The day was way too hot for five people to be trapped in a car all day. Especially a car filled with teenagers of all fuckin’ things. But that was... well that was how this day was going to go wasn’t it?

No wonder he was on his third cigarette of the day and it was only 9 am.

One second Dojima is tipsy (not drunk, mind you) promising Nanako and Souji a day at the beach. The next second he is drunk (he had to be) promising his nephew that ‘yes, of course you can bring Hanamura and Amagi and Satonaka with you or whatever, now pass me that bag of chips...’ This should have been a mistake but well... a promise was a promise.

So here he is now, waiting for Souji and his daughter to get out of the house and pack the trunk full of watermelon and the other “necessary beach accessories” that Nanako had been talking about all week. Also waiting for the other teenagers but well, if the other two were out quick enough maybe he could speed away real fast....

It’s not that he didn’t like the kids. On the contrary, he was happy Souji had some friends. He was just still not great at this whole parental responsibility thing and now he had add too more people under 18 to his list of people he had to watch? It was just a little inconvenient for his paid day off.

He dropped his cigarette butt and ground it under his heel as he saw heads approaching. Well, shit. Leaving without ‘em was out of the window.

Chie huffed and lifted the two picnic baskets in each hand. With a big beach bag slung around her shoulder and a backpack on her back she was pretty sure she looked like a pack mule. But well her body could handle it.

Looking off to her side she smiled, catching sight of Yosuke at her side looking ready for a beach day in some magazine or something. They had met up on the road to the Dojima household and well, of course she was going to walk the rest of the way with him. Chie was surprised they hadn’t seen Yukiko either...

She groaned for a moment under the weight of the baskets and wished she could wipe a sheen of sweat from her brow. Full hands didn’t make that easy.

“Okay, now just remember alright? These baskets? That’s the lunch I made for all of us, there’s extra too so if we stay late it can be dinner too so long as we get creative. The backpack’s got car snacks just in case anyone gets hungry on the way so we don’t dip into the food.” Chie trailed off making sure he was paying attention.

 “...Got it, space cadet?”

The nice thing about Inaba was there were plenty of places she could wander away too that were quiet, secluded, and perfect for her to stay at for hours on end while she reevaluated her entire life and the choices she made. Today, her choice was the floodplain. The soft trickle of the water and the distant cicada song were a nice backdrop for her turmoil.

She was exhausted, every muscle ached from her previous excursion with Shiranui. It was getting harder and harder to keep up with him, and that in itself wasn’t a good thing. If she couldn’t keep up on her own, then Shiranui would resort to plan B...and she hated plan B. 

It was only as she was contemplating chucking herself into the river to escape her issues that she felt a presence looming over her. Oh god, she hadn’t even heard them come up, how fucking bad were her senses getting? With a start, she turned to find--

“Y-Yosuke? What are you doing here?”

Souji could only smile as the idol hugged him before tapping the other on the nose. “Hey there Hani what’s up?” Souji spoke before wrapping his arms around the idol.

Today was obviously a very special day, involving a certain brunette that assured him to remember important events..not to mention it was one he was always reminded to never forget.

How could someone as forgetful as he forget..when there was a big calendar that had a huge heart on this day? That, and if he forgot the man of the hour would hang him upside by the nearest tree and he damn well knew it. 

But now was he willing to put his work aside for once in order to venture out and find his favorite idol, which most days wasn’t as difficult as one might believe.

“ Yosuke~, I have arrived bearing a gift. “

What do you get the person who practically has everything and then some? Absolutely nothing. 

Well, not entirely, seeing as the detective now stood before the mentioned male with a small box that most likely contained Yosuke’s favorite..strawberry shortcake. Not to mention a bow now sat where his deerstalker once stood, a small box in his left while his right balanced that cake.

Chie hefted the box up higher in her arms and shuffled in place a little at his cute little spin. How... dare he? Be that cute on his birthday? It absolutely was not fair. She looked around the pretty empty shop around them and felt her shoulders curl in on themselves. She suddenly felt too big for the open doorway she stood in and the box too bulky... But he seemed happy to see her. That was enough, right? Well, she sure as shit hoped so. At his urging she took a few steps in extending the large box in hand.

“Well, since the shop is pretty dead you can have your own private gift opening ceremony. ...Happy birthday, Yosuke.” Chie scuffed her shoe against the wood floor before letting out a little cough. “D-Don’t have any high expectations for this though. I was experimenting with some new stuff and well... it came out kind of weird but I figured if anyone could appreciate the charms of stuff like that it was you...”

Chie had tried to make Yosuke a stuffed cat for his birthday made from his cute strawberry pattern she’d found at the fabric store. It just screamed Yosuke... but she got too ambitious. The she was a little too ambitious and her project a little big and now her perfect cat plush was a massive, lumpy thing sitting in a box with the cutest button eyes she’d ever seen. Oddly enough... with all it’s imperfections it felt like something he might appreciate?

She hoped so.
