ships i like and why i ship them: a small, affectionate rant before bed

zhongchi: probably the first ship i ever interacted with. i may have started playing genshin for them. I specifically remember reading modern, non canon au fics on ao3 when i was still low AR and did not have liyue unlocked yet just to enjoy content of them without spoiling the story too much. those were good times

love the betrayal, the reciprocated manipulations, their individual bloody pasts and their juxtaposing love for humanity/family. the marriage chopsticks. god, the amount of threads I've read explaining those... and ofc you can't forget the official art with them by the harbor with the gingko leaves falling cinematically. i think that's the art that drew me to them lol

there's also something so deliciously tragic about a near-immortal being who's fated to succumb to erosion in due time, falling in love with a mortal man who's always within death's cold embrace. not to mention the subtext of their themes and principles. geo and hydro, stability and turbulence, land and sea, they crystallize when they meet in the middle, etc etc

kaeluc: another pairing I enjoyed the absolute shit out of, way back when I wasn't even playing the game yet. I remember learning about them while I was deep in my mxtx phase, specifically tgcf, and I'm pretty sure I dipped my toes in after I learned that they used to be sworn brothers. keywords here being used to. hook, line, and sinker. before I knew it, I was also reading fanfics about them, but only modern, non canon au ones because genshin terms made no sense to me and i didn't want spoilers. then I played the game. and then—we get Kaeya for free. I mained the shit out of that man for months.

and then. I fully entered the fandom, only to be immediately slapped in the face with the mistranslation issue.

and I get it, honestly, if you like ragbros good for you, I'm happy for you, but me personally, I will scorn hyv until the day I fucking die because had they not messed this up? kaeluc would've have been so powerful. KAELUC WOULD HAVE BEEN SO FUCKING POWERFUL

how could they not be? they're childhood friends but they're also forbidden romance coded, and rivals/enemies coded, but they're also soulmates. they don't just know each other, they're two halves of a whole, they know each other.

and the themes, don't even get me started on their themes. fire and ice, red and blue... paimon's line about them being similar (i.e. kaeya's a shady mf who fights in the day/diluc's a bright fire in the night) is one of the most romantic lines ever. they're sun and moon but only because they complete each other. also, lamp grass and calla lily? that's them as flowers, but they're the other person's ascension material like hello???????? fucking wild.

and ofc this kaeluc section can't end without me mentioning arundolyn and rostam. for those who don't know or have read/heard of those names but never really dug deep into it, arundolyn and rostam were knights of favonius around the same time as the cataclysm, and you can read about them in artifact sets such as brave heart, defender's will; and partially from the elegy bow

the reason they're here is because there are too many damn parallels between them and kaeluc to just be a coincidence.

arundolyn was a claymore user (see: ferrous shadow), he was the "lion of light,"; he was naturally gifted in strength but still trained hard and would later become the grand master of the knights; he'd push rostam to drink wine and tell him to have a little fun; he gives up his title and weapon after rostam dies

on the flip side, rostam was the swordsman who created the art of favonius bladework (see: favonius sword), his title was, "wolf pup,"; when he and arundolyn played as children, he was the stand-in for the champion knight of aristocracy; he "ruled the shadows," by protecting mond with ways the knights did not approve; rostam dies in an expedition to expunge the evils poured forth from the cataclysm...

I'll let you connect the dots there. I just also wanna point out, as a final note, that in the favonius sword's description, it says, "the childhood friend and spiritual counterpart of Arundolyn, the Lion of Light, whose name was Rostam, the Wolf Pup." ok. yeah. moving on

xiaoven: i very quickly realized after reading the genshin webtoon that venti was gonna be one of, if not my most favorite character. and i was curious as to who the people wanted to pair him with. keep in mind, this was around 2.0~2.2 I believe, so when I searched them up, the only canon backing I could find was the music scene

and boy, was that scene enough because holy shit, the brain rot these two gave me??? of a god who embodies freedom, and the last remaining yaksha chained to his duty????? they were so thematically opposed and beautiful, it wasn't hard to fall in love with them

by the time 3.0 came rolling in, I've already stopped playing, but that didn't mean i wasn't aware of how we were well fed by canon. from the trailer to venti full on attending the lantern rite and sitting down with the liyue gang; it was one of those interactions that transcended everything

and of course, OF COURSE, they also canonically addressed the fact that venti's music soothes xiao's soul. that's intimate. that's deep. that's so fucking romantic and nice and beautiful in the most tragic way...

