A/N: With our deepest gratitude to this fic’s primary author, @dkc2017 , for everything you’ve done for this fandom 💜 - @trying-to-get-somewhere-real and I loved getting to play in the sandbox you created and add a few final scenes of our own to bring this fic to the world. Happy holidays!
Just a quick heads up that the vignettes don’t proceed chronologically, so do note the dates! And do check out the tags and content warnings
Fic Preview:
June 1966
The first time Judith Jones sat alone behind the formidable desk in the wood-paneled office with the extraordinary view that once belonged to the woman who had most shaped her career, she wept. Blanche Knopf was gone.
“Oh, Blanche,” she breathed, tears welling in her eyes. “This will never feel right without you.”
It had never been part of Judith’s plan to climb the ladder in the publishing industry. It certainly had never been her plan to do so without Blanche. In fact, without Blanche she was questioning whether she wanted to be in publishing at all. Maybe it was time to move to Vermont once and for all. Yet she owed Blanche this much—to try. And, at Blanche’s insistence, if not the new vice president of Knopf, it meant stepping into shoes she was unprepared to inhabit.
The ringing phone startled her. She quickly grabbed for a tissue, dabbed at her eyes, and cleared her throat before answering, “This is Judith.” The familiar words felt new and unpracticed after days of fumbling silently and unmoored through the world.

My dearest beloved (@sparklingmonster) wrote a 11k (almost 12k) Avis/Judith one-shot slowburn which I've been receiving updates about since the beginning and one thing about it? It simply does not disappoint. If you love heavy dialogue and heart-warming character dynamics and have an abundance of love for Julia (2022) and it's beloved ensemble and principal cast, look no further. This is the fic for you.
This small yet mighty fandom has so, so many talented writers and this one has been in the works for a while, but I'm so happy it's finally here.

Judith Jones is a celebrated figure in the world of publishing, having made indelible contributions to both literature and culinary writing. Her illustrious career spanned several decades, during which she played a pivotal role in shaping modern American culinary tastes and literary standards.
Tumblr media
Upon joining Alfred A. Knopf, Jones's influence grew exponentially. She became a champion of culinary literature at a time when the genre was still finding its place in American publishing. Her editorial vision and dedication were instrumental in launching the careers of some of the most esteemed food writers. Perhaps the most notable of Jones's contributions to culinary literature was her work with Julia Child. Jones edited Child’s seminal book "Mastering the Art of French Cooking," which demystified French cuisine for the American home cook and sparked a culinary revolution in the United States. The success of this book not only cemented Julia Child's place as a household name but also elevated the status of cookbooks as serious works of literature.
One of Jones’s earliest literary credits is that she discovered the French edition of Anne Frank’s diary in a pile of rejected manuscripts when she was just 27.
As others have pointed out, the journey of the Holocaust account, originally written in Dutch, is remarkable. The story, like so many in publishing, demonstrates how easily masterpieces can be looked over, and how the fate of a manuscript can turn on a dime.
Frank’s diary, written over two years while in hiding in Amsterdam, before she was sent to a concentration camp, needed just one believer to bring it to the English-speaking world. It so happened Jones was that person. It was Frank’s now famous face that caught her eye.
A 2009 interview with the editor published in the Jewish Chronicle includes this anecdote:
“One day, my boss went off to lunch with his fellow editors, and left me with a pile of stuff,” said Jones, now senior editor and vice president at Alfred A. Knopf publishers, where she has worked since 1957. As she was going through the pile, “I came to this lovely face,” she recalled. It was the photograph of Anne Frank gracing the cover of the advance copy of the French edition of the book that caught Jones’ eye, and bid her to begin reading.
“I read it all day,” she said. “When my boss returned, I told him, ‘We have to publish this book.’ He said, ‘What? That book by that kid?’”
The book was published in English by Doubleday in 1952 as Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. It became a sensation, particularly for its passages in which Frank reaffirms her faith in humanity, despite the genocide she was witness to. The first printing was 5,000 copies, but after the book received positive reviews, another 15,000 copies, and then another 45,000, were printed.
In addition to Julia Child, Jones introduced American audiences to a host of other influential culinary figures:
James Beard: Often referred to as the dean of American cooking, Beard's works under Jones's guidance became essential references for both home cooks and professional chefs.
Marcella Hazan: Known as the doyenne of Italian cooking, Hazan's books, edited by Jones, brought authentic Italian cuisine to the forefront of American culinary culture.
Madhur Jaffrey: With Jones's editorial support, Jaffrey's books on Indian cuisine expanded Americans' palates and understanding of the rich and diverse culinary traditions of India.
Judith Jones's talents were not confined to the culinary world. She also worked with numerous distinguished literary authors, helping to shape their works and ensure their lasting impact. Her editorial prowess extended to:
John Updike: An iconic figure in American literature, known for his prolific writing and acute insights into American life.
Anne Tyler: Renowned for her deeply humanistic and emotionally resonant novels.
Langston Hughes: A central figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes's work in poetry, fiction, and drama was influential in American culture.
Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus: Giants of existentialist philosophy and literature, their works challenged and expanded the intellectual landscape of the 20th century.
In addition to her editorial work, Judith Jones was a talented author. She coauthored three books with her late husband, Evan Jones, blending their shared passions for food and literature. Her individual works also received acclaim, with her most recent book, "Love Me, Feed Me: Sharing With Your Dog the Everyday Good Food You Cook and Enjoy" (2014), reflecting her deep affection for cooking and her pets.
Sadly, Jones died of complications from Alzheimer's disease at age 93 on August 2, 2017, in Walden, Vermont.

