The Scottish actor and director Kenny Ireland passed away ten years ago, on July 31st 2014.
Born as George Ian Kenneth Ireland in Paisley, Renfrewshire, the son of Ian, an RAF bomber pilot who was killed on a secret mission when Ireland was five months old, and Elizabeth (nee Cowie). On leaving Paisley grammar school, he worked as an apprentice at the town’s thread manufacturer, J&P Coats. However, his ambition was to act and he eventually left to train at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Then, as an actor and assistant director, he helped to establish the Lyceum Youth theatre in Edinburgh.
He made his West End acting debut in Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy (Mayfair theatre, 1976) after the Traverse theatre Company’s Edinburgh production transferred to London. He was then a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, before work at the National Theatre, where he was Apollo in Peter Hall’s production of The Oresteia, and the Old Major and Pilkington in Animal Farm. By then, he was himself directing at the Traverse theatre.Ireland first appeared on television as an Edinburgh bank manager in an episode of the police drama Strangers. In between many other one-off roles, he played Sammy, alongside Simon Cadell and Carol Royle, in the first series of the sitcom Life Without George and the thuggish American media tycoon Ben Landless in the political drama House of Cards. He was also one of the regular group of actors in Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV, best remembered in blue dungarees and cap as the handyman Derek in the much-loved Acorn Antiques sketches, which lampooned the soap opera Crossroads. “
In the cinema, Ireland was in the Scottish film comedy Local Hero, directed by last week’s birthday boy, Bill Forsyth, other films included The Big Man, but it was TV that we mainly say Kenny in appearances in Dr. Finlay’s Casebook, Enemy at the Door, Taggart, Dempsey and Makepeace, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, Rab C Nesbit, Hamish Macbeth and many more saw that he was kept busy and the bills were paid between many theatre appearances as well as at stint as artistic director of the Royal Lyceum theatre, Edinburgh from 1993 to 2003.
Of course Kenny is best remembered for is role in Derren Litten’s Benidorm, which became an instant hit. Alongside actress Janine Duvitski, the pair played a sex-mad couple who frequent the Solana hotel in the Spanish resort every year.
It wasn’t an easy role for the mild mannered Ireland, he recalled “Half the things I don’t understand, There was one episode where I had to say, ‘Jacqueline prefers the sausage in cider.’ I said, ‘What’s funny about that?’ and had to have it explained to me. I’ve always taken the line that they’re complete innocents.
Ireland’s first marriage, to the writer, producer and director Marilyn Imrie, ended in divorce. In 1980, he married the theatrical agent Meg Poole
Kenny Ireland passed away on this day 2014 a month after it was announced he had brain cancer.

Finlay Friday
12x21: "Dune and Gloom", script extracts. Meta under the cut.
Thoughts here instead of the tags because I ran on even by my own standards.
There isn't a lot of Finn in this episode, but the changes between the script and aired version are interesting to me!!
The first two gifs are cut dialogue over the scene as-aired, which is all science. The brother reference threw me because I’m sure the only time he's mentioned on-air is in "The Last Ride", right at the end of the run. But 16yo Finn somehow both trying to impress and briefly unaware she's being hit on by her older brother's friends is v cute???
The dialogue with Moreno only changes slightly, from “My place sounds good to me. […] You make the breakfast this time”, to “Okay, so we'll do it at your place tonight, and um, I'll call you if I'm going to be late”. It’s only a subtle shift, and the tone is still outrageously flirtatious, but it’s a degree less personal/more transactional, and I feel like it helps in establishing the nature of the relationship. We know from “Homecoming” that Finn is in a ‘sneaking-out-in-the-middle-of-the-night’, “it’s so much hotter when you don’t talk” place when it comes to relationships, and I just don't see her—at this point, anyway—as willingly inviting someone into her space and making them breakfast in the morning.
AND THEN THE HENRY SCENE. The difference here is:
Aired:
Finn: "Athrok the Conqueror". That dragon movie. You know it's not in theatres anymore, and I'm pretty sure it didn't come out on DVD because I wanted to see that. Henry: Wait, you-you like fantasy movies? Finn: Yeah! I saw Lord of the Rings like forty times. Henry: That's awesome.
Script:
Finn: "Athrok the Conqueror"? Cheesy fantasy movie, right? Not in theaters anymore. Not on DVD yet. (OFF Henry, admits) Guy I'm seeing digs dragons. And I dig him.
The whole tone is different, shifting from a reluctant admission that she's researched lame movies for a guy she's into, to genuine enthusiasm for something she's passionate and unashamed about. Love that for her!!
Finn being a fantasy nerd has been part of my understanding of who she is for so long, that to see that was originally written as 'liking Moreno so much she'll research dragon movies for him' FELT WRONG. It's only a few lines but it's such a cute scene and I'm very glad they changed it, for two reasons really. One being that Finn and Henry are adorable in s12??? This woman only moves to Vegas after 12x14, and by 12x20, she's spent every night for two weeks at the batting cages with Henry, helping him practice his swing. I ADORE HER. There's also a very sweet cut scripted scene in 12x15 that goes:
Henry: So you go by "Finn"? Finn: Yup. You go by "Hank"? Henry: No. But… (thinks about this). "Hank Andrews, DNA". I like that. […] Finn: Find me when you have a profile, Hank.
THEY'RE JUST CUTE OKAY. So yeah. In the aired version she's seen Lord of the Rings like 40 times, and Henry thinks that's awesome, AND SO DO I.
(Also, I think it just feeds in so much to Finn being a people-pleaser. She gives people these little parts of herself that appeal most to them, so with Henry she loves fantasy movies, with Super Dave it's like START THE ELITE CHEF GROUP CHAT RN, and with Sara she loves crossword puzzles!! And those are all true things, they're not invented for her audience, but they're also not all of her. Because it takes time and/or being Russell to get the Full Julie Finlay Experience.)
Anyway I've spent longer thinking about THREE MINOR SCRIPT CHANGES than Lisa spent filming her scenes for this episode, so that's super chill.

