makoto  took  one  last  look  at  the  couple,  she  realized  that  they  spotted  her  son  as  he  was  getting  inside  the  car  but  a  glare  of  hers  should  be  enough  to  send  the  message  that  they’re  not  welcome  to  get  closer,  perks  of  being  a  cop  is  that  her  glare  is  enough  to  show  just  how  much  authority  she  had.  with  that,  she  got  inside  the  car  as  well  and  began  to  drive  away.

hearing  him  talk  however,  made  her  ponder  about  the  things  himari  told  her…  so,  those  were  indeed  her  parents  and  makoto  had  guessed  as  much  since  himari  and  goro’s  features  could  be  found  in  them.  “  yes,  i  know  about  them.  i  already  had  my  own  guesses  on  who  they  were  since  they  have  facial  features  that  remind  me  of  himari…  you  guys  don’t  have  a…  ”  makoto  was  about  to  say  “a  good  relationship”  but,  that  was  not  all  there  was  to  it…  their  relationship  was  non-existent  at  this  point  and  time.

“  it’s  okay,  goro.  i  won’t  make  you  talk  too  much  about  them  because  i  know  how  it  feels  to  have  someone  awful  in  the  family.  after  all,  my  own  grandparents  refused  to  give  me  any  type  of  support  when  my  father  died  in  work,  i  had  to  raise  my  little  sister  on  my  own…  ” a  heavy  sigh  escaped  makoto’s  lips,  she  never  mentions  much  her  own  family…  but,  if  she  intends  to  be  a  part  of  himari’s  family,  it’s  not  okay  to  keep  secrets.  “  i’m  not  proud  of  myself  for  this…  but,  a  lot  of  resentment  build  inside  me  to  the  point  i  hated  my  sister  so  much.  i’m  not  like  masayoshi  and  karasu-kun,  who  despite  the  hell  they  were  born  in  they  managed  to  stay  close  even  so…  i  was  not  a  good  person  to  her,  because  i  was  stupid  and  young  when  i  began  taking  care  of  her  and  allowed  that  resentment  to  grow  alongside  me  as  i  grew  older.  i  hate  my  grandparents  a  lot…  because  they  knew  i’d  have  to  drown  myself  in  part-time  jobs  before  being  able  to  establish  myself  as  a  cop,  they  saw  me  struggling  to  put  food  on  the  table  while  paying  bills  at  the  same  time.  if  it  was  not  for  karasu-kun  stepping  in  to  help  sometimes,  i  don’t  know  if  i  would  have  been  able  to  stay  sane.  ”

makoto  explains  softly,  maybe…  she’ll  give  sae  a  call  after  this,  they  need  to  talk.

It’s a bit of a relief that his moms have talked about it, though... it does feel a bit odd to him that Makoto probably knows more about them than he does but he knows Himari has her reasons. Goro can tell that the topic is heavy in itself, especially so because it’s not even a topic he thinks she’s ever even breathed a word about to Masa, so he won’t push her for details ever on that until she’s ready to talk about it.

His mom knows that they both, being Himari and himself, don’t have any sort of relationship with them. And he knows that’s why she doesn’t finish that sentence, and continues on with something else. Of course, when he realizes that she’s opening up to him, he know better than to comment of interrupt until she finishes what she’s saying. He knows how to listen well, afterall so did his mother, it only makes sense he knows how to as well. And to say the least... he can understand why it had been that way for her. Because he knows what the pain of loss of anything or anyone can do to a person, he’s seen it first hand several times. ...He’s been the cause of it several times. Sure she wasn’t a good person to her then but... she’s trying now and that at least is something to show that she’s a good person at her heart even if she did dumb and hurtful things. Otherwise... his mother wouldn’t have been able to fall so genuinely in love with her. And he’s certain Makoto is making amends with his Aunt Sae.

In relations to that topic... it’s a wonder to him that his mother didn’t grow to resent and hate him because it’s a a fact his birth ruined her chance of a normal life. As much as she may deny... Goro knows it to be true, because if he hadn’t been born, if Shido had never met her... she’d be living a normal life. But, he doesn’t let that much get to him, because there’s no point in dwelling on such things. Plus, his mother is somewhat content and happy with the life she’s led thus far, and that’s enough for him along with the family he’s gained along the way, all of that is far more than enough in all honesty.