"here’s to selfish pricks, ‘cause we move the ball forward for mankind."
she's wholly uncompromising about who she is and what shes capable of, but still takes criticism and grows as a person! her confidence and ego are 100% earned and never feel like a Strong Woman Schtick
she had to keep walkin' straight into the destroying thing, didn't she. god damn hero.
i want an entire season of molly and patty mercury 13 backstory
molly x margo would have the best gay enemy sex and i would be so amused (but not as much as molly would) by stoned!margo
honestly don't think there are enough bad ships on famk, i adore wayne
she definitely spent months actively hitting on margo when she started ascan training just to annoy her. she and patty probably placed a bet on it.
she should've been stricter with the guys, and margo was right to fire her
hypnotized by fleetwood mac (second song on my molly x margo playlist)
Tumblr media
"...you don't know where a woman gets fingered?"
i love that she's a wreck. i love that she overshares as a way to push people away because in reality she's lonely as hell and scared of true connection. i love that she uses generational stereotypes as jokes for the bit (and to rib at deb) when in reality she could really not give a damn. i love that she does drugs. i love that none of those things change the fact that she's talented and hardworking and fucking thriving. i love that she and i have the same relationship with growing up a gay loser with conservative parents in a new england suburb. i love that she's hot and spreads chocolate on her tiddies when she forgets shes wearing pants.
i hate that shes not real. jk, my least favorite thing is that she cannot for the life of her keep it in the drafts.
carl and hannah get along so well that every time ava and marcus interact i just knoooooow they want to genuinely admit to liking each other. i want more.
avadeb has in fact had my heart from day 1 and that will never change (its not gonna be canon you stupid sluts...ruby's cool too)
ava x not being woken up for breakfast
she's actually allergic to dogs and sucks it up for barry and cara only
unpopular opinion is that i am looking forward to seeing her absolutely thrive in season 3

"There are three things to remember about being a starship captain: keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the ship… and never abandon a member of your crew."
everything about janeway is my favorite thing about janeway, but especially what i said to you the other day about her being a woman and a captain but never feeling like a caricature of either or the other. her leadership feels different than the other pre-disco captains, but it's never tokenism.
she's got a questionable taste in men. also generally too nice to aliens that usually want to kill her.
if they were stuck in the delta quadrant any longer, tom paris would've named his second kid after her (maybe he already did? who knows what went on on that planet)
j7! i'm always a sucker for a former drone x person who gave the drone their name (a shortened version of their designation). also this (x)
sorry mutuals but ch*kotay takes the cake on this one by a mile
she thinks about that puppy q almost gave her pretty often on voyager, and has programmed a dog into every holodeck program she runs. when they get back to earth she adopts one of the puppies her old dog had from her ex. she names it neelix.
she made the right call with tuvix
all the things you are frances faye
Tumblr media
"i'll be your eyes." "what?" "i'll. be. your. eyes."
above anything else, she does the work and supports the people she thinks are worthy, she thinks have something important to say, regardless of prestige. she's cute as a button and loyal to a fault and is exactly the right amount of talented and full of grace and humility for what she does.
she maaaaaay need to start learning what professional boundaries are (mainly irt how much of peoples' personal issues she can carry on her lonesome)
i could watch an entire season of judith and paul attempting to bake bread using the scientific method
blanchejudith my beloved. my milfiest ship. my repression central. my women who desperately need a weekend in vermont.
if julia/judith was a thing ig i do not want to see
i have lots of headcanons ab the cabin in vermont and how she uses that space to better both her editing and her writers' work
i don't think there are enough people in this fandom for anything to be controversial? she is an absolute gem

