He smiled coldly at you. “Your use lies elsewhere.”
Your heart shattered as you realised what that meant.
Hunter’s head turned sharply to look from Hemlock to you and the pained panic on your face mirrored his own. He reacted instantly and ran for you, but he didn’t make it far before the troopers separating the two of you got in the way and shoved him back. He continued to try and fight his way through, but the cuffs limited his effectiveness and a strong punch to his stomach winded him and he hunched over in discomfort. He took a few deep breaths and wriggled free of the two soldiers that had come to bring him back in and tried again but this time he was met with a kick to his already wounded torso.
You were shouting unintelligible sounds of protest as you writhed and struggled against the strong hands holding you back and attempting to drag you away. You managed to stamp on the foot on one of your captors and elbow one of the others in the stomach and their grip faltered.
But they regrouped quickly.
A swift hit of a blaster on your still wounded head had you blinking away black dots. You could do nothing to stop the severe grip one trooper took on the back of your neck, forcing you to hunch over whilst the others grabbed your arms and got ready to take you away.
“Let them.” Hemlock held a hand up to stop the actions of his soldiers. It would only help with his process. Let the two of you have the chance at a last moment together dictated by him and stopped by him. The emotional turmoil it would create would play beautifully.
Still half-dazed, when the troopers let you go, you were left with no choice but to fall to the ground.
Hunter shoved past the line of soldiers and knelt before you. As gently as he could manage, he placed his hands under your chin to push your head up. “I love you.” Hunter choked out.
Hemlock signalled his men.
You wanted to say so much more but you didn’t have the time. “I love you too.” You replied, your voice cracking. Your lips met for the briefest of moments but that was all you managed before you got hauled to your feet and they yanked you away from him.
As he watched your fading figure, Hunter didn’t have the strength to fight the troopers that lifted him to his feet and led him and Wrecker in the opposite direction.
--
The only thing that was keeping you from giving into the pounding agony that was bouncing around your skull was that Omega was now being carried alongside you. You would hang on for her.
“What are we doing?” One of the remaining troopers asked as he saw the group split off.
“Doctor Hemlock wants her getting a separate shuttle in case the others get away and come looking for them.” The clone in charge of the group answered.
“Please.” You begged with a broken breath as you saw the group separate and Hemlock disappeared down the street with Omega. “Just let me go with her. I won’t-” The butt of a blaster meeting your cheekbone shut you up and you groaned with the stinging pain it left you. Your vision kept blurring in and out of focus.
“Quiet! Keep walking!” The trooper ordered you.
You had so little resolve left. Hopelessness had overwhelmed you, so you followed their orders, your feet dragging as they led you in the direction of wherever the other shuttle was.
--
Hunter could feel the fight leaving him as he and Wrecker were escorted to the shuttle that would take them to Eriadu. So much of what he cared about had been ripped from him and now the remaining people in his life that he loved would pay the price for his failure. The echoes of explosions and blaster fire grabbed his attention, and he looked up to see a walker come stomping round the corner but it’s aim was directed towards the Imperials.
“Echo?” Wrecker asked.
“Gotta be Echo.” Hunter agreed as he dug deep for the energy to fight back.
Wrecker broke his cuffs open on the top of his knee and Hunter landed a kick to the trooper behind him to give Wrecker time to undo his cuffs.
The two of them worked on taking care of the remaining troopers and stole their blasters and fired on the clones that were aiming for Echo’s walker. What they couldn’t stop however, was the next walker that rounded the corner that fired on Echo’s.
Echo went to the hatch and jumped out of the walker just as it collapsed to the ground.
“Where are the other two?” Echo asked as he emerged from the downed walker with AZ and took cover with his brothers.
“That Imperial took them.” Wrecker answered.
“It was Hemlock. We’ve got to stop his ship from leaving.” Hunter said.
The three of them scanned for ways out but reinforcements were arriving from both sides. It was then though that Hunter noticed a platform that ran above the landing pad where Hemlock’s shuttle must be and the group of them made their way up to it, avoiding enemy fire as they did so.
--
Hunter ran ahead to the edge of the platform and could only watch with despair and agony as Hemlock’s shuttle took off. He paid no attention to the surrounding sounds of blaster fire; he couldn’t turn his gaze away from the departing ship.
Half his life was on that ship.
Hell, his heart was on that ship.
And he couldn’t stop it.
He couldn’t stop any of it.
And it broke something in him.
It killed him.
Echo’s voice dragged him back.
“Hunter, we have to go!”
Hunter managed to find his voice. “Get to the Marauder!” He ordered and the three of them started to run once more.
--
They made it to their ship and managed to take off but there was no relief in the feeling. The air was thick with grief and loss.
“There was no way to track Hemlock’s ship. He could’ve taken them anywhere.” Echo said forlornly from the cockpit.
Hunter glanced back to where Omega’s room was, then he saw Wrecker cradling Tech’s goggles. Then he found himself fiddling with the cord around his neck and his fingertips grazed the small symbol attached to it. He’d failed so many people. Everything he’d promised both to himself and to his squad had fallen apart so quickly before his eyes and he couldn’t do anything to stop it. Well, no more. He refused to let this be how things ended. “We are going to get them back.” He said darkly. “And we don’t stop searching until we do.”
--
The shuttle you were being taken to was on the other side of the city, but you had finally arrived.
The ramp lowered and you didn’t resist them as they nudged you towards it.
You walked a couple paces but then you spotted the smoke bomb thrown at your feet.
