russian fashion week: julia dalakian

we actually haven't discussed many presentations of late (if at all), and i tend not to be in favour of those from which clunky half-images emerge, showing on one side part of a dress and another model's disconnected legs.  but designer julia dalakian (rus: Юлии Далакян) opted for something rather interesting for her s/s 2012 moscow show: a presentation that seemed to fall somewhere about somewhere between the typical incarnations of such, a runway show, and a staged play, with models entering onto a full-blown set to lounge in chairs, vamp and pout, shake their bums at the audience, and generally languish about as though they were some decadent heiresses, that we're all probably therefore supposed to wish to channel as we sport our own versions of the creations. 

anyway, the range, titled 'love is in the air,' was, as the russian site modno-nemodno tells it, staged on the banks of the yauza river, in the former home of the artist natalia goncharova, or, more precisely (trans.) "(t)he mansion, shrouded in family mystery and secular eighteenth century became a theatrical backdrop of the upcoming show."  interestingly enough, this setting and the who's who list among the moscow elite that showed up for the exhibition seemed more important to most media outlets than the clothes (though i suppose here i shouldn't be really surprised, given that any time a singer or actress with a name sweeping anywhere near the lettered lists graces a major runway show with her presence, we usually have to hear about it.  see: chanel, vuitton, jacobs, et. al.), and the site pure people went on much in this vein, if you're curious to learn what that aspect was like. 

perhaps the closest we got to an explanation of whence the inspiration came was courtesy of cosmopolitan shopping, which noted that ms. dalakian was seeking an environment of pure romance, with (trans.) "an intimate semi-darkness, with lit candles."  they went on to remark that the scenery and the setting helped to evoke a sense of (trans.) "when Natalia Goncharova went to balls or received guests at home."  thus, i suppose we're supposed to think of the late victorian or edwardian days of the artist's youth, or the wwI-era days when she designed for the ballet and was living on the exquisitely-furnished fringes or something...i'm not entirely sure.  but i do like how these fashion people at once like the mingle the heights of luxury with some sense of the avant-garde (and yes, i know they don't usually go together, but good luck trying to convince the fashion crowd otherwise.  and so it goes). 

the palette was rather soft, although occasionally accompanied by a splash of ebony, and was described rather nicely by the russian site geometria, so i'll let them take it away (trans.): "(s)hades of sand and pearl shells, orchids petals and soft - pink roses, deep dark sea and the sunlight...fill the space."  the patterns were mostly sweet little muted wallpaper-type things and florals, but the occasional rather odd motif, like an easily-overlooked (rather cleverly subtle, if you ask me) winged skull did pop up to shake things up a bit.  the site rus life described the collection's materials as lace, satin, silk, and cotton voile, with the numerous embellishments spelled out rather poetically by intermoda as (trans.) "adorned [with] pearl shells, bulky decor items, lace, ribbons and prints, reminiscent of half obliterated frescoes and tapestries." 

and i'd like to admit here that as much as i'm sometimes put off by too ostentatious a display, with so much fuss of reminding us just how important and upper-crust all the attendees are (i suppose i lean towards quieter displays that don't take themselves so seriously), i can't in any way knock the clothes.  they were superb.  the designer focused largely on dresses, which had a wealth of delicate detail, as suggested above, and were often a little quirky thanks to asymmetrical cuts and a vacillation between the delicately prim and vintaged and the edgy-strange.  there wasn't a lot here that could really function in 'everyday' life--perhaps the odd pair of trousers, but there were only a couple of those--but in terms of special event garb, it was some of the most precious and breathtaking i've seen in recent collections.  i'd like to have learned more about the actual clothes, but then, it was a pleasure just to have seen them (see additional images at modeler).
