Kenma x gn!reader
Summary: Life is falling into place for you: a spacious apartment, a good job, a healthy routine. That is, until you meet your neighbour—and the man is an asshole.
Content warning: time skip setting, manga spoilers, angst with a happy ending, alcohol consumption, mention of vomit, avoided sexual assault, swearing
Words count: 7.9k
Life feels like it’s falling into place. You have a new apartment in central Tokyo, in a building you used to admire when you were younger—one that made your neck ache from staring up at it. You’ve also started your own company, opening an architect's office that has been rewarding and you’ve made yourself a name in the field.
“What about your love life?” Your grandma asks.
And there it is—perhaps the one area of your life you’ve been neglecting. Well, that and your social life in general. Your work takes all your time. On the weekends you’d rather work or go to the gym or meal prep. Anyway.
“I don’t have time.” You answer casually. You always answer that.
Despite hearing this response hundreds of times, your grandmother still doesn’t seem satisfied. She hands you a box of miso soup and a bag filled with fruits and vegetables.
You chuckle, “thank you obaa-chan.
“Are you sure you don’t need ojii-san to help you move?”
She points to your grandfather, asleep on the couch. That one couch that looks older than you and that you’ve seen your whole life. You often complain about the several holes and stains on it, but deep down, you know you would cry if they ever decided to get rid of it.
You put on a polite smile, “I think he needs to rest.”
The bag of food is well settled in your bike's front tray and when you start riding, you take a last glance at your grandmother waving from her window. You smile.
It’s only an hour by train, one and a half by bike, from your grandparents’ to your new apartment. Now that you have enough money and don’t have to live in a cramped studio that oddly looks like a garbage room, and with the university loans finally paid off, you chose to stay nearby—to be close to the family who raised you.
Your parents moved abroad when you were in junior high and they gave you a choice, which was probably the only time in your life that they listened to your opinion. And you wanted to stay in Japan, stay close to the two people you loved the most in the world. Your obaa-san and ojii-san, in their eternal kindness, sold their house in the countryside and moved to Tokyo so you didn’t have to change schools. You never told them, you guess because you were too grateful for what they did, but you wished you had left this obnoxious city, you wished you had grown up in their old wooden house instead of that tiny two-room apartment they brought—probably worth a lifetime of their work.
And the funny thing is, no matter how much you dislike the city, you stayed—for university, and now for work. The gods have a strange sense of humour.
You reach your apartment faster than expected. Outside, a few cardboard boxes are waiting for you alongside a team of sturdy men to help you lift them. You want to believe you could handle everything yourself, but after the first three trips between the sixth floor and the moving truck, you are overwhelmed with humility.
And remember, now you have the money to pay for this type of service.
You’ve struggled enough when you were younger—isn’t it finally your time to enjoy life?
The movers are surprised when you hand them generous tips with both hands. They bow a few times in gratitude. You want to tell them that you know what it’s like to have physical and tiring jobs like theirs, your grandfather has been there too—carpenter, brick mason, plumber, gardener, selling fish on markets from early morning.
Once they’re gone, you start to unpack everything. You keep a notebook with you to note down what you need to buy—extra sheets, dishwashing detergent, another glass of wine (if you ever invite someone over, the idea makes you cringe a little because gods know when that will happen, you don’t cross out the word anyway).
The first evening in your new place is… special. It’s quiet, spacious, clean in your living room, everything that you’ve ever dreamed of. You decide to open a bottle of beer and turn on your computer.
You still can’t believe you have a proper room where you can work, an office at home. It’s beyond what you imagined when you graduated from university.
It’s 8 p.m on a Sunday but you think that preparing for the week ahead won’t kill anyone. So, you sit down at your desk and check your emails.
The calm only lasts half an hour.
The first scream rings out, startling you so much that you almost choke on your drink. It takes a few seconds for your heart to return to a normal rhythm.
It is unusual. Absolutely, not like the screams in films. It doesn't sound like a woman’s scream, nor like someone needs help. Still, you ponder whether you should take a look outside or not.
You’re about to finish writing an email when you hear the second scream, followed by thud of a fist hitting a table. This time you’re convinced of two things: first that it comes from the neighbour next door and second, that neighbour is raging over something.
A million scenarios play out in your mind. The worst-case scenario is that someone is being hurt—perhaps a child or a partner. If that’s the case, you can’t stand by and do nothing.
Barely a minute passes before you find yourself standing outside the neighbour’s door.
You don’t know where the courage to stand here comes from because when it’s time to knock on the door, all this courage disappears. What if they are drunk? What if they beat you up in return? What is your company going to become if you go to the hospital? What if you never see your grandparents again?
“D’ya need something?”
A low voice coming from behind you asks and when you turn around, you’re faced with a tall man with dark hair.
“I-”
He smirks as he crossed his arms over his chest and waits for your answer.
“Are you a fan?” He finally questions when the silence stretches for too long.
You blink, confused. “I heard screams,” is all you manage to say.
The man's reaction is anything but predictable.
He bursts into laughter—a loud and weird laugh, that you decide not to comment on.
“Ah, Kenma is probably playing LoL again. I told him to quit. It’s bad for his heart.”
Every word is said too fast, too casually. “Kenma? LoL?”
“You’re the new neighbour?” The stranger ignores your questions. Maybe you’ve whispered them.
“I am.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll tell him to keep it down,” he says, already turning toward the door.
“Thanks… I guess.”
“I’m Kuroo Testurou by the way.” He calls over his shoulder as he steps inside the apartment. You simply say your name in return before he adds, “have a lovely evening.”
And just like that he's gone and you're left here, confused.
At least the screams have stopped, and you know the name of the person next door. It’s better than nothing and you won't end in a crime documentary about a murderous neighbour.
You go to bed early that night, hoping that this was the last time you would get interrupted working.
It turns out, you get interrupted every evening. The wall separating your office from the neighbour room is paper-thin. It makes you crazy.
Some nights it’s screams of anger, other it’s just uninterrupted chatting. You can ever hear the incessant clicks of keyboard keys.
You want to convince yourself that you can handle the situation, but when you start having dark circles under your eyes, when you pour orange juice instead of milk in your coffee, when you don’t turn to the right street to go to your grandparents house and arrive an hour later to their lunch, your obaa-san starts worrying about your heath (both physical and mental health).
“It’s been two weeks since you’ve moved,” she informs you as if you didn’t know when you started being woken up every hour of every night. “And you’ve been acting weird, my love.”
“My neighbour isn’t the quiet type.” It’s the first time you explain the situation to her. You don't want them to burden them with your problems, but fatigue brings out some honesty in you and the words leave your mouth before you can register them.
Logically, she advises you to go and talk to them. “Be kind and explain calmly that you work from home and need to rest because your job is very demanding,” she says. She can’t help but speak with pride when she mentions your work, and you want to smile. But you don’t because all you can do with your mouth is yawn.
“I’ll go if they don’t stop.” She thinks she looks terrifying with her pink apron and her pointed finger. You get up and kiss her cheek.
“I’ll do it, don’t worry.”
You’ve depended on them your whole life, you won’t bother them again.
It’s strangely silent that evening and with a heart full of naivety, you believe you will finally have a good night of sleep. But before that, you need to work on a very important project, one in collaboration with the city hall, probably the most important of your career so far and that you won against renowned architects’ companies. The first sketch is done, and you can start doing the 3D model now.
That is until you hear the neighbour talk and talk and talk.
Enough.
You don’t even check your reflection in the mirror or bother changing into a decent outfit. You simply grab a jacket, put your shoes, and this time, you dare to knock on the door.
You must have been very insistent or perhaps the knocks were loud enough to drown out whatever music or phone call he was listening to—because after three or four sharp taps, he finally emerges from his cave.
The man is nothing like you imagined. Long hair with remnants of blond colouring, yellow eyes narrowed as if annoyed. He is not small but not as tall as who you assumed was his friend. His attitude reminds you of one of those nerd boys you avoided in high school, though you would bet he is around your age.
“Huh?” Comes out of his throat.
Your hands clench into fists at your sides when he doesn’t even greet you.
“Good evening.” You try not to bark. You need to be the mature one here otherwise he won’t be receptive. You’ve learned that from dealing with arrogant old men in your job. “I am your new neighbour; I live next door. It’s a pleasure to meet you but I was wondering if you could talk a little bit less...loudly.” You remember the points your grandmother has given you and it’s all you can think about (apart from insults and words you might regret), “I am working from home so it can be hard to focus with your chatting.”
His face turns into furrowed brows and a wrinkled nose. You're pretty sure you hear a sigh escaping his nose. He avoids your gaze and when he meets your eyes again, the annoyed stare has disappeared, and he looks blank again. He's unreadable.
“Sorry. I will be careful from now on.”
His words sound as scripted as yours. A knot in your stomach forms and the palms of your hands start to sweat.
Why in the world does this asshole seem annoyed when you’re the one who hasn’t been able to sleep and work for freaking days?
“Is that all?” He dares to ask.
“I hope it will be.” You threaten with pursed lips and your chin lifts a little.
“Fine.” He mutters and closes the door behind you.
Great. Your neighbour is a shithead.
The gods are unfair sometimes. Life is falling into place for you but they seem to have one last obstacle for you: him. Kenma.
A storm of questions keeps you wake that night, the main one being: what is this guy doing with his life?
Doesn’t he have a job? What is he doing of his days since he doesn’t seem to be sleeping at nights? And how can he afford an apartment like yours when he looks like he just graduated from high school?
Maybe he was born rich—unlike you. Maybe his parents are paying for everything and he just spends the days doing nothing and doing LoL?
What’s a LoL, anyway?
You search the term online and discover it’s a stupid video game. That doesn’t surprise you. Kenma seems like exactly the type to waste time playing video games all day.
You don’t want to play it stupid, but you can’t stop thinking about how detached he looked when you complained (nicely and respectfully). A part of you wants to make him pay, just a little. Your grandma would probably disapprove, but that's fair play, isn't it?
And so, during the day you start putting on music. Musical music, it’s the only genre that helps you focus when you work. You make your phone calls while standing right next to the wall separating you from Kenma. You even move your coffee machine into your office. The closer, the better, right?
Your little revenge lasts a week. You don’t want to be cruel—not that it would matter much, since you assume he’s jobless.
At first, he doesn’t seem to react, but the second you turn off the music and return the coffee machine in the kitchen, the sound of gunfire and monstrous roars make your walls tremble.
You invest in earplugs.
You don’t see him much—which is a good thing. Occasionally, you pass by him in the corridors or the lift. Neither of you speaks. A lazy look from him and a quick movement of your head to avoid his gaze are the only interactions you have. He always wears his hair in a half-ponytail and oversized jumpers, from a brand you don't know and has them in every shade of colour. You almost look up “Bouncing Ball Co.” online but decide you don’t care. You don’t care about anything related to this man. Really, anything.
The other neighbours, however, seem to like him. They smile at him, greet him warmly as if he wasn’t a pain in the ass who plays stupid video games at full volume. You conclude they’ve never had to share a wall with his gaming room.
When you complain about it to your grandparents over tea and sweet potato cakes, your grandfather suggests moving back to their house. Your room, after all, hasn’t changed a bit, with your old drawings and posters still hanging on the walls.
“They should fix the problem, coming back here won’t change anything to the situation.” She says while pouring you another cup of green tea, the hot drink feels good and warms you up, if only a little. “I’ll go talk to that Kenma boy.”
Your grandfather only shrugs, he never wins an argument with her.
“Please don’t,” you beg. Your grandmother does that thing she does when she’s lying—she smiles and closes her eyes.
“Whatever you want, darling.”
You try to stop the chaos by yourself. By trying you mean that you leave notes at his front door (some rather fiery when you’re not in the best mood, others more docile when you have been praised for your work by your peers.)
But the letters pile up, eventually covering the straw mat outside his door. One evening, you hear a child on your floor asking their mother why there are so many envelopes by Kenma’s door. The mother replies, “Oh, those must be letters from fans.”
Fans. This word again. Coming from Kuroo you thought it was sarcasm; the guy looks like he often uses sarcasm even though you don’t really know him, but now it really starts to make you wonder: who really is this man?
When your initial plan doesn’t work, you resort to a more direct approach. Every time you hear noise from the other side of the wall, you pound on it with your fist.
If that rude bastard can’t read a polite note (you fucking said “please”!), he’ll surely understand this.
The only thing keeping you sane is that you’re going away for work for a full week. The train ticket, the hotel, the food, everything is paid by your client and when you finally leave Tokyo you feel a wave of relief. The knot in your stomach that you’ve been carrying for days disappears.
You call your grandma to inform her you’re in the train now.
“Have a safe trip and don’t overwork yourself. Your worth is greater than any project.”
You smile softly, “I know. don’t worry.”
She’s about to hang up, but you interrupt by saying, “And please don’t go to Kenma’s in my absence.”
“Kenma this, Kenma that. It’s always his name on your lips these days.”
You’re glad the train starts moving, you blame the surprise of the movement for the slight skip in your heart, “Bye bye, I’ll call you when I arrive.”
The business trip goes well. You manage to make your voice heard and your opinion valuable. You meet a lot of other architects, some congratulate you for your work, other only glower at you. They envy your position. You’re young, you’re not the child of a well-known person and you still success in everything you undertake.
You meet a man of a year or two your senpai; he’s very polite, smiles a lot and seems genuinely interested in your ideas.
The absolute opposite of your neighbour.
By coincidence, he lives in Tokyo too, and you end up on the same train back. The discussion is easy, mostly about architecture, and you enjoy conversing with someone who truly understands the nuances of your job.
He offers to drive you home since his car is parked near the train station and even if you refuse at first, you finally agree. It’s better than calling a taxi, right? You’re still confused at the fact that you’re the person who sits in a taxi rather than watching them from afar.
You don’t see it coming, the approaches, the undertones. He suggests stopping at a bar, but you decline, you tell him you’re tired, and the more he talks, the more it’s obvious he didn’t offer that ride out of sympathy.
Your throat feels tight, and you start cursing yourself for trusting a complete stranger just because he does the job as you. How stupid.
You finally catch a sight of your apartment complex and even though you liked the hotel room and the calm of it, you’re suddenly desperate for the four walls of your place—no matter how noisy they can be.
“You can stop here,” you tell, perhaps a bit too loudly. You try to make the shakings in your voice away. “Thank you.”
He does as you tell, you’re about to open the door when a cold hand lands on your thigh. A shiver runs through you, and your legs seem paralysed.
“Don’t you want to stay a little longer.”
You can't meet his eyes. “I appreciate the invitation,” you absolutely don’t. “But I really have to go home.”
“Your boyfriend is waiting or something?”
You open your mouth to lie, but the tension in your neck and throat is too strong. In a sudden move, you open the door and babble a “thank you.”
The engine stops and you know he is looming closer to you.
“Wait,” you want to go faster but he whirls you around by taking your arm. “C’mon, don’t be shy. You were all talk on the train, let’s continue the conversation somewhere else. Or maybe you want to invite me over?”
The snicker that tugs at the corner of his lips makes you want to vomit. Just like with your neighbour, you’re done being compliant and if being polite doesn’t work then you might use violence.
“Ah, you’re home.”
You both turn to the voice. The lazy and unbothered voice. Kenma’s voice.
“I brought to make curry, is it fine for you?” He lifts a plastic bag while saying this.
His eyes flick to the man for just a second—brief, almost out of time—but the intensity in his gaze is enough to make him pause, and then, instinctively, take a step back.
“Let’s go,” Kenma tells you simply and you follow him.
He walks behind you, from the moment you step into the lift to when you finally reach your front door. Somehow, you feel safe.
Apologise, thank him. Your mind orders. But your hands can’t stop shaking and your throat is still dry.
“If you need something…” he starts but stops, his gaze shifts awkwardly to the side, as if seeking the right words. “Just knock. On the door or the wall. You seem good at that anyway.”
You’re left speechless when he closes the door.
It takes you a whole minute to find your keys and get inside.
It’s cold. Silent. Dark.
It’s strange how you suddenly feel lonely.
You’ve always dreamed of living in a spacious place like this; but the white walls, the too-cleaned surfaces, the too-tidy shelves are oppressive.
“Ah, you’re home.” Kenma said.
But are you really?
These four walls and you; they’re not warm, not lively.
You curl up in your genkan, your shoes still on, the light still off and you start crying.
You haven’t in months, or maybe in years.
Did you even cry when your parents left? When you’ve been mocked for wearing soiled shoes in school? When your so-called friends called you boring?
You find the strength to shower and crawl into bed. Kenma lets you sleep that night. You close your eyes wondering if he is thinking about you for you are thinking about him.
Kenma is away for the next week, and you wonder what he is doing. You don’t complain about the peace his absence gives you, but you also want to say thank you.
Thank you for two things; of course, for helping you with the man but also for leaving a bento of curry at your doorstep.
I made too much–Kozume Kenma
It is written.
Now you know both his name and family name.
Somehow, the thought makes you smile.
The curry isn’t really good–it’s too salty and the potatoes are too hard. It’s nothing like your obaa-san’s food. Still, you think it deserves an apology for being an asshole with him, not matter how fair you thought it was.
The clean plastic box is waiting for him in your kitchen, wrapped in a pretty furoshiki and when you hear keys and footsteps coming from outside a few days later, you rush out.
“Kozume-san,” you call for him.
“Hello there,” Kuroo answers in its place.
You only notice the tall guy at his side when he speaks.
“Good morning Kuroo-san,” you bow.
“Heh?” Kenma raises an eyebrow.
“What? You’re surprised because I’m friends with your annoying neighbour.”
“Annoying?” You mumble and a “oops” escapes the dark-haired man.
“His words, not mine.” Kuroo clarifies, pointing a thumb at Kenma, who only sighs in response.
