How did it take you to find your balance in headstand? Guess how it took me, longer than you think. _ I love when I see who effortlessly float up to headstand with just a little instruction. For me the journey was filled with much struggle. After a year of toppling over, I managed to stay up for a few breaths. I still remember the day I didn’t fall. It felt like a miracle. _ Headstand is a foundational inversion. The patterns you set up here will help your alignment in forearm balance and handstand. Guess how long it too me to get this pose..... _ And the answer is.... 2 years. _ 2 years of failure, frustration and toppling over. The best part wasn’t the day I balanced. Top two questions that people ask me about travel— 1. Are you going alone? 2. Is your husband ok with it? _ What do you make of these questions? Where do they come from? _ From my perspective these aren’t things I think of. I am not a damsel-in-distress or a teenager. I am a fully functioning adult who is capable of doing things alone. If I was taking a vacation, I’d love for my hubby to be with me. But if I’m going to teach, film or work, then I might even prefer to travel solo. _ When I told Tim that people ask me if he is ok with me traveling alone, he laughed. We don’t have that kind of relationship. We both love each other and and cherish the time we spend together. But we are both independent people who enjoy our space. Now, I’m not saying anything against you if your relationship follows a logic other than ours, I’m just saying we are good with giving each other the space we need whether for work or mental health or just whatever. _ I’m sharing this bc I’m leaving for Norway today and yesterday I was so caught up with packing and taking care of last minute stuff that I forgot to post for the challenge. Everyone assumes I was naturally flexible. But that wasn’t the case. When I first tried to touch my toes, I couldn’t reach them. My back was super rounded and I felt like it would be impossible. With practice, and patience, the impossible became possible. _ Now I will say that it’s easier for me to develop flexibility than it is for me to build strength. I have to work twice as hard at strength as I do for flexibility. But neither are “easy” for me. I work at both. _ Don’t expect yoga, handstands, or anything in life for that matters to be easy. Be willing to put in the work. You can’t visualize yourself in a handstand, a forward bend or a backbend and expect it just happen. You also have to practice. And practice some more. And then practice even more. _ Practice is an expression of faith. My wish for you, for myself and for the world today is for us all to find more peace, more happiness and more love. _ There is so much suffering in the world and it’s so easy to let your actions fuel even more suffering. Kindness can be learned just like hatred can be unlearned. If we cannot make harmony within ourselves and in our own lives, what hope is there for a peaceful, harmonious world? _ Show up, do the work and find the way to let love in. _ It may feel hard to start, but once the tide turns over towards love and forgiveness, the momentum builds and the inertia grows until love rolls in like a wave. A small change in perspective can make for a miraculous shift. The subtlety of thoughts is often slippery and hard to grasp. Yoga works through the body to give you something tangible to feel. The poses are not meant to be the end of the road. The yoga asanas are tools that help you realize the path of awakening that is yoga. If you’re just standing on your hands but you’re not doing the inner work, then, as my teacher used to say, it’s just bending. I’d like to add that there is no harm done in just bending, twisting and lifting the body. Those shapes can bring health and healing to the body. But, if you’re a spiritual seeker, you won’t stop there. Change your perspective and you can change your whole world. _ In each moment you have the ability to shift your focus. Problems are easy to stay tuned in to. Solutions are harder to come by. It’s easy to get caught up in a loop of complaining. It takes much more courage to put in the labor required to build a new path. _ If you feel stuck, try this— Play the game of turning your thoughts around. When you notice yourself repeating the same old patterns of complaint, annoyance and irritation, see if you can turn the thought around and focus on a constructive action instead. This is particularly useful when you’re thinking negative thoughts about yourself. _ I’m not suggesting a spiritual bypass. That’s harmful and never addresses real issues. Instead, I’m suggesting that you shift your focus out of the old repetitive loop of complaint, shame, blame and hate. Try a different pattern that operates from a new paradigm of faith, creativity and real change. _ Maybe that’s what evolution actually is, changing your thoughts to such a degree that the world has no choice but to line up with your new vibration, your new self and becomes, in essence, a new world. _ Day 10 #journeytohandstandchallenge is #handstand tuck. Happiness is not something you wait for. Happiness is something you choose. _ You can shift your vibration right now. It doesn’t take that much. Especially if you’re caught in a sea of “me and my problems” what I’m going to suggest will be very helpful. While you might think you need to wait for things to change to feel better, you can actually feel better right now. Plank forever until the sky turns blue. If you know me, you know how much I love Plank Pose. Not only is this pose accessible and modifiable to all bodies, but Plank is also a powerhouse pose to building the strength you need for handstand. _ Tips— 1. Firm the whole body—Engage shoulder girdle and avoid sagging down, tuck the lower ribs and tailbone in, engage the quads and basically squeeze everything. _ 2. Shift your weight forward to reach at least a 90 degree angle with wrist. Modify with knees down or on forearms. _ 3. Relax the neck. Let the gaze be gently down and don’t strain to look too far forward. _ 4. Long hold—This is a pose that gets harder with a nice long hold. The first time I tried this pose my teacher had to work so hard to keep me from tumbling over. For me, it was pure magic to have the feeling of being upside down. Now, more than twenty years later, here I am, balancing on my hands upside down all on my own. _ One thing many yogis have been missing is the magic of hands-on assists. Teaching online is awesome and can help so many people practice. But, in-person, with adjustments is something else. In fact, the more work you put in online, by yourself, when no one is watching prepares you to receive that magical moment with your teacher when you meet in person again. _ Most of my yoga journey has been spent at home, alone, with yearly visits to India and sporadic visits to class. So I know what it means to get the energy and motivation to keep practicing on your own. My experience as a home practitioner is one of the founding reasons that I started @omstarsofficial And now to see so many people practicing with the help of the amazing tools that our platform provides is a dream come true.
