"Can it, Jule. You know what I do for work. He's a new recruit."

"New recruit eh...?"

"Wait... He's one o' those weirdo's from the Mists?"

"He sure is. This one's got a spark though. He's already got two notches on his horns."

"He's fresh into Tyria and already attackin' everything in sight? Y'sure he's from the Mists?"

"I-I wasn't really given an option...! Do you make fun of all your customers, scrapper? I came to buy stuff, not get the piss taken' outta me!"

"Bite yer tongue cub, or I'll put rust in yer boots!"

"Haw! I like this one! A'right, lemme get good look atchyeh cub."

"Hruff... You magic types tend to like th' lighter stuff. Somethin' 'bout keepin' yer energies flowin' or somethin'. Think I've got somethin' that'll fit you..."

"Magic... Yeah but, how'd you guess?"

"I've gutted enough flame legion in my time to know. Can see it in yer eyes cub, it ain't subtle either."

Where Time's Forever Frozen Still Mika Yasuda & Jules Millin

Mika wipes the grime from her face, her fingers trembling as she rummages through the remains of what once had been a home. The walls are scorched, the windows shattered, the abandoned pieces of furniture rotting. There is nothing left but rubble and dust.

Jules stands in the doorway, her rifle slung over her shoulder, watching the street for signs of movement. The world outside is silent except for the wind rattling through the empty buildings around them. They have learned long ago that silence could mean safety... or it could mean something is waiting.

"Hurry up," she mutters, "we need to move before dark."

Mika knows. But something about this house calls to her. She crouches besides an overturned drawer, pushing aside splintered pencils and torn paper until her fingers brush against something smooth.

A polaroid photo.

She pulls it free, her breath catching as she looks at it. The edges are worn, the colors faded, but the image is clear. Two girls, somewhere in their late twenties, arms around each other, grinning as they pose in front of a rusty van. Mika's heart clenches.

It's them.

Her and Jules.

Before the world ended.

She barely remembers when it's been taken. Maybe on a road trip, maybe after one of their endless shifts at the hospital. Back when their biggest worries had been lack of sleep and impossible patients. Before the sickness, before the bombs, before everything went to hell.

Jules sighs. "Mika, we need to—" She stops when she sees the look on Mika's face.

Swallowing hard, Mika shoves the photo into her jacket before Jules can see. "Yeah," she says quickly, standing up. "I'm coming."

"What did you find?" Jules frowns.

Mika shakes her head. "Nothing. Just some old junk."

For a moment, Jules studies her, eyes narrowed in suspicion. Then she sighs again. "Fine. Let's go."

Mika follows her out, her boots crunching over broken glass and memories. The polaroid burns in her pocket, but she can't bring herself to show Jules.

Because Jules doesn't remember.

The sickness has taken away her memories. Has stolen entire pieces of her past. She woke up one day not knowing who Mika was. Not remembering the love they shared, the life they'd built before the world fell apart. For months, Mika tried to help her recollect any of it. But Jules never did.

And so, Mika is the only one left carrying their past.

She glances at Jules, at the hardened woman she has become. At the blankness in her eyes when she looks at Mika.

Maybe it's better this way. Maybe it will make things easier. Not for her, never for her. But for Jules.

When the time comes.

Unlike Mika, she doesn't know the next stage will be the last one. It's not that she wasn't there, hasn't witnessed it, when they lost their friends. It simply is another emotional experience that hasn't stuck with her.

Mika tightens her grip on the photo. She will keep it hidden, but she won't throw it away, won't ever burn it.

Soon she will be alone. Soon it will be all she's got.

Primo:

He especially loves a lazy rainy day in the greenhouse. Something about the rain tapping on the glass is very calming. 

He keeps a daybed and a bit of a room set up in one corner, tucked away behind a wall of tropical plants. On rainy days, it’s his favourite place to nap and stretch out with his SO. 

Also a good place for a slow, tender fuck between naps and cuddles. 

He’ll happily spend the afternoon combing his fingers through your hair and talking quietly about whatever you want to talk about. 

