CX ch 45 thoughts! - you three did good work

I feel like this is a very specific phrase --that you don't have to change -- to start this new part of the investigation.

Once again enjoyed Azuma being involved in scenes where he is not acting repressed or vaguely sinister. I think they all have more interesting aspects to their post-timeskip characters that chill set-up chapters are great at showing.

Why does Sato look so extra and evil in every panel he's in? It feels like a running gag at this point. He's been doing this the whole story and it honestly has made me really enjoy his character. The way Sato is framed is just so blatant and unsubtle that it goes back around to being mysterious again

Enjoyed the additional Arthur characterization.

Palma swimming for two months is such a perfect encapsulation of what rocks about this series. It's the fun mix of intrigue, whimsy, and unsettling horror. She somehow feels like she's been in the story the whole time.

Also the Bill Morse, zombie island is very, very cool world building, and I am excited to see what theories and links people smarter than me will find! I appreciate how we were eased into Palma's character, and now that we like her, Ishida can drop wackier and wackier ideas.

Nude is fine. His new "living" predicament is the most interesting thing about him right now, but I feel like the author enjoys drawing him. But most importantly...

Ely's back in the spotlight!

Ely continues to be great, and appreciate the lack of love triangle (so far). It's been fun seeing the romance subplot develop.

I hear people saying Ely hasn't had an arc yet, but a) I'm sure it'll come in due time, b) Ely has always been a emotionally mature character, and c) Ely is very important for fleshing out Azuma's and Tokio's personalities, whose arcs and emotional states have been given most of the focus post-timeskip.

She hasn't really been given an impetus to change. Her current function in the story is to push the other two to grow through their stubbornness (or "relentless"ness). The not-talking subplot didn't overstay its welcome because she could read both of them enough to call them out on it. She knows how they think and how their personalities interact. I'm excited for her to be front and center again!

To wrap up, I'm looking forward to see this new four-man squad interact with each other. The Tokio-Mic-Mike dynamic will be missed, but it will be interesting to see how Tokio's leadership abilities work under three characters who might not follow orders as militantly.

Hello, what do you think about Choujin X latest chapters? How its prologue compares to TG? Have a good day.

*sweats* oh dear. My opinion won't be popular.

I liked the most recent chapter because it offers the tease of some stakes, which have thus far been lacking.

It's TG 2.0/Penisman 3.0, with recognizably the same characters/events as TG--like, Nari is a Rize/Nishiki hybrid but without offering anything new to the premise or conflict. Unlike the former two, Choujin X has no established world or societal conflict 7+ chapters in, and that's awfully late to establish the conflict.

Like, all of Ishida's works are based in this Kafkan concept of The Metamorphosis and the line between monster/human, which is cool. I love seeing authors continue to develop their ideas. But in the former two, the premises come with inherent established conflicts that hook the reader; thus far, Choujin X does not have this.

Penisman: the premise offers a conflict in challenging societal issues about sex and how our view of sex affects how we see human beings;

TG: the premise challenges morality with ghouls needing to eat humans to live; no matter what, someone dies, and if you need to kill to live, what does that mean for humanity?

In Choujin X, any inherent challenge in the premise beyond looking weird is absent. Like, there might be something else to it, but it should have been established what the conflict is at this point. If it's just that Choujins look weird and can be dangerous, why aren't we being told or shown any of this? There should be an emphasis on appearances or danger to reinforce this (think about TG's opening chapter, for example, where Hide and Kaneki hear a news report about ghouls). There isn't any of this so far.

Not only that, but the real crux of the series, its most compelling element by far, is the relationship between Tokio and Azuma, but... that hasn't been expanded on enough. We're still not sure what the dynamics of this relationship are. The first chapter really got me to care about this relationship, but thus far nothing has happened to give any stakes to this relationship. There should be some hints, but there really aren't any.

So thus far it seems unpolished and almost unedited, like a first draft that is missing certain key elements of a story. But it's Ishida, so I hope for it still and am as always, in awe of his art and character designs.

Planting The Seeds of Turbulence

Consolidating my thoughts from my Twitter post over on Tumblr. If you want a TLDR vers, this Twitter thread is the way to go laughs.