also, we can't forget the depictions of god and servant here. the holy themes, the worship. the promise of immortality and foreverness, but also the threat of it. i just think xiao doomed with karmic debt and venti vowed to divine erosion is such a soulmate connection, and I'm also delusional

you are so real for using hecate i just got her (tries to think of a non genshin term and proceeds to fail) friendship level 10 namecard and the secret cutscene she is my CHILD. like EASY 2 core break, plus her ecb lets us have 7 whole people on the field for when theres a rush of enemies too close to the chief. should i finish third phasing eirene? i hate farming for the pharma materials it takes ages and i usually end up using my hypercubes to buy energy because i run out of patience 😭 i already have etti, raven, oak casket, shalom and hecate in the long ranges and i might third phase miss emp too so idk if i should start saving up my discoins and mania crystals for once or just stop controling my impulses. also for me it was bai yi adela and shalom from the start, the switch happened with macchiato and i started mostly using coquelic and ariel instead, and nox because i am not immune to her op burst. so, currently my team just revolves around shalom, bai yi, nox, a healer or two, and then either oak casket or adela given if i have more spawn points to guard or not, but i might have to start benching bai yi because she just hit (tries hard to think of a non genshin term and fails again) to 100% companionship but her 3 controllable core break is just... so handy... i should start focusing on figuring out how to make my laby not die in the first 2 minutes of any battle sigh. also sorry for ranting here lmk if i should tone it down i just end up word vomiting all the time 😭 hope you are having a good day zio-nim!

Could you tell us more about your genshin oc Hette? She seems very interesting and I love her designs!

Hello anon and thank you for asking the loveliest question in existence ♥♥♥

Hette was born to a middle class family of Mondstadt scholars and thus going to Akademiya was never if but when. She started with History of Eastern Teyvat (Mond and Liyue), mostly to follow her father's footsteps because she had no personal preference. That changed when she visited a crossover lecture about flora in ancient records and one sentence about unusual taste of Jueyun Chilies caught her interest to the point she switched to Botanics/Agriculture. She decided to focus on research of how environment and soil affects the taste of chili in order to ultimately grow one of the same taste mentioned in the records. The moment she decided to switch fields is when she got her Dendro vision.

Hette is a pacifist mother hen. She is outspoken to a fault, her way of communicating consists of itchy remarks most people fail to take, so she is not very popular. It lowkey hurts her because she's an exemplary ESFJ, she's a people person, she needs people, is very apt at reading them and good at helping and making them happy. But her pride steps in way too often and though she won't hurt anyone, she's able and willing to burn enemies in heated discussions. It results in her having a tiny circle of people who can deal with her behavior and if anything should happen to them, she snaps, her pacifist side gets suppressed, and she can get even violent to protect them (which she ultimately hates). She also has self-pity tendencies.

Her Dendro abilities are mediocre at best unless she's in her snap phase. But she has a niche ability: unlike other catalyst users who sense leylines and use them, Hette can go one step further, she can mentally enter them. It has no real impact but it allows her to communicate with Dendro slimes (I HC that slimes reside in leylines - you know how they pop up out of nowhere ingame? That's when they manifest.)

Little more of her lore:

Her parents die in a fire when she's just returning for a family reunion, her younger brother Vinn survives only thanks to receiving a hydro vision. Hette is paranoid, worried the fire wasn't an accident and someone was after the whole family so she grabs her brother and leaves Mondstadt. They settle in her late father's think cottage located in Brightcrown Canyon and pretty much start to live as hermits (also meaning she couldn't return to her studies). She fortifies the cottage with vines and uses slimes to patrol the area. Together with Vinn they are getting rid of monsters in the vicinity, including, on three occassions, abyss mages (snap phase needed). Through occurences of the mages (or more precisely the lack of occurences in Brightcrown Canyon) she meets Diluc who becomes their family friend. He also pulls the strings and helps them solve the case of their house fire. After that, Vinn gets a job in the Winery and Hette is finally free to go. She doesn't return to the Academiya but continues with her research in Liyue.