“ It’s... nice to know you understand  it. I was... scared to explain it, but hearing everything I... I can tell you about them. You’d understand it, I was more scared of you not being able to understand and... and sounding stupid ‘cause it’s really mama who’s been affect by them the most even if she doesn’t say it. “ It’s hard to admit things like that, he really has a hard time with it but it didn’t feel too horribly world crushing. Not this time at least. “ ...I only met them one time really, I remember they were at first trying to tear mama apart with their words but when that didn’t work... they tried picking apart me as a whole saying that I looked as cursed of a child as they had expected. That I inherited the same “ugly blemishes” that mama has, I think... I started to cry at that point. And that was when I remember mama yelling for the first time, I never did get a good look at her face but her tone was telling enough that she was furious. That was the first and only time I remembering meeting them but that was enough to make me feel anxious at the sight of them. Because god knows how much worse they’d be. And not to mention... they wouldn’t be the most approving of my partners nor that you’re helping Mama raise me, and they’d voice it. And I think that would cause mama to get more upset than she was then, and I don’t want that to happen. And seeing them... makes me think and worry about it happening. “

And knowing their family as a whole? They wouldn’t take kindly to bullshit like that either, let alone try to ignore them like Himari does.

The Way Haru Gets Sentimental When He’s with Rin

This is gonna be a long one, so I put the rest under the cut. There's just so much to say about RinHaru and how they get all cute and sweet when they're together ^_^ Hope you guys enjoy this as much as I did writing it!

So I noticed in the Drama CDs and some of the character interviews that Haru readily gets sentimental when he’s with Rin; you’d think that, sensitive crybaby that he is, it’d be Rin who would initiate the sentimentality, but surprisingly, oftentimes it’s Haru getting all up in his feels while Rin is the chill one.

And coming from a non-expressively sentimental person as Haru, I die and come back to life every time these moments happen because they’re just way. too. PRECIOUS 💜 I don’t know what it is about Rin, but for whatever reason Haru is just more open with his sentimental emotions with him���it’s like Rin brings out the “romantic” in Haru ^_^

For example, from the BD Extra Rin and Haruka Special Talk:

Rin: Yeah, those guys, in the time I hadn’t seen them they’ve become much more senpai like.

Haruka: I don’t really know how to say it but, I feel like our feelings and bonds will be passed down forever……

Rin: Haha, you’ve become sentimental huh?

Haha, Rin even calls Haru out on his sentimentality! Haru randomly texts Rin to tell him he left his water bottle at Haru’s place when they were hanging out with each other. As Haru can’t type to save his life, he ends up calling Rin and they start chatting about the All Japan Selection and the after party. Not exactly a sentimental conversation, and yet still Haru openly gets all tender and feelsy. We don’t often witness Haru get all like this, so seeing him do so in a random convo with Rin is so adorable and really highlights how their relationship is something special (and not just a rivalry like some people try to make it out to be).

We get another display of it in the RinHaru Character Song Duet Series Drama, Track 3:

Haruka: The futon’s over there. Lay it out yourself.

Rin: …Are you even listening to me?

Haruka: Or do you want to sleep together in the bed again like old times?

“Or do you want to sleep together in the bed again like old times?” FOLKS THE WAY I TOTALLY LOST IT WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS DRAMA OMGGG. Haru is canonly offering Rin to share the bed with him. Like they used to before. And Haru isn’t being facetious about it, listen to the way Haruka says this line and you’ll hear how he was 100% sincere in his offer. And Haru strikes me to be the type that isn’t all that touchy-feely, so for him to offer someone to share a bed with him is just…not a normal Haru thing to do. But he offers so to Rin and like PEOPLE. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS ACTUALLY CANON AHAHAHAHA I’M THRIVING XD.

