Saturday 10 February 1838
7 10
12 ½
fine morning hard frost again F23° at 8 and sun out and .:. F32° at 9am at accounts – breakfast at 9 ¼ in 25 minutes – A- said her vocabulary – had Joshua Keighley till 10 ¼ A- not right again but I begin to take it very composedly and merely say nothing – paid him 2 bills for colliery oak timber and for sundry ironmongery for Shibden hall garden and laundry – for Little marsh and Stump X Inn new building – he has just bought Mr. John Priestley’s wood – about 3 acre + hedge rows = £300+ perhaps £350 good – K- (having on opening – I asked how the farm went on) said Mr. Stocks had 2 or 3 times asked if he would sell the little farm bought of Flatter – I said he must not let him have it for nothing – wait a little and then best put it up to auction and we would some of us take care that it fetched its value – K- paid Flatter £750 for the farm – has laid out £250 on the new house and farmstead + £50 in planting fencing etc – lets it for £36 per annum – values the coal at £2,000!!! said it would be loosed when common wood was loosed – I could loose it – no! no! said I, you must sell the coal to Mr. Stocks and farm too if you can get your price – you must ask £1500 and then you will be paid and it will be perhaps the best job you can do – I shall not want the coal – I don’t care even for that at my elbow (Dove house) and shall not buy it but at my own price – I have coal enough already – it seems however (or I shrewdly suspect it) that K- would be glad to sell – he said he hoped I should help him – just went in to A- to give her Miss Jenkinsons’ bill £20+ for post-horses when I found SW. with A- so after getting back my upper Place quarry house came away and till 10 50 wrote so far of today – from 10 50 to 1 20 at rough book and check – paid accounts – then went downstairs with A- and stood by her till she went upstairs to get ready for going and then (at 2 10) went out on the terraces – then to the meer, and sauntering and musing about there a long while – then to Listerwick and there till after 5 – George Thomas and Sam B- and Joseph Mann helping them a little to loaden, carted down all the large 36 yards stone (that was got in digging the gin-race) down into Charles Howarths’ field just above the meer – walked in the Lodge road from glen bridge to Lodge backwards and forwards about an hour – came in at 6 ½ - ¼ hour in the west tower – dressed – dinner at 7 5 and sat reading German till came upstairs about 8 ¼ and from then to 10 ½ reading German Kotzebue from p. 15 to line 3 of p. 21 plum pudding today it struck me it was the tenth fourth anniversary of my connection union? with A- she had remembered to order the pudding yet to me made no allusion to the day the thing struck me how odd said I to myself it was only as I came in from my walk that I congratulated myself on her being away ‘tis an incubus taken off me what a temper she has yet the plum pudding softened me as I came upstairs I told Oddy to let us have a plum pudding tomorrow and A- shall have a bottle of Malmsey Madeira of which she is very fond – had just written the last 5 lines at 10 40 – letter this evening from Mr. Harper (York) to say he proposes being here on Monday evening and Booth is to let all the tradespeople know and to write to Nelson to meet H- on Tuesday or Wednesday – went into the cellar and got a bottle of Malmsey Madeira for A- tomorrow then sat reading the newspaper till 11 ½ - fine day – very cold – hard frost – F22° at 10 40 pm

11th December - I Saw Three Ships
(disclaimer, I know next to nothing about boats, especially the fishing type and haven't bothered to do any research. Sorry about that. Call it poetic license)
********
Dear Diary
Today I witnessed a miracle. Just when all hopes were gone and our fishing crew had all but given up. Help came in the form of three 'ships'.
The Thunderbirds, who managed to rescue us as well as help to keep our livelihood intact.
You see, we are a family of fishermen who risk our lives to provide food for ourselves and our small town.
We know the stakes are high, but we have no choice but to go out there to earn our quota for the week.
Our crew are highly trained, heck, some of us are lifeguard volunteers. We'd been out a couple of days getting our nice haul, when a vicious storm hit. Huge waves pummeled the decks, causing The Faithful Liz to list dangerously.
We hung on for dear life, struggling to keep our lovely, sturdy girl afloat.
Then the mast split from the force of the waves. It swung from the rigging and punctured the hull, the engine flooded and we were stranded with nothing but our wits and a nasty sea.