Chapter 3 of Choujin X felt like the most "TG-esque" one for me so far. It felt nostalgic because it was about setting up the scene for future issues. Particularly Azuma and Tokio's friendship. In Chapter 3, we see the post-mortem from the first chapter's events:

We know Tokio turns into a vulture-esque Choujin, destroys their pursuers, and escapes with Azuma. And Azuma seems to have no physical changes / reactions from taking the serum.

In fact, Azuma descends into a slump from discovering that his blood tests and his appearances were normal. He's disappointed that he has no Choujin powers (at least, not yet). From his point of view, someone as high-spec as him, coming from an elite family background, not getting dope powers is probably blasphemous. This is further reinforced by his hero/saviour complex that was introduced with his debut in Chapter 1:

The key here that really plants the seeds of turbulence is that Azuma feels, perhaps for the first time, inferior to someone. Coming from a well-known background in police-work (though we have not seen too much of it), justice is a big part of his life, his very identity. He constantly gets applauded for being bold, brave, courageous, and he is always likened to that of a lion.

One thing we can read into about the lion symbolism is that, lions are always associated with their pride. Their ego. Azuma is definitely prideful, and his pride here is taking a hit from not being granted so-called "powers" even after the Choujin injection. In Chapter 3, Azuma also has the thought that, perhaps your Choujin abilities are derived from a subconscious image you desire:

Think his theory is justified (I mean, just look lmao)! But also, what does that mean for Azuma then, who turned into...

... oh wait. Nothing happened.

The relative deprivation sets in. Comparing himself with his best bud, who was always kind of his lackey, because even though it was never much of a matter, Azuma was in every-which-way better than Tokio. And the high expectations people have around him that affects his own self-image, that he ought to be blessed with success and power. Not to mention, it was thanks to Tokio's powers that saved their asses in the first place! In that moment, wrapped up in these thoughts, it is understandable for Azuma to feel inferior and frustrated to snap at Tokio.

But little does Azuma know, it is precisely Azuma's presence that made Tokio accept his vulture self in the first place! To Tokio, even if the impression of the vulture is pathetic and lowly, it is kinda cool because Azuma thinks it is. Azuma redefined what a vulture could be, shifted his perspective, and thanks to that, Tokio was okay with his self-image association with the vulture. Following Azuma's "you are who you desire" theory, Tokio accepts himself as a vulture, enough to desire it and become a Vulture-type choujin.

In Chapter 3, we see Azuma let out his pent-up frustration at Tokio. "For once in your life, why can't you think for yourself!" He yells. And Tokio doesn't even rebut his criticism. That's because what Azuma says is bulls-eye. It's true. We see Tokio respect, admire, and really be by Azuma's side always. And if we take it a step further, it holds true in the symbolism level too. Vultures are scavengers, they always leech off the lion's kill. Something like that.

Therein lies, the very root of the tension of Azuma and Tokio's relationship to come. How will they navigate this issue as things go? So far, there's hope. Azuma regains his composure, and he regrets yelling those things, and calls for Tokio, just barely missing him. But it's okay, it's not too late to fix this.

But also, moving forward, this definitely is going to be something worth coming back to and analysing.

Perhaps Azuma, fearing his insecurities will ruin their friendship, continues to bottle it up, and potentially turning to bad influences to seek greater power? Like Sasuke lmao. Someone on Twitter mentioned the possibility of him joining the "dark" side seeking mentorship with the known "baddies" like Chandler Hume or the masked man.

As for Tokio, the challenge he has to navigate, in my opinion, would be how to "think for himself". Not rely or depend on anyone, or Azuma. Knowing how important Azuma is to him, these words are definitely going to weigh heavily on his mind, and influence his behaviours moving forward. But to some extent, it's also kinda futile... because if Tokio is going to be independent he is also effectively listening to Azuma, relying on Azuma's feedback to make his decisions once again.

Finally, while re-reading the chapters to write this, these panels and dialogue are definitely major sus to me. Possibily as foreshadowing. I swear, this is going to come back and bite my ass one day...

A Wild Sheep Chase: Chapter 2 of Choujin X!

