That still sounded like insecurity to Vixey. Why else go out of their way to put someone down? Because Joanna threatened them by being herself. Growing up, Vixey had teetered between someone who hid who they really were and being too much of a nerd to really care what people thought.

Growing up, Vixey had always been so focused on her goals and ambitions. She hadn't had a lot of time to care about what other people thought about her.

"You do," Vixey smiled, nodding in agreement. "Just remember that and it won't matter what anyone else says. You'll find your people and their opinions will matter more than any stuck up girls. Have you joined any clubs or anything? That's always a good way to find likeminded people!"

Right, Vixey had mistepped and put the girl on the defensive. She felt herself blush. And she shouldn't beat herself up, because these kind of situations were always delicate. She knew that from her training. Still, Vixey liked to get things right.

"Alright, well--let's go get you a basket," she said, smiling and trying to push away anything else.

"You just get to Swynlake, then?"

She assumed so, because Swynlake was too small for a hungry kid to go completely unnoticed for a long period of time. And Swynlake was also too gossipy and nosy for that.

"I'm Vixey, by the way. Vixey Chakraborty." They started walking back up to the stand where they were selling the baskets. "My family owns this farm."

Vixey nodded, taking a seat on the other side of the bench as Joanna talked. She could imagine what an adjustment it might be for Joanna. It had been a hard adjustment for Vixey, leaving home and going somewhere she didn't know anyone. And even though she was a nerd, and also wasn't that competitive (it was hard to be competitive when Belle freakin' Beauton (Acheron, now) was in your year and always trying to one up everyone)--

She had still struggled.

"I think people who act like that often have their own insecurities about their successes," Vixey said, "or it has something to do with the way they're raised. It doesn't excuse their behavior, but I'm sure it has less to do with you and more to do with them. That's what my mama always tells me. Even now, I feel that way. I just started a new job and sometimes it can feel a little like high school. Everyone wants to be the best and some people are willing to be mean and screw over others to get there."

Still--she probably couldn't give the girl full rein. After all, the strawberries were how her family made money. But, she also didn't want to discourage the girl from not coming back. Or, even worse, when she didn't have anything to eat at all. (If that was the case, Vixey was very well aware that she might be getting scammed.)

"I don't think you could come back just any day but...once a week? You bring your basket and fill up on strawberries?"

Well, Vixey didn't know much about History of Magic. She'd gotten the basics in secondary, when she went to school in Swynlake. The witch trials, etc. etc. but she was no expert. And she wasn't really interested in learning more. She was pretty sure she knew all she needed as a Mundus. She definitely knew more than half the people she'd met in London.

But, well, she supposed studying for anything was more or less the same. Even if she didn't know the content, she could at least help Joanna stay organized!

"Well, I'll admit, I'm not much of a creative. I draw a little but creative writing is out of my wheelhouse," Vixey said with smile. "But I'm happy to listen to your ideas, if you'd think that help! And my Magick History is a little rusty, but I have lots of good study tips that I could pass along. Just general tips or tricks about memorizing dates and stuff like that! I did nursing so...Arts and Humanities aren't really my strongest suit but I'm happy to try if you'd think it'd be helpful."

"Mhm," Vixey said in an, almost, amused voice. It probably would've been amused if she wasn't thinking so hard.

She knew that people who were living in non-optimal conditions often didn't want to take handouts. That they would find it offensive. And Vixey didn't want to make assumptions and come off as rude anyway. She needed to handle this delicately.

"You know, if you buy a basket, you can eat as many of the strawberries you want for free while you're out here." That was true and they told it to everyone. "But--you're right. Maybe we are charging too much for buggy berries."

Vixey didn't actually think this. The berries were outside and there were going to be bugs and, again, most did not actually feed on the strawberries. But--if it let the girl feel better, than fine.

"What about two pounds? That seem more reasonable to you?"