Fog engulfed you.
You were set free but all you registered were the panicked shouts and shots from blasters around you.
The Imperials didn’t last long, in rapid succession you heard the thud of each body that had brought you here.
Then everything went quiet.
A hand from behind grabbed your shoulder.
You reacted quickly and swerved out of the grip and whipped around to land a punch wherever you could reach. You heard the satisfying thump of your fists meeting bone and the figure backed away a few paces.
You readied yourself for the next attack, but it didn’t come.
“That’s a hell of a punch you’ve got. Would hate to see what you’re like when you don’t have cuffs on you.”
You recognised that voice and you pushed the faintness away and peered through the smoke at the figure approaching you, sniper rifle on her shoulder as she massaged her jaw. You relaxed your stance. “Lyra?”
“Hey, stranger.” She greeted you as she began picking the locks of your cuffs.
“What are you doing here?” You massaged your wrists as your binds came loose and you felt the Force start to flow through you again, but it felt… tainted. You searched in the Force around you for any sign of them, but there was nothing there. You really wished that meant they’d found a way out and escaped safely but everything felt disconnected. You weren’t yourself; something had shifted, and you weren’t sure if you would be able to right yourself anymore.
“Rescuing you, kinda thought that much was obvious. Where are the others?”
You felt your throat tighten as you searched for the words, but you couldn’t find them, and your stomach turned with both the aching in your head and your heart. You braced your hands on your knees and threw up.
The smoke had cleared, and Lyra was able to take you in properly. Your ankle was strapped, the skin on your cheek had broken and a purple bruise was starting to take shape and the stitches by your temple were starting to tear open as specks of blood escape the wound. It also wasn’t just your obvious injuries she saw- your body looked heavy with defeat. “What do you need?” She asked kindly.
“I need a ship.” You rasped as you wiped your mouth and stood up.
“You have one.” Lyra pointed to the shuttle right next to you.
“No. I wouldn’t get out of the system in that. They’d find me immediately.” You reached down and took a blaster from one of the unconscious bodies.
“So, you need something off the grid that would not pass any standardised mechanical check?”
“Add in an already scrambled signature and yeah pretty much.” You inhaled deeply as another wave of nausea hit you.
“I know someone who owes me a favour and makes a living from selling ships like that. Can’t promise we’ll get very far but it could work.” She paused as she saw the way you still swayed on your feet. “Are you sure you’re up for that? I can go myself and meet-”
“I’m not getting separated from anyone else.” You said sharply before you straightened your shoulders. “Lead the way.”
--
You waited as Lyra squared up deal and studied your way out of here. The ship did look like a hunk of scrap metal, but it would get you out unnoticed and that’s all that mattered.
“Okay, let’s go.” Lyra said as she came over to you.
You sighed, “Lyra, thank you. For all of this. But you can’t come with me.”
Lyra placed her hands on hips in defiance. “I have nothing here, they wrecked my stall and raided the other stores. I’m going with you. At the very least, you need someone to treat that serious concussion properly.”
Dealing with your injuries were way down on your priority list. You could feel it creeping in again and you weren’t sure you had the strength to oppose it anymore. “What I am… what I’m going to do, you shouldn’t be around for. I can’t-”
“Can’t be worse than what I’ve seen already. Come on, we gotta get going.” She said with finality as she walked past you and up the ramp to the ship.
On her head be it. You thought to yourself as you followed her up and she got the ship in the air.
--
Omega walked out the Imperial shuttle with a deep sense of unease. She recognised Mount Tantiss and the presence of Nala Se troubled her. She feared for what this doctor had planned for her.
“Have Emerie see to her injuries.” Hemlock ordered the assistant that came to greet them.
Omega didn’t follow the woman, she just looked to Nala Se. “Why did they bring me here?” She didn’t get to hear a reply for the trooper behind her prodded her back to make her go inside.
Hemlock addressed the Kaminoan after Omega was out of earshot. “Your prime minister mentioned you had an attachment to the young clone, so I’ve returned her to you. Perhaps now, you will reconsider working on the Emperor’s project.”
“What he seeks is not possible.” Nale Se argued.
“Make it possible. If you refuse or fail, Omega will suffer the consequences.” Hemlock threatened.
Satisfied that his threat had landed effectively, he waved the Kaminoan away and went to go inside but a clone voice stopped him.
“Sir, we’ve heard reports on an attack on the squad escorting the Jedi and the shuttle never checked in. It would seem she escaped.”
Hemlock had to hide his surprise. Clearly something had happened he had not anticipated. “That is… unfortunate, but we’ll make do… for now.”
--
Omega was led into a lab and what she saw horrified her. There were tubes and rows of unconscious clones strapped down onto testing tables. Then her eyes caught sight of someone she knew. “Crosshair!”
She ran over to him and tried to rouse him, “Crosshair? Crosshair?” He showed no signs of movement. She heard the sound of oncoming footsteps and turned to see the woman that must be ‘Emerie’ standing behind her.
“You must be Omega.” Emerie said.
“What did you do to Crosshair?” She asked angrily.
“He’s recovering. I tried to warn him what would happen if he did not cooperate with the doctor.”
“I want to talk to Nala Se.”
“Ironic. You trust the Kaminoan, but not me.”
“I don’t know you.”
“No?” Emerie kneeled in front of the young girl and removed her glasses. “You might know me better than you think.”
Omega furrowed her brow.
“We’re sisters, Omega.”
