Fearing arrests, two Australian journalists flee China
Fearing arrests, two Australian journalists flee China
[ad_1]
Two Australian journalists fled China on Tuesday under diplomatic protection, fearing arrest as political pawns in the rapidly worsening relationship between Canberra and Beijing.
Their dramatic overnight exit came following days of secret wrangling that had seen both men holed up in Australia’s diplomatic missions to escape the clutches of China’s feared security police.

'Letter of thanks'
A day of great sadness when reality starts settling into your soul that the career path you had chosen giving into idealism and youthful exuberance has broken your belief system to such a degree in 5 years that now you feel like it is voluntary suffering.
A great person who I had the pleasure of working with for 6 months, out of which we hardly talked for 25 days (give or take) gets the marching orders for being a non-conforming man of principles and staying loyal to his employer for 8 years.
A great man, a true leader, an inspirational figure. No one had a bad thing to say about him, always helpful, always smiling, always there to share his experiences, anecdotes and advice, also gave us juniors complete freedom to express our opinions and heard them with patience, also allowed us to disagree, a tolerant and patient man, foremost of all his qualities, a kind man, a good husband, a good father, a good role model.
The media industry is on a downwards spiral, that is not hidden but the extent of the damage is only known to those that are in the industry. From the horses's mouth, it's worse than one can imagine.
Exploitation, the worst kind of Exploitation is prevalent in media channels where well educated and well versed masters of their crafts are hired on meager wages and then burdened with inhuman demands and expectations, apart from that, you are asked to revel in the opportunity because, atleast you are lucky, and lucky how? Lucky to be one of the fortunate people who are employed in such testing times.
But, the media industry is not new to these issues, I do not blame the current government, even if I want to, I would blame them for 10% of the ills, this has gone on since the advent of private media and those that remained quite then have taught the same abstinence and inculcated the same belief system of complicit glad handedness.
Their is an unspoken rule here, 'you are to highlight all the ills of this society, expose the wrong doings (according to the editorial policy) but never ever demand the same when it comes to your own industry, channel, workspace. Brown nosery and supression of due rights rule the roost.
Hundreds are being laid off each day, months upon months of salary back-logs, meager pay structures, repression of free speech and thought, entire media houses packing up and becoming defunct.
There was an incident in the not so recent past, where Counter Terrorism Department officials, broke into the historic Karachi press club and picked up a journalist to question him over some matters tying him to some proscribed/terrorist organizations, that created an uproar within the community.
'How dare these psuedo-khaki's step foot inside our sacred temple.'
'Never in the illustrious history of this establishment has a law enforcement agency entered the premises of these sacred lands.'
'This is just the beginning, we must all unite against these efforts to curb and curtail the voice of reason, the conscience of the state, the pillar responsible for informing the masses cannot be treaded upon.'
These were some of the popular sentiments amongst "journalists", so they took action, protests were arranged, rampant sloganeering, a well mechanised concerted effort was made to stop this from happening again, the protest made news, country' s hierarchy took note and negotiations started on the matter, issue was resolved, the journalist was also released after investigations.
The only reason I stated this incident was to tell you how powerful media is in the country, but they choose to remain quite, passive and afraid over this miscarriage of justice which is occurring each and every day, people are being told to pack their bags and leave at a moment's notice, being deprived of their livlihood, thousands have been unemployed but the impotent press clubs and journlaist unions don't budge.
Appalling to say the least, I blame the collective speech impediment that the media suffers from, it stems from a lack of vision and perspective, to give an example, a person who has been programmed to stay subsurvient, not realize their potential and add to the fodder for the elites will never think or look outside their box, untill and unless, life throws them a curve ball and they land flat on their face from their positions of comfort.
Those that can't fight for their own rights, how and why will they fight for yours?
There are a lot more factors that require a more detailed dissection but I will end it here, for now with a couplet from my friend's favorite poet, Jaun Eliya who he quoted today upon my insistance.
جونؔ دنیا کی چاکری کر کے
تو نے دل کی وہ نوکری کیا کی.

Do I regret ended up being Sociology Education student?
Truth is, I've been questioning the same question to myself. As 2017 is almost over and we prepare for welcoming 2018, let me see where I was capturing myself at the very beginning of 2017.
2017 was my senior year. This year had been so hectic for me personally because I needed to prepare lots of preparation for college. I knew where I wanted to be. An English Literature or Journalism student in university where is located at Jatinangor.
Long story short, destiny had taken me to another path of life. Sociology Education of Indonesia University of Education is where I'm belong now.
So, back to the main question.
Do I regret it?
It turns the opposite. I truly am grateful and thankful for where I'm at now. Even being in the study program that I had never thought before. My dream to be a writer and journlaist, my passion in English speech, have grown here. Some of the lecturer never have problem with me speaking English in discussion or presentation. And we have "extracurricular" of Sociology Journalism. They provide me a place to learn something I'm passionate with.
Plus, I know that I also concern in sociology issues like gender equality and feminism. And of course, I learn A LOT here.
Further than that, I'm surrounded by supportive friends. And the seniors never feel like a senior. They more like a friend and it makes easier for us to ask something without feeling guilty and awkward. This also the main reason why I love it to be here.
I know I'm going to spend the next couple years being student of this study program. I don't know whether I will still have the same energy as the first semester or not. One thing for sure, I don't regret being here.

12. Planning and News Research*
I’ve decided to change my idea slightly and adjust it to make it more relevant. Instead of the childrens show set, i will be going back to my original idea of a casual and comfortable retro lounge that follows the aesthetics of kitschy British households from the 70s to the 00s.
While my idea for the film to be a mashup of kids shows and political horror was fun and i was excited to do it, i found it difficult to link the two shows and ideas in a coherent and understandable way, instead i will combine political events and footage with more fitting tv shows and films, that might not be from a coherent time line, yet would match the context of the events much better than the children’s shows.
For my film, i will be researching the producer and director Adam Curtis, who has directed a politically theme documentary called “Hypernormalisation” which summarises how we got to where we are today starting at Henry Kissingers manipulation and betrayel of the east, and how that evolved into the current state of terrorism we’re at today. I plan to create a short film inspired by Adam Curtis’ style of editing and themes.
My film will also be intercut with scenes of sudden horror, for the more upsetting part of political and world events, such as terror attacks, and more horror themes will be incorporated into the actual installation itself.
Additionally, in order to make my film i will need to research important modern events through the news and media. To do this, i have been catagloging important information on recent events since 04/04/17, and have even logged events from 2016 in order to keep the timeline appropriate to my project.
There are a lot of details in this document, which i why i am putting it beneath the “keep reading” bar.
News timeline of Modern events

In a quote, Mr Verhofstadt stated "and yet what you want to do is remain a member of the EU. Well, I have in fact more respect for a democracy of eurosceptics who are at least saying "well i don't like the EU, I don't like the values and I go out."

The UK was hoping that some of it's assets it owns within the EU could be used to lower the ever growing Brexit bill. Eurocrats furiously responded that Britain owns nothing. Insisting the UK pay up on £85+ BILLION brexit bill. At the end of the day, the British tax payer paid for many EU projects and should entitle the UK to cash in these assets.
