Currently working on a comic with America and Emil going on a totally not lame, not being babysat by Mr. Wong's weird friend at ALL adventure and I have an idea for another thing involving shenanigans with them but I got to thinking today that maybe the second one could also work as a fic. So if y'all feel inclined to share opinions - which would you prefer to see? Comic or fic for the second round of shenanigans involving those two and Emil's chickens cause you know I'm never letting them be forgot 😚😂

I started reading the series this year out of pure curiosity so I'm very new to Warriors. I just finished the first four arcs of Warriors + The Apprentice's Quest and while there are a lot of things I didn't like about the series there's something about it that just makes me want to see what happens. In particular I liked OotS a lot and I'm really looking forward to the rest of AVoS,

My question is: is it worth reading any of the novellas, super editions or mangas as someone who has 0 nostalgia for the series? I have been told that they contradict a lot of things and/or retell things we already saw so they don't sound like a great time. Yellowfang and Hollyleaf are my favorites so far and I heard how bad Yellowfang's Secret was. I considered checking out Hollyleaf's Story but I'm not sure if it's worth my time after hearing all this.

it's a mixed bag and honestly up to what you find personally enjoyable in the series, wc side books have some good stuff and some bad stuff. if you like journey books then you'll like some of these, if you enjoy more dialogue than action then you'll like some, it really is up to preference! my own recommendations would just be to skip whatever doesn't sound interesting to you if you're not interested in reading everything lol but if you would like some recommendations:

for super editions, bluestar's prophecy is a fine book, if you're interested in an in-depth exploration of bluestar's life and a better understanding of some bg characters in tpb then i'd recommend it! while the core conflict and relationships are weak when you think about it, i think it does well enough in selling the situation that you can give it some suspension of disbelief

crookedstar's promise is arguably the best written with great conflict and some great relationships. it's popular for a reason and i think it earns the hype it has in the fandom as a solid book. it's flimsy in some parts but it does better than expected when compared to usual wc books.

i'm tentative to put tallstar's revenge simply because i actually don't think it deserves a lot of the hype it gets lol the conflict is weak, the resolution is disappointing, and jake doesn't get nearly enough spotlight imo however if you like travelling books and want some more books that talk about windclan culture and history, i recommend this one simply for the worldbuilding!

uhhh for more like supplementary reading, firestar's quest is fine (with some creepy romance conflict) and does well enough for what it has to do. i haven't read hawkwing's journey (and haven't heard good things) so i can't comment too much on it but i think, even though i haven't read it, i would recommend tigerheart's shadow as both avos reading and a general understanding of his character for the newer arcs

everything else i havent read or did not like lol

for novellas, i actually enjoyed hollyleaf's story! it's a contained narrative about hollyleaf dealing with everything and if you don't mind a lot of talking and reminiscing with some not subtle writing, it's a decent character piece.

cloudstar's journey is a sombre novella and for that i recommend it, i love the interactions in it and the growing desperation of the characters. if that doesn't sound appealing to you, feel free to skip but if it does, then i recommend!

mapleshade's vengeance aka the scourge of fandom discourse is a fun read, absolutely recommend. it's nothing new or original but it's great to have a protagonist who just fucks shit up.

pinestar's choice another interesting read, pinestar as a character is divisive (for a lot of reasons) but on its own, i think it's really interesting. there's some great moments where he reflects on the clan and i wish there were more moments like that in the series!

blackfoot's reckoning what if god tortured you psychologically with your own memories? very enjoyable even if it isn't that meaningful in the long run

and moving onto the mangas, i actually recommend them all? i love graphic novels, manga, manwha, webtoons, etc. so i'm quite biased towards any visual book and will enjoy myself reading them lol but for more detailed thoughts:

the rise of scourge is a classic for a reason, solid villain origin story.

graystripe's adventure or whatever it calls itself is...fine, it's a fun little adventure trip that gets you invested in graystripe and millie's relationship as well as showing how he got home. if you want a low stakes adventure comic series, check it out.

