A big locomotive has pulled into town, Heavy, humungus, with sweat rolling down, A plump jumbo olive. Huffing and puffing and panting and smelly, Fire belches forth from her fat cast iron belly.

Poof, how she's burning, Oof, how she's boiling, Puff, how she's churning, Huff, how she's toiling. She's fully exhausted and all out of breath, Yet the coalman continues to stoke her to death.

Numerous wagons she tugs down the track: Iron and steel monsters hitched up to her back, All filled with people and other things too: The first carries cattle, then horses not few; The third car with corpulent people is filled, Eating fat frankfurters all freshly grilled. The fourth car is packed to the hilt with bananas, The fifth has a cargo of six grand pi-an-as. The sixth wagon carries a cannon of steel, With heavy iron girders beneath every wheel. The seventh has tables, oak cupboards with plates, While an elephant, bear, two giraffes fill the eighth. The ninth contains nothing but well-fattened swine, In the tenth: bags and boxes, now isn't that fine?

Week 5: The Deep (1977)

The film The Deep from 1977 is about an undersea adventure with a couple who become heavily involved in dangerous conflicts with treasure hunters, when they find their own treasure in a sunken World War ll cargo ship. Among the treasure they find hidden bottles and bottles of drugs still in tacked and around every corner they are followed by hunters. I found the film to be very weird, cheesy, and interesting. The film had a budget cost of $9 million to make and earned $100 million in the box office, it seemed to be a success at its time. The film was directed by Peter Yates and had other famous stars such as Jacqueline Bisset, Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw, and Robert Lee Minor. The Deep was filmed in many places like Florida, Jamaica, Catalina, the Bahamas and at the end they went to film in Bermuda.

Unfortunately, the movie critics did not enjoy the film very well as much as they hopped for. In an article called Blu-ray review-The Deep (1977) by admin they say "Adapted from the novel by Peter Benchley, The Deep is a fairly plodding adventure that has moments of excitement – mainly the stunning underwater sequences – but never quite gets a momentum going like that other movie based on a Benchley book. Everyone gives good performances and takes the whole thing seriously – including Robert Shaw, despite his character Romer Treece going deep sea diving whilst wearing a shirt and khaki shorts and looking like your granddad dressed in his Sunday afternoon casuals – and whilst you can’t really complain about the quality of the production there is a little too much plot going on, with numerous shady characters coming in and out of the picture and various double-crosses going on, that the 124-minute running time feels a lot longer than it is. Still, it could have been the full three-hour TV cut…". (admin) They also say "The Deep was clearly a film that got made thanks to the success of Jaws and you get the feeling that, at that time, Peter Benchley could have written down what he did on his holidays, throw in a shark or two, get Robert Shaw to star in it and BOOM! – we have a hit! Get past the Jaws connections and The Deep is a good, but not great, underwater adventure with fleeting moments of excitement to keep you invested." "Nevertheless, it is solid, if unremarkable, Sunday afternoon entertainment that you could put on after the umpteenth repeat of Thunderball on ITV2 if you’re in the mood for more sharks, coral reefs and shady criminal dramas (and it has a better theme tune)." After watching the film myself I would have to agree with them on it being an ok film to watch, it was beautiful but definitely to many things going on at once and many people popping in and out.

A historical event I found that happened in the same year as the film came out (1977) was a plane crash that happened in the Canary Islands. "On the 27th of March of this year one of the World’s Worst Air Disasters in history occurred. Two jumbo jets collided on the airport runway killing 583 people." (Guy Facts) Another historical event I found from 1977 was Elvis Presley performed his last concert before he died just at the age of 42.

The film to me felt very cheesy, to long, and funny. There was a lot of silly mistake you could see in the background or it would be in your face noticeable. It had some funny dialogue shared along with the characters and was very strange too. A scenes that really stood out to me was when David and Romer when back to the cargo ship to find more drugs, David leaves to another room, where he is greeted by a Eel. The crew did a wonderful job with the under water scenes and taking full control what what to capture.

Its not the best quality video but if you do watch the film it beautiful.

I believe the movie was felt unconventional and conventional because of the small budget they had, I had a hard time understanding the plot and the characters and it went on for to long running at 2 hours and 4 minutes. They had a lot going on from weird fight scenes to rituals? They did have popular actors, and they had Peter Benchley screenplay and write the story. I think this film is a hit or miss for most people.

One textual evidence I wanted to share was the opening to the film and how beautiful it was.

The other textual evidence I wanted to share was a long fighting scene and them blowing up the shipwreck.