And then on top of “wanna sleep together?” (as if that wasn’t enough death for us), we have a very caring Haru pulling a Mamakoto and asking Rin a bunch of questions to make sure he’s good:

Rin: Oh. Thanks for pulling out the futon.

Haruka: You didn’t bring your pillow?

Rin: As if I would.

Haruka: Will you be able to get to sleep?

Rin: Don’t make fun of me.

Haruka: Are you leaving early tomorrow morning?

Rin: I’ll be waking up at 6 to go for a jog before I go. If I miss even a day’s training, it affects my performance.

Haruka: Then I’ll run with you.

Haru is firing off all these questions to Rin, asking him if he’s gonna be able to sleep without his pillow, wanting to know when he’s gonna leave in the morning, telling Rin that he’s gonna run with him in the morning so he can spend as much time with Rin as he can before Rin even has a chance to offer Haru to run with him. We get a glimpse of clingy!Haru, and the way we see this side of him come out around Rin (is too adorable) says so much. Haru is so involved—and you have to listen to the audio to really experience the way Haru is asking these questions, for you can hear just how concerned about and interested in Rin he is. 

[Haru quietly enters his bedroom. RIN is sleeping]

Haruka: [smiles] Good night, Rin.

This part killed and then resurrected me, omg HOW AM I EVEN ALIVE?? Haru not only takes a moment to smile while watching Rin sleep (you literally hear the pause and Haru’s little laugh in the audio), the way he whispers “Goodnight, Rin” is so soft and caring; Haru sounds so content and happy to have Rin back in his life, just like old times, and it’s too much for my soft RinHaru heart to handle 😩.

​The impression I got from this entire drama cd track is that Haru is just so happy to have Rin back in his life, but not only just back in his life, but back as a friend. After all these years and heartache, they’ve reconciled, reunited, and they’re doing things like they used to back in elementary school. We know that Rin’s friendship in elementary school meant a whole lot to Haru (just watch Starting Days, read High Speed 2 and rewatch all of Season 1 if you want to doubt that), and now the two of them can resume that precious friendship. Haru’s whole demeanor and actions read as excitement, contentment, and a touch of anxiousness that he and Rin and doing things together again like they used to—Rin spending the night at his place being one of those things. 

I’m sure Haru felt a little anxious about it all, similarly to how someone finally gets that thing they’ve been yearning for and wants to make sure it’s taken care of. We see it in his “clinginess”, in the way he offers Rin his favorite t-shirt, in the way offers Rin to share the bed with him; we see it in the way Haru fires off questions wanting to know if Rin’s gonna sleep well and when he’s leaving in the morning. It’s the way someone who lost someone they cherish but gets them back in their life would act—it’s attentiveness and anxiousness, eagerness and contentment and wanting to spend as much time with the person as they can. 

There was also a brief but still very cute Sentimental Haru moment in the Free! Illustration Works CD Drama, Track 8: A Promise of Rainbows

MAKOTO: The four of us swimming together like this reminds me of our days in the swimming club. Like how Rin tried to make rainbows while we were playing in the pool.

NAGISA: That sure brings me back.

MAKOTO: Rin back then was a lot more open about his emotions.

RIN: Lay off it. […]

[(Makoto and Nagisa) jump into the pool, leaving Rin and Haru standing on the side]

HARUKA: Rin.

RIN: Hm? What?

HARUKA: …Make rainbows again, okay? [jumps in]

RIN: Make them?

NAGISA: Rin-chan, come on in!

RIN: …Heh. Okay. I’ll make rainbows for you.

Again, you really have to listen to the audio track in order to fully appreciate the softly tender way Haru tells Rin to make rainbows again. And the fact that Haru waits until it’s just the two of them to say this to Rin makes it extra intimate and special.

Also in the Free! DF Drama Cd, we see Haru’s sentimental side crash right into the party, no invitation needed (Track 10 - Haruka and Rin’s Drive):

Rin: There’s… still another 3 hours until we reach the training camp. You can sleep if you want, Haru.

Haruka: You’re such a rough driver that I’m too worried to fall asleep.

Rin: Heh, speak for yourself.

Haruka: Besides…

Rin: Huh?

