my thoughts on yaoi, or, why I ship Joshua/Neku and why I don't.

Stupid Dream Drop Distance trailer, making me think about fandoms I haven't thought about in a while.

I've written two TWEWY fics. Both of them are Josh/Neku, and the one that reflects the way I see them is the one where Neku is unconscious and Joshua is elbow-deep in his chest cavity. (The other, for the record, was a Secret Santa gift.)

I think that Joshua is genuinely attracted to Neku on some level. It just isn't anything that fits human standards of romance, and certainly not the bright and quick and fluid teenage variant. He might think that it's a physical attraction, because that's something that makes sense and explains why he can't look away - but it's nothing that innocent.

Neku is smart and sharp and able to hold his own against Joshua while not being better than Joshua, and that's something Josh hasn't had since he was alive (and probably not even then). In the UG, he's incredibly isolated; the only decent conversation he has is with Hanekoma, who is a dear friend but still and always an Angel, and Kitaniji, who is too loyal to ever speak against him. He has no peers. But for a while he has Neku.

Neku isn't his peer either, but Neku doesn't know that. He treats Joshua like an equal. He isn't afraid to make it clear that he thinks Joshua is an insufferable prick and constant thorn in his side and just basically the Worst Partner Ever. And for Joshua, that's just so incredibly awesome! He's being treated like a person again, instead of like the Composer.

And then, you know - the end of Week Two happens and he's alone again. And then Neku finds out who he really is. And that thing he had, that precious person who treated him like an equal, is gone, because Neku's view of him is irrevocably changed.

He could go to the RG and start a relationship with Neku. But it wouldn't be what he wants - not unless he took a few memories again, and he can't do that, even if he might think that of course he could, the Composer can do whatever the hell he likes. Trust and kindness are kind of shaky concepts for him, but he doesn't need Hanekoma to tell him that fucking with Neku's head to get Neku to - not like him, even, but be irritated with him, would be a bad thing.

So he just... watches, and wants Neku, more than he's ever wanted anything. The one thing he wants more than anything and it's the one thing he isn't allowed to touch, because it's fragile and living, human. He doesn't know how to interact with humans anymore. He wasn't really all that great at it when he was alive.

He's lonely. And by watching the one thing that could help he only makes himself more lonely, more miserable, more isolated, but he can't stop.

...and that is why I don't ship fluffy Josh/Neku (and secretly think that anyone who does needs to play the game a few more times). :Db