I feel like I say this with every thing, maybe because I'm desperate for connections, but The Tortured Poets Department is Julie Finlay coded. And no matter what I've done it wouldn't matter anyway Ain't no way I'm gonna screw up now that I know what's at stake "Well you took me to hell too, and all at once, the ink bleeds" "But I've seen this episode, and still loved the show, who else decodes you?" "So I did my best, to lay to rest all of the bodies that have ever been on mine" "You sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days and I'm just getting color back inro my face" "You swore that you loved me but where were the clues? I died on the altar waiting for the proof" "How can I be guilty as sin?" "I might just die, it would make no difference, Down bad, wakin' up in blood"

- The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour opening aired set to "Black Swan Lake" by Janko Nilovic.
Tumblr media
Kylie Paige vs. Azusa Inaba - Azusa Inaba charged off the ropes at a seated Kylie Paige and went for the PK, but Kylie dodged by laying flat on the mat and rolled Inaba up with a school boy and grabbed a handful of tights. Kylie Paige defeated Azusa Inaba with the school boy roll up. (4:17)
SEGMENT TWO (SEVEN MINUTES):
Tumblr media
The New Brain Busters (Brock Anderson and Tessa Blanchard) vs. GPA and Laynie Luck The New Brain Busters defeated GPA and Laynie Luck with the gourdbuster from Anderson on GPA. (4:41)
Tumblr media
- After the match a video aired featuring Matt Cardona and Steph De Lander. Cardona told the viewers not to touch their dials of destiny; it truly is Steph De Lander and the “Indy God” on their televisions. Over the groans of the audience, Cardona could be heard challenging The New Brain Busters to a match tomorrow night in Wilkes-Barre.
SEGMENT THREE (EIGHT MINUTES):
Tumblr media
folkstyle (Shaw Mason, Tim Bosby, and Hunter Holdcraft) vs. Diego Hill, Tenshi X, and Azrael Kyyam folkstyle defeated Diego Hill, Tenshi X, and Azrael Kyyam with a top rope gutwrench suplex from Hunter Holdcraft on Tenshi. (3:35)
Tumblr media

