realizing anew that y.t. and nell are kinda the blueprint for how i think about cool women
i read snow crash first & like. wanted to live in y.t.’s world so badly like she’s still p much one of the coolest female characters in my book
what’s funny tho thinking about it is juanita’s approach to life has had the bigger influence on me. her & nell are really more like how i am. whereas y.t. is almost more like the sorta girl i fall for. dunno what that tells you about me
#i rant#yt from snow crash & nell from diamond age#juanita also from snow crash#this is miranda erasure but she is more of a mother figure which i am not#would i react (har har) like miranda if in her shoes? yah but that’s not the point#neal stephenson continued to write compelling female characters but imo none of em were as well rounded out#i read snow crash and diamond age at maybe 13ish? like they were the novels of my youth

snow crash - neal stephenson
my playlist (because of The Way That I Am)
final thoughts:
okay, im going to be honest right out of the gate- i cant decide whether this is a book id recommend or not. it was really fun for the most part, but personally there was a lot more exposition than id like. the early portions of the novel have exposition which feels completely fair, mostly things relating to worldbuilding. stephenson creates his own vision of future america, and some places online referred to it as cyberpunk, and some as post-cyberpunk. id be more in the latter camp, mostly due to the way he plays with tropes, leaving the reader unsure of which will be subverted and which wont.
the use of language was really fun, and i enjoyed the worldbuilding a lot. his vision of a futuristic capitalistic earth feels surreal in its immediacy and recognizability. the back jacket blurb ends with "a future america so bizarre, so outrageous, you'll recognize it immediately." which, yeah. a texan info-tech magnate? two competing corporations owning the highway system? suburban city-states? this was another enjoyable thing- everything was colorfully named, and names treated totally normally, which kind of poked fun at how we have everyday things named very ludicrously and for the most part we are totally blind to it.
one aspect i really enjoyed was that the author often doesn't make certain things clear to the audience, until he does, and then it becomes necessary to reassess the entire story and setting. this goes to underscore the theme of the importance of information and the ways we take it in and perceive the world based upon it. for example, we don't learn that y.t. is fifteen until maybe 75 pages in, at which point a lot makes sense in retrospect. the same thing occurs in the worldbuilding, as suddenly a detail is given in passing and the reader must incorporate it into the setting, which by default we assume to be similar in many ways to our idea of america. it keeps the reader on their toes as well as furthering the worldbuilding. for the most part, the tech stuff didnt feel outdated to me, despite being a future projected out from '92.
however, aspects of the book are definitely very 1992. id put these into two camps: the first, being that the book does at different times use slurs. the main character is black and asian, the n word is used a few times by racist side-character/antagonist types, as are a few other racial slurs. there was also the occasional usage of the r slur, within the narrative prose itself, rather than usage as an insult within dialogue.
the protagonist, who is named, unfortunately, hiro protagonist, is a great character and felt very fleshed out to me, though at times he reminded me more of dirk strider than normally would be ideal. (its obvious that stephenson and andrew hussie are of a similar type of writer, and play with similar tropes, lmao.) hiro is a man of many worlds. he seems to shift between them easily, though never fully existing in any of them. this is reflected in his background, both in his biracial identity and in having been raised on a myriad of army bases. this is layered further in his fluidity in interacting with both reality and the metaverse, yet remaining slightly, consistently aloof. fascinatingly the first moment i sensed this drop was when we meet juanita- aka where his real and meta realities coincide. the description of them as the adam and eve of the metaverse is both insanely romantic and thematically key (good god i wish we had more than like, two conversations between them). juanita designed the facial component to metaverse avatars, doing the majority of this work when the two were together, and hiro can see echoes of both their facial tics in the face of every avatar in the metaverse. in a way, by having done this work juanita is positioned by the narrative as one of the gods of this digital realm. she is also hiro's call to action, being aware of the coming trouble and alerting him to it, as well as connecting him to the informational database he needs to prepare.
y.t., the secondary protagonist, fucking ruled. i loved that she was just a fifteen year old punkass kid whose mom doesnt know how crazy this part time job is. y.t. being worried about her mom was a great thread throughout, and a really good balance to how obviously independent y.t. is. i do wish there had been a chance to explain more about her background (she has a dad who left who is mentioned in a throwaway sentence, and a boyfriend who is mentioned near the beginning but never again.) i really enjoyed how obviously hyperaware y.t. was at all times about her own place within the insanities of the setting, while also consistently writing her as a teen maybe in way too deep who thinks about things in typically teenage ways. but like, that wasn't ever held against her? the narrative meets her where she is. it was honestly awesome. HOWEVER,
i absolutely hated the raven and y.t. scenes. how creepy!!! he basically statutory rapes her!!! we know hes at least late 20s early 30s, because hes the same age as hiro. if this sort of content is upsetting to read for you, i definitely do NOT recommend this book. (if you want to avoid reading these bits: ch 47 y.t. meets raven, ch 50 they are in a bar eating, ch 52 things happen that result in y.t.'s anti-assault device activating- she did not activate it on purpose, but forgot it was there- and raven is knocked out.)