ravenpaw's path is just a little post-bloodclan adventure for him. if you want to see more of ravenpaw and barley or see what happened to bloodclan after the darkest hour, check this out!

tigerstar & sasha is contentious series, some people like it and others don't. i enjoyed it as a bleak trio of novels, i genuinely feel so bad for sasha :( if you can get past the wonky art then i recommend it!

skyclan and the stranger is...mixed, it's got some nice background designs. if you like gorge skyclan or a certain eclipse antagonist then i'd recommend, just don't expect anything amazing.

a shadow in riverclan has a strong start, a weak ending, and some very confusing characterization if you read the new prophecy after lol i enjoyed feathertail's struggle and would recommend it simply if you want some acknowledgement for whatever the fuck happened in tigerclan

winds of change is an excellent standalone manga that highlights mudclaw's perspective during the windclan rebellion in tnp, it's enjoyable and while he's definitely not in the right, you do understand his perspective a little more after it.

exile from shadowclan is one i'd recommend just for the art, the way james barry utilizes shadow and the landscape is great and i found myself looking at the pages more for the artwork than the story at times! while it's wonky and has some...really weird choices, i'd just read it if you're interested more in brokenstar's reign over shadowclan.

Hello! I have an art question, if you don't mind talking about art stuff! I'm trying to get better at drawing, but having a really hard time with figuring out how to draw people. I feel like I've made progress with things like animals, objects, etc but I just can't get my drawings of people to improve! You draw people (and everything else tbh!!) so beautifully, do you mind if I ask how you learned to draw them? Or if you have any advice? (( oh my god once again I've written so much I am so sorry! I put a tldr at the end, I couldn't quite go into much detail about specifics because im not quite sure what specifically you would like to improve, but I did try to cover some bases but please don't be afraid to message me with any more info or questions!!! ))

I'm a bit of the opposite where I can only draw people and struggle making progress with everything else lol, I admire you a little bit!! 🤭

People can be hard to capture, because we naturally (subconsciously?) examine them trying to determine things like emotion and im not quite sure how to put it but... health? For most people, its easy to see if someone is tired or sick at a glance. This comes into play when drawing people because we are wired to immediately analyze everything about them and pick up things that are wrong (think of uncanny valley type stuff!)

I often think about something bob Ross said, I dont have the time to hunt it down but what he said was basically along the lines of; he prefers painting scenery, because when we see a scenic painting its easier to think "this looks like somewhere ive been!" And its more believable. Meanwhile, its hard to capture the exact likeness of someone. If its a little off, we feel it looks "bad". I may have changed or added some points in there, but I think that was the general idea? 🤔 thats not to say scenic paint is easy in any way, its just about how we view it.

My point in this is, the key to drawing people is to create a believable figure. And how to achieve this depends on the style you draw them in ! I can only offer advice for stylized drawings (i struggle to draw hyper realistic people, and I also just don't enjoy it? Lol) but im assuming that since you like my art you're okay with that? ^^

In regards to how I learned to draw, well.. ive been doing it since I can remember ^^; I grew up watching anime which definitely altered my style and interests, and when i was in high-school I transitioned from an "anime adjacent " style, to a generalized "stylized" look, and now I strictly use photo reference which has helped make my style less cartoony but it still shares cartoon elements I feel? For a long time I drew without using references at all which im sure also contributed to how I draw things now. I havent had a chance to take art classes, so I've learned mostly by self study. Practicing drawing from reference, looking up tips and tricks youtube videos, watching other artists work and looking closely at their pieces to try and see how they achieve certain looks. Eventually it all adds up! How i draw people is a reflection of like 20 years of this!!

My biggest regret is not taking art "seriously" and going nearly all of those 20 not properly studying. This is my biggest piece of advice :^( unfortunately, im still learning how to do this myself, I think "studying" is a learned skill and hard to do without instruction. But if you can draw animals and objects I think you probably know a little bit on how to. So then looking a bit deeper into "improving", what about your drawings do you feel are lacking?

