My favorite casting choice in Moeyo Ken was Suzuki Ryohei as Kondo Isami, by the way. They obviously tried hard to choose an actor that resembled the real Kondo, even though his portrayal (the portrayal of Kondo in the movie, not Suzuki's acting) was at times disappointing.
I didn't actually like Okada Jun'ichi as Hijikata Toshizo (sorry), even though he's the main character the plot follows in Moeyo Ken. Nothing against Okada at all: there are plenty of other films I love him in, like Eien no Zero and The Fable, but he doesn't really work as Hijikata for me. I can't quite put my finger on why, though.
Yasui Junpei as Yamanami Keisuke was also a miss for me. Not just because he's so much older (but that's an ongoing casting gripe for Japanese period pieces for me) but also because his only function in the movie is as an antagonist to Hijikata. Like most of the background characters, we don't get to know him or his relationships with the others, and that makes it difficult to view him as anything besides a plot device. We (the viewers) never really understand why we should care about Soji's attempts to keep the peace between Hijikata and Yamanami, or about Yamanami's seppuku.
Some casting choices I did like were Yamada Ryosuke as Okita Soji, obviously, Yamada Yuki as Tokugawa Yoshinobu, and the very small role Murakami Nijiro has as Okada Izo.

Going to spiral on about J-Dramas, anime, and manga for a bit, so I’m going to stick it under a read more. :D
I’ve really been enjoying Gokushufudo (The Way of the Househusband) live action series.
And I was excited to see that Yasui Junpei was in it since he was also in the live action Kuragehime TV series (probably one of the best, if not the best live action adaptation of a book series I have ever seen - though I may be biased since I love the book series so much), but also, in episode five, there was a cameo from Ohara Yuno from the live action adaptation of Yuru Camp. I think she is so cute and adorable and I was so excited to see that she made an appearance. :)
Anyways, seeing her reminded me that soon season two of the Yuru Camp anime will start, but not only that, there is an anime film and second season of the live action series in the works as well.
Yuru Camp is one of my favorite iyashikei series and it is such a soothing series to read and watch. It does fall into the cute girls doing cute things category of Japanese media, but thankfully it isn’t to any detriment. The characters are treated with respect, and I haven’t noticed any lewdness that is sometimes present and pretty disappointing in a lot of those style series.
I wish that live action Japanese shows were easier to access. I think it is a shame that while anime has had leaps and bounds in how fast and easy it is to legally access, and similar things have happened with a lot of Korean live action series, there isn’t really an option outside of piracy to watch a majority of Japanese live action series.
If you took the time to read this, thanks for hanging in there! If you are interested in watching any of these let me know, I can probably help you find ways to access them.