You clear your throat and hand Kenma the box, “thank you for the food. It was...convenient.”
Before you can finish the acknowledgement, Kuroo starts laughing, “convenient. Kenma, man, for gods’ sake, stop cooking.”
Your neighbour takes the box from you and clicks his tongue.
You don’t linger on the goosebumps his fingers leave on your skin.
“My manager said I should eat healthy food.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’ve been telling you that for years, but you never listen to me. Anyway, we’re going out tonight, wanna come?”
You don’t realise he’s talking to you but the silence stretches for too long and his tilted head suggests he is waiting for an answer,
“Me?”
“Yes, you.”
“Kuro…” Kenma mumbles and his shoulders slump.
You can't tell if he’s embarrassed or annoyed. He’s so hard to read, it almost upset you.
“Kenma won’t be there,” Kuroo informs as if he isn't standing next to him. “It’s gonna be fun. Apparently, you work a lot, it could be good for you, you know. It’s not just me, by the way, some old friends will come.”
“Okay.”
Kenma widens his eyes and Kuroo smirks. Both seem surprised, though you’re probably the most surprised here.
“Okay.” You repeat, maybe to convince them—or yourself.
“Great, I’ll see you at seven then.”
He grabs Kenma by the shoulder and leads him inside.
Your eyes meet yellow eyes one last time, and your heart skips a beat—or a thousand. Either way, it feels good.
It’s hard to focus on work that day. You keep thinking about what you’re gonna wear, what you’re gonna talk about. What if you make a fool of yourself? What if you’re boring?
Your forehead hits your desk, and a long sigh escapes your lips.
You get ready when it’s time, going for something comfortable and simple, and when seven rings, you find Kuroo standing in front of your door.
“There you are, shall we go?” He offers and though your eyes scan around you, you find no trace of Kenma.
Kuroo said it; your neighbour won’t come.
You knew that, and in lieu of relief, you’re disappointed. You ignore the reason behind it—it doesn’t make sense, but you feel it anyway.
“Sure, let’s go.” You say with a last glance at Kenma’s door, hoping it will open. When it doesn’t, you decide to follow Kuroo.
Kuroo’s friends are fun to be with. There’s Yamamoto, a bit too loud for your taste but nice, then there’s Kai, who’s interesting and makes you comfortable and finally Fukunaga, who is quiet and—something else. The four of them went to the same high school, one from the opposite district where you grew up. They tell you there are usually more of them but one of them is in Russia, another is doing a campaign abroad. Kuroo mentions the other ones, but you don’t remember all the names.
“We’ve got some pretty famous guys in the team,” Kuroo says with pride.
“Kenma the richest though,” Yamamoto complains, and you raise an eyebrow. So, he does come from a wealthy family, you conclude.
Two more join the group, Bokuto and Akaashi, and you can’t help but relate a bit to the latter, with his serious attitude and reserved nature, especially when Kuroo jokes that you’re both workaholics. You don’t deny the assumption.
The evening goes pretty well, faster than expected. You’re not too awkward and find yourself laughing at Fukunaga’s lines to Yamamoto and discuss literature with Akaashi.
You drink a little too much compared to what you’re used to and it’s almost 2 a.m when Kuroo offers to drive you home. The room is blurring, and you can’t refuse.
You sleep the whole way home, vaguely aware of the man helping you into the lift, and only realise you're almost in your flat when you catch the sound of Kenma's voice.
“I’ll take care of them,” you hear him say.
The next second you're pressed against him. His skin his colder than Kuroo’s but his scent is a mix between hazelnut and white musk. Your nose is drawn to his neck.
You don’t know how he manages to take your keys and remove your shoes, but when you open your eyes again, you’re on the couch and he is standing in your kitchen, pouring water into a glass.
“You’re being nice… again…” The last part is above a whisper.
He takes his time to answer, he always does that. “I’m not a brute.”
“I thought you were.”
“Sorry.” He apologises and despite the alcohol making your mind dizzy, your eyes widen and you sit up straight.
“I should be the one apologising.” You reply.
“Don’t be so loud.” He groans and hands you the glass.
“Oh, wanna talk about loud? Weren’t you the loud one when you played shooting games and LoL?
“I don’t play LoL anymore,” he avoids your gaze.
“I couldn’t sleep for weeks. I tried asking nicely, but you wouldn’t listen or even look at me.” You let out an annoyed grunt, “just like now. You’re not looking at me right now.”
Your body moves on instinct, and inch forward, your nose almost touches his. His ears turn red, but you don’t flinch back. “Do I disgust you or something?”
When he finally turns, when his breath brushes your face, and the pupil of his yellow eyes dilate, you feel every single one of your muscles stiffen. You break the eye contact when your cheeks are burning up.
“You don’t disgust me,” he says but you've already forgotten the initial question.
“Thanks for helping me last time.”
He says nothing back and gets up.
“Drink water and go to bed.”
What happens next must have been a nightmare (you wish it was). But he’s one foot outside your apartment when your stomach twists violently, and you barely make it to the sink before letting your guts out.
It’s the first thing you remember when you get up the next day, Kenma helping you walk to the bathroom, helping you brush your teeth, putting you to bed.
You vomited. In front of your asshole neighbour. He helped you, cooked you food, showed you his kind side, and you vomited.
You’re nothing but shameful.
You want to hide in your bed and never get out of it. Maybe you should move out, sell your apartment and go abroad.
That would make your grandparents sad, though.
You sigh loudly, your head hurts but you still go to your kitchen to make yourself a coffee.
Being in this place reminds you of the night before and if you don’t want to drive yourself crazy pacing the floor, you decide to take your bike to go to your safe place.
Obaa-san notices it right away; the dark circles under your eyes, your bad mood, your incessant fawning—everything gives away your lack of sleep.
“Is your neighbour annoying again?”
Your heart races faster at the mention of Kenma, “what? No, no. It’s over, we found a… solution.” You lie through your teeth.
“What’s wrong? You’re not even eating your food.” She wants to serve you more soup, but you stop her.
You sigh, again, but tell her everything. When you’re done with the story, you see her brows furrow deeper and deeper.
“We didn’t raise you to vomit on people’s feet.”
Your stomach twists, “please don’t talk about vom—I’m embarrassed enough.”
“As you should be. Isao, let’s go.”
She calls for your grandfather and starts packing a bag of fruits.
“What are you doing?”
“We are going to apologise.”
You curse yourself and every single decision that led you to this exact situation. You’d rather quit your job than face Kenma and be forced to write excuses in front of your family.
It’s cruel, cruel, cruel.
You follow them anyway.
“Huh?”
“Kenma-kun,” your grandmother says. “Pardon the intrusion but we came as soon as we found out what they did to you.”
You look down at the floor, not caring if you seem like a child instead of a twenty-something-year-old. You just want this to be over—soon, soon. But then, Kenma chuckles, and your head lifts.
“It’s fine,” he says. His laugh is soft, so nice to your ears. You’ve never heard him laugh before, but now, you don’t want to hear anything else.
“Please enter,” he offers the three of you, and you finally step inside his apartment.
The curtains are closed but lights cover the walls. Purple, red, blue. The couch is huge, and the kitchen looks too clean to be used. It makes sense when you see boxes of takeout and instant ramen on the counter. At the back, you see the door to his gaming room—the one next to your office—open. You can’t count how many screens there are, and cables are scattered across the floor.
And it smells like hazelnut and white musk. You’ve never smelled something so nice before.
Why does it feel so warm inside? Why do you feel safe here?
“I brought fruits, it’s nothing, but please accept it.”
You end up staying there for about an hour, talking about everything and nothing at all. You learn he played volleyball back in high school, and that he is two years younger than you. Your grandmother is peeling fruits, your grandfather is drinking the lemonade Kenma offered and he explains that he owns a sports company.
“What a smart boy,” your grandmother exclaims.
You don’t really know what “sports company” means. It could be a million things, and it’s certainly more complex than that. He probably simplified it for your grandparents’ sake.
“Our grandchild is also very smart. They have an architecture office and are the youngest-ever architect to work with Tokyo City Hall. Do you know the new hospital they’re building in the suburbs? They designed the plans and-”
“Alright, it’s almost time for dinner.”
You get up suddenly.
The sun starts to get down, and you only take notice of the time by watching the hour on your phone.
The corner of Kenma’s lips lifts a little and you immediately turn to your grandfather for his smile is too sweet for your heart to handle.
“He is a kind man,” your grandmother whispers to you when they’re about to leave.
“I know, I know.” You groan.
She pinches Kenma’s cheeks, “call us if you need anything.”
You would’ve guessed he’d hate physical contact, but he doesn’t complain. His features are soft as she says goodbye.
“Good luck with them, they seem tough, but they can be very sweet!”
“Oi!” You shout but they close the door behind them, chuckling.
You don’t want to face Kenma, don’t want to show him the embarrassment on your face.
“So… dinner?”
“What?” you turn a little in his direction.
“You said it’s time for dinner. Do you want to order something?”
The question makes you happy even if it leaves you puzzled for a few seconds. It seems like Kenma Kozume is full of surprises. And maybe that’s what you need, so you shrug.
“Why not.”
When he takes his phone from his pocket and starts ordering food, you smile widely and bite your lips.
A dinner leads to another, and another, until it becomes a routine. You come to his place, usually on Mondays because it’s his only free night. He shows you some of his games, you never beat him, and he laughs when you blame it on the controller.
You’re impressed by his skills and think that maybe he should become a professional.
You pretend to be upset when you lose, but deep down, you just want to hear him laugh.
Sometimes you cook something together, though you’re the one in control of the quantity of salt and the temperature of the oven.
And he listens to you ramble or complain about your work.
When he’s out of town, which happens more often that you thought, you start to go out more. You decide that it’s time to put more colour in your apartment, so you buy cacti, and carpets and frames. You long to draw again, like you used to, so you bring back your old pencils and sketchbooks from your grandparents’ house. You missed the smell of that cheap paper and ceder. Sometimes, you have a drink with Kuroo after work (alcohol-free; you won’t repeat the same mistake twice) and a coffee with Akaashi on the weekends. It's often quiet with him; he reads a book and you draw him reading.
When Kenma comes home from his trips, you welcome him with drawings of beautiful places you saw while he was away and good homemade food.
“Better than what I ate at the hotel,” he says, and you can’t help but smile.
You don’t really know where this friendship is going, maybe it isn’t meant to go anywhere, but it’s comfortable and deeper than any relationship you've had in years.
You had no idea what you needed before, but since he showed up in your life, it all became clear.
You still know little about him; he remains a mystery to you, and you can never decipher what he's thinking. But you enjoy being with him—that is.
There are some glances exchanged that last a bit too long, hands brushing against each other, words left hanging in the air as if they’re too fragile to be spoken aloud. It’s not enough to call it something more, but it’s also too much to ignore. Sometimes, it keeps you awake at night.
It's Christmas and you hate this time of year. It's cold outside, crowded in the streets and on top of that, it's the time when your parents return to Japan. Apparently it's important for them to spend time with the family, which you find hilarious, given that they've never been here for any of your birthdays.
You complain and groan about it to your grandmother; she’s used to it. It’s the same song every Christmas. She always stays quiet, and when she does, you know she agrees with you.
It would have been more fun to be with Kenma, you can’t help but think when you’re sitting at the table, half-listening to your father talking about his new project in Singapore. Instead of being here, you could be eating KFC on Kenma’s couch, playing Mario Kart (you’re almost as good as him now) until the sun rises.
Your brother is watching YouTube on his phone (isn’t 12 years old a bit too young to have a phone? Why did you have to wait until you were sixteen and get a part-time job to buy one that lasted until uni?).
You don’t realise you’re glowering over him before your mother calls for him, “Kengo. Turn off that video, please, we’re eating.”
“But it’s Kodzuken’s last live of the year, and he’s breaking his record.”
You roll your eyes and get up to help your grandmother in the kitchen.
“Who’s that Kodzuken?” You hear your grandfather asks from afar.
“He’s the best YouTuber and streamer. You know he has over 10 million subscribers on YouTube, and he sponsors volleyball players too. He’s like the best.”
“Let me see that fabulous man,” Isao chuckles. “But that’s Kenma-kun.”
The plate you’re holding almost drops to the floor.
“Yes. His real name is Kozume Kenma.”
You feel the gaze of your grandmother on you, and she’s about to say something, but your voice chimes in, and you take the phone from your brother’s hands.
“What the fuck…” You curse.
“What’s wrong?” Someone asks; you don’t even know who. You’re too stunned to answer.
“I-I’ll go wash my hands.” You excuse yourself and go to the bathroom.
You sit on the edge of the bathtub and tap his name into the internet.
There are articles about him, a YouTube and Twitch channel, and your brother was right, with million and millions of views; he even has a Wikipedia page.
Why didn’t you know that? Why did you assume he was a rich kid too lazy to work.
You don’t know why but you’re feeling betrayed. It feels like you’ve been lied to—which technically isn’t the case, but it feels the same.
Everything makes sense now: the fans, Yamamoto’s comment about him being rich, the mention of his manager and above everything the sleepless nights spent on his games talking, chatting, screaming. He was just working.
You feel extremely stupid for not connecting the dots before, but you also wish he had told you. Not that it would have changed anything in your friendship, but at least you wouldn’t feel like you’ve spent the last few weeks sharing most of your time with a stranger.
The anger you experienced when your first met him is quick to come back, even if it’s not for the same reason now. It’s not because he is too loud, but because he is too quiet.
Maybe he doesn’t trust you. Maybe you don’t matter to him as much as he does to you. Maybe he’s not the stranger, but you are, and he just pitied you.
It’s a good thing your grandmother opens the door to come and get you, otherwise, you could have spent the whole evening making up scenarios and speculating on why Kenma never told you what he was really doing in his life.
You act like nothing happened when you sit back down at the table. Your brother has turned off his phone, and your grandfather keeps glancing at you. You stay silent until your parents leave.
"Don’t be mad at him,” your grandmother says when it’s time for you to head home.
You don’t promise you won’t be.
You do go home, but instead of your door, you stand in front of his. He’s probably still doing his live, but you knock on the door anyway.
When he opens, you can see the red in his eyes, probably from staring at the screen too long.
“What’s that?” You show him your phone.
“My… YouTube channel.”
He’s so unbothered, so unimpressed, it makes you want to cup his face with your hands and scream at him.
“I didn’t know.”
He raises an eyebrow.
“I didn’t know you were doing this. You said you had a sports company.”
“I have a sports company. Why are you so upset?”
Kenma never asks questions, he usually just answers them and then listens to you talking, asking more questions. It leaves you confused.
“I know nothing about you.”
You feel your eyes getting wet and your throat tightens. Why are you so emotional when it comes to him? You hate how weak it makes you.
“What do you want to know?”
Everything. Everything, is the answer.
Your favourite colour. Your favourite food. What makes you laugh (apart from seeing me lose at Mario Kart). What films do you like? When did you start being friends with Kuroo? What's your happiest memory? Your saddest one?
“What do you think about me?”
Among the infinite questions rushing through your mind, this is the one you chose. Perhaps it’s the one you’ve wanted to know the most, the one that’s been eating you alive for weeks.
“I-” He begins but stops immediately.
“Of course,” you turn around. Two steps, is all it takes to reach your door, but Kenma stops you.
When you face him again, you feel your blood rushing through your whole body, warming you up.
He’s avoiding your gaze, but his hand clings to yours and his face his red, from his chin to his ears.
“You’re interesting and it’s nice to talk with you… Your food is good. You’re passionate about your work and it makes me want to be more invested in what I do. You’re funny when you’re upset and you’re a terrible, terrible player.”
His grip loosens a little, and he straightens up.
“I think you’re great, a good person. Someone I like spending time with, someone I think of when I go to bed, and someone I miss when I’m away. I didn’t tell you about my job. Maybe because I assumed everybody knew me, well, at least everyone who uses social media. Maybe also because… you’re way cooler than me, and what I’ve done with my life is nowhere near what you’ve accomplished.”
You’re shocked, to say the least. It’s the longest you’ve ever heard him talk—he who never uses extra words, who makes minimal effort in everything he does—just bared his soul to you. He must be exhausted at this point.
You gulp loudly, and the only thing your mind can picture is you kissing him. So you do. One step toward him, a hand against his cheek, and your lips on his.
You fear he might push you, run away, and slam the door in your face. But instead, he kisses you deeper and his hands find your hair and the back of your shoulders and your waist.
You don’t know how long it lasts—one minute, forever. Your brain doesn’t seem to work properly, only your heart responds, and it screams his name.
Kozume Kenma.
One of you breaks the contact only to rest your foreheads together.
It’s awkward, but it feels right.
Someone passes by, one of your neighbours, and you both step back.
They greet you with a wide smile, excusing themselves for interrupting.
You clear your throat, “I-I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Sure.” He says, not meeting your eyes.
That night when you go to bed, even though the sheets are cold against your skin, you think the walls feel warm.
“And so, if you want to marry someone, you just need to be annoying and insult them for being an asshole.” Kuroo explains matter-of-factly to Bokuto.
“I never said Ken was an asshole.” You justify.
You hear Kenma sigh.
“Well… at least not directly to him. But I thought it really hard. Maybe I wrote it in the letters I left at his door-”
“Love… they got it I think.”
“Right, sorry…”
“Arrrrgh, I’m so jealous… I want to have a relationship like you guys.” Bokuto scratches the back of his neck and groans loudly.
“Bokuto-san, if you love someone just tell them.”
“But Akaaashi, I’m not a poet like you. I can’t just write love letters and stuff.”
“C’mon, bro,” Kuroo interrupts. “Isn’t it great to be single? You don’t have to worry about making the other mad or sad or-"
“Kuro says this because he doesn’t want to be the only single guy here.”
“Oi! Kenma, if I hadn’t helped you conquer their heart, you wouldn’t have been able to get someone like them.”
“You helped him?” You rest your chin in the palm of your hand and look at Kuroo.
“He never told you? The night when you were completely wasted, two years ago, I was the one who suggested he take care of you. And the day when-”
“Okay, time to go. Your grandparents are waiting for us.” Kenma gets up and you can see Kuroo smirk from the corner of your eyes.
You’re about to tell him to wait, you want to know more about his friend’s story. But Kenma takes your hand and leads you outside, not caring about Kuroo’s comments about him being a coward and Bokuto’s complaints about nobody caring about his love life problems.
Once you step outside, you call for him.
“Huh?” He speaks. He never says more than that.
“I love you.”
He kisses the top of your nose and whispers, “I love you too.”
a/n: the story comes from a dream i had, i woke up and knew i had to write it haha. hope you enjoyed it

