oh god I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been trying to get used to twitter as a fandom base for so long because everyone else was like „it’s sooo much better than tumblr tumblr is hell“ and I’m like .... what?? where ???? There are the same fucking people on twitter and tumblr but at least tumblr has tags you can just block. Also I always miss when people are posting new art but maybe I’m just too stupid for using twitter
Yah I feel like in part it depends a lot on habit, I’ve been on tumblr for, like, a decade so I’m really used to its dynamics by now and personally the tagging system is something I rely on a lot, not just to avoid seeing the stuff I don’t like, but also to make sure what I post only reaches those who are interested in seeing it - for example when I post ship art I only tag the ship, never the single characters, because this way I reduce to a minumum the chances of anyone not into the ship seeing and interacting with the stuff I post
I’m finding that tumblr is a lot more fandom divided than twitter is too, so say I post a krbk pic and tag it as krbk, the people who are gonna see it are going to be either my followers (who follow me and wouldn’t straight out be rude in 99% of the cases whether they like the ship or not) or the people roaming the tag who are therefore interested in the ship (or else why would they be in there) - this means that the people reblogging my krbk art are gonna be krbk fans, and the people following krbk fans usually are krbk fans, and if they aren’t and they’re bothered by the ship they have the tag blacklisted since they’re following a blog that posts it, and that means that in the majority of cases a peice of art rarely moves outside of the specific micro-fandom it was intended for if you’re careful with your tags (the fact that people don’t automatically see your likes on their dashboards helps in this too) - twitter on the other hand has no tagging system, everyone can see your likes, and people follow and post a bit of whatever without any sort of logic at all as far as I can tell, which means that if you have enough followersyour piece is bound to end up across people who don’t like it and will feel like they have the right to say so right under it
and maybe that’s what people like about twitter! Everyone’s free to post whatever without caring for tags and stuff (the more people see the thing the better no matter what’s the response? maybe? I dunno man I’m guessing here) but with the way I use the tagging and blacklisting system makes twitter incredibly uncomfortable to use, as a fanartist
