Oh, what a lovely chapter! Hugo mercifully takes us back in time once again and starts the 5 June once again. We have already experienced it through Marius, then Gavroche, and now through Bossuet, Joly, and Grantaire! And we also get a chance to learn more about bini! These two “lived together, ate together, slept together. They had everything in common, even Musichetta, to some extent.” They are adorable! Why do we learn about this so late?
And these three are uninterested in attending the funeral, much like Marius. Speaking about Marius… they gossip about him! Grantaire’s assessment of Marius’ love affair is spot on – it’s almost supernatural! “Marius is a fog, and he must have found a vapor… Ecstasies in which they forget to kiss. Pure on earth, but joined in heaven. They are souls possessed of senses. They lie among the stars.” This perfectly captures what is happening between Marius and Cosette.
Oh, god! Grantaire's descent into intoxication to the point of near-death is genuinely distressing. Though, now I will know that wine is white magic [pouring myself a glass of white magic]. So, wine did not suffice for him, and he wouldn’t have minded some stronger substance like opium or hashish, but he didn’t have them on hand! I don’t recall this from my previous reading. And he had to settle for a mixture of brandy, stout, and absinthe. Wow, that’s some black magic indeed.
And we also meet Gavroche’s fellow gamin and friend, Navet. Following Enjolras’ instructions, Navet calls Bossuet to join the company at the funeral. Poor Joly has the flue and is not ready to go out into the rain. Grantaire feels slighted that Enjolras did not send for him: “If he had come for me, I would have followed him. So much the worse for Enjolras! I won’t go to his funeral.” So they all stay and continue to drink.
Then, a barricade comes to them. When Bossuet shouts to Courfeyrac, Hugo ominously remarks that the Rue de la Chanvrerie was “not more than a gunshot long.” That’s it.

14 Associations - Paris
Tumblr media
I was tagged by @allyennah and @shroudkeeper, ty both for the tag!
this is going under the cut but I'll be tagging @dragonsongmakhali @uldahstreetrat @the-unending-journey and @archaiclumina (no pressure in doing this, feel free to skip if you've already done it!)
cw: alcohol abuse mention
animal: snake; serpents have an overall negative reputation across the world, but they can symbolize good and positive things. snakes symbolize rebirth, transformation, and healing. this is a common motif for paris
color: green, in a positive and negative lens. obviously paris has green eyes, a symbol of their extended family, but green can symbolize youth and regeneration. paris is still growing, still learning new things, and each day is a challenge. but green can mean envy and poison. paris' surname is wormwood, which is believed to be derived from the artemisia plant for its dark green color and bitter taste
song: half asleep by low roar. despite paris having a metal/hard rock inspired aesthetic, this song perfectly captures their more melancholic side with its haunting first half but hopeful second half. the lyrics and melody reflect their more somber mood
number: 9. in numerology, 999 is an 'angel number' that symbolizes a cycle's end and beginning, a time for renewal, reconnection, forgiveness, and acceptance
day or night: night; when everyone is asleep, paris is most active at night due to insomnia and racing thoughts. their fears and inseucrities are laid out in the open for their eyes only
plant: the artemisia plant, once again pointing at their surname for symbolism. there are many species of artemisia; most are extremely bitter to eat, but it can be brewed as an alcoholic beverage. paris tends to drink in quiet moments to drown out the bitter feeling within them. the plant is believed to treat and cure many illnesses and ailments, which symbolizes paris' job as the warrior of light to solve everyone's problems, big or small
smell: petrichor, a sweet and earthy smell that symbolizes paris' early life. it symbolizes a child playing in mud puddles after a summer storm or bundled up inside a cozy cottage to escape a chilly autumn downpour. it used to be a positive, now it's always associated negatively with paris' depression
gemstone: alexandrite, one of june's birthstones. it's believed to have many spiritual properties, and it can bring balance and creativity to a person's life
season: fall/autumn, the start of the end. autumn is a time of reflection, maturity, and preservation. paris is not all the way dead metaphorically as with winter, they're still clinging to a sense of self like autumn leaves, and yet they still wilted
place: a home they could no longer see or go back to, their childhood home in the now decimated west shroud
food: anything savory. savory dishes and foods are what reminds paris of home; full meals with spices and flavors that were made with love for a growing child
astro sign: gemini (irl) / oschon (in-game). paris has two sides of themself, the one that's most prominent is their facade of the aloof and short-temepered adult. the other is one they never show, one that's a scared and lonely child that still cries for their parents. oschon symbolizes paris' need for travel, to run away from the memories that still haunt them
element: air, symbolizing intelligence and freedom for most. but air, under the four humors, is associated with the liver. further still people like plato and other languages believed that the liver holds man's strongest and darkest emotions, which paris expresses a lot of
drink: absinthe, the green fairy. it's paris' favored alcoholic beverage ever since they were a teen, but they don't drink just for fun. while many of the myths surrounding absinthe and its hallucinogenic properties have been debunked in real life, in a world of fantasy it's a popular spirit for those who wish to forget their woes and heartache via illusion. the bitter drink is doused in sugar to make it more appealing for the downtrodden. paris is not a heavy drinker, but at times they abuse and binge the beverage to cope