—•✦ STUPID CUPID!
BOKUTO's got it all, but while all his friends have special someone in their lives, all thanks to him, he was left single and alone until that one accidental night ‧˚꒰happy birthday, bokuto!! 🥳꒱༘⋆

Bokuto “The Volleyball Hero” was the center of MSBY Jackals. He got special interviews, merch of his own and even a vlog series for god’s sakes. He seemed like he’s the most fortunate among the members, but little to what the outsiders know, he was the most envious.
“I hope you both fulfill the love, family and happiness you're dreaming of,” Kenma called for a toast for his newly wed best friend and his wife.
Everyone around Bokuto was getting married, engaged or partnered up.
Let’s not go anywhere far. Just take Kuroo right there who was so busy sneaking kisses from his bride from time to time.
Not long ago, he was single as a pringle like Bokuto too. Man had casual to shallow relationships but nothing’s ever going anywhere, until that day Bokuto brought him as a plus-one at a wedding. Kuroo hit it off with another plus-one who’s not even related to the couple. It was love at first sight according to him, and now, he’s the one getting married.
Bokuto was left single.
He took a deep breath and saw his kouhai, Akaashi. Since he had been an athlete, he seemed to see his junior less. Excitement brewed inside him only to turn cold right away as he watched one of MSBY’s road managers lace her fingers with Akaashi’s. Yeah, it was all because of Bokuto’s meddling as well.
Akaashi was an editor of a Volleyball-centric manga and he needed Bokuto’s insights back then and so Bokuto gave one of MSBY’s road managers as contact person to communicate with Akaashi. Now, they were set to get married next year too.
A long sigh escaped through him. Everywhere he looked, everyone was happily in the arms of another. He slumped his shoulders. What’s so good about romance and relationships anyway? It’s not as if it’s as fun as Volleyball.
He pouted.
Bokuto was jealous, seething envious.
He wanted someone to give him a loooong kiss after winning a match just like Atsumu and his fiance. He imagined someone would call him long-distance whenever he’s away like how his pretty manager would do for Akaashi. He would very much love to look at someone and laugh with her like the world only belongs to the two of them just as how much Kuroo was having the time of his life right now with the love of his life.
All of them happened because of him yet he was left all by himself.
Tears triggered to fall from his eyes, but he swallowed every drop of them in. He was genuinely happy for his friends, and he wished, with all his heart, that their relationships would be successful and fulfilling.
Perhaps, he’s lucky in Volleyball but totally sucks in love. This is life. You can't have it all. So he won’t. That simple.
All night long, Bokuto partied like an animal he never was. He drank all the hard liquor together with the bitter truth that he’s the fun single uncle his nephews and nieces would love to play with.
“Bokuto-san, you've had enough! That’s- that’s too much!” He heard Akaashi called out to him, but he didn’t care.
Curse all the gods! All this time he was playing cupid to all his friends and now he’s the one without anyone.
“F@#k you!” He shouted to the heavens. Big F to that dumbass Cupid! He had been doing that loser’s job all along yet he ain’t having any reward. Asshole better train. He’d been missing his arrows when it came to him. “Aaarghh! Fu-”
Bokuto clasped on his chest. A strong sting came right through and, all of a sudden, he bumped onto someone. He looked back and a shroud of white flooded his vision.
Is he dead?
But how can he hear birds chirping?
Are there birds in heaven?
Well, there can’t be any in hell so he’s lucky he’s in heaven.
Bokuto opened his eyes as he slowly brought himself to sit upright. He rubbed the sleep off and took in his surroundings. Fancy room. He thought. Was this his apartment in heaven?
He glanced at his side, and he marveled at the ethereal being he saw. Must be an angel. A smile appeared across his face. He’s so lucky to wake up next to an angel, indeed. Itching, he poked a finger on her cheek.
Her eyes gradually opened, and he sure heard a chorus sang in his ears by how beautiful she was. She got up, wearing a large white tee, which looked immaculate on her by the way. She didn’t need wings to fly. She had already taken flight in Bokuto’s head.
Wait! Was this even true? You blinked twice. Thrice. Four times.
"B-Bokuto..." Your eyes widened. He’s shirtless, looking so hot this early in the morning beside you in bed...
Last night...
You inspected your clothing which gave out every sign of intimacy and if you were right...
"Y/N!" It finally registered in his head! He's still alive and it was you? He studied you closely, taking in your swollen lips, flushed cheeks and beautifully disarrayed hair. You're lovely. You're still an angel regardless if he's just dreaming.
Who thought you were this pretty all along! Bokuto's the type of guy who could never take a hint unless you initiate and you...You never initiate nor flirt with him obviously that's why he'd never really see, consider you in that way.
Maybe it wasn't Cupid's fault, it's his. An angel was just around him but he always failed to notice.
Gulping the thick lump in your throat, if you would remember correctly...
You turned to the bedside table on your left. Surprise coloring your expression as you take the paper on the table.
It was a dream. It was a dream. It was a dream.
But no.
Bokuto took a long read at the paper you were holding. “W-Wait- We are...”
“Yes.”
You were, indeed, married to Bokuto Koutaro.
One of the guests at Kuroo’s wedding was a government employee, who had the authority to officiate a marriage with just a stamp and now...
“Semi!” Bokuto proclaimed. “It’s him! What happened?” he asked. “How?”
You blushed. You’d rather not recall what happened last night which was a bit clear for you unlike Bokuto who was totally clueless. You snuck a glance at him. He’s so comfortable in his own skin, attractive mire than he knows it, and you were flustered, seeing him half uncovered.
“I-I-I guess we better get dressed first!”
“Oh! Yeah!” He agreed and stood up. The blanket slipped off his body completely, unraveling what’s left unraveled that had your eyes popping at the sight in front of you. “I’m sorry! I'm sorry!”
You turned away red-faced.
You were the content creator especially assigned by the JVA to Bokuto. Since he had a strong clout and they can utilize it to promote volleyball, he had exclusive interviews and vlog series, which were something you were doing for him.
You probably know Bokuto more than himself by now with all the research you've done about him and with all the time you spent with each other.
Since you were assigned to him, your career was centered around him, which was your entire life right now. You would be lying if you'd say you didn't find him attractive at all. You may have quite a soft spot for him you kept on burying to death, keeping things professional between you two until last night. If there's something aside from volleyball he's a pro at it's definitely...
You shook your head. You shouldn't be thinking these things.
Once dressed, you both decided to seek Kuroo's help. After all, the newly kept hinself sober last night.
“So we got married at the same day, huh?” Kuroo told Bokuto while waiting for Semi on the phone. The two of them talked over the guy in question to seek for a solution.
Apparently, according to Semi, divorce was the easiest method since annulment would be pricier.
“He said we have to divorce,” Bokuto informed you. Now, this part came with a little bit of disappointment for him. “The papers will come in a month or few.”
He was lowkey sad. He got his chance for a love life only to be taken away in a snap.
"No worries," you said. "I can wait."
Somehow, you shared the same sentiments as him. Despite your close relationship professionally, you'd want to get to know him more...personally—not as an athlete, but as an individual.
You were about to exit the hotel but a small commotion suddenly made its way towards you.
The reporters and vloggers were quick to pick up on the news, and as soon as someone saw you both together, they all approached with questions.
Bokuto couldn’t lie as he was actually proud and happy to have you, while you were worried that your accidental marriage might affect his image and sponsorship.
You tightly held onto his hand and looked at him. He leaned down and you whispered. “I can be your wife.” His eyes grew in surprise. “For a while.”
An ecstatic grin appeared on his face. Who would’ve thought he’d be so lucky? He got an angel as his wife, though he felt so stupid not to realize how good of a match you two would make until something unforeseenike this would happen.
Bokuto's quick to pull you close to him and he proudly announced that he’s officially a married man. You couldn’t help but feel the same happiness he was radiating. You giggled just watching him. He glanced back at you, eyes watering with gratitude.
“You’re the best!”
Sure, he already said that to you a hundred of times, but there's something about the way he said it this time that made it different.
•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•
You both agreed to live together in the meantime since people’s noses would be up his business. Also, soon, he’d be away for overseas training so it wouldn't be much of a big deal.
Bokuto took his role as a husband very seriously though. He’d welcome you with a big tight hug whenever he’d come home from practice. After all, you have already done more than that the very first time you got re-acquainted.
You’d spend the rest of the day eating and doing chores together. Some nights, you’d be playing card games and watching movies together just like two best friends, enjoying each other’s company in cold nights.
“There you go! Catch him! Go!” Bokuto screamed at the TV.
“Uhm...I think that’s the killer though,” you pointed out. “He’s chasing after the victim.”
Bokuto stopped, stupefied. Damn! How could he look so much like a loser in front of you. You just laughed at him. It was not mocking, rather it was very endearing. Just watching you laugh sort of made him much bubblier too.
Silly! He was so silly. He laughed at himself and you both shared that small but warm moment. It felt so good he didn’t want it to end.
Aaaargh! He was truly an idiot for realizing that you were there right beside him all along and he kept his sights to non-sense pursuits. It didn't matter now what mattered the most was he got you right with him at this very moment.
Days turned into a week and it’s time for his overseas training. Bokuto felt a little off. Everybody could tell that he wasn't his usual chirpy self. He got so used to being around you that not having you in a day made him lose all balance in spirits. A pout never left his face the entire flight.
They took a break from practice and his teammates were teasing each other when his phone rang. Lazily, he looked into it and his face lit up when he saw it was you.
“Y/N! It’s youuu!” He exclaimed with enthusiasm. “You called!”
“Of course,” you said. “You were away so I thought I might check up on you.”
Timezones had it. It was during this time when you’d both watch your favorite show together, so it reminded you of him. And...maybe a day without him was something so new now for you.
His smile stretched from ear to ear. “I never thought you would! It’s great to hear your voice.”
You giggled from the other line.
“Me too.”
“Will you call me tomorrow before the game too?” His tone was almost pleading.
“Sure,” you said, rolling all over the bed like a giddy high school girl.
“Yes! How ‘bout even after the game? Then the next day?”
“I would. Everyday.”
Atsumu quirked up an eyebrow, watching Bokuto go from zero to a hundred. Just what kind of vitamins did he take just now to be so bolstered up at an instant like that.
“What’s with him?” The blonde asked his teammates.
Hinata scooted close to Atsumu and whispered like a gossiping old lady. “Y/N...”
“Ohhhh...” Tsumu reacted as they talked about Bokuto and his express wedding setup, but the person in topic had all his ears on you over the phone.
Distance didn't matter between the two of you. He enjoyed listening and talking to you over the phone. It also made coming home more exciting. He never felt this way before.
“Y/N!” Bokuto announced, arriving home. You turned in anticipation and he copped you in his arms and twirled you around like a Disney princess.
You were in a fit of laughter and he simply found joy in your happiness.
“Miss you so much!” He hugged you super tight, rubbing his cheek against yours.
“Me too! Me too! I stopped watching the series because I’m waiting for you.”
“Oh, Y/N!” he exclaimed then remembered, “I smelled like airplane! I better take a bath first before we get back to episode 7.”
You laughed and he headed off to the bathroom, while you set aside his luggage and kept some of his stuff.
“Y/N! My angel!” he called from inside the bathroom and you covered your face. He was always so cheesy like that even if it’s just you two and you’re still not used to it. “I forgot to bring my towel with me.”
You grabbed his towel and knocked on the door. He partially opened the door, showing you a glimpse of his well-toned abs and a slight peek at his bare pelvis and legs. You reached the towel to him not looking at back at his direction.
“Are you embarrassed?” he asked, curiously.
“Y-Yes,” you admitted, flushed to the neck. “Are you not?”
“Why would I?” Bokuto wrapped the towel around his waist. “I believe I look good,” he said. “The same as you.”
“W-What?” Your face heated up profusely.
“I think you look good with or withou-”
“Stop!” You ran away, diving into your bed and hiding under the blankets. You knew you couldn’t say no if he’d ever make a move. Under the context of your agreement, you were married..for a while. You also live uder one room, so the possibility of that is highly likely.
You heard his steps getting closer. He sat beside you and lifted the blanket, revealing your bashful self underneath.
He giggled. “You’re just so cute. Do you know that?” His face inched closer to yours. He kissed your nose and you closed your eyes. Next thing you knew, he had already captured your lips. His arms now caging you as you got lost, fallen under his spell.
His eyes were so loving when you’re under him. Peeling you off from where you hide, his smiled like he couldn’t believe what he’s seeing. “You look so good. So good just like how I thought.”
Right then and there, you allowed yourself to believe him and get swept away.
•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•
Koutaro usually comes home early but he was getting home a little late recently. You were glancing at the clock when the doorbell rang and you thought it was him. He probably left his keys again. You headed towards the door and opened it.
“Mail for Bokuto Koutaro-san,” the mail man informed and you signed the receiving form.
You read the delivery details attached on the envelope.
From: Semi Eita
You gasped.
Divorce papers. You knew this would be the divorce papers you and Koutarou requested when you initially found out that you got married by accident.
And you remembered that this setup was only for a while.
Your heart ached so suddenly. You didn’t want this to end. You didn't want you and Kotarou to end. You might not start the way normal couples do, what you had for him was real. At least, for the few months you spent with each other, it seemed so real. But was it ever real for him too?
You must’ve prepared yourself when you agreed to this arrangement.
Tears crawled down your cheeks. You’re in love with Koutarou, but you must do the right thing.
The door to your, no, his apartment opened. “Y/N, my angel! I’m back hooome! Where are you?” Bokuto excitedly announced, but his face dropped to be welcomed by your crestfallen face. “What happened? Why are you...”
You wiped your tears away and forced a smile. “No, this...is just...nothing. Nothing really!”
He sat beside you. Before he could even tease you, you handed over the envelope to him.
You heard the material being torn open as you focused your vision to your hands on your lap.
Several scenarios played in your head. It’s either he’d play it cool because all this time he knew what he’s singing for, and all this was just a random episode in his life—something he could easily shrug off. The other one was the probability that he loved you the same, but he wouldn’t want to ruin the agreement between you and him, so he’d gladly set you free.
You weren’t prepared for this. Could you ask for one more night, days, weeks, months, years with him? Would he allow that? Do you really have the courage to ask that of him? But you knew your heart would be broken into shards once he rejected you.
Your mind spiralled out of control.
“Is this...why you’re sad, Y/N?” he asked, full of concern. You couldn’t lie about that. “Actually, I asked Semi about this. I really wanted to divorce you immediately.”
You pinched close your eyes and gripped the fabric of your skirt.
“But seeing that this got you sad, I guess, I better tell the truth.” He took your hand and cupped it between his. “I want us to divorce so I can do things properly.”
You raised your head to look at him.
He knelt down on the floor and brought your hand over his cheek. “Oh, how could I even hurt you? It’s my fault I made you cry like this.”
“Koutaro...” you mumbled in confusion.
“My friends are helping me plan things. Kuroo even helped me pick, but this couldn’t wait.” Scurrying inside his pocket, he pulled out a box, flipped it open and revealed a diamond ring. “I want to marry you properly, Y/N.”
Your tears of sadness were replaced with pleasant surprise. Your hands flew to your mouth.
“Now, this wasn’t as grand as we are thinking of but...” His lips quivered and soon he joined you in sobbing. “I can’t afford to see you crying. I can’t break up with you, Y/N. Ilove you. You’re my angel. How can I survive knowing that I let you fly away?”
You lovingly laughed at his signature dramatics and you knelt beside him, engulfing him in a warm embrace. “I love you, too, Koutaro.” You parted a little, looking him in the eye. “I’ll marry you.”
He burst out in happiness as you giggled like pre-school kids encountering the magic of puppy love.
Bokuto recalled wishing for this not a while back...To laugh like the rest of the world doesn't matter just like Kuroo and his wife back then when you two first met.
Now, he’s got a wife too.
Maybe it wasn't Cupid who was stupid all along. Maybe it was him. The love of his life was always right in front of him yet he failed to notice.
Thanks to Cupid for doing his job at last. He finally struck an arrow to the woman Bokuto could never live without.