After this there is the core story with Zhongli (it ultimatelly became a study of his psychology throughout the ages where Hette is the catalyst) but I think this post is already long enough :D I'd love to elaborate more but only if you're still interested :)

Toxin’s not the best, but I do think she’d make a good mom. I don’t think she’d ever have a biological child, but she would adopt one. Also, yes, in this fic your dad is another oc of mine, I just didn’t want to say his name. I don’t know how to tag this... so it’ll just be under x reader lol Ok! Happy reading!

You were Toxin’s biological child. You were born in Ebos, but raised in Teyvat. You’d never seen the world you were born in, you never knew your father or the other legends, and you knew nothing of your home.

Your father hadn’t abandoned you, so you never blamed him. And even though you felt out of place, Teyvat was your home. You were raised near Liyue and unlike the locals, you had no vision. Not that you needed one.

You hadn’t inherited Toxin’s poison mastery either, which was something she was happy about. Instead, you’d inherited her ability to harness energy and use it as magic.

You were actually quite sad you couldn’t use poison like your mother, but she kept reminding you that it was quite a dangerous ability, one that had cost her greatly.

Toxin was a really good mother. She took great care of you when you were a child and continued to raise you through your teen years. Once you were old enough, she started to teach you how to harness the magic in the world of Teyvat and use it for yourself.

She even taught you how to fight, and though she was a strict teacher, she was a great one. Since she had been a warrior in the past, she knew exactly how to teach you.

Though she seemed like a villain- and she had been one- she was quite the opposite when it came to parenthood. She was soft, gentle, caring, strict when needed, but never… evil. Since you didn’t live in Ebos, no one could tell you the atrocities your mother had committed.

You let out a scream as your back hit the ground and huffed. You stared at the bright blue sky, breathing heavily as your weapon fell beside you. After a few moments, you sat up and looked at your mother, who didn’t even seem to be phased. 

“You’ve gotten stronger,” she commented as she walked towards you and bent down, holding her hand out, “get up.” You took her hand and she hoisted you up, patting your head as your weapon floated up to her hands. “Is this too heavy?”

“It’s a little heavier than the last one. I was thinking maybe we could redesign it? I wanted to add more (color) onto it.” You suggested with a smile and she nodded.

“Sure, we can do that. But let’s try to make a weapon that’s comfortable before we start adding designs and colors.” You giggled sheepishly thinking back to the previous four weapons you’d designed… and found that didn’t work well for you.

“Right.” Toxin only chuckled as she held your weapon out to you, which you took with a soft “thank you”.

Another thing you didn’t inherit from Toxin was her size. Unlike the hulking 8’2 that she was, you were only (your height). Your father had been much taller, standing at about 10’3. Since you’d never met your father, you had never seen just how tall he was, but you knew this was a shared trait between your parents.

That height was something you always wished you had. Even though your mother stood out wherever she went, it was something about her that you loved. When you were a child, she would carry you in her arms and you could see everything. You didn’t even need to sit on her shoulders.

“Hey, mom?”

“Yes?” She asked, as she started walking back towards your home. You quickly followed her, noticing her slowing her stride so you could keep up.

“Will I ever be tall like you? Dad was really tall too, right?” Toxin nodded and looked down at you.

“He was. But you don’t want to be this tall.”

“How come?”

“It would mean that you were chosen by the Nexus.”

“Isn’t that a good thing though? To be a celestial warrior like you would be amazing! The entire world would know me and I would be so powerful!” Toxin stopped and looked down at you, making you fall silent.

