YOUNG THUG YSL TRIAL GETS THIRD JUDGE
The Young Thug YSL trial has its third judge in a matter of weeks; let's break it down real quick.
Formerly presiding Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case on July 15th after it was discovered that the prosecution had secret meetings with a state witness, unbeknownst to the defense.
So, a second judge was appointed. Judge Shukura Ingram, who almost immediately recused herself from the case. Two are out.
The newest judge on the case is Judge Paige Reece Whitaker, making three judges to preside over this trial in a matter of a few weeks. Crazy.
This new judge also allegedly has strong ties to the defense attorneys in this case, which could likely cause even more issues moving forward.
This entire Young Thug case is crazy, though. In case you didn't know, the rapper faces a collective nine charges—from possession of dr*gs and we*pns and participating in criminal street g*ng activity—with the heaviest charge being conspiracy to violate the RICO Act. RICO stands for Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations; it's a federal law to extend criminal prosecution and punishment to ongoing organized crime, essentially. The RICO charge by itself carries a sentence of nine to twelve years, so it goes without saying this is a serious matter.
There's a brief breakdown of the case, charges, and updates, so let's get into my thoughts.
This trial is a disaster. The former judge was wildly unprofessional, the prosecution is shady as hell, and the atmosphere in the courtroom appears as though it couldn't be more tense, to say the least. I think the fact there's such a high turnover in judges because they don't know how to act is not a good sign when the end goal is a fair and just trial. I'd emphasize the unfair aspect more, but I'd like to assume that's obvious given the aforementioned secret meetings alone! What is it with prosecution withholding shit from the defense in these high profile trials lately? In addition to all of that, Young Thug's attorney, Brian Steel, was recently held in contempt of court for ojecting and calling out these intentionally shady activities for what they are—he did successfully fight that and avoid jail time, though. I've kept up with this trial as much as I can and will continue to do so; needless to say, it's just a really messy and almost shameful example of the judicial process in action.
What do you think of this trial? Let me know!