. . .akito shinonome!
❝ Di mo ba nadarama? (Don't you feel?) ❞
what in the H E double hockey sticks is he feeling?!
he doesn't know why his heart goes crazy just the mere sight of you he doesn't know why he suddenly stutters his words when talking to you, he just doesn't understand why his mind wants to see you every day.
well, to everyone, it's no surprised you've captured the hearts of majority of the student population in kamiyama high. you're literally the IT girl/boy/person of kamiyama and you aren't even aware of it.
you're even a great senior! he met you through toya, who was trying to find tsukasa since he wanted to confirm something and they found him talking to you, and he was instantly whipped! though, he denies it.
toya lightly teases him that he acts like a mess when you're around him and akito just barks back with lies, just to save his pride.
"I'm telling the truth, toya. I don't act weird whenever (last name)-san is around." akito denied his best friend's, toya, accusation. him? having a crush on the school's heartthrob? that's stupid. he would never-
"excuse me?" akito suddenly froze on the spot as toya twirled his head only to see you carrying a bunch of test papers. "oh? toya? and uhm.." you squinted your eyes, trying to recall the name of the frozen ginger beside toya, "oh right! akito, right? you're ena's cute little brother, hm?" you tilt your head forward a bit, smiling in his way.
in the end, toya had the last laugh as he watches his best friend being completely different around their senior, "I told you so." as akito clutches his chest, where his heart is at.
just innocently dropping hints to toya that he 'needs' help with a difficult math problem, that's probably a year above them level, and that he needs a reliable and amazing senior to help him.
he ends up having tsukasa and sometimes rui, it's rare having you to 'help' him since you're quite busy as well.
but, that doesn't stop him! he often has toya delivers his little gifts, after a long time convincing toya that it was his older sister's, ena, request to deliver 'her' gifts, to your desk when you're not around, some students may have thought that toya has a crush on you.
his little gifts consist of key chains of (favorite things), sometimes flowers and pins with your favorite series/anime/manga/etc.
how he knew this? he actually got information from one of ena's conversation with you and your post from your social medias, in which he secretly hearts everything on an alternative account.
he turns into a lovesick puppy the moment you walk in, if he were a puppy, his tail would be going crazy all the while his face would be a hot mess.
during the sport event, you were one of the mc's and it made akito's motivation in winning increased TO THE MAX!
he was running faster than ever, even ena was suprised to see her little brother like that, poor tsukasa who was on his back, tsukasa was holding onto akito's shoulders for dear life.
"shinonome-san is running as fast as ever! it seems like he's eager to win, don'tcha think, partner?" the other mc look at you, waiting for your commentary.
you chuckled, smiling as you watch the intense match between your juniors, mizuki and akito. "I couldn't agree more, partner! even poor tenma-san is holding on for dear life~" both you and your partner snickered.
after he won that match, he was congratulated by you over the mic and no one can image the furious blush appearing on his cheeks, like, YOU, out of all people, were to congratulate him first before toya can?????
he was on cloud nine that even toya had a difficult time in getting him back to his senses till they were in their band practice, an hand to shake him back to life.
he denies this for a long time but, on valentine's day, instead of the classic chocolates and flower, he actually got you special and that he's proud of but, never admit it was him.
he got the valentine's day special chocolate pancake with (favorite fruit) on the side from the place where he usually buys his pancakes, he bought it using his hard-earned money. he also made oragami flowers, bouquet of flowers actually, the flowers being all of your favorite kinds. he actually spent a lot of time and dedication on the oragami flowers and learned them from a lot of youtube videos.
of course, he remained anonymously.
out all the gifts you've received that day, his gift stand out the most due to his effort in making it perfect. you gushed about it to your friends and one of them was ena. she had a gut feeling that it was her little brother, akito, but never got confirmation.
he doesn't know why his heart goes crazy just the mere sight of you, he doesn't know why he suddenly stutters his words when talking to you, he just doesn't understand why his mind wants to see you everyday. Don't you feel it?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a1b0ad1ade9144292c7141192e5680b0/8714511c7e683050-27/s540x810/89fa3472459a72f01a8919263a564d50289090dc.jpg)
. . .toya aoyagi!
❝ Crush mo rin kaya ako? (Do you have a crush on me too?) ❞
you're actually tsukasa's older, by one-minute, twin sibling so, he's known you very well.
though, he wasn't able to have a lot of conversation with you back then since you were more focused on your youngest sibling's, saki, health and was always in the hospital, in which he couldn't go, fearing that it upset his father.
despite not often having to chat with you, toya can see you as the loving and caring older tenma sibling, within the three tenma siblings, you're the matured and calm one, one of the reasons why toya and you got along pretty well.
him crushing on you came when you caught him tearing up a bit after an argument he had with his father, he was a little kid at the time, and instead of degrading him for crying, you sat beside him and comforted him, whispering nothing but sweet things to him as he cried in your shoulder. you comforted him like how you comforted tsukasa whenever he has his episode due to him thinking he wasn't a great enough brother for saki.
after comforting him, you gave him a small smile and encouraged him to go after what he loves the most, and at that moment, the thing, or person, he loves the most at the moment, till now, is you. he just doesn't realize it till his unitmates told him he was, in fact, has a crush on you.
he felt the warm and loving aura coming out of you that you always give to your family, especially to your younger siblings. something he had craved from his father ever since he was born and yet he never received.
after that day, this little kid was always following you around like a little duckling, except in the hospital, in which you find it to be amusing and adorable since you've ever known toya to be the quiet yet blunt stoic kid and seeing him following you around whenever him and you are inside your house.
toya, at the time, didn't know why his cheeks felt warm and his heart going slightly faster than before whenever he encounters you. it makes him space out sometimes.
one time, he made a claw machine empty because he wanted to give you plushies like he gives to saki, through tsukasa, as well! you were surprised to see a lot of stuff toys in your room when you got back home from the hospital.
it made your face brighten up and as a thank you, you gave toya one of your beloved books in which you cherished the most so, image the shock expression he had once tsukasa told him that it was one of your cherished books you held dearly, and you gave it to HIM??
upon knowing that fact, the book you gave to him now has its very own section in his bedroom shelf, it even has its own clear protection case to keep the dust away if he's not reading it at the moment.
nobody is allowed to touch the book besides him and you.
now that you two, alongside tsukasa and saki, have grown into teenagers, you two have more screen time with each other now that saki is finally out of the hospital!
since you and tsukasa are the same age, meaning when toya was a freshman in kamiyama, you were a senior at miyamasuzaka, the same all-girls school saki is in.
despite being in different schools, you two interacted a lot! especially when all four of you hangout after school!
his feelings for you were rather obvious, at least to tsukasa and saki, he was so different from his quiet and stoic self.
whenever you're around, he smiles more often all the while talking to you, toya can't help it! you're just a beautiful scenery, it's a crime to not admire you. saki even called him out-
"(n/n) sure does look beautiful, right, toya-kun?" saki innocently teased the blue haired individual, who was admiring her older sibling as they baked a bunch of cookies for the four of them.
toya immediately snapped out of his daydreaming upon being called out, "o-oh.. yes, of course they are." he shyly nodded, feeling his cheeks warming up. saki simply chuckles, knowing damn well that she'll be the matchmaker alongside her older brother.
when vivid bad squad was formed, he immediately rushed to you and told you about it, you smiled at him, he was finally doing what he wanted and not what his father wanted, and you were proud of him.
whenever he's at band practice, he often unconsciously rambles about you to his bandmates, an and akito teases him about it, telling him that they didn't know toya has a crush.
that's when he furrows his brows, crush?
due to his oblivious self, an and akito, mostly an, explained to him that he has a crush on you, and he was like "oh...oh!"
now with this newfound information, he felt even more nervous around you, sometimes stuttering his words as if he's malfunctioning robot.
his heart just goes crazy and with the way you acted around him these couple of years, thanks to an explaining how most women acted when they have a crush on you, he wonders if you also have a crush on him too?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a1b0ad1ade9144292c7141192e5680b0/8714511c7e683050-27/s540x810/89fa3472459a72f01a8919263a564d50289090dc.jpg)
. . .tsukasa tenma!
❝ Cross my heart, P.S. I love you ❞
he met you first in phoenix wonderland, you were a guest invited by one of your friends.
he, alongside his troupe members, was greeting the guests ever-so loudly and cheerfully and when his orange-yellow eyes set on you, his world just stopped right there and then.
your (h/c) was shining, complimenting your sparkling eyes and dazzling sweet smile, he felt his heart was racing, racing fast.
he was so stunned that when you and your friends came up to him and his troupe members, he was fumbling with his words all the while his troupe members cheerfully, mostly emu, greeted you and your friends. tsukasa's eyes were mostly on you, though he did try to act normal and tried to look at your friends as well but, his eyes kept glancing over you.
rui, who noticed this, teased him after you and your friends went away. tsukasa denied it, saying you look 'familiar' to him though, rui didn't seem convinced.
over the time your there, his eyes were trying to find you again, wanting to see if he was daydreaming that time but yet every time he sees you, he malfunctions again.
on the other hand, you caught him spying you from afar and whenever he quickly hides, you find it amusing.
he didn't know why he wanted to find out more about you, though you were a random guest, you can be EVERYWHERE!
but, I guess lady luck blessed him after a couple of weeks, he was in front of saki's school, miyamasuzaka, and while waiting, he saw you again! alongside your friends.
his eyes went wide, and my dude just stood there like 🧍♂️
once he and saki were back at home, he immediately bombarded her with a lot of questions about you.
"hey, saki, do you perhaps know somebody in your school with (h/c) hair and (uniform style/details about your uniform)?"
"oh, well there a lot of people with (h/c) hair in my school but, with the way you describe certain details uniform, I think you're referring to (last name)-san!"
that's where he learned about you as he watched saki talking about you gleefully, you were an assistant and close friend to the MORE MORE JUMP! members, no wonder why saki seems happier to talk about you to her older brother.
and no wonder he recognized you, he once saw you in shizuku's social media, in which he follows since they are good acquaintance with each other.
he thought about messaging you since shizuku tagged you in that one post. he wanted to formally apologize for weirding you out on that day.
and that's how you basically meet the blonde weirdo yet cutie from the theme park you visited a few weeks ago again. he firstly messaged you by introducing himself before apologizing for his behavior a couple of weeks ago, you honestly find it amusing and adorable. you two chatted with each other all day, and then the next day, and the next day-
after that, he invited you to hangout after school whenever your free, sometimes he brings along saki and toya, since you two bonded within the private messages you two have been sending each other.
honestly, he hasn't moved on from your first encounter, he still acts like a silly idiot around you. tsukasa doesn't even know why like, you're like everyone else, average yet has a certain charm around you making tsukasa even more invested into you.
whenever he's around you, he feels like very different that has him questioning himself about it. like, why does he feel funny around you but not to others? why does he feel the urge to impress you more with his charms and talents? why does he stutter his words out like a fool whenever it's you? WHY DOES HIS HEART YEARNS FOR YOU?!
I feel like he's seen a various of romance theaters, movies, dramas, etc (thanks to saki) so, he caught up with what's happening to him, it went like this;
"I'm in love..." the blonde muttered, finally knowing the reasons why he's acting differently to a certain someone. he had finally solved the mystery of his strange behavior whenever you're around!
"I'M IN LOVE- HAHHHHHHHHHH?!" tsukasa immediately stops himself upon seeing in the corner of his eyes, his troupe members all can be seen in the doorway, spying on their leader while rui was recording it with his signature smug cat-like smile plastered on his face.
in the end, let's just say rui, maybe emu and nene, got their blackmail for tsukasa.
he was quite shy at first but, he warms up since in his thoughts, he NEEDS to impress his crush, aka you, because the only way your crush is gonna notice you and wants to talk to you is to impress them! (tsukasa's words, not mine)
expects him to be a very, very, VERY gentleman towards you such as carrying your things, bringing you little snacks, escorting you to your house to your school along with saki, and many more that I can't possibly list down.
when he heard you were a fan of phenny-kun, he just has to impress you with his voice imitation of phenny-kun, he just had to. I mean, it IS his job, alongside his troupe members, to make people smile. his day brightens up whenever you enjoy his imitation of phenny-kun! doesn't he love you too much?
he probably made a play dedicated to you and have scenarios where you, the main character, and he as the love interest, he's too busy daydreaming he didn't notice that one of rui's inventions is coming straight to him-
he became a simp, your simp to be exact.
doesn't he love you so much? Cross his heart, he'll love you wholeheartedly that's for sure!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a1b0ad1ade9144292c7141192e5680b0/8714511c7e683050-27/s540x810/89fa3472459a72f01a8919263a564d50289090dc.jpg)
. . .rui kamishiro!
❝ 'Di ko alam ang nangyayari (I don't know what's happening) ❞
he honestly didn't expect himself to be having a crush on somebody, especially when his crush is oblivious foreigner such as yourself.
you were the infamous transfer student he had heard about from the juniors; it was quite obvious due to your appearance alone, so you stick out like a sore thumb. if that wasn't bad enough, you also had a hard time understanding and speaking their language. you usually kept quiet as you feared that you might sound like an idiot when speaking japanese.
so now, picture this, a transfer student from (country) that has a hard time understanding and speaking japanese in a japanese high school, seated next to the well-known troublemaker of kamiyama high, now surely it won't be chaotic? spoilers, it did.
rui honestly finds you amusing, he would chuckle whenever he would ask for something to you, and you would completely give him another thing instead what he asks for.
it was another day in class in this new high school of yours, if the lectures make your head dizzy because it's difficult in understanding the teachers a bit, the purple head boy next to you makes it more difficult.
"psst.. mind letting me borrow your eraser for a moment?" he whispered to you, not wanting to get caught by the teacher. rui watched as you confusedly scanning your desk, trying to understand what he wanted from you.
'okay, he clearly wanted to borrow something... but, what??' you were thinking a bit too hard that the lecture from the teacher is mentally blocked from your head, now focusing on the given task by your seat mate.
"um.. t..t..this?" you tried pronouncing the said word in japanese but, it only sounded broken a bit, all the while showing rui a sharpener.
and that moment, rui kamishiro knew, he'll be going to enjoy this year.
you being shy reminds him a lot about nene but, in your reason, you were afraid of sounding stupid while speaking his country's language. though, he'll give you the benefit of the doubt since you were learning how to speak the language.
he teases you even though you mostly don't understand all he just said, which amused him more while you were determined to learn about the language more to know what rui is saying to you most of the time.
eventually, it was one of your daily routines to have rui tease you every day, even though you don't understand half of it but, hey! you're at least getting better with your japanese.
and with that, rui and your friendship began to develop as time went by, the purplenette introduced his unitmates to you and you were thankful that they introduced themselves in english. p.s rui rambles about you to them.
sometimes rui say english words to help you understand what he or other people are saying. though, if someone was mocking or insulting you, rui wouldn't even try to tell you what they are saying instead, he just guides you away from them by wrapping one of his arms around your shoulder and distracts you, though you had a gut feeling that the person was saying bad stuffs to you, you pick up some of their words and understand soe.
I think rui having a crush will take a long time since he's more on focusing on his inventions and his performances with his unitmates so, catching his attention in you, romantically, it's going to be a long ride. though, if you did, in which is going to happen, congratulations then.
though, he did start to feel whenever your around as the days goes by, and honestly, dude was confused. I feel like he has no grasp of like love and crushes since he's probably more focus on his works and his unit's performances that he doesn't have the time to think about anything else like love.
so yeah, it took him a long time to solve this difficult equation on why he feels weird whenever you are around/mentioned. he doesn't know what's happening to him.
with that, he went to nene and intentionally drop a topic like "what if somebody feels weird whenever somebody's around them, like something's making your heart beats faster?" and nene just look at him with a blank expression of hers, already knowing what's up with her childhood (best) friend however, she won't say it just for fun.
even with his newfound feelings, he acted the same but, once you come closer to his chest area where his heart is at, you'll hear his heartbeat. his teasing is still the same though he increased it to the max, anything for you<3
within school/lunch breaks, he'll teach you japanese words and how you pronounce them while you teach him english/(native language) words and how you pronounce it. though, that doesn't mean he'll stop teasing you just because him and you are teaching each other different languages, from time to time, he says to you compliments in japanese and when you try to pronounce it, his smug cat-like smile widens even more.
but, he'll only get scolded by you after you search about the phrases back at home, he'll do it again and again even if he's going to get scolded by you and he'll probably get the silent treatment by you<3
although jokes asides, he'll calm you down whenever you're feeling really anxious about speaking japanese, especially in front of the class whenever a teacher calls you out for recitation. he's one good listener and advice giver, so any problems you have, please go to him and he'll make it better, especially for you.
fast forward to summer holidays and school was ending, with all the moments and days you've spent with rui, you finally made a decision, something you'll feel embarrassed about but, hey! rui someone that is dear to you. as rui finished packing
up his things and mostly every one of your classmates were outside now, you approach rui very differently unlike the way you've approached him before this.
"rui.." you muttered out, loud enough for the said person to hear and make his head turn towards you.
"hmm, yes?" his eyes went immediately towards you, seeing a letter in your hands, your gaze shyer than ever, and some sort of red tint in your cheeks.
"I.. uhm.. I.." you stuttered out, trying to find the words you wanted to say to him. rui, noticing it, gives you a pat on the head as a sign of encouragement as what he always did to you whenever you feel nervous/anxious.
eventually, you finally did as what you have planned the day before, "I.. just want-ted.. togiveyouthis..!" you quickly finished yourself, saying it all in japanese, while handing the letter to him before quickly rushing out, leaving rui with a dumbfounded with a letter in his hand.
the mad sciencetist, I mean, the purplenette boy stared at the letter the rest of the time as he walks home, wondering what you wrote in this. though once he had opened and read it, he lets out a smile, not his usual smug cat-like smile but, a genuine and gleeful smile.
with his heart beating crazily as he only thought about what you wrote in that letter, his thoughts filled to the brim with you, he honestly doesn't know what's happening right now.

