Annabeth yawned, joining Percy on the couch. They were at his place this weekend; the Manhattan air made her feel alive. Also, making it the perfect photo op, but the planet burning is a bit more of a concern.

Percy scrolled through Instagram, Annabeth sucked into her true crime dramas, content to be in her boyfriend’s arms. He chuckled occasionally, the sound reverberating through her, warming her inside.

As the clock neared nine, she started her nighttime routine of ice rollers and face masks, Percy still on his phone.

“Oh that’s weird.” Percy said, almost like he forgot he was with anyone.

“What’s weird?” Annabeth asked, poking her head in from putting her ice back in the freezer. At least half of her stuff has been moved in unofficially, and though she won’t admit it, she wants to move the rest of her stuff in. That way, she can look at it next to his stuff, and her stuff can be friends with his stuff.

“This girl I went to high school with just texted me.” He said, still not looking up from his phone.

“Why is that weird?”

“Because she never talked to me before.”

“What did she say?” Annabeth asked, an edge to her voice.

“She just said ‘hey.’” He chuckled a little as he said it, tugging at that edge she was trying to keep from biting his head off.

“Are you going to reply?” Her tone came out as edge free as possible, considering how possessive she could be over him.

“I already did.” He said, shutting his phone off finally to look up at her. She was, admittedly, not in her best outfit, just a ratty t-shirt and sweatpants. “Are you almost ready to go to bed?”

“Yeah. Let me just finish up in the bathroom.” She said, her voice coming out smaller.

As she continued her routine, brushing her teeth, whitening strips, and more moisturizers, she heard Percy outright laughing now.

“What?!” Annabeth called from the bathroom, edge evident now.

“She just said something funny is all.”

“Who is this again?” Annabeth asked, that very edge becoming more prominent the more she tried to keep it out of her voice.

“She was the popular girl at my school, which is crazy, because why would she be texting me? Like me?” Disbelief in his voice.

“Hey.” Annabeth said sternly, walking over to where he was on the couch and straddling him. “Don’t talk about my boyfriend like that.”

His hands found their place on her hips, his phone forgotten for the time being as she ran her fingers through his hair and kissed his neck.

“I’m sorry, I wasn’t very popular back in high school. You know, the whole stoner thing.” He gripped her hips, keeping her close. It was more validating than it should have been.

“What did you say to her?”

“That I could see her Friday for lunch, why?” He asked between kisses.

“Just be careful.”

“I’m a big boy, she can’t hurt me anymore.”

“Anymore?”

“Well, she used to throw garbage at me and Grover when we would hide out under the bleachers. Understandably, we were like gremlins hiding out, afraid of the sun and oh god was it a bad idea to feed us after midnight, ask my suspended ubereats account.”

“Sounds like you were a rebel.”

Annabeth gave him a deep kiss in hopes of holding him over before standing up to redo everything she’d done, having smeared most of her moisturizer on Percy’s neck now.

Percy climbed into bed after squeezing and brushing his teeth between Annabeth’s mishigas of tasks, her face being her brand and all, and was back on his phone.

He laid back into his pillows, his phone buzzing non-stop now.

“Who is it now?” Annabeth asked as she climbed into bed beside him.

“It’s still that girl—Rachel, I guess she doesn’t go to bed at a reasonable time like some people.” Percy said, smiling as he pinched her stomach playfully and grabbed her, pulling her into his chest.

“Well, tell her you have to go to sleep or I’ll be cranky without all my beauty sleep.”

“Right.” He laughed, reaching for his phone, Annabeth settling in on his chest. He kissed the top of her head, maybe sensing some insecurity.

Blog #1 Finally

Genre: Young Adult Fiction & Surreal Dark Comedy

Literary Movement: Postmodernism

The genre “Surreal Dark Comedy” is heavily influenced by the literary movement “Postmodernism” that is played with throughout the first half of the book. “The point is probability and reality. And that’s where parallel universes come in. Reality splits in two possible outcomes - one where the cat lives; another where the cat dies. From every choice you make, another world is created where a different reality happens. ‘So you’re saying if the kitty dies in our reality - boom! - there is another reality born where Whiskers is alive and well and chasing mice in the garage?’” (pg 11). Firstly, this is a reference to Schrodinger’s cat which is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox. What makes this experiment so postmodern, is the fact that any outcome could be happening, therefore any possibility thought of is actually happening somewhere in a parallel universe, meaning that every prediction is inherently correct and there is no “wrong” idea. Considering this is a very complex, and thought worthy topic, it being brought up by stoners in a high school bathroom is somewhat comedic, as well as the surreal dark humor behind dead “Whiskers” playing with mice over his own dead body. I made a connection the the show “Rick and Morty” where they are stuck trying to kill their alternate selves from each parallel universe they created. In each seen universe, the Rick and the Morty are doing something different or opposite to the action happening in another universe. “We become what we behold. We shape our tools and thereafter, our tools shape us.”-Marshall McLuhan. This paradox is evident in the episode as Rick created the machine (tool) that creates parallel universes that ultimately decide the fate of the other ones, thereafter shaping the characters choices in each universe. 