--
Lyra finished tending to your head and cheek before she went to the cockpit to give you some time.
As you stared down the corridor and out into the blue clouds of hyperspace, you gained a true moment of clarity. The galaxy and the Empire had taken much from you, but you’d always been able to push through.
In a strange way, you’d even thought you were better off because of where you’d ended up. You had gained a greater sense of purpose, you had room to properly care for the people in your life, you had a family.
But now they’d gone too far. Too much had been taken from you, your family, from the people you loved, and you weren’t going to let it happen anymore. You couldn’t let it happen anymore.
You weren’t as strong as you’d thought you were. Something gets cracked enough times enough times, it’s bound to break.
You were done hiding.
Your arms fell to your sides and your fists clenched and the darkness you had been running from since Eriadu came flooding back. Only this time, this time you weren’t going to fight against it.
This time.
This time, you embraced it.

I am now convinced there are several scenes we didn't see all of and will possibly get flashbacks for. There are so many moments that feel like they are deliberately keeping things from the audience especially when it comes to Mike and the lack of his POV from the past two seasons. There is a lot of potential for flashback scenes between the seasons too, as well as at the end of the seasons when they do short time jumps.
S1: - We know there is a scene with Mike biking home after Will's body is pulled out of the quarry. - I am also curious what happened after Mike went to his mother and what that conversation was like. - We also know that El found her way into the basement after Mike left her and they seem to be mid conversation. Mike is flipping through Will's artwork and telling her "what she did sucks" and El is trying to find Will on the radio. We don't see what happens after she finds him until Lucas and Dustin arrive and Mike already decided what to do. How much did they talk about Will when El was at Mike's house? Because there is another moment earlier than this when Mike first finds out she knows him and it's clear they discuss it before Lucas and Dustin arrive. S2: - There is a moment in the Byers house where the phone rings and Joyce looks freaked out but no one answers it. They never say who's calling but she's clearly worried. Bob, Joyce, Will, and Jonathan are having a movie night. - The "crazy together" conversation seems to go on longer than what we see. It's unclear how much time passes between when they have this conversation and when Jonathan takes Nancy home. He's supposed to give Will a ride home so Will was waiting there for him. - Mike, Joyce, Hopper, and Bob are in the lab with Will for a couple days. There is a lot that happened here. - Mike's meltdown with Hopper definitely gets cut short. More was said between these two once Mike calmed down. And Mike spends the next scene standing next to Hopper away from El. Not to mention Hopper interrupting El trying to kiss him. Pretty sure he sees how uncomfortable Mike is here and is helping him and it's related to his meltdown. - The Snow Ball also has potential for extra moments. What happened after what we saw?
S3:
Hopper and Mike's conversation in the car in S3. We know they were talking about El but based on Mike's behavior after there seems to be more to it than that.
I want to know what happened after Lucas and Mike found Will in the rain post-fight. It's nighttime and they are all soaked. But the next scene we get is at the Wheelers house and all three of them are in different outfits and it's morning.
What exactly happened at the end of the season between the mall and the Byers moving? I know there are theories here based on a book but this seems to be deliberately unconfirmed and ambiguous.
Along that line of thought - Mike and Will clearly came to some kind of understanding about D&D. Will tries to get rid of his game and Mike tells him not to. Not to mention Will painted them all as their D&D characters so he must know about Hellfire. Because if he thought Mike still thought it was childish he wouldn't have done this. So they talked about this part of their fight. I wonder if they also talked about Castle Byers.
S4
Mike and El's fight in Lenora. I wrote about this here.
There is also potential for flashbacks of the few calls Mike and Will did have. We know they talked a little.
The Cali gang is missing from the entirety of episode 7. It's possible this could just be because they were only driving and it wasn't a very interesting road trip. But they fact that there isn't even a quick scene of them talking about where they are going or something sticks out.
The two day jump at the end has a lot of unanswered questions: What happened with Mike and El after Mike's monologue because they aren't speaking and are rolling their eyes at each other? El and Will also seem to not be speaking. They must have come into contact with Joyce and Hopper beforehand because they aren't surprised about Hopper being alive and they use the cabin as their meeting place. All of the parents were worried about the kids in episode 7 and suddenly we don't see them anymore (except Karen at one point). How did everyone get out of the UD and how did people respond to Eddie - especially Mike.

I am madly in love with your artstyle and its been a big big inspiration for me as of late. Also, what are your thoughts on Jane and Bonnie? Do you like them or not
AAA thank you so much thats so flattering to hear 🥺💕!!