It’s really just a good excuse for a day of gentle physical affection and bonding. And one of the few days he can be convinced to simply rest without worrying about work and duties and every other little thing. 

Secondo:

The grey sweatpants come out. JUST the grey sweatpants. Without needing to ask. 

This man does not take many days off, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t take advantage of the ones he has. When he relaxes, he relaxes. 

Opens a good bottle of wine, gets out the fancy cheeses and meats he’s been saving, olives, crackers, pickles, grapes, the works. Makes up a charcuterie board that would make grown men weep. 

Spends the afternoon watching old movies, stretched out on the couch, snacking and cuddling. 

Anyone who says this man is not a cuddler is a liar or a fool. He must be touching his SO at all times. Needs all the physical affection - for your sake. Obviously.

The charcuterie board isn’t the only snack in the room and he does love to eat rare, fine things. 

Terzo:

The rain always makes him melancholy. He’s a sunshine boy. He WILL spend the day looking sad and staring out the window if you don’t drag him away. You can practically hear Gary Jules singing Mad World.

He needs ALL the cuddles. And forehead kisses. And scalp scratches. And back rubs.

Definitely not going out in the rain, it will make his paints run. Although he WILL entertain suggestions for YOU to go outside, in the rain, in a white shirt. That would be fine. 

The best course of action is running a bubble bath for you both. Warm bath for cuddles. Bubbles to make silly beards and giggling like idiots until the water is cold and your fingers are pruney. 

Usually it turns into a cuddles and self-care day. Going through his extensive collection of skin care masks, painting nails, dying grey hairs, eating junk food, and watching something mindless on tv (he has a bad habit of falling into a Real Housewives spiral if you let him)

He always wants to go for a drive.

Not to anywhere specific, just out of town to someplace quiet. He’ll find some empty side road and park, turn the radio down low, and lean his seat back. 

Just enjoys getting some quiet, private time with you. And the sound of the rain on the car roof is like magic. It’s the most relaxed and calm he gets anywhere but in bed. 

All he really wants is to hear about what’s going on with you, how you’re feeling, things you’re interested in, all of it. 

He’ll sit there with that content smile and half-lidded eyes, lacing his fingers through yours, or resting his hand on your thigh. 

Sometimes he’ll talk about new songs he’s working on or share the latest ghoul gossip. 

He always insists on cracking the window “to keep the windows from fogging up”. Really he just loves the petrichor.

He invariably falls asleep rests his eyes while snoring and definitely isn’t asleep.

Shawn The Human (Seriously Just Take His Blood)

(These are all separate universes- in each one it's just the focus character who's a vamp. Shawn only has so much blood to recklessly offer his friends, if it was all 3 at once he'd be beef jerky. Tell me Shawn's fatal flaw isn't loyalty and a willingness to do Anything for his friends even if it's questionable and weird- you can't. Also I'm severely sleep deprived so I hope this is good but IDK)

Lassiter

"Seriously, Lassie, you can't keep just draining criminals." Shawn leans against the pillar by Lassie's desk and watches him fill out another report about a perp having an 'accident' while escaping custody on the way to the prison. "If you keep hypnotizing the chief, she's going to build up an immunity, and then where will you be?"

"Spencer, I still have no idea what you're on about." He does, and Shawn knows it- he figured out Lassie was turned into a vampire less than a week after it happened.

"Lassie, what I'm trying to say-" he jogs after the detective, "-is that as long as you don't need to kill to drink, I don't see why you're risking your whole career over this."

"Since when do you care about my career?"

"Since the possibility of you leaving, Jules getting a new partner she hates, and me having to work up a whole new dynamic became real."

"What're you even offering, Spencer?"

"Dude, I have blood!"

That makes Lassiter stop in his tracks. He turns to face Shawn, slowly, with no small amount of disgust on his face. "You want me... to drink your blood? ... Is this a fetish?"

"What?! No!" Shawn tsks and looks away. "Man, don't make this weird. It's just one friend, offering his blood to another more undead-y friend. How much will you even need to take, anyway? I've got like, a gallon of it, probably."