Messidor
Fifth in my series of images inspired by the French Republican Calendar. Messidor, which corresponds with the 30 day period from roughly June 20th (the Summer Solstice) to July 20th, is named for the harvest. It is the first summer month, followed by Thermidor and Fructidor.
Among wild plants harvested during Messidor is wormwood, the key ingredient to make absinthe. In honor of the month, I imagined a 19th century absinthe maker foraging wormwood flowers and leaves growing wild along a seaside path in Provence.

A R T E M I S • the lunar ointments are poured and cooling. You know the artemisias are my favorite to work with and this new ointment is full of my homegrown wormwood, mugwort, and sage. I’ve melted in white copal and scented it with ylang ylang and jasmine to soften its herbaceous absinthe notes. It’ll be in the Sun & Moon kits out June 11th.

By NME
7th June 1999
Blur‘s Alex James, The Auteurs‘ Luke Haines, Black Box Recorder‘s John Moore and ex-Pulp man Russell Senior, now of Venini, all appear at this year’s Clerkenwell Literary Festival at various venues around London from July 12-18.
NME‘s Steven Wells and Tommy Udo also appear in the week of events, along with Sean Hughes, Annie Nightingale, Billy Childish, Keith Allen, Louis Theroux and Adam and Joe, who are also on the panel of an ‘anti-drinking evening’ along with the absinthe-importing Moore.
Alex James will be reading from Kevin Sampson‘s new novel about the music industry, Powder, and Haines and Senior will debate the topic ‘Pop Lyrics: Meaning And Content’. It is thought that Jarvis Cocker might also attend. For tickets, call 0171 771 2000.
-----------------------
I have no other information on this but the idea of Luke Haines and Russell Senior debating anything is very interesting indeed.

intersection considerations
Shall I ask the daylight to wear a cloak of absinthe and paint a coat of amber across her dry-cracked lips?
Shall I beseech the forest canopy to part her branches a little wider so your caravan can warm up your numb hands?
Shall I distract the well wishers while you divert the water into the growing sands and scoop up all the blue flowers from the braided ringlets in your hair?

june july august - i was barely in my second decade. our first sunset in madrid was dulled by smoke and wine. we met two others in the hotel lobby, same mindset, same dumb habits. time raced ahead. i spent so much of it searching for breakages in myself, filled the fissures with cheap cigs and cocaine. miracle how we transcend language so quickly in selfishness. nothing quite prepared me for the days after and if i'm perfectly honest i wish i had written more than those few words to her. the comedown hit me hardest in rome where you fed me peeled oranges. you had a pomegranate and i remember it staining. how funny is all this poetry now. we laughed so hard about nothing at all. tall brown beautiful. they liked you a lot. i did too. we kissed at that party a year later and it never meant much. sometimes i wonder if we did the right thing, running away when we should have stayed, each one searching for not the other. we rode to amalfi along the cliffside, dove into the ocean and met all those faces. lunch in paris, dinner in amsterdam, fireworks and storms and trash to my knees. i smoked so much weed it became an echo, drank so much absinthe i forgot to call home. it all sounds like hell now. some things insane. guess we've changed a lot. we parted in london and i slept with my host. somehow it was the loneliness time of my life. those freezing bus rides and winding white crowds, so far from anything familiar. i bought a cheap jacket and we smoked hookah that night. fka twigs was dancing on stage before anything mattered and i remember getting lost in the city on my way back. no phone. no nothing. she found me, you didn't, and he called, but i ran. jesus christ, what was the point of all this. i don't know but the room is spinning spinning spinning

The Cellars of Sulis Hall - a WIP intro
Form: novel
Status: Outlined, a few thousand words written on my laptop, a few more in notebooks
Genre: Gothic horror, historical
Age Group: Adult
Themes/vibes/tropes: love letter to the Gothic, sibling friendship and rivalry, feminist horror, Late Georgian Bath (as in the city in South West England)
Without giving too much away, I highly recommend arachnophobes avoid this and filter #tcosh
SUCCESSION in the style of NORTHANGER ABBEY with horror
Synopsis: Bath, 1804. Phoebe Matthews has always try to put the fact she’s the bastard daughter of an unfaithful Baronet and legendary actress behind her - but when her father at long last acknowledges her and invites her to his estate at Sulis Hall, she eagerly accepts.
Unnerved by the peculiar house and ostracised by her legitimate half-siblings, Phoebe’s only real solace is her future in-law, the once widowed, elegant and witty Mrs Blexham. But as she notices more and more strange things about Sulis Hall, and the cellar that her ailing father forbids her from approaching, Phoebe grows to suspect something terrible has happened here - and is still happening right now…
Progress notes: This might not take shape for a little while. It’s in the queue to prioritise after Wormwood - but I like to be prepared. But it’s going to be a lot of fun (and a lot of research!)