my feelings on jane and bonnie are nuanced just like my opinion on many of twdg characters. but i love twdg for all its messy fucked up characters :) its fun :) so while i dont hate either of them they definitely still do things that piss me off
in janes case, i think her mentorship/sisterhood with clem came more from her guilt about her sister than actually wanting to have this 11 year old around. so while she would teach clem important survival skills, she was also always quick to leave or act selfishly (clems "i thought you believed in me 🥺" always makes me sad). and this is just solidified by her actions in her S3 flashbacks. i do think she TRIES to work with the group, but she just gets in her own way and is never able to fully integrate, especially since the S2 cast is a fucked up mess in and of itself so its understandable. her actions at the end of S2 are born of pure selfishness, leaving a newborn infant in a random freezing vehicle so she could "show clem what kenny was really like" when clem is WELL AWARE of the thread this madman is hanging on to (having already faced the brunt of his frustrations MULTIPLE times at this point, and is desperate not to lose anyone else). she wanted a fight and she got one. i think maybe she told herself it was about saving clem, but honestly i dont think that was really ever her goal. again i just think a lot of her motivation comes out of the guilt of leaving her sister behind, so she saw clem as a second chance to make things right. but depending on clems actions, she can end up on her own without either of them, and jane can be the sister left behind to die. its interesting to see clem kinda pick up janes personality in the first half of S3 now that shes also at a point where she has no one and trusts no one, and is deep down lonely and longing for community. the difference is clem is not selfish (while still caring about self preservation), and actually likes being able to help people when she can. shes more so just afraid of caring for people again to protect herself from what she sees is the inevitable pain of losing them, as opposed to janes "theyre all just gonna bring you down so you should be on your own instead" outlook. but i definitely saw jane (and luke) as a bigger mentor/big sister(/brother) figure to clem than kenny was to her. jane actually taught her how to take care of herself. kenny was just someone from her past she didnt want to let go of
in bonnies case, she can be really horrible to clem if she listened to luke and stayed back instead of trying to grab him, so i'll literally try to save luke just so i dont have to hear it 😭 but also i like the convo her and clem have on the steps if you tried to save him. its an important character moment for clem, being asked what SHE wants instead of what the people around her want, and that she should start thinking about that, which is formative to the decision she makes (or fails to make) at the rest stop. the way bonnie is initially dismissive of carvers behavior i think is supposed to mirror the way clem can be dismissive of kennys behavior after leaving howes. will they come to see the man they once respected is becoming someone unstable? (i used to be in the "kenny might be going crazy but he'd never hurt clem" camp UNTIL i picked the "lee shouldnt have tried to save me 😔" option in the car and kenny threatened to smack her for it AFTER giving it a moment of hesitation so he KNEW what he was saying there. my jaw was dropped. but kenny is just another interesting flawed character in a game of interesting flawed characters (although they Heavily backtracked on the kenny/carver parallels in the S3 flashbacks. you can make the argument hes happier now but idk he cant come back from the threat for me he MEANT that)). bonnie leaving with mike is fucked but understandable, and she can show real concern after clem gets shot before getting chased off by kenny. i hope her and mike are still out there somewhere i dont hate either of them, even tho it was horrible of them to steal ALL of their supplies when they knew they were leaving TWO children behind. like cmon. but overall i liked bonnie :) shes a bit of a mess but i like her for it
in the end i am a twdg woman character forgiver :) i do love all the fucked up ladies its refreshing let them do dumb shit and make mistakes!!! i love mess :)

Seeing those tags about Jancy pining being drawn out to another season from you has now got me wondering what that would’ve looked like if it happened
Like how would the writers have written it? How different would s3 be? The possibilities are endless and I’m intrigued
Great question! So if they were to drag it out beyond season 2, I think they would have needed to had another barrier emerge to keep Jancy from getting together by the end of season two (because it was clearly building).
So, let’s imagine it’s the end of the season, Nancy and Steve have broken up and Jonathan and Nancy are still dancing around each other because maybe instead of Nancy admitting she waited and everything in the motel room, she makes an off handed comment about how nice it is to have someone who gets her after Barb died/she hasn’t felt this close to someone since Barb’s death/etc.
She’s flirting but he takes it platonically and decides not to make a move or admit his feelings, terrified to ruin their friendship that he knows she cherishes as much as he does.
This leads to longing and pining where Nancy is confused to why he doesn’t seem to like her and makes her feel hurt, and Jonathan’s lamenting internally about his unrequited feelings while still being thankful for her friendship.
Season 2 ends with the snowball where they have a cute moment they each think is only friendly from the other but hoping for more.
Cut to season three! Same premise: Jancy at the newspaper but instead of creating conflict within an established relationship (aka tearing them apart to bring them back together, a classic narrative move they love to repeat) we get Jancy build up!
They’re interns working at the paper and hanging in the dark room all alone. Instead of arguing and having misunderstandings, we get them opening up to each other and eventually admit their feelings after the monster fight in the hospital when they think they’ve lost each other. This would happen in the much needed resolution scene post hospital where they’re clinging to one another processing both their close encounter with death and feelings for one another. Epilogue remains the same but is that much more heartbreaking since they only just got together and now they’re being forced apart.
In season 4, I’d struggle with what to do because the conflict in and of itself is good. I just didn’t like how Nancy wasn’t able to fully talk about it with anyone other than Fred (and even then she wasn’t completely open, more defensive) and kind of Robin.
So I guess I’d have Jonathan not go see Nancy because if his car and issues but then have Nancy surprise him in Cali. Here we can see them start to talk about their issues and give the common “break them down to build them back better” establish led relationship conflict shows love so much (like they did in season 3). Bonus: we get to have argyle and Nancy scenes!
I know people really loved Nancy’s Hawkins story and I wouldn’t want to take her from all of that… but it’s my ask box and I can be selfish lol.
So yeah, this would set us up for Jancy reconciliation and strengthening in season 5! So not terribly much has changed, merely shifted!

I know there are certain points in s3 where we’re supposed to take certain words and actions of Hopper’s as Mike’s own words/actions in a small sense? Obviously not all of them, but some of them definitely are.
Like with the whole letter at the end of the season thing, parts of it were conveying Mike’s feelings for Will and how he feels like he’s losing him. Also Joyce helping Hopper with his feelings at the start of s3, where he’s like, maybe you can do it for me and she’s like no it only works if it comes from you… that was very s4 Will helping Mike with the painting, but it not being successful bc it didn’t come from Mike coded.