please PLEASE dont take any of the following analysis as like, trying to be apologetic towards this scenes. because again they were awful and hard to get through and really gross. but im also cognizant that the author was obviously trying to convey something by making the choice, like the way it was written is obviously not condoning this sort of thing.
i think maybe what stephenson was trying to get at with that, was that we see hiro internally negate any potential for anything untoward with y.t. basically immediately, since he kind of senses that she might have a small crush on him (though this doesnt last more than a fleeting moment, especially from her perspective). vs raven, whose 'poor impulse control' warning tattoo eventually elicits a sarcastic remark from hiro after he finds out raven and y.t. were "a thing". i really dont think hiro knew how far it went? like it was just suuuper weird, but i figured it was meant narratively to 1. execute the chekovs gun of y.t.'s anti-assault device, 2. contrast hiro and raven (especially considering the bike-racing argument where theyre telling the story together, which is supposed to parallel them, while contrasting the differences in how they ended up?), and 3. just to get raven unconscious, i guess. but good god it was weird and i hated every second of it, why couldnt the device have like, activated way earlier?? gah. fucking upsetting. moving past that!
honestly i was really frustrated by how little screentime juanita got, because the way she was introduced was so fucking interesting and then shes mostly off doing her own thing. the bits of explanation she gives at the end about what she was up to on the raft are so sparse and im like damn, can we get a little bit of her pov in here? please? that would have ruled. additionally, shes supposed to be hiros love interest, but we see so little of them interacting outside her intro scenes. a huge portion of why hiro is getting into the sumerian mythology is literally framed as something that will help him understand juanita, but we dont get to see him talk to her about it barely at all.
the supporting characters were quite fun, i particularly liked the librarian. big surprise, i liked the overly literal ai information-dispensor, lmfao. watching him and hiro interact reminded me SO hard of geordi laforge having honest to god conversations with the computer where he tries to coax information out of it, aka one of my favorite little aspects of tng.
and lastly, the major plot themes themselves. i adore the way stephenson approached action, it was very entertaining. usually i cant really visualize action scenes written out, but his use of language was really really effective and engaging. the plot itself was absolutely fascinating, though i found the premise pretty contrived. which isnt bad in itself, i was fully suspending my disbelief until the last hundred pages or so. which for a 550+ page book, isnt too bad.
i did like the approach of linking the ancient to the modern, that is always really neat. and i think ultimately stephenson did it in an interesting way, not how i would have done it, but definitely interesting! creating these ideas about information infrastructures, and there being words that can access those and be used to control people, was wild. not sure if i agree about the equating of religion to a virus, though he did specifically establish that it was more the approach to religion, than religion itself. (maybe if juanita had been more goddamn present in the narrative that could have been elaborated on a little more. literally her perspective would have been perfect in balancing that out!!)
ultimately what did me in was the very very very long winded MONOLOGUE where hiro re-explained the whole premise, in ways that didnt really neatly organize into a cohesive argument. a lot of the scenes where hiro talks to the librarian, which are interspersed throughout the book, are really exposition heavy, because stephenson is rooting his ideas in historical concepts that need to be explained to both hiro and the audience. and i thought all that was fine, because it was a conversation where hiro was grappling with the information, and he was figuring it out along with the reader, and most importantly it was a conversation between him and the librarian computer program.
howeverrr later on we get a full rehash of all that, where hiro makes clear some stuff that was just implied for the reader, and hes literally just telling these important men whats up in this big long monologue. utterly worthless. i kept reading it and going YEAH, we KNOW, we know this we know this. and the important men barely interjected. it added basically nothing to our understanding of the situation, other than reframing it. but everything added was already an implicit thing, and didnt really need to be said again.
the resolution to the book was stellar, the last 30-40 pages, once hiro is onto the raft, were great. ultimately after reading and giving some time to digest it, i think it was a solidly great book with a few big drawbacks near the end, but which dont carry through and sully the ending.