Being a single father was hard on Katsuki, but he’d be damned if he couldn’t give his little girl the best life he could. Being a single father was hard on Katsuki, but he’d be damned if he couldn’t give his little girl the best life he could.
He could proudly say his daughter was the best thing to ever happen to him. That you were the best thing to ever happen to him.
He was there for all your accomplishments, big or small. He was always so proud of you — from the moment you took your first steps and every minute after. Even when he found out you were Quirkless, his mind never changed.
You were still his pride and joy. His entire world. But to you… it was like your whole world fell apart right in front of you.
Like your father, you always admired heroes. You wanted to be the strongest, the best of the best — and Katsuki saw a glimpse of himself whenever you talked about everything hero-related. It changed when you got a little older, though. Suddenly it was like your passion had completely vanished.
You stopped talking about heroes, and it even led to you ignoring him when you came home from school at the end of each day. Of course, this new behavior wasn’t unseen by the Pro. He’d have to get his eyes checked if he didn’t see it.
At first he assumed it was simple teenage rebellion. You were fourteen, after all. But then he saw how distant you were becoming. You were spending more time in your room, even eating your meals in there.
It’s not like Katsuki could do anything about it most nights. He’d been working a lot of late nights at his agency, so he wasn’t always home to stop you from your antics. And if he was home, sitting silently across the table from you, he couldn’t find the right words to say.
He didn’t know how to reach out to you, mostly because you never gave him anything to work with. Even if you did, he still wouldn’t know what to say. All he knew was that he wanted to help you, but couldn’t.
…
Days off had become rare for Katsuki, but today he was home free, waiting for you to return from another long day of school.
Relaxed on the couch, he let out a heavy sigh, turning off his phone. He wasn’t getting anything done aimlessly scrolling through news feeds. Except maybe indirectly catching up with old friends.
However, his mind was cleared of all that when he heard the front door unlock, causing him to turn his head expectantly.
He was thinking of getting take out tonight instead of cooking like he usually did, and he wanted his junior’s input on what they should get.
When the door finally opened and you stepped inside, you slipped off your shoes and walked right by him. Katsuki deadpanned at being treated like he was invisible. Much less by his own daughter.
He’s Great Explosion Murder God: Dynamight, for crying out loud!
”Hey— get back here, kiddo.” Katsuki said, getting up and stopping you before disappeared down the hallway for the rest of the evening. Placing both hands on either of his hips, he sighed. “It’s my day off and you won’t even say hi to me?”
You only mutter something under your breath, causing Katsuki to roll his eyes. Before he can ask what you were trying to say, he notices one of your backpack straps in ripped, loose threads coming out in every direction.
"What happened to your bag? That's the second one this month. If you're not careful with your crap then I'll start sending you to school without a backpack."
"Fine, whatever! I don't care, just leave me alone!"
The sudden outburst came out louder than you wanted. You didn't mean to raise your voice. You were always careful and quiet, knowing that your father wore hearing aids around the house.
You slap a hand over your mouth as your eyes widen. You're quick to slip past him and run down the hall before slamming the door shut as soon as you enter your room.
You don’t want to talk to your dad about this. It’s none of his business anyway. What happens at school, stays at school. How would you even bring up the fact that you were getting bullied for being Quirkless? It was stupid, and you figured it would pass eventually. That the kids at school would get bored of you and move on.
That was your mindset for the last year.
Just keep your head down and it would all pass by, just like things always did. Either way, you’d still need to have a good excuse for why your backpack was messed up. You knew not just anything flew by your father so easily. After all, he wasn’t the number-one hero for nothing.
With your bag thrown on the ground, you throw yourself onto your bed, just wanting to relax and get your mind off things. You weren’t going to cry. You’re tough, and that means you can’t cry over every little thing that happens. At least… that’s what you were thinking as you felt a tear rolling down your cheek.
With every year that passed, Quirklessness was becoming even more uncommon — and both your parents had Quirks. So why not you? Why did you have to be the odd one out?
Why did you have to be born so weak?
You shoved your face into your covers as simple tears became full on sobs. You hated it. Hated the feeling of being so useless, and feeling like you didn’t belong. And maybe you didn’t. Maybe you didn’t deserve to be born with a power. It’s why the universe cursed you to be a powerless nobody who just happened to be the number-one Pro’s daughter.
You couldn’t be a hero. It was impossible for someone like you to be one. And every time the thought crossed your mind, you felt like you were letting down your father. Letting down the person you aspired to be like.
Before you were supposed to gain a Quirk, you remembered how you would talk to your dad about all the amazing things you would do once you had your ability. Your dad was your biggest cheerleader, so it felt like you wasted all that time when you ended up without any special powers.
Your comforter was soaked with your tears, your eyes burning the more you cried. It wasn’t fair. It’s not fair. Nothing is fair.
…
You didn’t notice your bedroom door opening as you wallowed in your own self-pity. It wasn’t until you felt a dip at the side of your bed that you felt your father’s presence beside you. He didn’t say anything as he cautiously stroked your hair in a comforting manner, untamed and wild just like his own.
You didn’t have it in you to care that he was here, watching you pour out all your pent up feelings of frustration in the form of hot tears, burning your eyes as you hiccuped and swallowed down whatever you were going to say. Because in truth, there was so much you wanted to tell the man beside you.
But you weren’t sure how to. Verbally expressing yourself has never been one of your strong suits. Whenever you felt angry and upset, you distanced yourself until you felt better.
“Did something happen at school?” Katsuki’s voice was uncharacteristically soft when he spoke, bringing his hand down to your back as he rubbed soothing circles to calm you down.
He could clearly see you were hurting. It hurt him to see it. If there was something going on that you weren’t talking about, he wanted to know. But he quickly figured that raising his voice and demanding that you tell him wouldn’t work. He wouldn’t dream of raising his voice at you.
”I… I want to be a hero.” You manage through your choked out sobs. “I want to be strong. Strong like you, but I— I’m not—“ You cut yourself short as you cried harder. You felt so pathetic, not even capable of talking about it. “I don’t know,” Is what comes out.
Katsuki frowns, ignoring the wetness forming in the corner of his eyes. He wasn’t a crier himself, but you were his daughter. His baby girl. A loving, gentle, kind-hearted but hot-tempered girl who wholeheartedly believes she isn’t good enough. And maybe it’s his fault for not trying harder to reach out and showing you that you do matter.
That you were still special — Quirk or none.
“You don’t have to talk to me now, I… I can wait.” the blond says, hand now still on your back. The jacket you have on is his hero merch. It’s nice to see that you still know who the coolest hero is. “But I am still here when you decide to. I know I’m not always home, but I would drop everything if you wanted to talk, alright?”
Lifting your head slightly to wipe your eyes, you swallow your feelings for a moment to speak. You feel like you’ll burst into tears at anything right now, but you try your best to ignore the feeling bubbling up inside you.
“Even though I don’t have a Quirk… do you think I can still be a hero?” you ask, keeping your voice low. You didn’t want to accidentally snap again and get in trouble if you weren’t already.
There’s a painful twist in Katsuki’s chest, he’s seen this before. Though they’d gotten past it long ago, he can’t help but be reminded of Dek— Izuku. Even though he’d been forgiven, he still felt guilty about how he treated him in their adolescence.
Seeing that same sight in his daughter hurt his heart. He held back the tears he knew were in his eyes, and sighed.
”It’s hard to be a hero without a Quirk, sweetheart. But having powers isn’t what makes someone a true hero.” Katsuki says, making you curious, as well as confused. You wondered what he meant by that, and you looked up.
”Huh? What do you mean?”
Katsuki’s words catch in his throat, trying to find the best way to go about this. How should he approach it? Delicate situations were admittedly hard for him to handle. He knows that. But still, he has to at least try.
He’s supposed to be the best, isn’t he? That means he’s also supposed to be the best at being a father. After a long minute, he shifts so he’s more comfortable on the bed.
“Having strength… it doesn’t equal being a good hero. Not all the time.” He starts out, trying not to mess this up. “It’s good to be strong, sure, but being a hero… it’s what’s in your heart that matters. You’re a good person— you like to help people and expect nothing in return, right? Like helping people, and holding doors for geezers and all that crap,”
You roll your eyes. That’s just basic decency. You don’t understand where your dad is trying to go with all this, but you try to be patient and hear him out.
”Helping people and having a good heart is an important part of being hero. You’re a kid with big feelings and a big heart. So you know what I think?” he asks.
You shake your head. ”What?”
”I think that even without a stupid Quirk, you’re already a kick-ass hero. And I don’t wanna hear you say otherwise, okay?” he says, reaching out to ruffle your hair. “You’re my goddamn daughter, you were born with greatness in your blood. Those punks at school are gonna have hell rain down on them and their parents if they even think about talking you down. Don’t be afraid to put those idiots in their place,”
You look away from your dad again, but you feel a bit better now. Even if this is just the start, you’re grateful for your dad— even if you were a bit of an ass towards him. “Dad…” you groan, knocking his hand off your head. “Stop it,” Katsuki laughs a bit and sighs.
“You’re tough as nails, with or without a power. And I love you just the same, understand? You’re the best damn kid in the world, I mean that. Even though you’re always so damn moody—“
”Dad!” You complain again, puffing your cheeks as they burned red with embarrassment.
“Cool it, Firecracker. I’m just messing with ya,”

Cry to Me | Solomon Burke 01:42 ───────────●───── 02:34

When your baby leaves you all alone.
And nobody calls you on the phone...
It takes a long time to come back down from earth after someone you love leaves your life forever, whether that be from a breakup that eventually separates the two souls through circumstances or necessity, or in more extreme cases through death. You can mourn a relationship, mourn the ex-partner, or mourn the person you once were but can’t seem to recognize anymore in the mirror every morning. Seemingly all at once you began to feel these things; some of these thoughts and lingering emotions popped up at the worst times, and then before you knew it, you were drowning in the stupor of depression and anxiety.
It had only been a year—well, actually, less than a year. You counted down the days until the anniversary. Glancing at the calendar in the kitchen every morning, punishing yourself by allowing yourself to be reminded that almost a year ago you lost someone who was once the soul you held in the highest regard.
Geto Suguru.
A classmate, a friend, a first love, a nightmare. It was one of those situations where whenever people asked you to recount, you simply couldn’t find the energy to. How do you talk to people about watching the man you thought you knew and trusted with everything from your secrets to your body turn his back on everyone and everything? How do you talk to someone about looking into the sad, bloodshot eyes of the man who made you feel more love than you thought you were capable of accepting and looking into those eyes just before he died in the dark—bloody and defeated?
The answer has yet to be made clear to you. You went on with life after that night; it effectively ruined Christmas. You spent that once-merry holiday curled up in your bed, hoping to sleep away any festivities or reminders of what had transpired less than twenty-four hours prior. You didn’t stop living though; you continued to teach at Jujutsu High. Your students were safe, and that brought genuine joy to your heart. But the heart that beat proudly for your talented students was also a shattered vessel that needed to be repaired. You didn’t want Kento to be under the impression that it was his job to mend your heart, to be there as an emotional crutch. Nevertheless, he was around, acting as calm as ever whenever he stood beside you and fought back the urge to take your hand into his and tell you that he’d never leave you.
For Kento, it just felt too superfluous. You had never indicated that you returned the feelings he spent years feeling for you. As budding jujutsu sorcerers still learning to use your techniques and going on missions when you still believed you were making a difference, it was a pivotal time in your lives, and the one thing that clouded many of Kento’s memories of it were the aches and yearns to be with you, to have you see him as more than your junior and friend. But that never happened. Kento understood why, and in the fashion of the reasonable person he was, he could never find it in him to resent you. He simply swallowed his lingering thoughts and instead cherished the days he spent seeing you walk down the halls of Jujutsu High. Giving him a bright smile as your paths crossed.
When Geto left without many words, only leaving behind a trail of bodies, Kento was convinced he’d never see you smile again. He became used to seeing that drained, hollow look in your eyes up until your paths diverged—he left to become a salaryman, and you went off to explore the few avenues jujutsu sorcery had to offer you.
Now your paths were converging again. Kento lived in the same world as you once more. In many ways, he was now your lifeline; he didn’t say it in many words, but he made it clear that your well-being was on his list of priorities. Despite all of it, you still felt like you lived in a world alone. The calendar in your kitchen mocked you, and the holiday lights being strung up across many of your neighbor’s roofs mocked you. You wanted to hide away, but you knew you couldn't, and it just served to piss you off even more.
When you're all alone in your lonely room.
And there's nothing but the smell of her perfume...
It had been approximately five days since you drunkenly dialed numbers into your phone and called Kento at the most ungodly hour of the night. You were too sloshed to realize that this was one of the worst decisions you could have made at the time. Even as you continuously shifted positions around on your head, one minute letting your head hang off the edge and the other with your head nestled in the clutter of pillows at the foot of the mattress, you did not stop to think of the things you were rambling off into the receiver. They weren’t even particularly funny things; in fact, they were pretty sad. Maybe that’s why Kento didn’t sigh heavily into the phone and encourage you to drink water and go to bed. It was the right thing to do, right?
Any sane person would stay on the line after someone they know calls them, and the first words that spill from their lips are “Do you suppose…Do you suppose? Do you think that, fuck, do you think that we are given one chance at happiness? And if you fuck it up, is that just it?”. The words were clumsy and sounded like it took a lot of effort to come out of your mouth. Kento decided that it would just be best if he rubbed the sleep from his eyes and sat up in his bed. He hugged his phone between his ear and shoulder as he threw the covers from his body and resigned to the task he was putting himself on.
He listened to you ramble a bit more about what you had been feeling recently, the dark cloud of depression feeding you thoughts of emptiness. Kento knew why you had been so off recently and why there was this sudden shift in your behavior, but he wouldn’t bring it up until you did.
“It’s almost Christmas Eve,” you said while pouring the now lukewarm bottle of vodka into your glass for an ill-advised refill.
“It’s almost Christmas Eve,” he repeated. His voice was fatigued from his interrupted slumber, but he was also careful to sound gentle when he spoke to you. Many people would calm Kento blunt, self-serious, or inflexible. Maybe those were all true, but he never wanted you to be on the receiving end of that impression of him. He understood his personality, and he knew you did as well. Others could call him rude or rigid, but you never seemed to. That’s how he knew you were paying attention to him, that you understood him like very few others did.
Kento knew this would be a hard obstacle to get over. He didn’t doubt that you thought of Geto often. Whether the memories you held onto were pleasant or not wasn’t his business. Either way, you were grieving, and he extended his support to you. Somewhere along that way, you began to feel a pang of something that actually scared you for a while. Out of nowhere, you felt more and more drawn to being beside Kento. You long to see him where he was gone, to smell the classic scents of his cologne, or to just feel the way you felt when he was nearby. You spent so long feeling this cold, gray cloud hang over your head, but Kento was the sun that emerged from beyond the clouds and warmed your skin.
It truly did scare you to think that you harbored these feelings for him. You sometimes felt like you weren’t ever allowed to find happiness with someone again. It was completely false, but your mind scolded you for it anyway. But no amount of chastising could do away with these stubborn thoughts. Eventually, they escalated into daydreams and vivid dreams on restless nights. You needed him, you wanted him badly. You knew it was a bad idea to dial his number and disturb him in the middle of the night with your slurred words and pathetic hiccups.
“I just want to be happy again. To feel again.” you expressed your vulnerability fluently as your drink moved past your lips and burned as it went down your throat.
“You will be happy,” he said it as if he were absolutely certain. Maybe to him, it was because he wouldn’t ever stop trying to make you happy.
You sniffled, running the back of your hand harshly across your nose. You finally set your glass down and surrendered to your ever-growing fatigue. With your phone still pressed to your ear, you laid back down on your bed. You looked up at the ceiling, and for a while no one said anything. You wanted to scoff at Kento’s ridiculous notion that eventually you’d be alright. How would he know?
“You’re just saying that,” you insisted softly, nearly losing the words entirely as your mouth was too lazy to get them out firmly. “Thank you, though. I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have you around,” you wanted to say so much more. Your heart was thumping like a frantic rabbit in your chest. You were so drunk you could have said anything, something less insane than, “I love you.”
But you didn’t. You could have said anything else, but you didn’t. You chose to throw all of your cards out onto the table. You couldn’t see it, but on the other side of the phone, Kento winced at your words. You would never take a drunk confession of love seriously, even though he desperately wanted to. He wanted to believe that you loved him. He needed to hear you say it out loud with a clear mind, to see your face and touch your skin as you said it right in front of him.
It had been five days since all of that transpired. Five days for it all to sink in and for you to dial his number again after you were settled comfortably on your couch. Your record player buzzing in the background and the bumps of your heartbeat were all that filled your ears as you waited for him to answer the call. When he finally did all that you wanted to say, it spilled out without warning.
“I love you,” you said quickly, “and I’m sorry.”
It confused him. Why would you be sorry? He certainly wasn’t. You were sober and still in love with him, it was a godsend.
“I love you, and I’m not sorry,” he said after an agonizing bout of silence. “Can I say it to you in person?”.
“Please”.
You don't ever have to walk alone, you see.
Come on, take my hand, and baby, won't you walk with me?...
It felt like it happened all at once. A millisecond in time. One minute you were alone in your quiet home, and the next you were opening the door for Kento. One event after the other is like clockwork. It didn’t take much, just the stillness of the room coupled with the longing eye contact. You both let go of the deep breaths you were holding before throwing all hesitancy aside. Kento held you tightly in his arms as you shared your first kiss. It was a kiss he had dreamt about, one that he tried to picture in his head many times in his youth. He was so overwhelmed he didn’t even realize that you both were crying as your lips met. Salty tears mixed into the tastes of your tongues meeting in the middle.
The beats of the record playing in your living room made up the soundtrack of the dance between your lips. Your hands wandered with a vice-like grip as they felt the hardness of his shoulders and the softness of his neck. The feeling of your featherlight touch on the sides of his neck made a shiver run down his spine—it was a welcomed feeling of excitement. With your arms moving up to lazily drape around his neck. Kento became fully enraptured in your loving, desperate embrace.
He could feel your hips move against his middle. The friction goes to the hits of the soulful drums and organ keys. As he broke away from the kiss, he rested his forehead on yours, sharing in the same breaths as you while the tips of your noses nudged. There was security in his hold on your waist. A promise. He was not going anywhere. You fight back the urge to moan out against his lips where his thigh is pushed between yours—your middles brushing hotly in a pleading waltz. He held you to him firmly, and you could feel his body reacting to yours.
It was all a hot blur until your back hit the plush mattress of your bed and Kento was crawling up your body to meet your lips again. He kissed you as if he believed he’d die if he stopped. You decided not to think too much. You decided to simply let your body do what felt right. And what felt right was to say Kento’s name like a prayer as his thick, hard cock stretched you out. Your fingers fisted his sandy hair like the reigns of a saddle. You decided not to think too much, and it was amazing. To be blissed out as Kento shared eye contact with you; to know that you were both thinking the same thing. You both thought this would never happen, and you’re both shocked at how foolish it was to delay it. Kento fucked you like it was his job. A job he would gladly do until he drew his last breath.
Kento buried his face into your neck as his hips took on a job of their own. He moved with a fervor and passion he rarely sought to showcase. He was rutting against you, searching for every last morsel of delicious friction he could have. He gladly buried himself as deep as he could in your pussy. If he could stay here forever, he’d never leave this bed. He’d wanted you since you were both so young, and you spoke to him in passing. He’d never stopped wanting you, even long after he had convinced himself he’d never be yours.
Once he found that he couldn’t hold out any longer, his thrusts became erratic, with no rhyme or reason to the pattern, just desperate sputters coupled with loud pleas.
"I need it, fuck, I need it. I need you.” Kento begged for something he didn’t need to grovel for. You were a mess beneath him. Your tears hadn’t stopped after the kiss. Your cheeks were damp and your throat felt dry. You didn’t cry for your losses or for distant memories. You were crying from the fluttering feeling that was erupting in your chest when you looked into Kento’s eyes and saw unbridled affection. You were crying because you felt better right here and now than you had felt in months. You were crying from being taken by the man who has kept you in the back of his mind for ten years.
You fucked each other until neither of you could move from your position on the bed. The sweat sticking to your skin, damp between the legs. Every time he tried to slip out of you and roll over, you held him tighter.
“Not yet,” you muttered each time.
The feeling of his hard back against your soft fingers was addicting. He chucked softly against your shoulder. He knew he’d probably fall asleep like this, inside you, fully content and exhausted. Before your eyes closed to cap off the night, the last thing you could hear over the dulcet tones of Kento’s soft snores was your record concluding with a hearty scratch.

