and the way the book treats the death of ranger’s abuser!! it’s cathartic to see him die, but the book doesn’t really cheer. it prioritizes the comfort of the victims. i LOVE ranger’s reaction here. he’s not happy that gar face is dead, but he’s relieved that he’s finally free and able to be with his family without that risk constantly looming over him

the chapter where the trees make everyone in the forest sleep to give puck, sabine, and ranger the comfort and safety to sleep after the hell they just endured. sob.

#something i also like is the metaphor for just how hard it is to leave an abuser #its not just that the chain keeps ranger bound to gar face. ranger depends on him for food and shelter #gar face simply dying on a hunt wouldve just killed ranger as well #like. its not as simple as ‘’lol kill that guy’’ or ‘’why dont you leave?’’ bc ranger quite literally CANT #ntm the good memories he does have of gar face that do not serve to downplay his abuse at all #just serve to show how horrific and harrowing the situation is for ranger #the underneath liveread