Haruka: This is the only time we can talk properly.

You guys already know how I lost my mind over this drama cd track (if you like to witness my meltdown, you can do so here) for this entire drama is everything and more. Haru would rather spend the long drive to “talk properly” with Rin instead of sleeping, since it’s one of the only chances they’ll get. It’s so sweet and shows that Haru does value the time he gets to spend with Rin, whether it’s swimming-related or not.

Haruka: What is it like living in Sydney?

Rin: It’s pretty good. I train with my friends every day, then we go eat after training.

Haruka: So you made new friends there.

Rin: Yeah. There’s David, Chris, Johann, my coach Mikhail, and many more.

Haruka: Were you able to see a sight you’ve never seen before with these friends?

Rin: Eh? I wonder… I probably did see it, but…nothing compares to the sight I saw when swam with you and the others, I don’t think. What about you, Haru?

Haruka: Same here.

So the guys are just chatting about their life in Tokyo and Australia when suddenly, Haru brings up the “sight you’ve never seen before” motif. Both Rin and Haru cherish that “sight” they saw together, the one that Rin promised to show Haru during their first ever relay as a team. For Rin, “Nothing compares” to it and Haru agrees. (Also, can we please appreciate how Haru wants to know if Rin’s new friends can show him that “sight?” Hahaha Haru, luv, your jealousy is showing).

Rin: Let’s nap for an hour?

Haruka: Okay.

Rin: Do you know how to put down your seat?

Haruka: Right here?

Rin: Yeah.

(silence)

Haruka: This reminds me, around this time last year, we slept together like this, Rin.

Rin: Huh? …oh you mean the hotel in Sydney?

Haruka: My whole world changed since that day.

AHAHAHAHA omg—Rin is all, “Great let’s sleep” and after a few moments of silence, Haru’s suddenly goes “REMEMBER WHEN WE SLEPT LIKE THIS TOGETHER IN THE BED RIN??? IT WAS LAST YEAR AND RIGHT NOW TOTALLY REMINDS ME OF HOW WE SLEPT TOGETHER LIKE THIS IN THE HOTEL ROOM” KSSFKSDKDKK I’m CACKLING, omg Haru’s too much 😂 Rin’s tryign to sleep and out of the blue Haru starts reminiscing on RinHaruralia and how they slept together and he wants Rin to reminisce too 😂 Haru’s so sentimental around Rin it’s so friggin precious. And Rin’s just all “YAWN oh yeah…the hotel YAWNS” and I imagine Haru with his hands behind his head, reclining in his seat and smiling up at the stars through the windshield as he says “Yeah and my entire world’s been changed ever since that day we slept together like this Rin.” People this drama cd is too much omg.

Haruka: I want to… swim relay again.

Rin: Let’s swim together. But on the world stage this time! I don’t know what the team will be like, though.

Haruka: Yeah. One day, definitely.

Haruka: Rin?

Haruka: He’s asleep.

Haruka: One day, definitely, we’ll see a sight we’ve never seen before again.

Sentimental Haru is too precious for this world. I love that when RinHaru is together, our sensitive and quick-to-tears shark prince is the one who’s all chill and laid-back while it’s Haru—the prince of bare-minimum expressiveness—is the nostalgic, sappy one. Do you see what these two bring out in each other? They complement each other in such a dynamic and interesting way, it’s lots of fun to watch/hear them together, especially now that they’re friends again (though they’re entertaining to watch as rivals, too).

Not to be a total pain-in-the-ask again (I’ll send something not angstridden eventually) BUT I was thinking about The Perks of Being a Wallflower and came across this quote again:

It made me think of somebody sitting down with Hiyori to really dissect where he stands with Ikuya. He gives and gives and gives, but can it be considered love if that devotion isn’t returned? Is he really being loving if he leaves his own needs out of the equation?