Hey! I just recently found your Magneto fic and I am absolutely obsessed. Any updates coming in the future?
i’m super glad you enjoyed magneto! this ask has gotten me to finally put a discontinued in the description of magneto. it’s not at ALL because of you in particular, but i’ve realized by putting off adding it to the description i’ll keep giving people false hope. forgive me if i use this ask for a tediously long post describing why exactly i will never update magneto, so i can link it easily for anyone with similar questions in the future. 😭
so. short answer? no. magneto will probably never be updated. i’m really sorry for that. my interests have changed since graduating high school and i don’t really want to write bnha anymore.
long answer?
i started writing magneto pre-pandemic during my junior year of high school. i had seen there was only about a 100 self inserts for bnha at the time and thought “well, if i post something it’ll probably get a lot of attention, since the fandom is growing in popularity a lot and there’s a scarcity here!” 2019 was an interesting year for fanfic in bnha, since it didn't have enough content for the growing eyes looking for it.
i ended up being very correct. too correct. i actively updated magneto over the course of half a year, roughly, and in that time it rapidly climbed in attention. since 2020 ive only updated it about twice(?) and that hasn’t deterred the new readers it’s gotten. i get comments every other day asking about updates.
magneto is currently the most kudo-ed bnha si-oc on the entirety of ao3. which is fucking insane. i don’t think it deserves it, but popularity is rarely about deserving. usually it’s about being just good enough, just novel enough, and being posted at the right time.
but i digress: it doesn’t feel possible for me to update magneto for a variety of reasons.
1) my disinterest in the setting would make any future update disingenuous.
i haven’t been actively into the bnha fandom in about four years now. i don’t really read bnha fic aside from the very occasional si-oc, nor have i kept up with the manga or anime. the only fic i’ve ever written for the fandom is magneto, and it’ll probably always be my only fic for the fandom. (watch me say that and be wrong in the next few years LMAO)
it would be really rude of me to stomp into a space i don’t even like anymore and post something lackluster and lacking in passion. especially with the express intention of gaining more engagement from readers. like it or not, magneto IS the most popular si for bnha, and i think i drive attention away from better books by updating and inadvertently preserving that position in the ranking.
I can't believe no one has written any "self-insert as Bakugou" fanfics yet what a bunch of cowards by the_incidental_author and i have jostled back and forth for that #1 kudo-ed spot for the past five years. which i admit has been fun, but i would very much like for them to overtake me. it’s clear (to me, at least) that they actually enjoy writing bnha more than me and update more often to boot.
i fully welcome ANY fic to take magneto's position at this point, if only so that less people comment how poorly written it is. which leads me into my next point.
2) my writing style has SIGNIFICANTLY changed over the past five years.
when i do my yearly reread of magneto i actively cringe and have to resist the urge to rewrite every chapter in a separate google doc. in any hypothetical world where i do add to magneto, i do a complete rewrite. in no particular order, the things i would change are:
kenzo being defined by three character traits and nothing else. her exhaustion, her mild spite for her father, and her aimless wandering through the plot
better grammar. dear god the grammar errors. dear god the SPELLING ERRORS
the pov characters being more developed and feeling more like Individual People with their own personal motivations and histories that are not defined by what the plot needs from them (cough, reacting to how cool kenzo is)
not just recapping each anime episode and stating what kenzo would do in that situation
placing greater focus on the way quirk society discriminates against those with undesirable quirks and backgrounds. what does it really mean to be the child of a criminal in a world where people assume that sort of thing is hereditary?
kenzo's classmates should've been more classist in general, especially in relation to quirk discrimination. UA is a school only the most wealthy and powerful get into, there's no way there wouldn't be social disconnects that create tension between a dead eyed daughter of a villain and more than a few nepo babies.
if you have any interest in naruto, skyrim, asoiaf or dragon age you've probably read my more recent fics. fluffy clouds and a tinge of wonder, the fic i have updated the most this year, is a really good example of how significantly my writing has evolved since starting magneto in 2019. my technical skill and style have changed enough that it just would be tonally jarring for me to update magneto without outright rewriting everything.
like. im being so fr with you right now, i didn't learn how to start outlining until about a YEAR AGO. magneto was written on a chapter by chapter basis with little idea of where exactly it was going. i implied that there would be a future confrontation between kenzo and her father, but i didn't have any idea of HOW that would occur or even what the consequences of it would be.
adding to magneto as it is would be like trying to add a sleeve to a shirt that's missing it's entire back panel and most of it's front. i'd be playing catch up with the plot and end up having to rewrite previous chapters anyways.
3) bnha commentors have been kind of really mean to me compared to other fandoms i've written for LMAO
ok. please don't draw and quarter me for this. MOST commentors have been extremely complimentary, and kind. besides the occasional bomb of like seven comments in my inbox of ten hearts from one user (which, sweet, but please don't do that) the bnha fandom has been totally fine.
but a very small minority have been really pushy about making me update a fic i have clearly not touched in two years, and realistically haven't actively updated in four. from comments just saying "wow this is great. update soon." to DETAILED reviews of how bad my fic is and how they can't believe how garbage like magneto is so popular.
which like. i don't feel personally attacked by? i fully agree that magneto is bad for the previously stated reasons. i wouldn't read magneto if i were a casual reader and hadn't written it. usually the second kind of comment really annoys me because of it's presumption of importance and for how soul crushing it would have been for sixteen-year-old me to read.
bnha as a fandom, especially in recent years, has felt more and more like they treat fic like something that is created in a vacuum. souless content that exists for readers to consume. the comments don't go to an inbox, they go to a void, so really it doesn't matter if i say something really belligerent to an author i don't know about a Self Insert Fanfic They Wrote In Between Rehearsals For Their High School Play.
but whatever. if it had just been me experiencing that i would've written it off as like just my fic, but a close friend and frequent cowriter of mine Reavv has dealt with this a lot more than me.
they wrote It's a like a time travel comedy, without the comedy, another very popular bnha fic, and had to private it because people were going to their other UNRELATED fics and badgering them to update it. people still go into their comments insisting they unprivate it, oblivious to the fact that every time they ask it adds another year to reavv's internal timer for when they will.
a combination of my own experiences and reavv's have completely put me off of writing bnha i'll be fr. even if i was still in the fandom, the majority of my fics will always be about fucking dragon age and skyrim. i do not want random bnha fans coming into my dragon age fics and, AFTER NOT READING THE FIC, saying that since im active i should clearly update my bnha fics. that's a nightmare scenario for me.
in conclusion
i am so glad that people like magneto, i'm glad that i wrote magneto. the initial jump in readers i got from magneto gave me the confidence to write other fics, and the alternating pov format is a staple of most of my writing now. some of the comments i got for that magneto when i was a teenager were the only things that kept my ass going.
but magneto is never being updated. i don't even think it's gonna be rewritten. i really am sorry about that, but it is what it is. thank you for reading it, thank you for loving it, thank you for feeling ambivalent about it. good talk.
btw to the original asker, again. this is NOT a rant directed at you, you just inspired some Thoughts in me and i had to let them loose.

Second Lead Syndrome, Patient Name: Gojo Satoru. (cw: Mentions of character's death, canon compliant, there might be some slight ooc on Gojo's characteristic, fem!reader due to mention of pregnancy, brief Nanami x reader, only up to the Shibuya arc as I don't want to possibly spoil those who haven't read the manga or seen the spoilers, apologies if I do miss any warnings.)
Word count: 1193 (my hands-)
Gojo Satoru, a man who shifted the balance of the world when he was born onto this earth. A man who had people cowered in fear when he graced them with his presence, a man who had admirers falling to their knees for a chance with him, a man who had everything in the palm of his hands. Almost everything.
Year 2006,
Warm and sunny, the air was ringing with the sounds of laughter. Satoru, Suguru, Shoko and yours. The laughter lingered in the air like the lingered gazes Satoru had sneakily made to you. Your eyes welled with tears as you clutched your stomach from laughing too hard at Suguru's awful attempt at a joke. Satoru's heart skipped a beat, maybe two. Cheeks rosy as he lets you lean onto him for support. This is nice, the close proximity was nice, everything was just perfect. Until... it wasn't.
"Since you all promised me you won't laugh, I'll tell you... I really, really like Nanami," you bashfully admitted under a starry night to the other three. Suguru and Shoko were egging you on regards to your feelings for the sombre junior, but Satoru was on edge. How? How can a monotonous boy who rarely smiles swoop your heart first? How can he, the Gojo Satoru, the strongest of all, lose to a mere man like him? Ugly thoughts reared in his mind, gnashing it's teeth, demanding for answers. Satoru quickly tucked it away as you brought his attention back to reality. "You guys would make a great couple." "Why do you sound so paasive aggresive Satoru?" you feign hurt as you playfully pout at him. Satoru could only fake a chuckle as Suguru and Shoko looked at each other with a knowing worry. Blue eyes turned green, and things went for the worst for Gojo Satoru.
Year 2007
The news of Suguru's betrayal shook both you and Satoru's hearts, your best friend betraying you, Satoru and Shoko was the last thing you would imagine. After the failure of protecting Riko Amanai last year, Suguru and Satoru drifted apart as Satoru began working on mastering his techniques and standing alone as the strongest sorcerer. Although you did tried your best to be the thread that kept the friendship together, it was broken apart albeit your attempt. Guilt stricken and in mourning of the loss of your friendship with Satoru and Suguru, you had found solace in Kento as he too mourned over Haibara's death. With Kento unable to blame Suguru as he understands his feelings, your attraction to Kento deepened. Satoru saw this, and despite his emotions telling him to reconnect with you, his ego and his need to stand alone as the strongest won over. Occasionally talking to you became into awkward greetings as you and Kento stuck to each other by the hip.
With Kento's departure from the world of Jujutsu right after he gratuated, you followed along while maintaining contact with the others. Years went by when Satoru finally had the right mind to contact you, he was instead greeted with a call coming from you. "I didn't expect you would pick up actually, but since you did I'm glad. I actually want to invite you to my wedding, me and Kento initially planned to send you a card but-..." Satoru mind went blank as you continued on your talk, unknowingly that your conversation with him was one-sided. The only thing repeated in his mind was "you're... getting... married..." When the day of the wedding came, he knew he wasn't ready to face you. The people around him was buzzing with happiness for the new couple, unable to see or feel how he felt. When he saw you in your dress, he knew that his time was up. But oh how beautiful you looked in that dress and how he wished it was him waiting for you by the altar instead of Nanami. When you caught his gaze in the crowd, you smiled. It felt like the world had slowed down as his heartbeat picked up. The only thing he could do was smile back as he watch your make your way to your future husband.
Year 2018
Things weren't exactly going as smooth as Satoru had hope. Not only had he lost the chance to win your heart, he lost his best friend, his moral compass, his emotional support. As an added insult to the injuries, you've announced your departure from being the school's teacher due to your pregnancy. How can he forget, you were a married woman for a few years now. A married woman that is not his to love and care, a woman that is not carrying his legacy with him, a woman that he is still oh-so-hopelessly in love with.
You looked so radiant, so beautiful with the glow of motherhood despite just starting it. Satoru wished it was him, he wished it was him who had Nanami's life. But he can't blame him, to be with a woman like you is something that Satoru would kill a thousand men for. He would carry the weight of the world if it meant he gets to stand by your side till death parts him and you away. The ugly thoughts never left, it had been the one to kept him accompanied in his darkest days. Feeding off from his jealousy as he scrolled through your socials, admiring your domestic life with Nanami. With a heavy sigh, he walked away from the students that had surrounded you, wishing farewell. Blue eyes that turned green had deepened its shade.
October 31st, 2018
Chaos, chaos was around and thriving in Shibuya station. Mangled humans, humans that turned into cursed entities, blood and death was eminent in the air of the subway station. Yet your radiant gaze was the only thing in Satoru's mind. It mingled with the disgusting feral thoughts of killing intent as Satoru demolish curses after curses. Hanami's death brought nothing but joy to him. Yet the poor man was rendered into a speechless boy as the voice of his old, and deceased friend rang into his ears. Memories came back, ignited by the spark of "Suguru's" voice. The memories of you, Suguru and Shoko, the time spent between all four of you came crashing into his mind. Before Satoru could do anything, he was trapped. Trapped by the binds of the prison realm. Everything happened too suddenly, he didn't even had the time to tell you how he felt, how he was a fool without you, how he cannot live without you.
Not even his Six-eyes could predict this, he knew that this was not Suguru, his Six-eyes tells him. And yet, there's nothing he could do for now. As the gates of the prison realm slowly dawned upon him, enclosing him in darkness, the only thing he could do is stare into the eyes of his old friend as his mind raced to tell you things that could not be reached to your ears. How ironic for the one with everything was trapped in a cage where the things he wanted are out of his reach.
A/n: Ngl, I kind of hate how I ended it and I'm not sure if it can be classified as Second Lead Syndrome. But, ehh mistakes are meant to be made as a way to improve in the future. Hope you enjoyed and look forward for the other stories of this series :)

Wow this was a long gap between Anime Polls
I am determined to finish off JJK tonight. It's only taken so long because my internet has been shit, but I am in a better space now, so no more yelling at the wi-fi (I am furiously knocking on wood).
Anyway, if you're new here, this is an anime appreciation household, but also a household that sucks at starting new series and continuing other series. (It's me, I'm household.) So, Tumblr gets to decide what I watch.
As always, propaganda* (*rambles) will be below the poll. You are allowed and encouraged to reblog and bully your followers into voting. You do not have to know me, follow me, like me, or like anime to vote.
Propaganda:
Free! - You all know the drill; Free!'s been here before. The longer it stays, the more 50% Off! quotes I use. This in no way should affect your voting preferences, it is simply a fact.
Zombie Land Saga + Revenge - TBH I didn't really have a quote more clever for the poll button than trans rights. So, trans rights everybody! (Plus idk October, zombies, spooky, gay, etc)
Fruits Basket 2019 - Need to finish it, sorry I haven't, I love Fruits Basket, I guess I wanna be emotionally fucked up. Yeah.
Bungo Stray Dogs -
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9591e9b3f8b4b3d955237fb285d35c57/a9016a0e92e70f67-53/s540x810/8e57bede0485b369b5f100f1773ab01f1e8320de.jpg)
I own this now. This is a threat. You all wanna keep Dazai away from me. If this loses another poll, joke's on you, I'll find another way to Not Be Normal
The Case Study of Vanitas - The answer, dear reader, to the question posed above is Danny Motta, apparently, in a The Owl House video. Anyway, I also bought and read the first volume of the manga and I fuck with this so hard let me watch it.
AOT: Junior High - TBH my entire TikTok fyp is Attack on Titan rn. I know it's a silly little chibi show without much substance, but I still wanna watch it.

THE 2018 DENGEKI BUNKO INTERVIEW WITH 86--EIGHTY-SIX AUTHOR ASATO ASATO
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1627e5e120726fdbb8667e982b38f073/fb0cc33f6619e3e2-f2/s540x810/d92754a0c2ce9b7f681c7ecc5bd81ebb455bf369.jpg)
Disclaimer: This translation is made by me for fandom purposes only. This interview, conducted in 2017, gives major insights on how the sci-fi mecha series 86--EIGHTY-SIX was conceived and written before it eventually won the Dengeki Novel Prize back in 2016.
Please ask my permission and credit me+this post if you will be re-translating this to other languages. PLEASE DO NOT REPOST ON YOUTUBE AND TIKTOK AND PLEASE DO NOT REPOST THE IMAGES ON THIS INTERVIEW. Please take the fan translations here with a grain of salt.
Credits to @Yashamise from Twitter for copies of this Dengeki Bunko Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi magazine.
Erratum: This interview was conducted and printed in 2017, but this Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi magazine is dated 2018 as an advance issue of sorts. This interview has been summarized here. My apologies for the title.
I’m posting my Ko-Fi here as currently, I’ve been having financial trouble regarding my medicine, so if anyone can donate, I would be much grateful for the help, thank you very much.
AN INTERVIEW WITH 86--EIGHTY-SIX AUTHOR ASATO ASATO
“I wrote what I liked, in the way I liked them,” this author says. This tale is filled with the grief from war, the ugliness of racial discrimination, as well as the romance of mechas and of garter belts! In this interview, she reveals to us everything about its roots and its appeal!
Text and Composition: My Street
Illustrator: Shirabii
Translator’s Note: For purposes of this interview translation, the interviewer will be labelled as “MS” for My Street, since they layouted and probably conducted this transcribed interview. Also, for words that have brackets or parenthesis:
{} = implied by context
() = given emphasis/given parenthesis in the interview itself
[] = included in the footnotes/translator’s notes
A robot lover as far as she could remember
MS: Thank you very much for your time today for this interview. It was surprising to learn that the author {for 86--EIGHTY-SIX}, Ms. Asato, is a woman.
ASATO: I get that a lot (haha). My family says the contents of my work is just “the usual {for Asato}” though. I think my Afterwords have the impression they’re written by a woman, and I never hid that in particular (haha).
MS: This year {2018}, 86--EIGHTY-SIX placed first in the New Works category and second in the bunkobon {paperback} category overall. How do you feel about this now?
ASATO: I’m very happy. I knew of KonoRano’s existence [1], so I was hoping {86--EIGHTY-SIX} might be listed there somewhere, but it was a surprise that it placed higher than expected. As I said in this interview’s foreword: “I wrote what I liked, in the way I liked them.” I’m thankful that many readers found it interesting.
MS: For readers who haven’t heard of 86--EIGHTY-SIX, can you give us a summary of this work?
ASATO: It’s a lively, filled-with-clanks story of the protagonist Shin, his merry band of thieves, and their remotely-working-class-president Lena. [2] (LOL)
MS: 86--EIGHTY-SIX is your debut work. Can you tell us about the time you started writing this work?
ASATO: I’ve been writing ever since I can remember, and I started with writing manga {scripts}. I switched to writing novels around before I started junior high school and have been writing them ever since.
MS: You’ve been interested in robots and military-related things ever since elementary school, is that right?
ASATO: Yes, that’s correct. My mother liked {Space Battleship} Yamato [3] and Gundam, and as I have a younger brother, I got into watching and reading anime and manga targeted at boys. I was rarely exposed to anime and manga targeted at girls. We had the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy [4] at home (which I’ve seen many times), and I also watched The Brave Police J-Decker [5] and The Brave Express Might Gaine [6], as well as other shows in The Brave [7] series. The only anime I had watched that is {targeted at girls} is Magic Knight Rayearth [8], which is another story with robots fighting in it (haha).
MS: I reckon such an environment led you to writing 86--EIGHTY-SIX. Can you tell us about your writing process?
ASATO: I originally submitted {works} to the Kadokawa Beans [9] Bunko Newcomer Awards. I avoided the Dengeki Novel Prize as it was rather {too hard to enter} due to the large number of entries [10] there. The novel entry I made on the 21st year of the Dengeki Novel Prize (2014), however, was totally not aimed at women at all, so I didn’t have any other choice but to submit that to said contest, as it has the closest deadline. It was a sci-fi fantasy work, with a theme of redemption, set on a time before and after {a} revolution. At that time, I thought, maybe I can go past beyond the 3rd round of screenings and unexpectedly, maybe placed on a good spot? However, the evaluation I got from the judges were “This is a 100% a work targeted at girls” and “Next time, we hope you will submit a work that should be Dengeki Bunko-like”. As Dengeki Bunko [11] is an all-kinds-of-genre publication, I didn’t know what ‘Dengeki Bunko-like’ even meant. I thought about it a lot but couldn’t figure it out, so I just kept on writing and finished my next entry, which is 86--EIGHTY-SIX.
MS: How did you come up with the idea and structure of 86, a war drama where unmanned drones and “unmanned manned drones” battle each other?
ASATO: I once read a newspaper article whose main message was “It won’t be good if a country sends its citizens to war, but it shouldn’t be a problem if they made an army of foreigners fight in their stead.” In that case, I felt very afraid that other people will be forced to fight instead of us, with the idea of “those aren’t people, but drones” justifying this and everyone just allowing it {to happen}.
MS: As written in Volume 1’s Afterword, looking back at history, it. is true that racism and racial exclusion existed to no small extent. So, why did you decide to incorporate “racism” into your work?
ASATO: Ever since I started writing novels, I have repeatedly written about boundary lines between “human beings and those who are human but not treated as human beings”, with 86--EIGHTY-SIX being in a similar vein. One of the bases for this is probably the class discrimination found in Final Fantasy Tactics [12], for example. A character there, Argath, who is an aristocrat, tells a commoner character: “But the gods have no eyes for chattel! [12]” This line has stayed with me ever since. After that, I continued to write with the motifs of “human beings and livestock in human form” and “human and those considered not humans”. I think BLACK/MATRIX+ [13] influenced me as well. This game deals with ethnic discrimination, set in a world where black-winged people are ruled over by white-winged people. In there, those who were discriminated against were treated harshly. They were treated like livestock, with the game having this line of, “Why is a mere slave like you wearing clothes?”
MS: Do you often play games?
ASATO: When my gaming consoles weren’t connected yet to the Internet, I used to play a lot of RPGs. I’m not good at action games. I did play a lot of Final Fantasy, like Final Fantasy VI, Tactics, VIII, IX, and X [14].
MS: Are there other works which influenced you? I wonder if there’s something similar like the war situation in Knights of Sidonia [15], which was mentioned in Volume 1’s afterword.
ASATO: I often watch a lot of robot shows, Knights of Sidonia included. In addition to the Gundam series mentioned earlier, I also watched Full Metal Panic [16] and Gunparade March: A New Song for the March [17]. It’s not a robot series, but I also have read Battle Faery Yukikaze [18] over and over. I like {literary} structures where the protagonist side is overwhelmingly inferior while the antagonist side is the superior one. I want to see the flow of emotions from the characters more than the fight scenes themselves. I think emotions such as fear, resignation and desperation show more in situations where {characters} are hopelessly in a big disadvantage. Winning a battle by domination can be exhilarating, yes, but those other emotions don’t show as much during that. That’s why I prefer for the protagonists to win through unrefined and tenacious means, rather than them winning by outsmarting {enemies}.