Dear God,

Thankful and blessed today. I woke up late because its my day off. I ate my brunch which is 3 cooked corn, ice cream from baskin robbins which I consumed. I scrolled my social media accounts, chatted my family and friends. I called Mama and Papa via my international call and I changed it to google meet. We talked a lot. I also ate maggi kari and I ate it using my chopsticks. It was very difficult but in time I will get use to it. I just watched random videos on youtube and tiktok. I also received my boxes from Pinas cargo which is jumbo box with free bulilit box. I also talked with my roommate Gemaima. I drank my medicines and I read few pages of the Bible. I ordered food at Jollibee via talabat and I ate it as my dinner. I was full after. I did my self and skin care routine. Right now, I am about to sleep. Have mercy on us Oh God. Guide us always to the right path. Remove sickness, danger and negative things in our life. Answer our prayers in your perfect time. Thank you and I love you God.

Such a frequently-asked question. Joven finds himself answering it with a variety of responses—no!, not really, eh, maybe?—yet with all of them, he doesn’t understand why he’s asked it in the first place.

It’s not like he and Wes could live together forever, with their lives and careers blossoming before them. Their needs have changed. They’ve got their feet on steady ground. Living together has always existed as a single, small chapter in their life stories, and it’s only time to turn the page.

And it doesn’t feel like a big deal for Joven, up until the moment he’s standing in the middle of an empty apartment that they can no longer call their own.

He hears Wes pat his pockets from a room over (damn those cargo pants), then Wes himself, his voice distant before breaching the open living room. “You got everything?” he asks.

Joven takes a breath. “Uh, I sure hope I do. I mean, if I don’t already at this point, then it was probably never meant to come with me in the first place.”

Wes grins. “Not even me? I wasn’t meant to come along with you?”

“Oh, whatever. You know what I mean,” Joven gruffs, ignoring the pang in his chest as he waves his arms in pretend-exasperation.

“I don’t know, Joven,” Wes giggles. “It looks like you’re forgetting something that you don’t want to leave behind.”

Joven looks around the vacant room, then raises an eyebrow at Wes’ cheeky, smiling face. The air between them practically tastes like mischief, and Joven can only open his mouth and try to contest whatever Wes has in store before he’s pulled along by the arm.

They find themselves in their tiny laundry room, now empty and cleaner than it’s been in months, yet still lingering in the scent of cheap dryer sheets. Wes leans over the bulky machines to reach for a box on the top shelf. “This is yours,” Wes says, presenting it to the man across him.

“That’s not fair, you know I’m not tall enough to reach that,” Joven snorts.

“That’s the point. It’s a gift and I wanted to surprise you.” Wes pushes the box into Joven’s hands. “Here, open it.”

“Now?” Joven asks, earning an eager nod from Wes. He chuckles and pulls back the cardboard flaps. Despite its unpredictably, it’s somehow the most “Wes” gift Joven has ever received.

Serving as padding for the package are jumbo packets of sweets, from sour gummy candy to fun size candy bars to tooth-numbing cookie packs. There’s the obligatory nerdy stuff as well, with a Funko Pop sitting on each side of the box. Not yet a part of the collection, Joven thinks, thrilled to imagine them on his shelves at the new place.

Joven already finds the gift sweet in all senses of the word. He sees one more item, though, hiding behind a tray of Oreos at the bottom of the box. He knows it’s a picture frame before he has it fully out the box, but the shot within the frame is what really surprises him; it’s a selfie of the two of them, taken the day they moved in. Cardboard boxes surrounding their feet, they had yet to organize the place when Wes pulled out his phone. And the longer Joven looks, the younger they appear to him, the more he realizes just how much they’ve both lived since then.

Joven’s mouth twists into a touched smile as he looks up from the box. “Wesley!” he coos. “This is actually really nice. Thank you.” To Wes’ surprise, Joven steps forward and slings an arm around him. “I wish I knew you were doing this, I would’ve gotten you a gift, too,” Joven says.

“No worries,” Wes sighs, squeezing Joven back. For a short second, he cranes his head to peer at Joven. “Though I will take some of that candy if you don’t want it.”

Joven steps away and holds the box up between them. “Hey, go for it. My heart might give out if I attempt to consume all that sugar.”

“Yeah. Your heart, or your toilet,” Wes jokes, making them both laugh. Joven thinks he could live in this forever, the feeling of the two of them chortling together. Then everything goes silent and the room turns small, with Joven setting aside the box and looking up at the man before him.

“You know what, Wes?”

“What?”

“I think I’m gonna miss us being roommates.”

Joven knows any other person would be shocked to hear such a heartwarming admission. He almost expects a shift in Wes’ features—a raise of brows, maybe even a flinch… but it’s Wes. Wes knows him. And Wes knows just how much Joven loves him.

A warm smile spreads across Joven’s face and Wes smiles back, eyes soft and cheeks pink. “I’m gonna miss being roommates, too,” Wes says. He leans away from the washing machine into Joven’s space, then leads Joven through the door with a guiding hand. “Alright, let’s get out of here before we get too emotional.”

“Too late,” Joven snickers, with more truth behind his words than he’d like to admit.

And with the laundry room behind them and a single box in Joven’s hands, they move forward.