“I was never chosen by the Nexus. My height comes from harnessing too much magic and my body had to make up for it. You father and his friends were chosen.” Toxin crouched down to be close to eye level with you. “Being chosen by the Nexus is an honor, but it’s also a curse. Much like my own abilities. Being powerful… isn’t that great of a thing. Look at where your father and his friends are, the world used them until it no longer needed them.” You frowned and looked down before asking the one question that always plagued you. Of course, you’d asked Toxin numerous times already, but her answer never satisfied you. No matter how many times you’d hear it.

“Will I ever meet dad?” Toxin stood up and started to walk away, her voice carrying to your ears and breaking your heart.

“No.”

You turned around and glanced out into the distance. The sun was going down, painting the sky in orange. It looked beautiful, which added to your sorrow. Although you had a wonderful life with your mother, you wanted to meet your father. Toxin never lied to you about your father, she never hid anything from you relating to your father, and she never sugarcoated what happened to your father. But knowing how your mom was able to come back to life, you always held hope that maybe your father would too.

“Dad… I hope I can meet you one day,” your eyes flickered to the sky, “hopefully before I die… because there’s so much I want to show you here.”

Toxin watched from afar and placed a hand on her chest. If she had the ability to give you what you wanted, she would. She, too, missed him. There were many nights she wished she could see him once more, even for a moment. But the cruel reality of Ebos and the Nexus was something she couldn’t change or fight. If she could, she would’ve stayed in Ebos with you.

“... if I could, my sweet, I would give you the world. I would tear heaven and earth apart for you… but that’s not what you want… and that’s what I’m good at.”

You were still happy, whether Toxin knew or not. Because even though there were days where you missed your father- someone you didn’t even know- your mother had always been there for you. She’d been the one to take care of you and raise you, she was the one who trained you and taught you to use magic, and she was the one who took care of every bruise and cut you’d managed to get. Your father hadn’t abandoned you, but you knew you’d still favor your mom over him.

2day we had 2 spend hours around some1 we don’t like. we also we’re dissociating for half of it, wilbur fronted for awhile to help us out w socializing. overall it waz kinda a blur tbh. we saw sad-its new video which was kewl :] i’m extremely tired zince last night a new alter fronted and decided 2 chug the last of our monster under a minute and left me having 2 deal w the effects of it (which was not fun) usually once every month we’ll be paranoid that we’ll die that night, it’s kinda a long story so i’ll explain later probably :p sorry these posts are always usually short, i can’t remember much even tho i wanna talk abt interesting stuff. Today was nice tho cus we didn’t have school since the braves won apparently. later i’m gonna get ice cream and watch tiktokz and yt maybeee and play genshin and cookie run, hopefully we get to play genshin w my sister!! or hopefully she’ll help us out our led lights on!! :D anyways that’s abt all 4 now! (also random thing whenever i get home from school or a friends house i always see my cat laying on the bed sleeping but she’ll be awake by the time i open the bedroom door, and when i try to lay down or anything she’ll immediately climb on me to sleep just like how she’s doing rn. sad tho cus i have to get to a comfortable spot and unlock the door even tho shes sleeping on me ☹️) bye byezzz

Sometimes I get paranoid that c!Dream is watching me somewhere, our c!Ranboo gets extremely paranoid and anxious when he sees the dream smiley face when he’s fronting which sucks :( but idk right now it feels like someone is watching me ig.

