The Stand Timeline Explained
https://ift.tt/3nvFczR
This article contains spoilers for The Stand episode 1.
Sometimes opening in media res has some real storytelling value. The goal of just about any story is to get people interested in continuing it. Given that the beginnings of stories are often expository and not particularly exciting, who could forgive a storyteller for wanting to jump right into the thick of the action and then fill in the blanks of what came before
Well, in the case of CBS All Access’s The Stand, I can blame producer/director Josh Boone and showrunner Benjamin Cavell for wanting to jump right in and I will do just that. Stephen King’s classic 1978 novel of the same name is an epic tale and presents all sorts of storytelling challenges to those who would want to adapt it. One of those challenges, however, is not how to begin it.
The Stand’s remarkable narrative begins in Arnette, Texas, with a terrifying incident of a virus unleashed. That kernel of an idea evolves into a sprawling narrative about disease, collapse, and recovery – all leading to an epic confrontation between good and evil that goes a long way in satisfying King’s goal to craft an American Lord of the Rings story. Instead of opening with that compelling scene, however,  this CBS All Access series instead picks up with Harold Lauder (Owen Teague) five months into the end of the world, where he and his Boulder, Colorado clean up crew clear dozens of decaying bodies out of a church.

The Stand 1994 Miniseries is a Forgotten Stephen King Classic
By Don Kaye
It’s a striking visual, to be sure, and it gets the proceedings off to an ominous start. The problem though is that the series doesn’t jump back all the way to the very beginning of its tale even after that opener. The Stand’s first episode, titled “The End,” hops around time and as a result the book’s many rich, distinct themes are muddled together into a confusing mush. Not only that but viewers unfamiliar with King’s original text might find it unclear as to when any of this is happening and what order certain scenes fall into.
With that in mind, we’ve set out to distill this 2020 The Stand into as clear a linear narrative as possible. This proved to be a challenging endeavor, given the series pretzeled narrative but with the book as a helper we’ve created a timeline that should clear up any confusion a viewer might have after “The End.”
The Beginning
As detailed above, the narrative of both the book and this first episode begin in the same location and timeframe: Arnette, Texas. This scene (which occurs roughly halfway through the episode) finds Stu Redman (Stu Redman) relaxing on a warm Texas night with his friends at Bill “Hap” Hapscomb’s gas station and convenience store. The gang’s hang out sesh is interrupted by a car speeding into Haps’ fuel pumps. Inside the car is Charles Campion, a guard at a base where the U.S. military was developing a superflu. Charles Campion will prove to be patient zero of the “Captain Trips” pandemic that kills 99% of the world’s population.
We know this scene occurs more than five months before the first scene because the show flashes to “Five Months Earlier” in Ogunquit, Maine where Harold is being bullied by some classic Stephen King-ian young dickheads. The moment with Stu at Haps’ gas station has to precede this as Ogunquit resident Frannie Goldsmith’s father is already displaying some symptoms of Captain Trips, as are Harold’s mother, sister, and one of the bullies tormenting him.
What Year is It?
The Stand makes no mention of what year this is all occurring in, but we do have some clues if we want to make an educated guess. King’s book takes place in 1980 (1990’s unabridged version takes place 10 years later), but the show is clearly set in the modern day due to one of Harold’s bullies using a smartphone and saying he will post a picture to Instagram. Instagram launched in 2010, and the quality of the smartphone in question suggests that this series of events is taking place sometime after 2015 at the very least. It’s a shame Hap didn’t have the price of gasoline per gallon listed at his store as that might have helped nail things down further. Giving the same-year setting as King’s unabridged version of The Stand, let’s just say this series takes place in 2020. And wouldn’t that just make a grim amount of sense?
The Fall
In any case, we know that Stu’s Charles Campion encounter makes up the very beginning of The Stand’s story. What follows that is a bit more nebulous. The two narratives making their way through “The End” are Stu’s time in two different military bunkers with Dr. Ellis (Hamish Linklater), and Harold and Frannie’s (Odessa Young) time in Ogunquit. The scenes with Stu and Dr. Ellis in the facility in Killeen, Texas likely occur first due to the fact that Ogunquit is pretty much desolate and empty only “one week later” following Harold’s introductory scene.
Eventually Stu and Dr. Ellis make the move to a more secure underground facility and it seems likely that this move would occur around the same time that Ogunquit has fallen. This means that right around the time Stu is encountering a high level military general (played by none other than J.K. Simmons), Harold is saving Frannie from her suicide attempt and gearing up to leave Maine.
What Comes Next
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
We know that there are five months of missing action between the time that Stu escapes the military bunker and Harold and Frannie leave Maine. All three characters will likely spend that time on the road making their way to their final destination. The opening scene obviously confirms this, but so too does Frannie and Stu’s enigmatic dreams. Frannie dreams of a cornfield and meets Mother Abigail Freemantle (Whoopi Goldberg) who tells Fran to find her at Hemingford Homes in Colorado. Stu dreams of pursuing the sound of a baby crying in the same cornfield only to encounter a wolf with glowing eyes instead. Though Harold intends to reach the CDC in Atlanta, all paths for now lead to Colorado.
And of course, the story does not end with Harold merely clearing out bodies in Boulder (“in media res” means “into the middle of things” after all). As his spiteful typewriter strikes and dreams of Randall Flagg reveal, there is much more to come for Harold and The Stand at large.