Asian, Books, and Club: e novel SNOU CRASH NEAL STEPHENSON Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson a review. Cyberpunk Dystopian Futures are a genre of books I’ve been trying to get into for a while, but unfortunately this was not the book to read for that. A lot of this can be chalked up to decade (90s) it was written in. The backstory is that the American Government collapsed an unspecified amount of time ago and now there’s several hundred governments that rule various sections of California where the book largely takes place. Also there is the Metaverse, a virtual reality people access through the internet. Our two protagonists are Hiro Protagonist (geddit?), a half black half Asian army brat who’s dad fought in World War Two, and he worked for the company that created the metaverse and personally designed the sword fighting system. Our other protagonist is YT, a 15 year old Kourier (a courier who delivers packages, spelt that way because 90s) and her mother is a programmer for the government (which collapsed). Hiro is delivering pizzas for the mafia (for the rush of what would happen to him if he failed to deliver in under 30 minutes) when a Kourier harpoons his car (perhaps using magnets, it’s not really explained) and in attempting to loose the Kourier he crashes the car. As the 30 minute deadline is approaching the Kourier offers to deliver it for him, and she gets it in the nick of time. A couple of weeks later Hiro goes to a club in the metaverse owned by his friend and former boss Da5id, and he runs into his exgirlfriend Juanita. Juanita exposits on the nature of religion before leaving, and then Hiro talks to Da5id who tries to help him find some new work as a programmer before mentioning a new drug called snow crash that he was given a sample of that can somehow be used in the metaverse. Da5id uses his sample and says it didn’t do anything and just made everything look fuzzy before his avatar disappears. A few days later Hiro hears from Juanita that Da5id is in a coma, and they conclude that snow crash is involved. Hiro begins investigating and Juanita tells him to use a metaverse library with information from all over the internet. The library was made by a programmer named Lagos who was investigating the Sumerian deities. Meanwhile YT is continuing to do her Kourier job and is doing a delivery to the head of the Mafia/pizzeria Uncle Enzo. Enzo feels indebted to her for saving them a bit of embarrassment with the pizza delivery, and he likes her style, thinks she’s got spunk, moxie. He gives her his dog togs from Vietnam to help her get out of trouble. YT is then hired to run errands for the mob. Hiro goes to a concert with his roommate and meets the same Lagos who designed the library. Hiro finds him to be a real weirdo (coming from a guy who carries a katana around in real life this says a lot) and walks away from him. A short time later Lagos is found dead, murdered by a man named Raven who uses glass spears that can pierce bulletproof vests. As Hiro continues investigating he learns all sorts of stuff about the Sumerian gods, and that most Sumerian artifacts are in the possession of L. Bob Rife, who has a monopoly on the fiber optic industry and owns the largest chain of churches. Hiro determines that once in the before time humans all spoke the same language and didn’t have disease or individuality until a meta-virus created by the lead Sumerian god (how this was done is not explained, why this was done is not explained). Hiro concludes that someone is trying to reverse this and make himself ruler of the world, probably Rife himself. YT continues running errands for the mob and other places until she makes a delivery to the government (that doesn’t exist anymore) and she is kidnapped because she is helping Hiro collect information. She is taken to a fleet of boats full of people affected by Rife’s reprogramming of the brain. She’s put to work in the kitchens until Raven comes in, and Raven takes her out of there to try and seduce her. Hiro figures out where Rife is and thinks he can reverse everything done by using a Sumerian tablet that a Rife has in his possession. Hiro travels to the fleet with some Mafia people who are trying to rescue YT. The mafia guys are all killed so Hiro sneaks aboard the main ship, an aircraft carrier, and goes to get the tablet. Meanwhile Raven (an adult man born in 1974) successfully seduces YT, (a 15 year old girl). This is the grossest part of the book and very uncomfortable given the assumed age difference. But I kept trucking on with this mess of a book. YT slips away after the sex, and is then captured again almost immediately, this time by Rife. Rife wants to take hep prisoner as she’s important to the mob. Rife takes YT and a handful of others, including the President of the United States (which doesn’t exist) in a Helicopter that also has the tablet Hiro needs. Hiro approaches the helicopter as it takes off, and YT throws him the tablet. Juanita then reappears, and helps Hiro use the tablet to heal everyone. YT escapes from the helicopter as it sets down to refuel, only to be immediately recaptured, but not before she gets the word out to the other Kouriers. Meanwhile Raven is attempting to unleash a virus onto the metaverse to infect everyone currently online, and Hiro is also online and duels with him to try and prevent it being deployed, and during a lull in the battle Hiro reveals that their father’s escaped from the same POW camp during World War 2, and nothing happens and it kind of goes nowhere. Raven successfully deploys the virus but Hiro is able to neutralize it before it infects everyone. Then YT escapes the helicopter when several other Kouriers attack the helicopter and pull it down, and she is able to jump out safely. The mob then blows up the helicopter and the book ends. This book is not good. The world building is contradictory, none of the characters are likeable, that sex scene is really uncomfortable, and this whole thing is just a slog to get through. Verdict: Not Recomended ~TA Paul Atreides

Snow Crash Summary
Snow Crash is a 1992 science fiction novel by Neal Stephenson. Dystopic in nature, the novel features many areas of study including language, history, religion, computer science, and mythology. The novel takes place in a future that seems foreign and familiar all at the same time. Distribution of wealth is a problem within the novel, and only a very thin veil stands between the wealthy controlling the rest of the population. That veil is language and the novel focuses on how important language can be.