[ID: A landscape image of a wall painted green with a window to the left. To the right is a painting of a woman with red hair and a green dress drubbing absinthe. Written above her on the wall is “Absinthe”, written below her is “La Fee Verte”, and next to her pointing left is a red arrow. Overlain is white text in a 1960s style font that says “Wormwood”, and underneath in smaller text reads “A WIP Intro by Malandanti.” ]
WORMWOOD - A WIP Intro
Progress: 2/3 drafted so far
Age range: Adult
Genre: Gothic, Historical, light Occult Horror, dark - dark academ - I cannot say it 🤢
What to expect: messy female leads, almost all female cast, writing about writers, feminism, mothers and daughters, family rivalry, the culture of the late 60s into the early 70s, decadence, hedonism, and decay, Bunny by Mona Awad meets Hangsaman by Shirley Jackson
Synopsis: Noel Seabright only ever had one ambition: to attend the renowned all-female Judith and Her Maidservant College as her mother did before her - even though it drove her mad. Once accepted and overwhelmed by a new society of liberated, cultured and intelligent women, she fervently clings to her sanity, ostracised most of all by Olivia Fitzroy, the aloof student living one door away - and the strange Wormwood Society that she belongs to.
A group of long haired, absinthe-drinking, LSD tripping intellectuals, Noel observes from afar. But when she discovers her mother’s own connection, and finds herself drawn to Olivia’s unpredictable behaviour, she resolves to claw her way in - even if only to bring it all down.
If you saw the old one, no you didn’t - WW is not YA, it’s adult! ANYWAY this is my baby, one I have tried and failed to introduce before, and I just love writing it. I fucking hate having to redo my intro post though.

Hmmmmmmmm not sure how to articulate but not sure how I feel about the idea of minimal prose being inherently bad which some of your posts are veering close to…it doesn’t have to be your cup of tea or anything but let’s not equate minimal prose with bad writing as though it can’t ever be well done and it’s not a skill in and of itself

[ID: a photograph of a field of red and white flowers with a vintage style filter overlaid. White text in a whimsical font reads “Malandanti”, with “A Writeblr Introduction” in slightly smaller text underneath.]
Hi Writeblr! Call me Flo - this isn’t my first time on writeblr, but since forgetting the passcode for my old account I decided to start over on a clean slate etc etc…
A bit about me - I’m still finalising what pen name to use, I’m 23 years old and use she/her. I’m from the UK and currently in a limbo of possibly doing a postgraduate degree. I like writing gothic fiction above all, especially horror, with a soft spot for fantasy but, like with reading, I have an open mind with almost any genre. It’s here I would list the authors who I’ve been inspired by but that list is getting long but the two at the top of the list would be Shirley Jackson and Carmen Maria Machado. I have other interests - namely music from a few decades ago now - so expect to see that here as well.
My current projects are:
Maternity Colony - a short story I’ve just finished the second draft of. It’s about a young library assistant in a South Wales mining village in 1986 growing desensitised to the nightly hauntings in his and his mother’s house. Featuring my love for the goth subculture, early modern superstition and pathetic men. Tag: #mc
Wormwood - a novel draft I’m about 2/3 through and hoping to get completed asap. It’s about a group of girls in an exclusive society at a prestigious girl’s arts and humanities college on a fictional channel island, during the years 1968-71. Dark academia but they’re hippies and there’s a little bit of horror. Tag: #ww
The Cellars of Sulis Hall - working title, but it’s sitting there fully outlined and is what I’m set to move on to after Wormwood. Set in 1804, on the outskirts of Bath, an illegitimate daughter of a Baronet reconnects with her dying father and legitimate siblings at their estate and unearths a horrific secret - classic gothic stuff, with more spiders. Tag: #tcosh
The Holy and the Damned - this is just for fun. I might be very slow writing it but I feel like I’ll be posting about it a lot. It’s my little fantasy inspired by the early modern religious Reformation and beliefs surrounding witchcraft that I’m not good at summarising. Tag: #thatd
Thank you all for reading my intro, and I hope the community will have me back!

My #1 post of 2022
Saw a booktok review for a lesbian book that panned it because it “didn’t depict the lesbian experience, only how this one character feels” and realised how fundamentally broken the view on representation actually is