The work’s influences from horror films and in-depth military research
MS: The Legion are getting more ominous, and the deteriorating situation for Shin and his group is putting them on a very big disadvantage, if I’m not mistaken.
ASATO: 86--EIGHTY-SIX has been influenced more by horror movies than robot anime, with it being based on movies such as The Mist [19] and Screamers [20]. Mist is a horror story where the protagonists get trapped in a supermarket due to a mysterious fog and monsters, and the people gradually lose their ability to make rational judgments as they are unable to defend themselves or escape, without any rescue in sight. This horror movie has a great ending, so I’m inviting you all to watch it without further spoilers. 86--EIGHTY-SIX was initially set as a novel about a fog of nanomachines covering the walls outside of the Republic, and the “Legion” being an aggregation of said nanomachines. However, that kind of thing couldn’t exactly be defeated by conventional weapons, so it was rejected at the setting phase. These elements from this setting, however, were retained in the form of Volume 1’s final boss character and the appearance of those electromagnetic jammers clouding the sun.
MS: It’s rather surprising this came from a horror setting.
ASATO: The other {inspiration mentioned earlier}, Screamers, is a sci-fi horror film where autonomous war weapons evolved on their own and went out of control. In 86--EIGHTY-SIX, the Self-Propelled Mines, which look like wounded soldiers, are based on Screamers. The work is rather interesting as one has no ideas who their enemies are and everything else looks suspicious.
MS: So you have a situation like this, and you applied what kind of emotions you want to be shown in that situation, correct?
ASATO: Yes. Looking back, I think I was strongly influenced by the novel Chaos Legion [21] {in this regard}. Shin’s Personal Mark, which has a shovel on it, was influenced by his special ability as well as his role being the “Undertaker” responsible for collecting the fragments of his comrade-in-arms’ {Feldreẞ} units.
MS: The more I hear about it, it seems this work is really packed full of things {you} like.
ASATO: While I was writing this, I played the Black Hawk Down [22] movie repeatedly instead of just background music. It’s also a favorite {movie} of mine.
MS: I would like to ask you about military-related matters. What kind of material did you use for your research?
ASATO: I borrowed all relevant materials I use from the library, so I don’t have any specific references… About racial discrimination, I read materials about Nazi Germany [23], the internment camps in US as well as the 442nd Infantry Regiment [24] and Scroll of Agony: The Warsaw Ghetto Diary [25]. As for the weapons, the Juggernaut and the Legion are based and patterned from tanks, so I’ve read materials dating back from World War II [26] as well as the Gulf War [26], where 120mm tanks were the main weapons used. The Juggernaut’s 57mm cannon wasn’t used very often, so I had a difficult time finding research material for it. The unit itself is based on the M551 Sheridan [27]. This airborne assault tank has aluminum alloy armor, but the Juggernaut reflects the pitiful aspect of said flimsy armor which explodes upon impact by any stray attack.
MS: Why did you make the Juggernaut and the Legion multi-legged tanks?
ASATO: Because it’s romantic! I love multi-legged tanks! My first exposure with them is the X-ATM092 [28], a spider-shaped mobile unit from FFVIII. The loud, resounding footsteps it produced as it chased you away was very scary, and it left this impression of being a symbol of a very powerful weapon. I also like Ghost in the Shell’s Tachikoma [29] and the Tobigumo from the Swallowtail novel series [30]. In reality, multi-legged tank units aren’t really fast enough, and there is too much ground pressure for those to actually carry a 120mm cannon… but I make up for it with my imagination (LOL)
A character that embodies the idea of “to be human” walks alone
MS: Concerning those people called “Eighty-Six”, what do you think it means “to be human”, which you tried to depict in Volume 1?
ASATO: What I tried to depict in this work is “to respect other human beings, and to live without regrets.” However, I don’t think everything I wrote in this main part is actually correct. I think this is the answer the “Eighty-Six” came up with due to the environment they lived in. In Volume 2, the stage now shifts to the Federacy, so the theme there is now what will happen if said environment has changed.
MS: In Volume 2, I see this as a story where the “Eighty-Six”, who managed to get safety for the time being, nevertheless still returned to the battlefield. I think this sentiment was portrayed very well.
ASATO: Volume 3 will focus on what happens inside {Shin’s head} after he made that choice, so please look forward to that. After all, they don’t feel safe even after coming to the Federal Republic of Giad. And the war against the Legion isn’t over yet. Since the Eighty-Six think they will not survive if they don’t fight, I think they will continue to fight until the Legion disappeared. Then… what will they do after the Legion are eventually gone? …They will certainly have to think about that in the future as well.
MS: Do you have a favorite among all the characters?
ASATO: It’s Raiden. Of course, I love the two protagonists, Shin and Lena, but Shin isn’t really a very cooperative character with me, so I have a certain attachment to Raiden, who provides much support. Instead of simply just crafting the plot, I write in a way that captures how each character would act in line with {the type of} world I've created. That’s why I do not know what the characters think, what goals they have, or what pasts they bear unless they “talk” to me. Shin is not the type {of character} to talk about anything in particular, and he doesn’t even say anything much except for his name. It wasn’t until I finished writing that climax of a battle in Volume 1 that I realized what he was fighting for. After I wrote it, I was like, “Huh?! So, this is it?!” and was surprised as the author (LOL).
MS: So, you didn’t think about Shin’s background at first?
ASATO: Yes, that’s right. During that climax, I finally understood {everything} concerning Shin, so I went back on that part and wrote the details that I then added.
MS: So even at the plotting stage, you haven’t put together the {setting and background} for each of the characters?
ASATO: To begin with, when I wrote Volume 1, I haven’t even made a plot. I didn’t even have a story structure in particular, and just wrote while letting the characters act. The first time I finished this volume, the last two pages were still missing, but Shin brought them to me, saying, “Sure enough, write up to this far.”
MS: What happened after Volume 2?
ASATO: I have submitted the plot… but stressed on the important scene that “I won’t know everything until I write it” then submitted it. As a result of this, only the boss character from Volume 3 remained in that plot I submitted. {I caused} my editors a lot of trouble.
MS: How did Frederica (the character) come to be?
ASATO: Frederica is a character with a part further on in the series, so I intended to debut her in Volume 2. As I was writing her, however, it seemed she and Shin have similarities on what they carry on their backs. Since then, she acts as a mirror to Shin. As Shin is a character who is not very good at grasping his own emotions, {I had Frederica} serve as the one who verbalizes those emotions. I wondered then, what does it mean to have a 10-year-old verbalize {another person’s feelings}? (LOL) I simply wanted to show a little girl. In Volume 2, the heroine, Lena, is absent, but I can’t have another girl the same age as her as this volume’s heroine… and so, under this pretext, I brought out {Frederica as} the little girl heroine.
MS: For some reason, I thought there’s other many works featuring little girls in the battlefield.
ASATO: If this were about a real battlefield, it would have been filled with old men. I like older men soldier characters, so that would have been fun to see, but I don’t think readers would find that interesting. Cute little girls adding a touch of color {to a work} is important (LOL).
MS: Did you decide on the setting from the start?
ASATO: The setting was generally decided from the beginning. The scenes were written out as needed. For example, regarding the battlefield, the Legion are ground-based weapons, and it would be troubling if they’re easily eradicated by aircraft weapons. That’s why {I had} the Eintagsfliege, a Legion unit which has jamming, and restricted the use of aircraft and communication devices. This, however, would have prevented Shin and Lena from communicating with each other, so I then devised the special communication device called the Para-RAID.
MS: How deeply did you think about this world’s setting on itself?
ASATO: The necessary scenes have been chosen in detail, otherwise, the rest of the details aren’t fixed. For example, it’s not in the main story, but the Republic’s population has already been decided upon. It’s the reverse with the countries on the edge of the continent that aren’t scheduled to appear, as they might have a Chinese-like culture… that’s all I thought of it right now. There’s also this “sensory tuning”, which hasn’t been written in the setting yet, but is scheduled to be involved in the future part of the plot. However, as I said just a short while ago, the story {as a whole} is influenced greatly by how the characters act, so it depends on them to make the best use of the setting. From this point on, who will survive and who will die… is something that I still don’t know.
MS: Is it still unknown how the war against the Legion will move forward?
ASATO: The basic points {for that} have been decided, with the foreshadowing being built onto step by step. However, it is up to those two, Shin and Lena, if they will follow suit. (LOL)
MS: What about the Legion, then?
ASATO: About the Legion, the setting about them has been solidly established, including the future boss characters. However, I can’t say anything about them yet. Details about them have been foreshadowed little by little. I write hoping the readers will be surprised by this later.
The love for garter belts explodes! A talk about eroticism
MS: Changing the subject, what it is about your particular fixation towards garter belts [31] and pilot suits [32], both of which you spoke so passionately about in your Afterwords?
ASATO: About the pilot suits, on the outline for volume 2, I wrote "I don’t want men’s pilot suits paired with ground-based armaments!!!" using half of the A4 outline paper and submitted that (LOL). I’ve wondered whether pilot suits are really necessary, apart from space or aircraft or even ground battles. I’ve my doubts about it, and with said doubts I don’t want {characters} just wearing pilot suits, even in a robot thing. I do agree with the editor-in-charge about “Female pilot suits are justice!” so Lena wearing a pilot suit is scheduled to appear in the future [32]. After all, the garter belt shows a good place between sexy and cute. I think the eroticism {from the garter belt} dwells in its self-contradictory element: it’s just one additional item {in a set of clothes}, and somehow manages to show more skin―I think that’s the charm of the garter belt. In particular, if the color {of the garter belt} contrasts strongly with the skin color {of the wearer}, the impression of bare skin is more emphasized in spite of the wearer. Because of this, I think it’s wonderful that Shirabii colored the belt part {of Lena’s garter belts} black.
MS: It’s amazing the garter belt drawn by Shirabii has the functions of both a belt and a ring, isn’t it?
ASATO: Furthermore, Lena’s military uniform, a garment that is very much seen in public, has garter belts, which are usually private items, and I think that adds further to her ambivalent charm even more. As a matter of fact, at first, I argued that it would be better if {her} thighs were not visible all the time but could be glimpsed at occasionally, but after a 2 AM discussion with the editors-in-charge while looking at the rough draft of the cover art, they convinced me that “That ‘occasionally’ should be now!”, and we settled on its current form. The ideal situation {we have} was when {Lena} lifts her legs up and a glimpse of the black lace garter can be seen through the slit of {her} dress. However, as Lena is a prim and proper lady, the only situation I can think of where she lifts her legs while wearing a dress is when she is about to wear heels… I’ll have to ask Shin to do his best on this one.
MS: Rather a difficult situation, isn’t it?
ASATO: It’s Shin, after all. Also, a military uniform with pretty boy shorts + sock garters is also cute, and as Theo hasn’t appeared with his military uniform yet, I’m thinking to add that to his outfit now… (LOL). However, middle-aged soldier uncles shouldn’t show their bare legs with shirt garters! (Editor’s note: Please Google “shirt garters” for more info)
MS: Are there any {role/inspiring} models for your characters?
ASATO: Basically, none. However, as mentioned earlier, Shin is partly inspired by Sieg Wahrheit [33] from Chaos Legion, while Lena is partly inspired by General Garrison [34] from Black Hawk Down. In the film, {Garrison} is placed on a situation where he could do nothing but only communicate with his subordinates in adverse circumstances, and this inspired Lena’s position {in the series}. In Black Hawk Down, many characters died before we even understood them, and I think that influenced 86--EIGHTY-SIX as well.
MS: That’s right. They die when the chapters change. When you are writing, you’re writing without knowing who is going to die, isn’t it?
ASATO: There are some characters whose manner of death came to mind as I was writing them. I think they’re good kids, but I have no choice but to let them face their fates (oops).
MS: If the names of the Eighty-Six characters were names of Japanese people, would they still make good names?
ASATO: Yes. All their names can be written in kanji. For example, Shin’s surname, “Nouzen” is from the kanji of the Chinese trumpet creeper (凌霄花) {pronounced as “nouzenkazura”} [35]. I actually like the arrangement of the kanji {from that plant} within the kanji for “surpassing the sky” (霄を凌ぐ) {pronounced as “sora wo shinogu”}. If you use the same kanji and put the honorific (君) {pronounced as “kun”} on it, you can form the characters for the Eurasian goshawk (凌霄君) {pronounced as “ryoshoukun”} [36]. This is also a reference to Shin’s image, as he does resemble a hawk.
What’s next for this series? There’s so much more to write about!
MS: What will happen in Volume 3 of 86--EIGHTY-SIX? [37]
ASATO: It will be properly connected to Volume 1’s Epilogues, so please don’t worry about that. The battle scenes, which were limited in Volume 2, will be much increased here. It might be even tragic.
EDITOR KIYOSE: This paperback series will, of course, continue to be serialized, and the series will also be expanded into various adaptations such as comics [38] and other various media. This work will have a lot of side stories, so we hope you will all appreciate this series as a whole.
MS: Can you please tell us about the future developments of 86--EIGHTY-SIX?
ASATO: The stage has shifted to the Federacy from Volume 2, and as the war situation gets more violent, the environment surrounding the Eighty-Six and the others is about to deteriorate further. There will be new enemies for mankind to face, and their own numerous personal conflicts standing on their way one by one. However, they have survived far difficult circumstances up until now, and since Lena will join them in earnest by Volume 4, I think they will still survive, stubbornly, shamelessly, and boisterously. However, I really wouldn’t know what would happen unless I write them. (LOL)
MS: How many volumes does this series will have?
ASATO: Currently, I'm thinking of around 13 volumes. The war against the Legion has a general flow and an ending in sight already, so I'd like to get to that point first. In addition to that, I’d like to like to write a side story about Raiden and Shin when they just first met, if I have the opportunity [39]. There’s so much more I want to write about. From Volume 4 onward, countries other than the Federacy will be related, and there’s plans to stretch out the stage even more. The Queen's Knights [40], led by Lena, will also make their appearance. I think there might be some slight surprises about Shiden, who first appeared in Volume 2.
MS: Lastly, any message for the readers who have supported you and the series?
ASATO: I was never active on the web at all, and I was totally an unknown newcomer writer. I believe the reason why I and the 86--EIGHTY-SIX series have come this far is due to the readers who picked up the books and supported us. So, everyone, I will do my best to write bringing Shin and Lena and the Eighty-Six’s battle to conclusion, so from this point on, I look forward to your continued support!