"I wouldn't drink your blood if you were the last human in the entire state of California. It's probably half crappy energy drinks and sluggish with Cheeto dust."

"First of all, Doritos dust. Second of all, what's better for you- blood you don't have to hypnotize the entire department to get away with, or blood that's probably exactly like mine but with more crimes in it?"

"Crime isn't in blood."

"How would you know, you've only tasted criminal blood."

"Not doing it, Spencer." He walks away. Shawn chases after him.

"Lassie! I-I'm serious man, if you keep this up you're going to get caught! I want to help you keep this a secret!"

"Then stop shouting about it!"

"LASSIE!"

"Jules. Are you an undead mistress of the damned, or are you just having a great hair day?"

Jules smiles and rolls her eyes. She figured Shawn would know sooner or later- how couldn't he? He's psychic, the world of the dead who aren't dead are sort of his whole thing.

"How long have you known?"

"Four days- I was making a list of ways to break it to you."

"And you settled on that."

"Well now I feel self-conscious."

"Why're you telling me you know, Shawn?"

"Just, checking in! Seeing how you're doing. If you need blood."

"Shawn." Jules stands up, taking a folder from her desk to the filing cabinets. "I'm not killing anyone."

"I never said you were! And I know you never would. But that can't be easy, still."

"It is, actually."

"H-how?"

"I get Christmas cards from people I arrest, Shawn. It's not hard to convince a few close friends to donate a little blood to me when possible."

"It's not? ... The other day I couldn't even get Gus to give me his half-finished hours-old coke."

"Yes. But that's you, and Gus, and food. So nothing will be reasonable."

"... That's fair. ... But uh, want to add one-one more friend, to that list?"

"That's very sweet of you Shawn, really, but..."

"But?"

"But... your blood seems like it might be a little..."

"Too alluring? Irresistible? Spiced with my incredible magic genes?"

"... Junk-food-y."

"Junk food? Wh- Jules! Between Gus and I, I am not the one who eats things like stick-o-butter-in-a-bun!"

"Please tell me you just made that up."

"I wish I could."

"Shawn, look, I appreciate the thought, but the truth is I'm all set and, well, I'd just rather keep this and my work life separate, as much as possible."

"... Alright. Fine. ... But know that if we're ever out there catching bad guys and you need an emergency snack, my neck is right here."

"Thanks, Shawn. ... Can I get into the file cabinet now?"

"Oh, right."

"Dude, seriously." Shawn watches Gus pace the office. "Stop freaking out about it and just bite me. You're going to starve to... well not death, I guess. Undeath? That's already you. Maybe... a coma? But that doesn't seem right either."

"I am not drinking your blood, Shawn. What if that turns you into a vampire too?!"

"Then we'll literally be best friends forever! That's just a win-win, Gus!"

"Well- well what if I can't stop and I kill you?!"

"Then you still just turn me, still a win-win."

"Shawn, this is serious!"

"So am I! Look, we both know there's no way in hell you're going out hunting and stalking and all that stuff, and we both know you're not willing to steal from a blood bank-"

"Those bags were donated for medical purposes, Shawn! There's already a major shortage, I will not be apart of making that worse!"

"Exactly! And you've got one best friend right here, literally sticking his neck out for you."

"No. No way. It's too risky, and too weird!"

"How is this the weirdest thing we've done for each other?"

"Because it's your blood, Shawn. That's supposed to stay inside your body!"

"Well, a lot of it was outside my body after I got shot, and I was fine."

"You told me you passed out a couple times!"

"Okay, I said I fell asleep in the woods once, and got hit in the head after that. Totally different, besides, how much blood loss is actually bad for me anyway?"

"Oh... my gosh."

"Look, Gus, it's either this or something way worse. You're already so freaked out and torn up over this whole thing, I just... don't want to see you pushed to a limit you'll never come back from."

"... Well... I appreciate that, Shawn. ... And I guess I at least know what is and isn't present in your blood."

"Exactly."

"... But biting the neck still feels weird."

"Wrist?"

"Euhhhhh..."

"Well it's not like we can just buy a do-it-yourself-at-home blood drawing kits, Gus. ... Can we?"
