The Juno spacecraft made a recent flyby of Jupiter and some of the photos it captured are absolutely gorgeous! Here are a few NEW photos. We will add more photos to this post.

My step-brother is graduating from high school soon, so I wanted to make him a little present. He had said Jupiter was his favorite, so I decided to set up a little scene for him as congratulations for all his hard work!

Apart from Amalthea, Io is visible towards the right limb of Jupiter, and Callisto is visible on the far left just a bit above Amalthea's landscape.

What the fuck happened that we stopped giving Moons, planets, stars, etc., pretty names and instead we started calling them bar codes?

Juno flew within 930 miles AKA 1,500 kilometers of the volcanic surface. Scientists have been viewing Io for decades but this is the first time the moon was viewed from close up.

Lakes of Lava with islands of solid rock are shown in the pictures.

Jupiter has 3 other Galilean Moon Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

Juno has revealed volcanoes and Loki Patera lake of lava on Io.

Juno will fly closer to the North Pole of Jupiter and observe tornadoes the size of Earth's continents. They are also looking for signs of water on Jupiter measuring Hydrogen and Oxygen gas.

What fascinates me most about this ugly moon is that it holds the key towards expanding humanity into the outer planets—& beyond!

The Human Future: A Case For Optimism

Great video by Melody Sheep which presents three futures for humanity:

Extinction

Stagnation

Transcendence

Extinction is always a possibility, but humanity could survive (& potentially bounce back) if reduced from billions to millions.

Personally, I believe humanity will expand to the Moon in the near future, & Mars by the end of the century, & the moons of Ganymede & Callisto (orbiting Jupiter), as well as Titan (who orbits Saturn).

As far as large space stations go, I am skeptical of them ever being built due to the economics & competing real estate of terrestrial planets, dwarf planets & moons (as terrestrial worlds will be easier to build upon).