Though there is one other detail I didn’t notice until the other day and it’s pretty insane.
While Mike is no doubt stressed about Hopper threatening him about continuing to date El, I think the way they go about it is… interesting in the context of Hopper sometimes representing Mike in a sense.
Its 3x02, just after 9am, and El’s calling Mike like Where are you!? And Mike is just stumbling on his words trying to find a way to get through this smoothly without fucking everything up…
And after the phone call is over, we transition to Hopper smirking, followed by jamming out in his car celebrating, arriving at Melvalds to celebrate with Joyce, saying this is the first day in 6 months that they’re not hanging out with each other…
You’re telling me, for the last 6 months, Mike has been going to see El at the cabin, just for them to sit in her room most of the day doing nothing…
It’s early July and Will says it’s been like this all summer, which presumably means based on what Hopper and Will said, they still hung out during the school year, but it wasn’t as bad bc obviously Mike had to go to school for the first half of the day, and maybe just dropped by the cabin after school for a few hours.
But that got me thinking, would it be so wrong of Mike to not like feeling obligated to hanging out with El at all waking hours?
I never really thought about it, but within the context of Hopper jamming out and celebrating at the prospects of them not hanging out for one day for the first time in months… would it be so mad for Mike to feel some relief about this too?
We see the contrast of how he runs after Will after their fight, but then sort of just dailies around aimlessly after El dumps him. In one scenario he’s panicked and rushing bc he’s scared he hurt Will and it’ll ruin things between them, while in the other it’s treated sort of like a comedy, where Mike is presumably in no rush to fix things with El post-breakup. He seems like he’s almost stalling, especially in comparison to how he reacts to Will yelling at him.
There’s also this moment when Mike is like exaggerating the situation, by saying that if he doesn’t lie to El and avoid her, Hopper is never going to let Mike see her, ever again…
It seems to me like Mike has a sort of all or nothing attitude when it comes to El.
He’s convinced himself that either he can be in a relationship with El and never be apart, or they can’t see each other at all.
Lucas even makes a comment like did he threaten to kill you? And Mikes like No?!? And Lucas is like okay what’s the big deal then?
They literally have experience with ignoring Hopper’s threats ie the pilot episode when Hopper said not to look for Will, yet Mike was at the forefront making that a priority in spite of Hopper’s warning.
Basically, as the saying goes, if he wanted to, he would…
We know that applies to Will more than it applies to El.
All I’m saying is, there’s something visceral about El getting off the phone with Mike and Mike being like SHIT and it transitioning to Hopper smiling and then jamming out in his car.
This would be the first day this summer Mike has not hung out with El most of the waking hours and is instead spending time with his friends. This also gives El a chance to hang out with Max and to grow beyond this idea of what Mike has framed as their only option.
Leading up to their breakup, even though Mike’s fixated on putting up an image of ugghh gf problems, you can see the scenes are meant to be framed like male bonding. Even max makes a claim they’re probably just playing Atari. So there is this concept in Max’s mind even, that this was an out for Mike to hang out with his friends. Albeit a cowardly way to go about it. But all the pieces sort of fit together.
We get a literal shot of Mike staring at Will, pretending to not enjoy himself, with the Cocoa Puffs in the background. We get a shot of Lucas trying to give Mike the Cocoa Puffs and Mike denying them… We get Mike giving a play by play of how they can end the game right then and there, meaning that despite his look of ‘boredom’ during Will’s campaign, he actually was paying very close attention to it.
Mike is out here denying going crazy with Will while simultaneously worrying too much about El, as if them not being romantic means they can’t have a relationship at all…
Someone give this dude some clarity.

One thing that frustrates me about Gilmore Girls is the way Jess is written between S2 and S3. Or more accurately, how other characters' reactions to him are written.
S2 Jess causes trouble, there's no way around that. But the townsfolk are way too hard on him, and the show is VERY clear about that. We're meant to see Taylor as hysterically overreacting about Jess. We're meant to see the Town Meeting about evicting him as a bad thing. We're meant to feel badly that the town blames him for the car accident. We're meant to think that Lorelai was completely unreasonable in that situation. Jess has FLAWS, sure. Even Rory and Luke, arguably the only two people who give Jess a chance, are pretty clear in sharing their thoughts when he's made a mistake. But Rory and Luke are not wrong when they speak about Jess' strengths and potential. And S2 wants me to know that!
But in S3? Suddenly the message seems to be that Jess was bad all along. Which is especially weird because S3 Jess doesn't really cause trouble. Instead, his minor mistakes in his relationship with Rory are blown up into catastrophes. Rory is SAD. She hates who she is with Jess (which is apparently Jess' fault, and has nothing to do with her own lack of communication skills). Rory stops defending Jess. She regrets ending things with Dean, and ultimately describes choosing Jess as a mistake. Jess flunks out of school, and it's presented like it was 100% his dumb fault. Jess then falls apart at Kyle's party, and it's presented like the obvious and unavoidable conclusion to his arc. (Dean? The guy who STARTED the fight? Is portrayed as justified, even honorable.) Luke steals Jess' car and kicks him out, and the show is utterly committed to portraying this as a necessary step in Jess' growth. Luke questions himself about that choice for exactly one second... and he's IMMEDIATELY assured that he did nothing wrong. A message the show sticks with, by the way, for the rest of the series. Luke HAD to kick Jess out. It was NECESSARY. Jess needed to HIT ROCK BOTTOM.