Hiyori and Ikuya are complex characters so I don’t necessarily think that a conversation like this can end with an absolute “they’re toxic and beyond repair” or “there’s love we don’t see behind the scenes that makes it all work out.” It’s just interesting to think about how Hiyori would react to a comment like this. Would he deny putting Ikuya before himself? Would he still consider all of his acts of selflessness to be out of love? Would he outright disagree with the quote/assertion altogether? ~things to think about~

(I think the person who would ask him that is Makoto cos he’s also had to figure out that being completely selfless without getting anything in return does no-one any good!! Also I think they’ve got that sorta relationship now. Also also that’s just who Mamakoto is)

I think after the relay, Hiyori definitely realises that they’ve been on an unequal footing. The way he tells Ikuya to go to his friends, the way he was chilling by himself and lets himself be open with Kisumi, a complete stranger, I don’t think he’d fight the idea at all if someone said it to him. 

But it would definitely make him feel guilty!! Like, his whole life he’s thought that he genuinely cares about Ikuya and above all wants him to be happy bc it’s what he deserves. But was that his motivation for trying to make him happy, or did he want to be the one that made Ikuya happy? And was it Ikuya’s happiness on the line bc he’s a person deserving of said happiness, or because he just happened to be the person who was “his salvation”? 

Hopefully he would realise that he does care about Ikuya for Ikuya, and evolves from that unhealthy “I’ll only be happy if he’s happy because of me” kinda deal that they had before. 

I think these two absolutely have so much space and potential for growth!! No, one relay isn’t going to magically make them see the love that’s right in front of them, nor are they such broken and irredeemable individuals that they’re “beyond repair” because i do think at the end of the day, they both have love for each other (romantic or otherwise! like they’re genuinely friends!!) that got lost in translation on the way. Hiyori thought he could fix Ikuya’s depression by being his salvation, and Ikuya thought he didn’t deserve the love and friendship of anyone so he rejected the only person he still had left. Once they realise this, after a nice healthy break, they can hopefully go back to each other <3

walks rather uneven. He sometimes takes a step too far to the left or the right. He hates it because he accidentally walks into people a lot faster

definitely the kinda guy to immediately stand up for old ppl on public transportation

he and Haru are at the start of a budding friendship. He teaches her to come off as tough and ‘dont mess with me’ while Haru shows him how to be gentle. And they garden together and its adorable

favorite Disney movie: cant decide. He loves all of them. But he really likes Mulan and Treasure Planet 

the sorta person to borrow money often, but always pay back

drew a potrait of Ann once using lipstick. Ann is kinda impressed.

Yusuke doesnt ever have to stand up because he never fucking sits down on trains. Hes the guy who can practically just stand on trains without holding unto anything

we know hes broke. So the guys will sometimes stick a little money into his shirt. God knows this guy wont notice. He thinks he just made a ‘lucky find’

She hadnt had much social contact to people her age. so she isnt always sure if they still like her. The guys show how much they love her at any given opportunity. The few times her smirk fades into a watery genuine smile

her hand is really nice and perfect for bitchslapping.

she also regularly paints everyones nails. She wasnt that good at that actually. So the willing nails of her friends make perfect practice

the kind of person who wants to borrow books she wants to read from friends and take forever to read and return them after she gave up and just pretended to have read it.

- Makoto

the person who lends the books

Her legs are a lot stronger than her arms (not that her arms arent) so she does the meanest kicks

During their more frequent sleepovers at Akiras she always brings hairclips to put on all of them while they are sleeping. She just thinks its cute. Of course she takes pictures.

- Haru

the guys often call her after various flowers. Because shes sweet and pretty but depending on the day she can be a poisonous flower as well.

gifts to her often include seeds of different plants. Its sorta a competition to see what she likes the most because Haru’s approval is everything

Haru certainly thinks its very sweet. It helps her because as the last member to join the ranks, and the circumstances of them as well she used to feel left out

All these guys that knew each other a little longer. And then Haru came who just knew of Makoto and Morgana a little. Its indefinitely better now

Sojiro allowed the guys to moderately use the coffee bar when meeting in LeBlanc. Haru uses this opportunity to use her friends as guinea pigs for her coffee.