Circling back to my earlier paragraphs, how you want to improve depends on what sort of style you are going for and the way you want to portray or capture people. Portraits rely on technical skill i think. I'm not sure i could offer valuable advice here..

Comics, manga, and graphic novels sole intention is to tell a story through drawings. They don't give metaphors (usually!! Sometimes they do but not in the context im trying to explain) and/or tell us how characters are feeling, they show us! This is why the art styles of them often have exaggerated features, and simplified features. The eyes tend to have more detail because we read eyes for emotion, mouths are exaggerated because they are key to reading emotion (most importantly so I think! Watch: 🙂☹ the only difference is the mouth, but we can tell they feel totally different emotions.) Noses in comparison are usually more simplified as they, out of all features of the human face, are the least expressive.

If you want to improve your drawings of people so that they are more expressive and relatable, I would try to analyze how your face changes with emotion and perhaps practice with one of those emotion chart meme templates!

Illustration work is similar, but I feel the face doesn't actually matter as much. If you look at full bodied illustrations of people and zoom in on the face, you'll find that they are sometimes quite simplified! When viewing a full bodied person we generally take in the body's language first. It would take me a long time for me to explain in detail on this post (though I would love to talk about body language in illustration please let me know of you would like me to... also the body language of two figures.. but ill spare you for now ♡) I would recommend gesture drawing and timed studies. I improved drawing so much when I started doing this (I use the site quickposes a lot, set a high timer and draw!!) If drawing the face is hard for you and you can't seem to get anywhere, try focusing on the body for a little bit! Especially how bodies look when bending and twisting.. which might sound random, but I think it helps get a better understanding on how proportions can change with pose.

I wrote so much and I really didn't mean to. Its always hard to answer questions like this without much information like what your goal is and what look you want to achieve. I hope I didnt scare you away with my horrible novel of an answer but if you'd like to give more detail or ask any more questions please I welcome you to!! great q, thanks for asking. well the series and all its parts are named for lyrics from turn! turn! turn! (to everything there is a season) which is a great song, and also a great title, and also just very lyrically rich. when i was writing the second part, i had most of the third part in my head but hadnt written even a single note down. (partly cos i wanted to see all of s3 first, to be able to react to any strange new plots or changing dynamics.) and i was just thinking through the lyrics trying to work out what would be a good title, preferably in line with the other two, and then i realised a. duh and b. it actually doesnt need to in the same format you can put the brackets riiiight there, and then a spent a lot of time cackling to myself.

instinctive, mostly! i write the way i write bc... it’s the way i write!

bc i love their stories and their writing, and bc (although they write very differently) the number one reason for all 3 is their beth characterisation.

i increasingly kind of feel like rio characterisation is actually easier in a lot of ways bc he’s more of a blank slate that you can project onto, whereas we know a lot more abt beth AND it can be hard to pull all those strands into a coherent picture. i like the way that they all write her as...pointy! but like... not without care? and i always find their characterisations of her extremely believable, as well as detailed.

also! they’re all capable of doing a LOT with few words which is, like, hard!

Uh ok. Well, you asked and you shall receive - beware of a loooong post incoming lol. I could talk about RF for days and no one I know plays it so you’ve really opened the floodgates here haha

So full disclosure I’ve actually only had one rune factory spouse thus far and it was Doug! I got… a little too attached the first time I played (4 was my first rune factory game!) So I decided to try to complete the shipping list in my first save file (still have not accomplished that…) and played for just. Hours and hours and hours. And never actually got around to a second playthrough. When I first started, I had thought I might marry Vishal bc hes just so sweet but then Doug ended up stealing my heart (what can I say, hotheaded redheads/dwarves with a heart of gold and a tragic backstory are my weakness). So yeah, he’s definitely my favorite bachelor in 4. I also dont think it’s necessary for my enjoyment of a marriage option but I really liked how his whole deal was connected to the plot. I went into the game totally blind on the whole thing aside from having looked up the basic profiles on the bachelors/bachelorettes and I somehow didnt notice on my own so I had no idea that his FP was locked by story events until after the fact, but I loved how the plot was tied to him allowing himself to open up more. In a matter unrelated to the plot, and definitely dumbly cheesy, I found out about how some people had trouble with getting the random events and stuff required for marriage right around when I was getting ready to officially decide who to pick (tho it wasn’t a hard choice for me at that point) and I literally got all of Doug’s events so, so easily. I didn’t have to do any of the dreaded reloading tricks or anything, and even though I was also technically dating Vishnal and Arthur, Doug was the first one I got all the events for and the first marriage event to just happen naturally in-game, so I’d like to think it was just meant to be (lol). I’d love to someday play through as Lest as well and finally romance one of the girls, maybe Forte or Dolce… or Xiao Pai… these games have TOO MANY great characters in them I swear, it makes it hard to pick just one!