“’I suppose they could if they wanted to, but maybe what they see isn’t what you see’, Dulcie answers in her typically cryptic fashion.” (pg 183) is another evident postmodern proposal because postmodernists use a combination of different lenses to imagine/perceive the world. In this case, Cameron would see her differently than others might because her identity challenges structured notions and meta-narratives/ideologies as she could be seen and exist in and combination of views.

Historical/Cultural Context:

Mad Cow Disease, also known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy slowly destroys the brain and spinal cord, leaving them in a sponge-like state. The human version of this is Creutzfeldt-Jakob (vCJD). In 1986-2001 a British outbreak affected about 180 000 cows. 1993 was the peak of the epidemic and was a result of cannibalism.

Pop Culture References-

Roadrunner/Coyote Cartoon - Perhaps the Coyote represents Cameron, and he’s constantly chasing after life - Roadrunner - which throws him numerous roadblocks on his path until he is eventually put to a halt for the day. OR. The Roadrunner represents Cameron, who has been creating these roadblocks to stop the Coyote - his emotions - from getting to him. “I’ve seen this one a million times (...) Finally, the coyote opens a door and a train runs him right over, poor bastard.” (pg 35). This quote is an example of the more likely scenario where Cameron is the coyote. This is shown by is sympathy for the character’s continuous failure, rather than sympathy for the roadrunners constant state of panic. The hyperbole “I’ve seen this a million times” also hints that he see failure frequently, maybe in his own life.

It’s a Small World - “The realist thing I’d ever experienced was that moment under the water when I almost died. And in a way, I’ve been dying ever since.” (pg 5). Implying that he hasn’t been connected with life ever since his near death experience and portrayed by his teenage self during a constant quest for numbness. For example, drugs, sleep, pushing away his friends. He lost his innocence when he realized the death ride was fake, making all the magical good things about Disney World fake too. This taught him that life isn’t real or worth connecting with because you will get ultimately disappointed by death. 

Literary/Philosophical Culture-

Don Quixonte - A book Cameron is stuck reading in his Spanish class which follows the imaginary adventures of Alonso Quixano and his sidekick when he loses his sanity and decides to set out to revive chivalry, undo wrongs and bring justice to the world. I searched up themes in Don Quixonte since I haven’t read it and one of them is: love as a paramount, which is very prominent on Cameron’s adventure. Cameron starts to fall for Dulcie (unattainable angel) and struggle with his love for his dysfunctional family. Did I mention Cameron’s sidekick is a Spanish boy named Gonzo? I don’t think this was an accident if the plot is somewhat similar to a famous Spanish book referenced within the text.

Psychoanalytic Criticism:

-Cameron’s character is made more complex when his ego is trying to balance his ID and Superego, “Staci Johnson is a shallow, social climber who would never allow me within a ten-foot radius of her magnificent body. I know this. But what can I say? My penis is a traitor.” (pg 16). His Superego is the constructed view of Staci, and her social status. Compared to Cameron’s social status, them together would never work, nor would she even try. Although he doesn’t have an intellectual feelings for her, he has a sex drive and instinct to find her attractive and get aroused by her body. He calls his penis a traitor because he doesn’t want to like her in anyway, but the ID/sexual need is too overpowering to stop looking at her that way. 

-Recurring symbolism is used very well in this book. “A black box with an angel snow globe Jenna and I got him for Christmas one year. The base broke off a while back, and now the angel leans against the glass with both hands like she’s trying to get out.” (pg 27) The snow globe is the recurring symbol of their dysfunctional or broken family. The base breaking off a while back represents the tragedy (drowning) that altered the family’s system (globe) putting the angel (Cameron) in a position of pain that he desperately wants to escape. This is an example of how Cameron feels inside his own mind, by creating an unconscious mind to store his pain and conflict. In Psychoanalytic theory, a Childhood trauma is often hidden in the unconscious. Cameron was 5 years-old when he almost died/when the base of the glob broke.

-Plot is also extended in Cameron’s unconscious mind. “(...) to use to discover strings and super-strings and parallel worlds our brains aren’t wired to see yet; worlds that could be as small as a snow globe or as big as the Milky Way.” (pg 66). Not only does this shown his “small world/family system” is the globe, but it relates to his dads job (disproving string theory). This enhances the plot because Cameron is dealing with family issues already, and now has to be involved with everything his dad works to disprove in order to survive. Which would make a whole new internal battle since he already feels as though he has failed his dad.

-Conflict happens in multiple scenes both internal and external. There is an entity that appears and wants to battle Cameron and other characters. For Junior Webster, we see the entity try to fight him in a trumpet play-off. If Webster didn’t win, it would be the ultimate failure since his trumpet playing skills are his biggest success. Does this mean the entity represents the fear of failure? Cameron's biggest fear so far is failure but why does he see the entity as a phallic knight? “That’s what you see, than that’s him. Don’t always look the same for ever’body.” (pg 153)

- CESSNAB community is an external representation of Cameron’s use of the denial defense. “We like to think of CESSNAB as a gated community for the mind, and the stuff that doesn’t increase our happiness we just keep out.” (pg 210). This quotation defines the word denial itself, and for a long period of time in this community, Cameron loves it and finds it very effective. This is because he has been using the defense internally for over 10 years and is now applying it to every day situations, rather than just his unconscious pain.