Joshua barely got the SOS signal out, when bright lights appeared. Thunderbird One was hovering over us, its distinctive silver casing and lettering, flashing with each bolt of lightning.
"This is International Rescue, " the voice barely discernible over the roar of the sea, "looks like you guys need our help. Just hang in there, Thunderbird Two is on it's way."
Something else was said but it was lost as our boat suddenly capsized, throwing all five crew into the churning salty water.
As we tried to keep afloat, waves forced our heads underwater ... to espy lights underwater and a yellow shape coming closer.
Thunderbird Four was here.
Now what the heck could this little submersible do?
Apparently quite a lot actually.
A deeper roar overhead notified us of the arrival of the big green Thunderbird. Between them, they coordinated a rescue like no other. Not only did they manage to haul us out of the water, but they righted our boat, pumped out the water and plugged up the damage. Placed floating pontoons on either side and the little yellow sub, effortlessly towed it through the choppy waters.
It happened that we were but a couple of miles from the coast, but it felt a lot further.
Whilst sitting in the safety of the hull of Thunderbird Two, we were told the reason why they happened to be so close ... was that they'd been returning from another rescue and thanks to their 'eye in the sky', caught the SOS signal and thought they'd pop in. No biggie.
No biggie?
Heck, that was one hell of a feat they pulled out there. Saving our lives ... and our livelihood.
Have to go now and sign off this report. The prettiest nurse I've seen in a decade, has arrived with my favourite hot beverage. Sweet tea with a drop of rum in it.
Closing this report down to give her a kiss.
Signing out
Captain Fred Jenkinson fourth generation fisherman (and his grateful wife Elizabeth - aka Liz, third generation RN ... registered nurse ... the one bringing the tea btw)

who's your favourite active footballer?
Ooof, I don’t think I can answer this easily. Since I am trying hard to be a positivity blog now, I hope you won’t mind me turning this into a “who are my favourite (feel good) active footballer(s)?” And since I love lists, I will turn this into a team specific list (which is t o t a l l y not fueled by nostalgia at all):
Bayern:
Thomas Müller
Manuel Neuer
Javi Martinez
Serge Gnabry
Niklas Süle
(Honourable mentions: Joshua Kimmich, David Alaba, Leon Goretzka and by god I need to get to know more of the kiddos, Phonzie seems lovely.)
Arsenal:
Hector Bellerin
Rob Holding
Calum Chambers
Mohamed Elneny
Shkodran Mustafi
(Honourable mentions: Matt Macey, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock - basically all the kiddos Per brought up there, good job, dad.)
Bundesliga (first I wanted to do a German NT list, but... There isn’t much “feel good” with the current squad, which changes everytime anyway, so yeah. I haven’t paid much attention to the Bundesliga in a long time and have to get used to A LOT of new names, so... For everyone who knows me, the following list won’t have many surprises, its basically me mourning names that aren’t playing for the German NT anymore, so have some boys I love and adore):
Christoph Kramer
Jonas Hector
Lars Stindl
Sebastian Rudy
Ron-Robert Zieler
(Honourable mentions: Holger Badstuber yes, he counts, shut up, Bas Dost, Patrick Herrmann, Christian Gentner, Max Kruse, Sebastian Rode, Julian Brandt, Nils Petersen, Makoto Hasebe... And probably more tat I just forgot...)
World wide (again, you won’t find any surprises here, at all, I am very biased, I usually just pay attention to my faves and sometimes have general opinions on players/teams, but this is my feel good list, so it has to be there and I just miss these guys):
Lukas Podolski
Sami Khedira
Mario Götze
Aaron Ramsey
Kieran Gibbs
(Honourable mentions: Basically EVERYONE who didn’t fit in the list above who left Arsenal in recent years and made me cry, plus a few Bayern players as well, for example: Nacho Monreal, Santi Cazorla, Emiliano Martinez, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Carl Jenkinson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alex Iwobi, Danny Welbeck, Laurent Koscielny and, yes, Olivier Giroud, despite everything. Then we have players like Mario Mandzukic, Thiago Alcantara, Rafinha, Dante... And probably a few other former German players, like Lewis Holtby... Okay, I think this list is turning into a nostalgia only list, so let’s leave it for now.)
