Lewis spends the first 12 years of his life loving inventing but being too far on the wrong side of eccentric to get adopted, until he meets his son from the future, and consequentially, the rest of the people who will become his family once he is adopted. So like, he does get parents and a family in the end, but the whole plot of the movie leading up to him meeting his family in the future (and even some time after he meets his family but before he realizes they are) is that he feels worthless because he's an orphan and no one wants to adopt him.