The work also has this multi-legged armored tank called “Tobigumo”. So far as I know this mecha doesn’t have official art, however, a fanart can be found in Pixiv here.
[31] [Magazine Note 9] Garter: They’re suspenders of sorts. “Garter belt” is the term for {a fabric strap which} which is clipped on over-the-knee socks or stockings. Having no shorts above garters is righteous! between the rich and the poor, became very much a hot topic during its time.
Asato’s interest in garter belts is not only shown in the novels, but also in the anime, which is noted to have a lot of thigh shots of Lena wearing said garter belts.
[32] [Magazine Note 10] Pilot suit: In this case, this is the type of suit that sticks really close to the body. As it shows the body lines quite clearly, it’s considered quite fetishistic.
In the current time, 86--EIGHTY-SIX Volume 5: Death, Be Not Proud, has already been published, and Lena did wear the Cicada, which is Asato’s homage to pilot suits.
[33] Sieg Wahrheit: the protagonist of Chaos Legion.
[34] William F. Garrison: a retired major general of the United States Army who commanded United States forces during Operation Gothic Serpent including the Battle of Mogadishu, which served as an inspiration for the novel Black Hawk Down.
[35] The Chinese trumpet creeper, a native flowering vine species found in East Asia, usually in China, can mean “fame”, “honor”, “glory”, “abundant love” and “life filled with flowers” in the flower language.
[36] Eurasian goshawk: a medium-large bird-of-prey found in Europe and Asia and is among the species considered as “true” hawks. The kanji used in the article actually just refers to how Shinei Nouzen looks like a hawk, but upon further examination of said kanji in this reference, it pertained to that goshawk as well.
[37] Volume 3 of 86--EIGHTY-SIX was just about to be released in Japan around the moment this article was published, serving as a promotion of sorts.
[38] Several manga adaptations of 86--EIGHTY-SIX have been published as of current time. For more information, please check out this 86 Reddit Manga FAQ for further details.
[39] Besides Volume 1, Eighty-Six’s Interlude: Headless Knight II, Asato has managed to write this in the side stories Volume 10, Fragmental Neoteny Chapter 8: The Banks of Lethe and Alter.1: Claymore Squadron.
[40] The Queen’s Knights, formally known as the Brísingamen Squadron, was the squadron Lena became the Handler with after the Spearhead Squadron was sent on the Special Reconnaissance Mission. It was led by Shiden Iida and was pivotal in the Republic of San Magnolia’s defense during the 1st Legion Large Scale Offensive.

vash
best believe he does a little squel when he sees your works
he ADORES all of the little animal, fruit, veggie, whatever you make plushies you make and squeezes the living hell out of it in excitement
if you like gift giving, he will gladly show it off, keeping them on his bags as keychains, putting it on his table, hell even on his ears if he wants to feel silly
he's also the type to send those good morning messages with the small plush that you made sitting right next to his plate of eggs and bacon
and when you make a tiny version of him, he thinks he died and went to heaven (not literally though i haven't read the manga bro isn't dead right)
it is the most cutest fcking thing he has ever seen in his life, you even got down to the shade of his hair and coat!
for funsies, you would defitenely make his gun and he would scream if you added something that could make tiny him hold it
he would hug you and the plushie at the same time to thank you
he will cherish this gift forever
just know if anybody ever sees it and mskes fun of it, he'll just say that they don't have a wonderful, most coolest person to make plushies for them and fake cries to make fun of them and run off to giggle
gives it silly nicknames like vashie or vash the junior
wolfwood
would grip the ever living shit out of your plushies as if they'll respond
he thinks it's a cute hobby (and that you're cute too
i see him as a guy who just fucks with it, you do you
would buy you materials if you ever run out and you would panic every single time if you think you're running out but a new fresh batch (the exact same colour too!) would pop up in your sewing basket!
he doesn't admit this though, he thinks he's slick
he keeps some in his pockets and gives them to children if they're in need of a small companion/ cheer them up
very much suprising you when kids come at your doorstep to thank you for the plushies and they would grin in thanks
but his favourite one is the tiny version of him, how adorable
he places it into his pocket like it was his kid and brings it everywhere, so if he ever wants to pull out a cigeratte to smoke, he would always have to push away tiny him deeper into his pocket to get at his box of cigerattes
calls it little guy
knives
he doesn't have a need of plushies, it clogs up his space, he finds it useless
second chill guy? he doesn't care at all of what you do and he doesn't bother with your gifts, keeping it into a basket at first
until you made effort in creating a tiny version of himself to which he scoffs in amusement
and hey!! there's detachable blade coils, isn't that fun???!?!?
you have to look at him closely for a reaction, just a tense constipated look of focus on what you've done, intricate details of his suit means he kinda likes it (he doesn't want to admit he finds this action cute whether friend or spouse, it was nice to receive something that was really worked hard on especially when it was him, literally)
there was also a slight twitch of his lips, a quick lift at the end like he wanted to smile but he didn't want to give you the pleasure
(he find your methaphorical droppy ears on your head funny, what a meanie)
he keeps it on his piano, although he finds it bothersome when it falls face flat because of the piano's vibrations or his tiny him blade coils making it heavy on the back, he still likes keeping it close
he goes through that same basket of what you sewed for him and gradually the plushies you thought he threw/dump it elsewhere were now popping up in every corner of the house as decoration (atleast there was some use..? right?)
vash calls it little nai (knives doesn't do nicknames)

The difference between filler and padding is that filler is new shit the animation team came up with, new stories or dialogue and general stuff, whereas padding is when animators greatly extend a short scene with lots of shots and reactions and waiting.
Dragonball Z has both but its primary issue is filler. Toei made up a lot of stuff which isn't wholly consistent, they added scenes which characterise the cast differently to the source material's intentions. The countless Gohan bravery moments are the most egregious, really, because they try to make him very heroic when Toriyama did not give a shit. But you also have lots of scenes in original Dragonball, and lots of scenes with side characters like Bulma, Chichi, Yamcha. You have an entire filler saga in Garlic Junior arc which was pretty bad, you have Fake Namek. Some of these things are good and add substance but a lot of them make DBZ feel completely different to the manga, and I can imagine it being frustrating if you're a manga reader.
Then there's One Piece which is much worse because they're not even making up new stuff, theyre just making countless scenes that take 1 panel instead take ten fucking minutes!!! It's absolute madness!! And the reason it's worse is because it can't be skipped, it can barely even be trimmed down.
There is a project called One Pace which aims to remove all filler from one piece, and as much padding as possible. It's cut the series runtime down by about 50%. It's still not enough.
Usually that would make the One Pace manga the objectively better experience compared to the anime, whereas the Dragonball anime might add scenes that feel missing from the manga and add more value. But i feel that when the One Piece anime works, it works so well. Oda's panelling can be more than a bit cluttered, so the high effort we've been getting with the anime adds much needed clarity. In some scenes, the slower buildup and the swelling of music and the wonderful voice acting bring One Piece to life in such a way that the manga cannot achieve.
It's a deep shame it has so much trashy padding and that every flashback is shown in full instead of the quick snapshots that Oda provides with the manga. Sometimes the anime hammers something home so many times that I become sick and tired hearing about it. Dear god I was so sick of Wano even before we reached Onigishima hell.

you were the first friend soobin made at university. it was welcome week, freshman year and of course you approached him. how could he walk up to someone like you first? you were so pretty, kind to strangers and just overall lighting up every room you walked into. he had seen you in a few different spots on campus before you made the effort to talk to him. he just watched your every move, kinda like eye candy. always admiring you from afar.
“hey, you’re the boy from the gaming cafe right? soobster553?” you spoke to him as he sat in the library reading.. bunny girl senpai manga? he followed your line of sight, closing the book and turning it face down. “uh, yeah? that’s me” he nervously responded. “you left your shit logged in, don’t worry i closed everything out for you” taking a seat next to him you went on “bunny girl senpai? what is that?” you asked, actually interested. “it’s a manga” he simply said. “yeah, no shit i can see that” your crude language got the boy flashing his signature bunny smile. “you know, you kinda look like a bunny” the boy smiled even wider.
you introduced soobin to your friend group and he practically followed you everywhere like a puppy. it was cute though, you didn’t mind. soobin was sweet, respectful and always looked out for you. you two were total opposites and that’s exactly why you clicked.
✧ ˚ · .
fast forward to your junior year and you laid on his bed, hanging your head upside down trying to get your best friend’s attention. “soooob come on, i’m bored” you whined. he took his headset off and deadpanned at you. “you’re playing video games, ignoring me, and i can’t even see the screen because your big ass is in the way” you whined once more.
soobin wanted you in his bed and whining but not under these circumstances. he makes a mental note to be more specific with his manifestations next time. “y/n you ever heard of parallel play? now all of a sudden you wanna watch me play league?” he looked at you squinting his eyes, not believing a damn thing you had to say. “no but, i'm out of options for entertainment soooo” you trailed off and walked over to his desk.
soobin took the hint and moved over an inch in his gaming chair, a poor attempt to make room for you. you frowned at his stupidity. “soob do you see this ass?” he didn’t know if he was supposed to look or not but he did anyway, respectfully. “i’m not fitting in that tiny space to sit” you plopped down on his lap. soobin froze and went wide eyed, not knowing where to put his hands. he held his breath as you shifted and leaned your back against his chest to get comfortable. “is this alright?” you turned your head back a bit, breath fanning his cheek. “yeah, ‘ts fine” he barely whispered
“you were off your game today soob. hopefully when you teach me how to play, you carry your team like usual” you say to him as you bid your goodbyes. “y/n you’re fucking mean to me you know?” he jokes with you. “yeah yeah, im such a bitch whatever you probably call me worse to your guy friends” you joke back, playfully pushing his shoulder. “i would never. see you next week loser” he hugs you tight, squeezing your waist. “see you soob” and with that he’s closing his apartment door, letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
going back to his gaming chair, he immediately pulls up his porn tab and gets to work. putting his hand down his pajama pants and thinking of none other than you. your hair smelled so good and it was the only thing he could focus on thus fucking up multiple rounds in league of legends. he got such a good view of your ass today. it was only a split second or two but who’s counting?
soobin wanted to fondle you, put his face in it. shit he wanted you to sit on his face. it’s a miracle he was able to control himself with you sitting on his clothed cock. as his fist pumped up and down his shaft, he envisioned your small hands, and your fucking teasing voice. you. you. you. anything that was you, would get him off. “fuck y/n. right there princess. please. fuck” he croaked. “soooob come on” he recalled your innocent whining from earlier and using it for something so sinister.
that did it for him and he spurted his white streams of cum onto his hand and pants. he didn’t stop there. no, of course not. he milked himself until he was whining and tears were brimming his eyes. when he finally opened his eyes to witness the mess he made, he sighed in frustration. what would you think of him, knowing that he just choked his dick to every innocent interaction you had today? you’d probably hate him, tell your friends what a fucking freak nasty pervert he was. even go as far as never talking to him ever again. he couldn’t stomach the thought of it.
✧ ˚ · .
“he told me i was the prettiest girl he’s ever seen and he said it like he meant it” you gushed about how you and taehyun have been texting each other lately. which was not in anyway romantic, it’s so obvious the guy was trying to get in your pants. apparently he was taking you out on a date tonight and you wanted to get all your jitters out beforehand so you called soobin over.
he had to listen to you go on and on about his friend when he so desperately wanted it to be him. “i’m sorry, my room is a wreck. i wanted to wear my pink dress but taehyun seems like he’d like the black one more but i couldn’t find the black one and-” jesus fuck you were a nervous rambling mess. “fuck, i forgot to put on eyeliner” you ran to the bathroom, shutting the door behind you.
truth is, you looked so sexy in that pink dress. fuck what taehyun liked, what about what soobin liked? you wore it with pretty thigh harnesses, and dainty jewelry. the baby pink aesthetic for something so adult and whore-like drove him crazy. he couldn’t think about being mad at taehyun when all he could think about was taking you there, and ruining you til you couldn’t babble anything but variations of his name.
soobin scanned your messy room and pink lace sticking out of your top drawer piqued his interest. he looked at the closed bathroom door, making sure there was no sign of you. once the coast was clear, he went to the drawer and pulled out the lacey fabric. there was no time to examine it, he stuffed them deep in his pocket for later.
“i promise i’ll tell you all about it when i get back” you sincerely told him. “i can’t wait, i hope you have fun” soobin was bitter as fuck. he kept the smile as much as he could but how could you? how could you possibly choose his friend over him?
✧ ˚ · .
soobin wasted no time pulling your pink lace panties out of his pocket as soon as he got home. sniffing them like all of the oxygen on planet earth was running out. he laid on his bed, once again pulling his cock out to the thought of you. he fisted the fabric and pushed it up to his nose as far as he could, inhaling and exhaling. he choked his dick and thought of you in that pink dress from earlier. he wanted to cum all over it, ruin it so you couldn’t see taehyun. better yet taehyun see you stained with his love, make him back off and be taken by who you belonged to. soobin.
“god you fucking bitch. picking taehyun over me, he’s nothing. i could fuck you so much better than him mmm” he moaned and spat as he sped his hand up. “y/n. y/n. ugh fuck. please baby” he began saying your name over and over again. he put the fabric over the tip of his dick while cumming, completely soiling it.
the act of ruining your panties without your knowledge riled him up even more. soobin looked at your stolen item in awe. he wanted- no. he needed more.
✧ ˚ · .
“the date was fine but i don’t think we’re gonna work out” you broke the news to soobin and his ears perked up. “really? how come” he bit back a smile. “ahhh i dunno. it kinda just felt like he wanted to sleep with me. i know that’s your friend and all but i’m looking for an actual boyfriend these days” you explained it pretty clearly. atta girl, so smart and always coming to your senses. soobin just nodded his head in understandment. in reality he was over the fucking moon. he needed to do something to celebrate.
you fell asleep during the movie night like always, your backside pressed up against soobin. he laid there stiff, weighing his options of dry humping you into oblivion while you slept or just going in your room to steal another pair of your panties. you were so pretty, even when you slept. perfect pouty lips, wet from your slight drool. your strands of hair blowing faintly from your breathing. god it wouldn’t be fair to take you like this, that’s beyond wrong. you’re his friend, he can’t take advantage of you like that.
he got up ever so softly and quietly to not wake you. shuffling into your room, he went straight for your drawer like last time. this time, he opened it fully and boy was he in heaven. different colors, fabrics, and designs all with your signature scent. your hint of laundry detergent and your everyday perfume that he couldn’t get enough of.
he shuffled his hands through the entire drawer then picked up a handful. soobin was playing a dangerous game but he couldn’t bring himself to think straight. he brought the bundle to his nose and deeply inhaled your faint aroma almost immediately sporting a boner. he let out a pathetic whimper in response to the delectable scent that he couldn’t get enough of.
“what the fuck are you doing?” soobin almost jumped out his skin seeing you in the doorway. how long have you been standing there? why didn’t he hear you get up? probably too pussy drunk to notice his surroundings.
“are you sniffing my panties? is that why my pink lace one is missing?!” you slowly walked up toward him. oh no, you’re fucking angry at him. “no? i swear, i don’t have them” was all soobin could say and his lie was so bad, not even he believed it. you snatched the bundle of underwear from him. “you’re a fucking pervert! have you been doing this the whole time? i thought you were my friend!” you yelled at him some more which turned him on beyond belief. once he locked eyes with you, he instantly regretted everything. you were crying. “get out. i’m fucking serious, go. don’t ever talk to me again” you uttered the sentence soobin had been terrified of hearing.
what the fuck did he just do?

Frankly, I've always found it strange, myself included, why Levi never mentions Isabel and Farlan. For example we don't even see them in the flashbacks where he remembers his comrades. But if I had to think of the most logical reason I could think of, it's more likely that it's because they're not characters of Yams own creation. No Regrets is a script that Yams commissioned someone else to write for the Levi background, a spinoff that was not written by Isayama himself, and the characters there are not Yams characters, except for Levi and Yams characters.
In one of the interviews I read about No regrets, I read that Isayama wanted this story to be written/drawn because he wanted a spinoff that was more about how Levi joined Survey corps. That's exactly what it is, if I remember what was written correctly. Maybe you've seen it too. My point is this, Perhaps the reason Isayama never mentions Farlan and Isabel in his own story is because they are not his characters, but also because both Farlan and Isabel and No Regrets itself, are more of background tools on how Levi joined Sc.
Hi! How are you?
Yeah, I think that's a very possible and logical answer. I would 100% believe that would be the reason if other characters were mentioned more frequently. I would be like, "Why does Levi constantly talk or think in this or that character and not Farlan and Isabel?" But overall, I still kinda stick to my idea that we hardly even see any other "remarkable" characters as "flashbacks" from the veterans, and we never hear even Levi mention them. Not just Levi; almost all the characters do not mention other characters overall.
I dare to say that's mostly an "economical" situation. Probably Isayama wasn't allowed to have any extra scenes or do "fill up" chapters to showcase other characters talking about their lives, their thoughts, etc. Like, as an example, I can't recall a single chapter in the manga or anime where Erwin talks about Mike, for example, and it's well-known that they were very close. Hange is the same. I hardly think that Levi or anyone actually actively thinks or mentions other characters in the story unless it's an "emotional or plot-wise" moment, like recalling fallen comrades, like Marco, etc.
I think that was mostly my point of view on the issue. Levi doesn't think about Farlan or Isabel, but because Levi or any other SNK character thinks or mentions other characters beside strict plot-wise necessity, and it's obvious that Farlan and Isabel aren't "plot-wise" necessities. I personally think that most of the "relationships" between characters can be "assumed" by how they interact in "spin-offs" like chibis and "junior high." I think they serve a bit to fill up that void with also the "game's extras stories etc."
Which, and this is already me rambling, I had always found it strange that it's showcased in official art, chibis, junior high, etc., that the veterans were rather close, but during the Uprising Arc, Levi mentions Kenny to Hange and they knew absolutely nothing about him. I think it would have been a nice touch, not only for Hange but for any "veteran," if Levi decided to be "100% honest" about his childhood, like telling being raised by Kenny, they could act like, "You mentioned before a bit about it but I never imagined you were talking about Kenny the ripper." A sort of "oh, you told us a bit about your past but never in detail and now that's plot-wise important, we get the details, we understand it a bit more because we are close to you than the rest but that 'extra information' isn't important enough for the reader to be aware of it but my knowledge about it showcases my closeness to you" sort of thing? I don't know if that makes sense; that's what I mean that for me Isayama lacks a bit in the writing relationship departments because those little details are so subtle but mean so much.
Anyways, the good thing is that we can fill that void with fanfics!