It just feels like a missed opportunity. S2 was such a fun exploration of the faulty judgments and assumptions adults can make about teenagers. The show highlighted the unfair pressure adults put on Jess AND Rory. We were exploring the idea of "good" kids and "bad" kids, and how both types of assumptions are reductive and harmful. Great stuff, and a big reason why S2 is my favorite season.
But then S3 rushes to "correct" that notion by emphatically concluding that Jess is BAD and Rory is GOOD and the adults were right all along. And Jess doesn't become good until much later. After he's "learned his lesson" by getting kicked out, thoroughly chastised, and silenced into the "right" kind of good behavior.

I just saw your post about Nancy kinda not having relevance to the plot, and I never saw it that way, but it's kinda true.
She never grows as a character, and her plots are not really that important when it comes to the overall storyline. (At least in s1-3, in s4 her getting the info out of Wayne Munson helped the group move forward, but Robin is the one who found the rest and figured out the music theory).
Anyway, like you said in s1, Barb didn't have to die in order for her to be involved? She could have helped Jonathan because Will is Mike's friend, however the writers made her such a bitch about Wills disappearance they had to kill her best friend in order for her to care. And even then Jonathan could have figured out that there was a monster based on the photos he took he could have go straight to his mom who already told him about it. He didn't necessarily need Nancy.
In s2, her plot was so stupid, and it did nothing in the end. It was an interesting concept, dealing with grief, but omg. First of all the lab doesn't play around they would have found the recorder and second seeing the fucking gate should have put the entire thing down. She endangered the whole town of Hawkins in the name of revenge. Both, her and Jonathan didn't know El was alive getting the lab shut down was stupid because they were the only people who seemingly knew how to deal with the vines. It would have been much more interesting if Jonathan and Nancy were captured and there were consequences (like Steve, who was scared of getting murdered if they broke the NDAs). Getting revenge on Barb did nothing for her character as well, and the show never explores it further, or they rehash it. Shutting the lab down did more harm than good because it meant for s3 that the Russians could just do whatever thanks to Nancy. (I hate that storyline so much in general, but if you think about it, it only happened because the lab shut down)
S3 again, Nancy's rat story could have been cut out because the party figured it out themselves they didn't need her. El was the one doing all the work here (getting into Billy's mind and fighting the Mindflayer since Nancy can't aim for shit)
In s4 like I mentioned, Nancy was useful for once by getting them to Victor Creel, but Robin really was the one getting it together.
Overall, her plans always kinda fail or endanger people (s2, s4), and her using a gun also does nothing because the monsters are immune to it. Fire is the thing that works and I hate how Stobin were cut short in s4 for essentially doing the part just so Nancy gets her shot (metaphorically and literally) even tho it does fucking nothing. Give her a flamethrower like Murray.
Anyway, idk people always shit on Steve being considered a main character, but he had literally more important moments than Nancy.
Without him in s1, Jancy would be dead. Nancy's gun did not work, and Jonathan couldn't use the bat in the right way. If Steve didn't come back, the Demogorgon would have killed them. Dustin meeting Steve in s2 is such an important moment because without him there, Billy could have gotten to Lucas and Max, even tho he lost the fight. He was also important in the tunnles because he helped them getting out there fast. Even tho he was concussed, he did everything to ensure they were save. Lucas would have been seriously hurt. S3 Steve drove his car into Billy's (after Nancy couldn't stop it with her useless gun), saved Jancy and the party there. In s4, he was the one who found the gate because of his experiences as a life guard, he also was the one along with Robin who did the most damage to Vecna. Steve literally has more moments that are important to the plot because without him there, other characters would be hurt or killed. He's important to the plot because of his athletic skills and survival instincts. He was also one or one of the few (if not the only one idk I only watched s4 vol once bc I hated it sm) characters that protested Nancy's insane plan because he has common sense lol. I wish the show would use his leader abilities (being the captain of the basketball team and a lifeguard) more instead of dumbing him down for the sake of it. He should be actively involved in planning bc he knows how to play as a team, and idk the party is book smart, but they have no regard for any danger they need someone like him more.
Yessss
The only thing I have to disagree with is that Nancy was helpful in s4, literally anyone else could've been told about Victor Creel, they didn't even need Wayne munson for that tbf, Eddie could've been living on his own(he's old enough) or just not a character at all tbh. Steve or Robin could've been talking to a customer at the video store who lived in the trailer Park and got a glimpse of Chrissy's body and Robin and Steve could've gone to the library while the Dustin and Max went to the counselor.
I definitely agree about Steve, he is honestly being underutilized, he clearly has team building, athletic, and problem solving skills but he's constantly being reduced to dumb hot himbo and it's really frustrating.
I didn't love the s2 storyline but I didn't hate it, but wow you're right, she really just made everything worse and endangered everyone for her own selfish reasons. I understand she was working through trauma but so was Steve and he didn't decide to put people lives in danger.
Her entire s3 plot just pissed me off so much, what was the reason? Feminism? Because honestly it just made her look like a classist dick to jon.
Nancy really doesn't do shit but nearly always ends up getting credit for things other people have done, both from the writers and the fandom.

Why should we feel suspense about Athena possibly crashing a plane or Denny being hit by a car when we know they don't kill their main characters anyway?
Why should we worry about Gerrard taking over the 118 or Henren loosing Mara when we know they're will be a happy ending anyway?