It's here! I've gushed about the chapter over at my Twitter, but like I said in my previous post, I want to see how the story progresses and keep a log about it. So here it goes!

Background info on Ely Otsuta

So before we delve into Chapter 2 which almost exclusively featured Ely... Let's take note of the new things we learned about Ely:

She's from a rural prefecture. I think she lives in the mountainside specifically since that's where she grows her tomatoes.

She's a greenthumb (we already kinda knew this from the previous chapter but we learn more about her life pre-Choujin X). I understand that even if the soil is infertile, she's able to grow tomatoes so nutritious and plump. So plump, they resemble butts, hence, "bumbums!" It appears she uses advanced equipment for her farming stuff. So yeah, based on these, it's established Ely has a green thumb!

Oh, and it appears that it's clarified that her "Grandpapi" whom she talks about in the 1st chapter is an adoptive grandfather (not biological, hence, maybe in the future we'd know her parents and learn why Ely is special).

It's just me but I get the impression that Ely is being introduced as some sort of "fertility" choujin, since she also dreams of having 9 kids. Haha!

It's kinda weird though why the burning tomato has a face. Was it just from her dream, since after plucking a bumbum - she woke up? Hmm, after some thought, I think the burning tomato with a face is just from her dream.

Ely Wakes Up from Reality

When Ely woke up, she finds herself in the South Yamato prefecture. Okay, so I think this leaning tower of some sort has a significance to the story.

It's featured in every spread with the title "Choujin X" and also in the last chapter. Can you see it? Maybe it has something to do with how the powers are made, like pollution-related or a botched experiment. Dunno. Just my wild speculation.

A Wild Sheep Chase

This is the exciting part. So when Ely wakes up, Chandra Hume offers to "escort" her, but really it appears he wants to kidnap her. And from, *checks the manga* page 10 to 40, we have Ely running away from Chandra until she fell in what looks like a similar area where Tokio and Azuma fought Johnny Kiyoshi Takeyama.

The chase sequence consisting of 30 pages were so fun and I was smiling all the while I was reading! Ely is so cute trying to parkour her way through the buildings (kinda reminds me of Touka?? I miss Touka!). Chandra looks really cool, he seemed to be flying too, using his powers (more on that later)!

But not to be outdone, Ely borrows a "Roller Boy Yay-Yay" which basically is a scooter with something that resembles a driver's wheel. As for Ely, she is really good with the tractor as she said. The hilarity of outrunning motorcycles and what could be a Porsche. That tractor prowess! Later on, Chandra and the other sheep figure into an accident with a "safety-loving" truck (oh the irony, lol). Chandra flew off the car and so did his fancy shoes...

Ely didn't exactly come out unscathed. Ishida allocated 4 double spreads for this epic fall. Some of the sheep definitely should have died from that spectacular accident.

At first, Ely was smug about escaping the sheep. But then, I think she was moved by compassion and I think she hurt herself in order to revive the sheep. I just wonder though, how she learned to do that?

Because of her transformation, the whole area was engulfed with smoked and I think the sheep were effectively revived. It was kinda confirmed that Ely was responsible for keeping the casualties to a minimum. Here we go again with Chandra's "fancy gentleman" facade... Even the way he talks is fancy ("I am well-acquainted with the roads here") but more than that... he's self-important. I talked about my other views on his character on Reddit. I get the impression he's something of a "Choujin supremacist", you know what I mean? So, he wants to kinda recruit Ely into his organization or whatever.

So we see that Ely is further introduced as a good character, standing up against Chandra and rejecting his offer to be his pupil or something. Ely was clearly upset about the grandma getting hurt (did she die? I hope she didn't) and made it clear she would never join him. Chandra takes offense at this rejection, especially when Ely said Chandra is worse than a turd.

As Chandra tries to inflict pain on Ely (something about marking her on the face), she recalls her resolve from Chapter 1: drones for farming, a greenhouse, her grandpappy, a mansion, the big dog, paying back the kid for his roller boy yay-yay, the Goldilocks hubbie, nine kids... But just before we can see if she can fight Chandra off...

Is the aptitude inherent or something you can acquire? If so, what does Tokio have that Azuma doesn't, especially since everyone thinks Azuma is "better" than Tokio in all aspects?
