Sevilla’s gruesome death was part of a wave of killings of women plaguing the sprawling State of Mexico, which is the country’s most populous with 16 million residents and surrounds the capital on three sides. According to Wikipedia, “Ibong Adarna” is a Filipino epic poem from the 16th century by José de la Cruz. It revolves around the search or the eponymous magic bird, the tale was about the life of King Ferdinand, Queen Valeriana and their three sons, Princes Pedro, Diego, and Juan. The three princes fought for the throne and kingship, and they were trained to fight with the sword and war as the bravest will inherit the throne. The longer-former title during the Spanish era was "Korido at Buhay na Pinagdaanan ng Tatlong Prinsipeng Magkapatid na anak ni Haring Fernando at Ni Reyna Valeriana sa Kahariang Berbanya" thus, the “The Quest for the Adarna” was an English adaptation musical written by Luna Griño-Inocian from the infamous poem that we were all required to study during high school since it’s pivotal piece of Philippine literature.  

In the original story wherein prince Pedro and prince Diego beat up their younger sibling prince Juan for he was the only son who successfully captured the Adarna, it was told that they left him unconscious in the middle of the road, however, in the Musical, they filled the plot-hole into making Juan fell over a cave and made him cross paths with a princess who also has a mission herself. Princess Leonora voluntarily went into a mission into saving her older sisters, princess Juana and princess Blanca from an 8-headed dragon that took them as a hostage since none of the hundreds of men their kingdom sent came back. Together with prince Juan, they succeeded in slaying the dragon as princess Leonora gave prince Juan a piece of her clothing in which was the key to avoiding getting savored by the dragon. The feminist theory into this adaptation was how princess Leonora contributed to the whole plot as the savior of the prince, not the other way around. In all plots of any type of film, women are always represented as helpless little girls who always need to be helped by a “man” or just damsel in distress. Princesses in even Disney movies are always written to be either cursed, kidnapped, or even enslaved. This exactly is how queen Valeriana acted upon. It’s duly noted that she is concerned and worried about his husband’s health, but that helplessness was only bound to be saved once again, by men. However, in “The Quest for the Adarna” princess Leonora portrayed how not all women need to be saved, but can also take turns into helping each other. It also shows how women do not have to be their stereotypes that were set by the ideologies of society. Without the princess’ help, Juan could have never been able to go back to the kingdom, get recognized by the Adarna for it to start singing and grant the wish to heal his father— none of those things would have happened if princess Leonora never rescued prince Juan in the first place, there would not be a happy ending, no lovey-dovey couple, because without the heroic act the princess did, the story would not be the story it sets it to be.  

I, therefore, conclude, that yes, it’s a win for the feminists.