Why should we worry about Henren tensions over Hen's job when we know they'd never really put being a first responder in a bad light anyway?
Why should we believe that Eddie has now truly found himself when every previous time he regressed to the same traumatised person anyway?
Why should we root for any of Buck's romantic relationships when we know they won't last more than a season anyway?
Why should we care about any of these storylines when we've seen them a hundred times before and we know the ending anyway?
Why are we even still watching this show when all of the developments ended after s3 anyway?
(This got out of hand, but apparently I still have plenty to say.)
I think putting characters into dangerous or emotionally taxing situations isn't necessarily about the "Will they survive/overcome this struggle?" (They will. We know this.) it's about the "How will they survive/overcome this struggle?" and "What will they have to endure to make it through?"
But for those questions to actually catch the viewers attention and to keep them interested you have to be creative, find complications for the characters to struggle with, evoke genuine emotions and empathy from the viewers. You can't do that if you keep giving the characters easy solutions right away and rush storylines that could've easily taken half a season to be resolved.
Even repeating themes can be interesting if you switch things up a little. Show how the characters dealt with it then and how they deal with it now. Is there new information, more context this time?
A relatively(!) good example for this (I think so at least) was last season's "Step Nine" (7x08). They once again brought up Bobby's struggles with depression, addiction and suicidal ideation and they once again brought up the Minnesota apartment fire. But they also brought new aspects to the topic.
For one, they gave us more information about Bobby's childhood and his father's history with addiction. It gave us a nice parallel, history repeating itself (professional and reputable firefighter, family man, father of 2, wrecks his marriage and destroys his life by leaning on substance abuse as a crutch), but they also gave us Bobby breaking the cycle. He got sober, started accepting help and put his life (and himself) back together again.
They also introduced a new character, Amir, and at first we couldn't be sure how he fit into the picture. And with Amir they added another layer to Bobby's grief and guilt. He left Minnesota to get a fresh start and he used that fresh start to do penance until he was in a place where he could also think about doing things for himself again. But he only ever sought penance for the lives that ended in that fire, not the lives which's trajectory got changed forever that night. He ran from that, but now it caught up with him.
They did kind of drop the ball on that in the finale, sadly. They used the "could Amir be the real villain here?" red herring twice over the course of only three episodes which is just lazy and I also wish that at this point in the story Bobby would've asked for help. Instead he let things get so bad that he basically planned his suicide again, had a huge fight with Athena again, instead of talking things out with her they both almost died again and that was the end of that conflict again.
A really bad example on the other hand is the Ortiz storyline. This is I think the fourth custody battle Henren go through with one of their children. Eva tried to get Denny back twice, they lost Nia and then Mara. (There was also the failed IVF plot if you wanna count that as one of the "almost losing a kid" plots.) (911 really said "let's make these lesbians suffer as much as possible in their attempt to start and keep a family.")
Now Ortiz is, admittedly, a new kind of antagonist. Unlike Eva, Ortiz has a lot of power and can really use the system to work against Hen (and Karen, but mostly Hen). They showed that and raised the stakes pretty early in 8x04 by putting a contact ban into place between the Wilsons and Mara.
Which could've led to a truly delicious, multi-layered, emotionally complex conflict involving not only Hen and Karen, but also the Han family. Because at first it was a real blessing that Maddie and Chim were able to take in Mara, but now? Now they can't even spend time together as families anymore. How does that impact Hen and Chim's ride-or-die friendship of over 15 years? Are Hen and Karen resentful that Mara is now a part of the Han family instead while they can't even talk to her anymore? Do Chim and Maddie feel guilty? How is Mara herself coping with all of this? Eddie also just lost his son in a similar enough way and can't talk to him, does he bond with Hen and Karen over that?
But before any of those questions can be posed, before any feelings of empathy for all these characters can really settle in, before Ortiz can stir up even more shit for Hen and without any of the characters directly affected really doing anything, the problem is solved. In the very same episode. While they also spend way to much time on a cgi tiger for some reason. I just. Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking.
Sadly, 911 rarely if ever takes the time anymore to let a storyline develop naturally and over the course of multiple episode. They skip over the truly gut-wrenching parts and fast forward to the easy solution.

Why I hate MMFD Series 3, Circa 2015.
Ok, like I said, i randomly found this in my phone. It is extra, it is wild, it all holds up lol. It’s embarrassing, but who cares? S3 was embarrassing. It’s VERY long. Laugh, cry, mock me, fight me, enjoy yourselves. I’ll never get over it.
1. The whole series has a bleak feeling almost immediately that doesn’t let up. I don’t just mean plot, I mean color palette and vibes. It has this washed out feeling I hate.
2. I don’t side with Rae on her interview. I don’t. She didn’t take it seriously.
3. Rae wants to go to uni because..? Rae chose Bristol because..? Rae has no backup schools because..?
4. Rae says she’s happy. Cool. Why? What’s been happening? How’s treatment been going? The most elementary rule of storytelling: show, don’t tell. I feel like we got told for 2 hours, with no fill-in of the gap.
5. The end of season 2 felt like the jumping off of the beginning of something: Chloe healing emotionally, the relationship with Rae and her mom, Rae and Finn, attempts at taking therapy seriously. We spend the next 2 hours digging into NONE of these things. I’m not dumb, I know time was limited. But we needed more exposition, flashbacks, more SOMETHING. Why should I believe things are going well, especially when they’re about to collapse.