I have played a good portion of 3 as well, but I wanted to get everyones events done, esp the wooly reveal events, and I’ve just been so focused on other things, I guess, that I still havent finished it - heck, I havent touched it in like 7 months :( I should really do that actually… Anyways, 3 is going to be hard for me to pick a spouse bc, again, there are so many good characters. I think I’m leaning Raven not necessarily bc she’s my all around favorite but because weirdly I ship her the most with Micah? I’m not sure if that’s how you’re supposed to play these games but one thing I really value with the Rune Factory series in particular over, like, Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley, is that the protags get to BE characters, and not just cardboard stand-ins!!! I know they’re mostly written fairly neutrally so you can play how you want, but they all *Definitely* have their own quirks and I absolutely love that. Theres certainly a time and a place for self inserts but honestly I personally tend to find myself more drawn into a game when the protagonists have their own stakes in the world besides I, The Player, Am Playing A Game In A Fantasy World That I Do With As I Please. Even if it’s just in what sort of dialogue choices you’re given or something, which HM/SV also dont really have as much of. (Cough unless the game in question is Animal Crossing. I guess they’ve really got me there. Cough) So, not that I dont like Raven in her own right, but I just really love their whole plotline together? RF3 does a really great job with character growth that, coming from someone seeing the series in reverse, I think RF4’s system of town events kind of mitigated, with the whole randomness factor meaning they couldnt link as many characters to any one overarching series of events. And I really love how Raven and Micah’s events go and i think ending them in romance is just super sweet. It should also be noted that I AM a sucker for a quiet-badass-who’s-sort-of-sassy-in-a-blink-and-you-miss-it-way x literal-sunshine-and-everyone-loves-them-and-they’re-always-in-everyones-business dynamic, for sure. As far as my actual favorite rf3 bachelorette, I think maybe Marian might take the cake? She’s so wacky and out there but her whole insecurity thing really touched me. That might change whichever way the wind is blowing on the day you ask me, though. To be quite honest with you, I fell hard for the whole town of Sharance and I could probably write essays on every single one of the marriage options in 3. Also though, I ended up shipping like all the bachelorettes with each other, sooo��� my bad, Micah, my bad, lmao.

I also own Tides of Destiny, but my Wii started freaking out not long after I got it and I usually prefer to play handheld games anyway, so I started it but I never got too far. Someday I’ll play it. (I’m really hoping to get my hands on 2 sometime soon though because the idea of marriage rivals is SO up my alley - I’m sure it’s a pain to program but I wish more dating sims would do that!!! Maybe it’s just bc I’m someone who loves to ship just as much if not sometimes more than to see my own playable character have their romance play out, but I think it’s a super fun idea and makes the whole thing more grounded in the setting, that things can happen and relationships change outside of the protag’s involvement, too.)

So yeah. GREAT questions, my friend. I do love farming sims and non-NSFW dating sims in general and add onto that dungeon crawling and monster taming??? Plus it has a plot (even if it’s an albeit fairly simple one)?? Rune Factory really has it all, man. BUT if I’m being totally honest I think the best part of Rune Factory for me has always been the characters. I dont know how they manage to make the towns feel so alive and balance out all the personalities so well but they’ve really got it down.
