i think criticism of tiktok thats based around tiktok as this evil force that exists independent of every other thing is unhelpful discourse because it tends to place the blame for problems exacerbated within tiktok on the app itself, which, as much as i can talk about my own bad experiences on the app, is ultimately a flawed idea. the culture of behavior we see displayed on social media among young people should be understood as a microcosm of whats happening in society at large, and with this understanding we can actually productively search for what lies at the root of it all. i think the reason we get so many simplistic perspectives is because it's easier to blame an app than it is to do this kind of work when the source is more often than not something incredibly ingrained into society. like capitalism. like you're mad at capitalism and mass surveillance. that's criticism i ultimately find more interesting.
#hopefully coherent ... i do not like tiktok at all and have what i think may be an extremely minor trauma from the way I conditioned ->#<- myself to be constantly observed when i used that app but the thing about that is conditioning yourself to be observed is something ->#<- that is part of the existence of being perceived as a woman in a capitalistic society. which is the actual thing i want to be attacking.#just have clarity of purpose in your activism. i find it deeply untrustworthy when the blame is placed on one thing like this.#it speaks!