The other girls are also horrified when they found out Haru doesn’t do anything special to keep her hair it would just.. happen

So then it’ll go like this:

Makoto attends a uni similar to Tadashi’s. He lives with Haru who, after high school, decided to become a chef or something else because he couldn’t set on a specific goal (sorry it’s sad as if Haru never realized his dream in Free! ES)

For the third time that month, Haru comes down with a cold because he constantly submerged himself in water even in chilly weather. Let’s say the season is mid fall where it’s starting to become colder.

Makoto scolds (but not really) Haru for being so careless with his health. Haru says he was fine but Makoto reminds him that he had a fever the night before. Haru does not care probably because he is already better.

Makoto goes on to mention how stubborn Haru is when it comes to self-care. This reminds him of a project idea and uses the situation at hand to explain his reasoning.

Makoto worries about Haru and tells him what were to happen if he was suddenly gone. So then Makoto reveals his plan to create a healthcare companion or basically a nurse bot to care for Haru when he is not there. Haru is unclear as to what “not there” really means, long or short term and becomes worried it’s foreboding.

He dismisses it all and thinks this is a nonsense idea because he is confident that Makoto will forever be by his side since its always been that way. He doesn’t say this but Makoto could tell. He wonders if he’s pampered Haru too much and is his fault he turned out this way.

So Makoto continues nagging, repeating how Haru is always so stubborn when he gets sick and what will happen when Makoto isn’t there! He reminds Haru of the time in junior high when he fainted because he was not eating properly. Haru glares at Makoto for bringing the incident up and huffs.

Eventually Makoto gets Haru to agree to the idea when he compromises that the bot will be of soft material and be capable of turning into an inflatable pool to cool down in case of heat stroke scenario.

Haru still sets some conditions however, making Makoto sigh but agrees.

1. It will be made in resemblance of Makoto if it’ll care for Haru

Makoto whines at the request because he tells Haru that he plans on making more to help other people as well. Haru does not listen and continues with his list

2. It’ll be named after Makoto

Makoto sighs again but admits that he was having trouble with naming his project.

3. It’ll sound like Makoto

Haru argues that Makoto has a gentle voice, being a bit embarrassed having said this without much thought.

Luckily all Makoto could think of is the numerous voice recordings he’d have to do. He feels like this may be getting out of hand but he glances over at his best friend.

Haru had drifted off into thinking about the new Mamakoto nurse and his face lit up.

There was no way Makoto was going to back down now. He cared very much for Haru and promised himself to always keep him safe. He does not yet realize his feelings for Haru (which I find is super cute, making Makoto a bit obtuse).

Haru catches him staring and frowns a bit. He is embarrassed but keeps his poker face.

Makoto smiles his signature smile at Haru and promises that he’ll put it all into the new project.

They stare at each other lovingly with shining eyes but then Haru breaks the moment by saying it’ll be named Mamakoto.

Makoto begins to whine about how embarrassing the name is when they connect it to the name of the inventor. Haru comes up with BaeMako (a name resembling "Baymax") and seriously considers both options.

Makoto whines once more but sees there is no stopping the other and gives up all together when Haru ignores his pleas and goes to consult their cat about the names.

I really want to draw this out in the near future! I’ll probably start to make a draft tomorrow.

How would Rin, Mamakoto (sorry), Haru and my little and adorable Kisumi react over a girl that can put he in his place, being a little bit "aggressive", not having fear of him, but having her sweet side? I love your blog! Kisses from Brazil!!

Haru is amazed that she could be sweet and tough at the same time. He never had to worry about her that much because he knew very well that she could handle herself pretty well. 

Makoto loves just how independent she could be. There are times that she likes to ask him a favor and he was always more than glad to do it for her (as long as it’s not weird and hard for him to do) He adores her sweet side so much and he always does his best to not get on her bad side. 

Rin thinks that she could be a little mean sometimes, that World War 3 occurs when they’re having an argument. Afterwards though, he’s glad that she’s forgiving and she makes it up to him. He always does the same in return, and shows her just how appreciative he is of her. 

Kisumi always avoids to get on her bad side because he hates having to argue with her. He loves her sweet side so much that he practically spoils her so he could see just how adorable she is whenever she gets whatever she pleases.