One time when we got extremely sick we tried to drink more water but immediately after we’d throw it up, but at the time we didn’t care and kept drinking it anyways. Somehow it kind of made it as a self harm thing. So whenever we feel like we need to throw up we’re so used to it that when we say “hey i might throw up later, just a heads up” our friends will go “oh my god r u ok? do u need to rest? do you need help?” and we’ll go “no dw it’s fine! i’m used to it” cause i am, with our adhd meds we have to take if we didn’t eat breakfast we’d throw up every morning at school even if it was just some water. Every time we throw up it’s always fuckin painful cause it hurts my stomach and ribs and torso a lil too much which is kinda concerning considering we need to get our ribs checked asap. But either way if we feel nauseous like our head hurts or stomach doesn’t feel good we’re so used to it that it doesn’t phase us, and in fact my head is blurred a lot rn i think cause of the monster that bitch ass headmate chugged last night. So i might try to throw up later even though it won’t do anything. Overall I’ve just been feeling like shit. We’ve been having somewhat “extreme” pains in the sides of our stomach/torso and when we move sometimes it feels like our ribs are moving an organ or something. And sometimes our stomach or bladder (i think?) hurts or like that one word that starts with an “s” i think? i just can’t remember it rn, anwyays basically we have a lot of problems and my mom STILL hasn’t called the fucking doctor when she said she was going to. AND THAT WAS A MONTH AGO!! AND she STILL hasn’t brought us to therapy or tried to fix the payment issues so i cant even talk to my therapist to ask if we can find a new one to help with our disorder!! She doesn’t care about her own children very much unless it’s cooking for us, and she’s made that very clear when she leaves for almost all day and night to go out with her friends or her bitch ass bf. How the hell did she expect our twin to be happy here when she gets drunk of tipsy every weekend??? Also her bf is fuckin weird. He comments on things he doesn’t have the say to, He’s literally been here for a few months and yet he commented on how messy my room was. He was like “yeah you better clean that room of yours cause it’s disgusting” or something like that. LIKE?? SIR. You have no fucking say in my room. Today I’ll be tackling gameplay mechanics and core redesigns based EXCLUSIVELY on my Traveller replaced verse for the terror of the skies and the tyrant of storms himself, Dvalin! Before we get started, let me cover some ground rules for this, and future boss redesigns:

I won’t be changing any boss designs for humanoid characters! If they’re a humanoid character and have a boss battle, I’ll more likely then not write a thread with a certain main or mutual. That way, I can use that thread as reference for how the boss fight occurs in the traveler replaced verse.

It’s exclusive to this verse because I don’t want to erase any of Aether/Lumine’s hardwork! I just wanna do a take based on it! So it’s set in my verse where Sonic replaces them. That way, maybe I can do traveler threads where everyone shares their similar experiences!

With all that out of the way! Let’s dive in! The whole boss fight, including design, mechanics, interactions, and unlockable rewards, and ost’s is under the cut.

DVALIN: THE STORMTERROR NUMBER OF PHASES: 1 BOSS BATTLE MUSIC: X

OPENING CUTSCENE

As Diluc, Venti, Jean and the Blue Blur Sonic himself head to confront the stormterror, they find the dragon in an agitated state. As the forces ready themselves for a nasty battle, the dragon stops dead in it’s tracks, sighting the Anemo Archon. Noticing that it’s more agitated then before, Venti tries to plead with the dragon, who rushes for it. Only for a blue ball to hit him across the face. Screeching to a halt and waving his arms like a lunatic, “HEY!! OVER HERE!!”

The Dragon Roars, hyperfixating on the hedgehog. Paimon, whose situated herself in Sonic’s single strap backpack, screams at him. “OI! OI!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!” Only for Sonic to grin and backpedal, turning and bursting off into a bout of extreme speed with Dvalin in chase.

“Let’s get this party started~!”

THE BOSS BATTLE *Cosmetic Change- This is Sonic’s default design. However, in the Genshin verse, he has a blue and red single strap bag. In all giant animal boss battles that require sonic to run at high speeds, a visual change is made to Sonic’s model. Paimon is situated in his bag..! Showing off surprise and fear at Sonic’s antics.

THE BOSS BATTLE TAKES PLACE like any traditional Sonic Boss Battle, with the Boss chasing Sonic on an infinite loop while he tries to evade until given an opportunity to attack. Dvalin will chase the player on a ruin themed track. The camera starts facing the player, with Dvalin behind. As the lifebar and boss title displays, Dvalin lets out a roar that shakes the screen before zooming out and showing Sonic, who Dvalin is in high speed chase against. Before the boss officially starts, some dialouge kicks in.

VENTI: “Look! On Dvalin’s back! Those must be poisonous blood clots! The abyss order must’ve corrupted the wounds. That’s what’s affecting Dvalin’s mind.” DILUC: “They look intensified... More then by what the Abyss order can cause.” SONIC: “It must be a chaos emerald!”