DOA's Julia (HBO) Ficverse: Fic Masterpost
Tumblr media
For the "hardcore droughtofapathy avis ficverse fans." - @trying-to-get-somewhere-real
I Will Try to Forgive Myself For Living in the Dark (Blanche Knopf/Judith Jones | 4,832 | M) Blanche Knopf had lost count of the number of times they'd met like this in a Plaza Hotel suite. As her world slowly vanished into darkness, Blanche slowly learned how to find the pleasure in blindness.
Substitution (Avis DeVoto/Blanche Knopf | 9,635 | E) Avis isn't stupid. She knows Blanche would rather have a different, small, slender, pale-skinned woman in her bed. But instead she's stuck with Avis, and that's something they're just going to have to live with.
Learn How to Settle for What You Get (Avis DeVoto/Judith Jones, Avis DeVoto/Blanche Knopf, Blanche Knopf/Judith Jones | 39,818 | M) Judith discovers what transpired in "Substitution" and it would just be rude to leave her out of the loop entirely, wouldn't it? That Blanche happens to be dead is another matter entirely.
Buried Sweetly in Her Yellow Hair (Blanche Knopf/Judith Jones | 9,459 | T) Avis, Blanche, and Judith find themselves with no other choice but to share a single hotel room for the night. A single hotel room with a single bed.
A Kind of Happiness that No One Really Knows (Avis DeVoto/OFC, Avis DeVoto & Julia Child | 7,755 | M) A romantic Sunday morning comes to a screeching halt when Julia lets herself into Avis's house to return a teapot and instead discovers Avis in a compromising position with another woman on her kitchen countertop. She reacts as tactfully as you would expect.
Alternative Ingredients (Avis DeVoto/Judith Jones | 12,178 | E) In the wake of Stanley's betrayal, Avis embarks on a frenzied fury-induced cleaning spree but is soon interrupted by Judith Jones with two bottles of wine in hand and a sympathetic ear. And Avis DeVoto has never turned her nose up at free liquor.
Secret Recipes (Avis DeVoto/Judith Jones, Avis DeVoto/OFC | 6,855 | M) Several weeks after their one-night-stand, Avis travels down to Manhattan to experience the wonders of an underground lesbian bar with Judith as her faithful wingwoman.
Tinsel Town (Avis DeVoto/Blanche Knopf/Judith Jones, Blanche Knopf/Judith Jones | 24,681 | M | Old Hollywood AU) In which Avis is a fading actress, Judith is a renown Hollywood starlet, and Blanche is a cutthroat Broadway producer. And it's a proper threesome.
If It's Thursday, It Must Be Nora (Avis DeVoto/OFC(s), Avis DeVoto/Judith Jones, Avis DeVoto/Blanche Knopf, etc. | 35,427 | E) Avis DeVoto gets railed six ways to Sunday. That's it. That's the whole fic.

A/N: This fic deals heavily with food and eating (or not) and their relationship to pleasure, especially in chapter 1, so a content note that I'll be depicting Blanche’s canon-compliant disordered eating. The whole chapter is a tight Judith POV, though, so we won’t be in Blanche's head if that helps. And I suppose a further, less serious heads up that Evan very much exists in the world of this fic! When canon gives you husbands, make the ship dynamic even messier 🫡
Fic Preview:
Frustration is still etched in every line of Blanche’s face from the time she steps into Knopf in the morning until the moment she leaves in the evening, but she’s softened some with Judith since the start of her kindness campaign. Blanche is as acerbic and driven as ever, but she’s more often angry near Judith than she is at Judith—a far more tolerable situation.
Truth be told, it didn’t take much. A hand-delivered lunch Julia would deem little more than ingredients for a meal nowhere near completion. A last-minute invitation to a dinner Blanche wouldn’t eat. Simple kindnesses Blanche hardly allows herself. Yet somehow, they add up to a palpable shift.
It would be easy enough to leave it there. Judith no longer dreads the office the way she had for several long weeks, after all. But something inside her clenches at the idea of letting whatever warmth has sparked between them die down without tending. So the following Tuesday, Judith invites Blanche over for dinner later that week and asks her to think about it before answering. On Wednesday, Blanche looks anywhere but at Judith when she thanks her for the invitation but tells her she can’t come; Alfred is expecting her.
The following week, Blanche rounds on Judith before she’s even finished inviting Blanche to dinner again. “Why do you keep asking?” It feels like a confrontation, but there’s no anger in the words. All Judith hears in them is incredulity.
Judith gives a small shrug of her shoulders. “It’d be nice to have you. We can light the fire.” It’s only just now beginning to feel like fall in earnest, but Blanche always seems a little colder than most. “I even bought a mahjong set.”
Blanche’s head jerks upward. “For me?”
“The food wasn’t much of a lure, was it?”
Blanche’s lips twitch, and she blinks rapidly, though not so rapidly that Judith misses the glimmer of moisture that’s gathered in them. “Maybe…maybe next time.”