- A music video aired set to “Tightrope” by Electric Light Orchestra recapping all of the events that led us to the matches taking place tomorrow night at The Long Mirror Of Time.
SEGMENT FIVE (NINE MINUTES):
Tumblr media
- Footage recorded prior to today’s taping aired showing Starboy Charlie, Marcus Mathers, Brogan Finlay, and Ricky Morton in the ring in an otherwise empty Good Time Theatre. Ricky Morton told them how grateful he was that his son Kerry agreed to give him another chance, and Ricky started about how he’s been studying folkstyle’s matches and has some tips before Charlie interrupted him. Starboy told Ricky it’s great that he’s been breaking down tape, but they asked him here today because they wanted to conduct an experiment. Kenzie Paige had sent over her NWA World Women’s Television championship and her New South Pro Wrestling championship, and Kerry Morton let them borrow the NWA Junior Heavyweight Championship. They wanted to take turns hitting Ricky in the head with them to see which belt hurts the most so they know which one to use if it comes to that. Ricky agreed and was told to take position applying the ankle lock, a favorite hold of Shaw Mason, to Starboy. Ricky put the hold on and was hit in the back of the head by Finlay with the New South championship. Ricky crumbled to the mat as the three shouted for him to get up. A dazed Morton reached his feet and with some help put the ankle lock back on Starboy. Mathers waffled Morton in the back of the head with the NWA Women’s TV belt. The trio called for Morton to get back up, but when he couldn’t Starboy had Mathers and Brogan hold Ricky up by his armpits before Charlie cracked Ricky in the skull with the NWA Jr. Heavyweight strap. The three looked down on the unconscious Ricky Morton and decided to ask him which hurt the most when he wakes up.
Tumblr media
The Production (Derek Dillinger and Ziggy Haim) vs. TrustBusters Reserve (Invictus Khash and Hyan)
*Match Continued During The Commerical Break*
SEGMENT SIX (FIVE MINUTES):
- With two minutes remaining in the broadcast the bell was rung as the TV time limit had expired so the program could fulfill advertising commitments. The TV time limit has expired and this match has been ruled a DRAW. (8:20 aired)
Tumblr media
- As Sudu Upadhyay tried to thank this week’s advertisers, the fight between The Production and the TrustBusters Reserve continued. Dom Kubrick and Al Deniro of The Production and Joshua Bishop and Big Dan Champion of the TrustBusters Reserve made their way to the ring and joined the melee. As the two factions battled around ringside, Sudu thanked our sponsors, Cousin Willie’s Microwave Popcorn, Kid Cuisine, and Sound Of Freedom in theaters now starring Jim Caviezel. We closed the show with Sudu informing fans he has just been told that The Production and the TrustBusters Reserve will settle this tomorrow night in Wilkes-Barre!

David Finlay Jr. will not be competing in the New Japan Cup. Apparently he dislocated his left shoulder during the Honor Rising Night 2 ROH World Tag Team title match v. the Briscoe Brothers last Saturday. I accounted for this yesterday when I posted the Upcoming NJPW Events. His replacement still hasn’t been announced as yet.
Tumblr media
A lot of news has come out about the G1 Climax 29 opener on 7/6/2019 in Dallas. First off, NJPW has posted a statement assuring that everyone now has entry visas into the USA. Which I am sure will be no small relief for a great many people, with the upcoming Madison Square Garden event.
Second, the on-sale date for the tickets to the G1 29 opener has been set for Wednesday 3/13/2019 at 12:00pm CST. These will be through Ticketmaster, so fees ahoy. Also, at the link, you can see that the cheapest retail price for a ticket is $50, with $300 being the highest retail price. We all know those can go up. The direct Ticketmaster link is right here.
Lastly, it was announced today that AXS TV will be showing the event live on their channel. This will be the 4th time AXS has shown an NJPW event live, as well as the first time ever a G1 Climax show will be live on American TV. The press release below:
THE BIGGEST PRO WRESTLING TOURNAMENT IN THE WORLD, THE G1 CLIMAX, COMES TO AMERICA FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 29 YEARS AND WILL AIR LIVE FROM DALLAS ON AXS TV SATURDAY, JULY 6
Los Angeles (March 1, 2019) – A pro wrestling spectacle unlike any other, NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING (NJPW) will hold the opening night of the 29th annual G1 CLIMAX tournament for the first time ever in the United States live on AXS TV on Saturday, July 6. NJPW takes over the American Airlines Center with the sport’s best athletes competing for glory as the top heavyweight wrestler of the summer.
The G1 CLIMAX is the most prestigious tournament in pro wrestling, beginning with night one in Dallas, Texas and continuing across Japan until the Aug. 12 finale in Tokyo. The best of NJPW’s roster will be represented in the tournament with around 20 wrestlers participating every year. Acclaimed NJPW commentator Kevin Kelly will call the action on AXS TV.
“The G1 CLIMAX tournament is the greatest tournament in pro wrestling and differentiates NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING from the competition,” said AXS TV FIGHTS CEO Andrew Simon. “Having night one take place in the United States shows that NJPW is now a global company with worldwide interest. We are excited to broadcast this historic night live to AXS TV fans.”
The event will be the fourth NJPW U.S. event to be broadcast live on AXS TV.
AXS TV premieres new episodes of NJPW every Friday night at 8pE/5pP as part of the weekly “Friday Night Fights” block leading into the new hit series WOW - WOMEN OF WRESTLING at 9pE and LEGACY FIGHTING ALLIANCE live at 10pE.
