I have been toying with idea of Azutara enemies to lovers postcanon AU. Where two months or so after Agni Kai Azula organises breakout from Comics "mental hospital" but is caught when giving time for everyone else to escape. People don't know it is Azula so Katara hears about it and decides to save or avenge that girl. Surprise Azula.

What I'm winding up to ask is how do you manage to write conflict so well and if you would share some pointers? my own takes at enemies to lovers phase are waay too friendly even at the start and I have been struggling and I think this AU is interesting enough to warrant an ask.

Nice, we always need more Azutara enemies-to-lovers stories, & that concept is certainly interesting. I've always found it completely unbelievable that the gaang, especially Katara, would be fine with an abusive mental hospital holding anyone, Azula or not. Katara making a plan to rescue this girl & getting surprised that it's Azula could certainly be fun!

Thank you for saying that I write conflict well! It's something I'm always trying to improve at, & something I really enjoy writing.

In terms of advice, here are some things that I keep in mind when writing enemies to lovers, & interpersonal conflict:

You said that you feel like your issue is that things feel too friendly, even at the start. My guess is - & I could be wrong - this is because you want the characters to have that romantic spark, & you're writing something you ship so of course it can be hard to write them being cruel to each other. Something that helps me write characters that are ultimately going to be romantically entangled during the "we hate each other" phase is remembering that emotions aren't black & white. Hate can be mixed with attraction. Anger can be mixed with pity. If you don't want to write the characters flat-out hating each other, don't. Let there be some confused & contradictory feelings in there. In real life, people have contradictory feelings all the time, & it's okay for your characters to as well.

Also, in terms of writing disagreements & conflicts between the characters - I think keeping in mind the motivating factors of everyone involved is helpful to avoid mischaracterizations or contrived drama that feels unsatisfactory. Why is this character behaving this way? What's driving them? How would this other character react to it? It can be extremely tempting to just have your characters come to an agreement because that's what you want AND at other times it can be tempting to force the characters into situations that escalate the drama. Really think about the characters almost as if they're real people & ask how they would act in a given situation.

Anyway, hopefully, that advice, which feels kinda rambly, is at least somewhat helpful! <3

@jotender-blog personally, as a native person, the idea puts a bitter taste in my mouth. Hakoda shouldn't have to be responsible for racists born into luxury with undeveloped frontal lobes. The fact Azula would consider Hakoda to be beneath her by virtue of not being Fire Nation makes me want to slap her.

If you want to write the idea, go for it, but i'm not touching it with a ten foot pole

Thoughts on Azutara She Ra AU? Azula is Adora and Katara is Catra with Catadora as endgame obviously.

Don't hate me but I never actually finished She Ra, although I get the basic idea! I would have imagined it the other way around, initially, I think? Isn't Adora the more idealistic one who runs away from the shady government (or...cult? the evil people who raised the two of them) & Catra is the more indoctrinated who can't walk away so easily?

I like the idea for the AU & feel free to sell me on Azula as Adora & Katara as Catra ( I mean the names sound more alike lol) but based on my limited knowledge & what I've seen of the show I would have to say Katara as Adora & Azula as Catra makes sense. Catgirl Azula for the win okay :D

This AU would be fun because from what I understand Adora & Catra grew up together & were quite close. So, Katara abandoning the cause that Azula thinks they both believe in & by extension abandoning Azula? Ouch. Lots of angst potential & potential for fun battles >:) With of course eventual fighting on the same side & lots of making out in the future ;)

All I know about Catra's backstory is that she was raised by the aforementioned creepy cult government, so maybe Ozai could be in charge of that. Also, isn't Adora destined to be some sort of uber powerful princess? So what if Katara has that same destiny & Ozai & co. kidnapped her when she was a baby. But Katara's idealistic nature wins out & she abandons them just like Adora does - maybe to join some rebel fighters? I think that's what Adora does. It's me so I have to say Jet could come in here.

Anyway, this could also be where the gaang comes in. If Katara was kidnapped as a baby meeting Sokka & Hakoda could be great 'cause it's her reuniting with family & that opens its own host of water family angst possibilities. So, Katara gets close with the gaang & wants to defeat Ozai & co. Maybe Mai & Ty Lee are also still with Azula so that Azula's not alone. Maybe Zuko too? I'm not sure how he fits into this AU, 'cause I could also see him having been banished & already fighting on the side of the good guys by the start of the story.

Well, this leads to plenty of fun angsty battles between Azula & Katara. Also - eventually, Azula turns on Ozai & sides with Katara. Maybe if Katara's life is threatened & Azula decides that's too far? I don't know why Catra turned to the good side so come to think of it it'd probably be a good idea to use that as a guide post.

Anyway, I think it's a great AU idea!