6. Flashbacks (this blows my mind): Rae shows us what we think are flashbacks talking about her happiness. They’re not-they’re flash forwards. And all of them are after Rae starts being dishonest and backsliding. That has always upset me as a viewer. We NEVER see Rae progress in this series in retrospect.
7. Why are Rae and Finn hiding major life decisions from each other?
8. Chloe’s doing well! Cool! Again, how and why?
9. Look, I was young with a boyfriend once too. I get there’s limited time between school, work, and family, and you want to spend the time you have taking off each other’s clothes at that age. But there’s no emotional intimacy here and it spits in the face of earlier seasons.
10. “I love you.” Enough said. But fine. Let’s take it at face value. Why are they not expressing themselves ? Are they happy, are they unsure around each other, are they coasting on lust? We don’t know, bc bad storytelling.
11. We’re right back to “let’s only discuss my boyfriend in terms of his looks.” Bo-ring, no growth, and not to get too explicit, but you don’t have repeated, committed sex, and not get past some of this. Embarrassing things happen, funny things, you open up emotionally and get real with yourself and each other. You’re telling me these two never made weird noises or weird faces or sweated horrifically all over each other?
12. I’ve always seen Linda as someone who cares for Rae, worries, and is observant, but often doesn’t do the best thing because of her own issues. She is out to lunch most of the series and I hated it.
13. The car crash. I hate it for so many reasons. It sucked up the plot time we needed not to make the whole series feel disjointed. It was too dramatic for me. One of the things I always loved about MMFD was it felt like a relatable show that featured teens, not necessarily a teen show. This was a teen soap stunt.
14. Rae is ostensibly happy when she gets her acceptance. Why does she immediately discard the idea? Why no inner dialogue about her actual desires?
15. KESTER. We’ve said it all. Kester telling her what to do instead of working through her feelings? Irresponsible. Lying? Irresponsible. Not properly transitioning out of therapy? Irresponsible? The mental health messages were disgusting overall. Add another therapist COVERING and letting her dump her meds was even worse. Kester’s choices were all about covering his own ass, and he’s ultimately pathetic.
16. The Gang. Just so much why? Why are Izzy and Chop forced into being stupid? Why does no one give a shit about Finn? Why is everyone grappling with major life changes but only Chloe and Rae have to bear any drama. Why is Archie not in uni? Why does everyone clearly know Rae is suffering and doesn’t even try to help; more importantly they mock her? That last piece makes me legit angry.
17. I like Rae and Chloe’s friendship growth. That it came at the expense of Rae’s guilt, fear, and shame is just disappointing.
18. Finn looks..tired, even before the Katie business. He looks overwhelmed and unsure and scared, and like he’s spent two years biting his tongue. I don’t doubt for a second he loves her, but is it healthy? It didn’t look healthy, and again, why? You’re getting paid to TELL ME A STORY.
19. Rae never uses anything she learned in therapy all series.
20. No one but Rae gets a real storyline and that stinks.
21. Katie. Faye Marsay is better than this. Lost more plot time for a teenage Single White Female retread.
22. The cheating. Out of character, we never get clear resolution on what happened, and most importantly to me, it’s the main reason for a breakup that has so many other tells simmering in the background, imo. That Rae is condescending, doesn’t own up to her parts, is just. Yeah. Why should I believe this person is ok? PS-We know he bought her that “you’re the milk to my cookies” shirt, it only makes sense. Ma’am you did not act like it.
23. Katie’s entire voodoo speech burns me up because we never get confirmation Rae doesn’t internalize and/or reject this. I actually think a conversation about the ripple effect of mental health is so important, and deserved better than whatever the hell this was.
24. Rae’s whole A-level experience. She gets saved and coddled so she can go somewhere they won’t play that game with her. How does this help her or show she’s ready?
25. No chippy. Fine, whatever, but I miss it lol.
26. Everyone perving on Finn, come on, this was cringe.
27. The look Chloe gives Finn at the pub. I don’t understand it, but I don’t like it.
28. No Baby Bouchtat time, wtfffff.
29. Rae never comes to a realization we hear about why she wants uni. She gets her back against the wall because her mom has to leave and everything else is falling apart. Great.
30. Speaking of, why is Linda still at home 2(?) months after she said she wanted to leave, halfway through her husband’s contract? I thought it was so damn important.
31. Rae’s dad..more plot time wasted. I honestly barely remember this. PS-hey Rae, I bet Finn Nelson would’ve heavily related if you said your shitty dad popped back up and you were struggling.
32. It seems like Rae cuts everybody out after the ball. This is not real life. You lose touch, people fade away, sure. Over months and years, not by cutting bonds off at the knees.
33. Town only being the background to Archie’s plot was such a waste.
34. That tub scene was sickening and irresponsible as fuck. Every other mental health episode in other seasons had inner dialogue to help the audience. That they played it as straight and left the audience dangling that long was reprehensible.
35. Everyone on this show got to develop an outside life we knew about away from Rae except Finn and he deserved more.
36. The going it alone message is terrible. You always need support and love from people around you.
37. Petty, but that dress did Sharon no favors, please dress our queen properly.
38. The last song being Creep is so lyrically bleak and sums up this entire dumpster fire.
39. “The bullshit goes with me?” GOODBYE. Please.
40. The train scene: kind of nice! Reminiscing! Tix! But also weird. Why do Kester and Chloe look so serious? Why does Finn only look like he wants to fuck her? Why is Liam even there? Whatever.
Please add more lol. Or don’t, because this is out of control. I roast because I loved and knew what it was capable of once.