THE BATTLE BEGINS. The player is finally given control. Sonic controls just like he would in unleashed or generations. On an XBOX controller, the X button gives the player a boost as long as he has ring energy to fuel the boost. Pressing A once gives the player a jump, while pressing it a secondary time while midair gives the player a homing attack, which can hit targeted objects and enemies. The shoulder buttons can help the player sidestep out of oncoming highspeed obstacles. 

More Dialogue can be heard during the battle that can prompt the player on how to avoid oncoming damage. Dvalin will use his tail to smash passing pillars that will cause rocks to fall on certain lanes. On the track Sonic runs on, there are three. The Left lane, the middle lane, and the right lane. Hitting the sidestep buttons (Left and right shoulder / LB RB) allow him to side step into a lane instantly. Jumping does not switch lanes. The first few times that Dvalin smashes pillars, the game will prompt the player to use the sidestep buttons to avoid falling debris, but dialogue can also prompt the player.

PAIMON: He’s trying to hit us with rocks!! Watch out!! SONIC: He’s gonna have to do better then that! PAIMON: Don’t TAUNT!! You Idiot!!!

After a few instances of attacking, Dvalin will speed up ahead of the player, spraying his wind-breath along the way. The player will have to avoid the wind breath and falling debris, or risk losing health. Since there are no rings in Teyvat, Sonic has a life bar instead. However, no rings can refill the gauge, so the player will have too plan carefully at high speeds to avoid attacks, as well as act quickly, or risk losing a life and starting the boss over again.

When sped up ahead of the player, Sonic will have to use the boost to quickly speed up to Dvalin, or avoid more wind breath burst attacks until he catches up to the boss. Then he can jump and use the homing attack to hit one of Dvalin’s three blood clots. Hitting the clot will cause him to crash against the ground and fall back behind the player. He’ll quickly get up and try shaking up his attack routine. The duration of how long he spends attacking the player will get longer and longer depending on how many clots Sonic has destroyed. After destroying the first clot, Dvalin will try to use his feet to poke holes in the road ahead of the player to trip him up. Falling through the holes will instantly cause Sonic and Paimon to die, forcing them to restart the boss. The Player can use the sidestep to avoid Dvalin’s feet, jump over the holes, or race ahead or behind Dvalin’s feet to avoid them.

AFTER DESTROYING THE FIRST CLOT

VENTI: Keep it up! I can feel it! With each clot destroyed, I can feel Dvalin’s connection... He’ll regain his senses in no time! (DVALIN ROARS) PAIMON: If he doesn’t eat us first!! SONIC: We’ll be fine! You’re too small for him to even chew on! PAIMON: Oh, right... Hey!

ATER DESTROYING THE SECOND CLOT

VENTI: Please, Dvalin... Endure... I know this hurts! But it’s the only way! DILUC: He’s getting angrier... are you sure he’ll regain his senses! JEAN: Watch out for his wind breath, Sonic! SONIC: Got it! Two down! One to go!

AFTER DESTROYING THE THIRD CLOT

VENTI: You did it! Dvalin’s senses are returning! PAIMON: Sonic!! Let’s get outta here!! The platform’s giving out!!

ENDING CUTSCENE

After Sonic and Paimon defeat Dvalin, Sonic notices the white chaos emerald lodged in his teeth. Bouncing off of collapsing platform while dashing forward, Sonic dives into Dvalin’s mouth while Paimon screams in confusion. As the platform gives way, Dvalin spits out Sonic... who has the chaos emerald in his hand and Paimon in his other arm. The Dragon catches both Venti, Diluc, Jean, Sonic and Paimon.

As Dvalin flies off, the player is awarded their ranking and score count for the boss battle.

The rest of what is seen is game is still true in the final game, with Venti and Dvalin talking of freedom and little focus on Sonic. Back in Mondstadt, Noelle splashes Paimon and Sonic with a bucket of water to clean Dvalin slobber off of him. Jean exposits about a brighter future as Sonic and Paimon acquire their first chaos emerald out of the set needed to return Sonic home.