Hiro Protagonist is a pizza delivery driver in Los Angeles in the 21st century. Los Angeles is no longer a part of the United States. Everything is mostly controlled by singular wealthy individuals. Hiro delivers pizza for the American Mafia, which has been corporatized. He is also a hacker and good with a sword. Although he is arguably a genius, he has difficulties with the social aspect of life, therefore he must work as a pizza delivery driver to get by.
One day, one of Hiro’s deliveries goes awry, where he meets Y.T., which is short for Yours Truly, who is a skateboarding courier. Together they escape into Mr. Lee’s Greater Hong Kong and encounter a Rat Thing. Rat Things are cybernetic security devices engineered from pit bulls. Y.T. helps Hiro complete his delivery and they decide to partner up. The two decide to work together to gather intel for profit for the CIC (the merger of the CIA and Library of Congress) in reality and the Metaverse. The Metaverse is what the internet ultimately evolved into. It is a virtual reality-based internet that resembles a multiple player online game.
There is a new drug available on the Metaverse and in real life known as Snow Crash. Hiro is offered the drug. His friend Da5id looks at the file, which involved naked avatars unrolling scrolls that had binary code on them. It causes his system to crash, and he develops brain damage in real life. Hiro meets with his ex-girlfriend Juanita who rambles almost incoherently about Sumerian culture. She hands him her database of research and disappears.
Y.T. becomes a personal pet project for the head Mafia boss named Uncle Enzo. From the information Y.T. gathers through her new relationship, and Juanita’s research that Hiro possesses, a dangerous truth is discovered. The ancient Sumerian language allowed the human brain to be programmed. Priests used to gather the masses and turn them mindless and compliant.
Ultimately, a god called Enki created a counter-virus against the controlling words. The counter-virus included stopping Sumerian being processed by the brain and the development of new languages. This is where the Biblical story of the Tower of Babel originated. The myth dictated that humans used to all speak one language, until the tower was built too close to heaven, so God had to make different languages and spread the world apart.
A rich media magnate named L. Bob Rife begun collecting Sumerian artifacts and created the drug. He wants to the be the one in control of the populace. He began spreading the drug on the Metaverse and in real life. Snow Crash takes the form of an addictive drug and is spread through blood. The Metaverse version is especially harmful to hackers, who have programmed their brains to respond to code.
Hiro decides to head north up the West Coast, as he wants to head for the Raft, where Juanita might be. Due to the mega inflation that has taken place, many Asian countries have become bankrupt. Many refugees try to get to the United States via Raft and there is a large collection of them approaching the West Coast. Rife has been using the Raft to indoctrinate the refugees with Snow Crash before they make it to the United States. Y.T. has been kidnapped and taken to the Raft due to her connection to Uncle Enzo.
Hiro makes a deal with the Mafia and they gain him access to the Raft so he can rescue Y.T. But the Raft is not too terrible for Y.T., as she is being romanced by an assassin for Rife, named Raven. Hiro’s attempt to get on the Raft is a violent one. He discovers that Juanita has infiltrated the Raft. Y.T. has discovered the counter-virus. She delivers the counter-virus to Hiro. By working together, Juanita and Hiro are able to read the counter virus out loud, saving the refugees from Snow Crash.
Rife escapes the Raft, taking Raven and Y.T. with him. The plan is to use the virtual Snow Crash at a large concert within the Metaverse. Hiro defuses the threat in time and Y.T. escapes. Rife then must face the Mafia, including Uncle Enzo. Rife is also confronted by a Rat Thing that used to be the dog Fido, who Y.T. had previously saved. Fido launches himself into the engine of Rife’s private jet, killing him and destroying the virus. Raven and Enzo fight, both becoming wounded. Hiro and Juanita reconcile and Y.T. can work on her relationship with her mother, which has been strained.