Penny LauRae accuses Peter Morgan of stealing her script
After years of watching Peter Morgan’s discrepancies, giving the media confusing timelines about Hereafter’s script, female screenwriter, Penny LauRae, is coming forward to speak about her ordeal.
When Peter Morgan was interviewed in October 2010 by DP30 the journalist expressed how unusual he found that Peter Morgan wrote such a sentimental script for Hereafter given his previous writing focusing on real life characters. In the same interview Peter Morgan said he was inspired by a book of a sister trying to communicate with her own departed sister and it took years to finish. In another interview for Cinemablend, Katey Rich also noted that the unusual emotional nature of the script was unlike his other works. In this interview Peter Morgan told Katey that when he started writing the script he put it away for a couple of years until the death of a friend prompted him to revisit the script and continued writing it after a long break. In the same year, Peter Morgan told Collider that it didn’t take much time at all: ‘’I wrote Hereafter quickly and without mapping it out too much or being too schematic.’’ Yet, Peter Morgan told Deadline that it took him 6 months to revisit the script, as opposed to a couple of years, as told to Katey Rich.
Hard to believe but in another interview for Vulture, Morgan said “What you see on the screen is this thing I wrote very sketchily in the mountains of Austria.” One can easily catch the discrepancies as they scrutinize all the different claims Mr. Morgan has said in interviews, which are publicly available online.
After years of watching Peter Morgan’s discrepancies, giving the media confusing timelines about Hereafter’s script, a female screenwriter, Penny LauRae, who had her script for Previous Engagement registered with the Writers Guild of America in 2006 is coming forward to say she is the writer and express her anguish: ‘’Well, it’s been burning inside me since. It angers me, it’s not right. I poured my heart and soul into that story and I’ve decided to now do something about it.’’
Penny LauRae comes from an artistic family (she is first cousin of actress Hilary Swank).
LauRae wrote the script “A Simple Girl” stories my grandmother told me. Adaptation of the book written by Josh Flagg, host of Million Dollar Listings.
She started writing Previous Engagement on the 23rd of August, 2005, a month later her sister passed away.
Caption: Penny LauRae (center) at her baby shower with her late sister, Patty Sue (standing behind Penny, Patty inspired the story for Previous Engagement), Hilary Swank (right), Judy Swank (center right), Gina Lopez (left, who passed away from cancer)
Friends and family members became witnesses of Penny’s emotional obsession with the script as she spent hours on end working on Previous Engagement as a therapeutic aid to deal with the loss of her beloved sister. She finished the script in 2007.
Kathryn Knowlton, known as associate producer for the film An Eye for an Eye, was hired by LauRae to do the script analysis in 2007 and later, Peter David Myers was hired on as her script analyst.
By the end of 2007, Penny had placed her synopsis of Previous Engagement on the “seeking director, producer section” of IMDB.

One scene in particular is so similar to Penny’s script that made her both upset and astounded, when one of the twins is hit by a car and lies on the floor dying, the brother leans over screaming ‘’Noooooo!!!’’ - ‘’This is one of the same exact scenes! It seems he forgot to edit it out a bit’’ she says as she nervously burst out in laughter.
What other pieces of evidence are out there besides similarities to Penny LauRae’s script?
Despite his own claims that it took him years to finish writing it, Morgan’s script is dated (starting date) May 1st 2008, yet it was sold on specs to Dreamworks in the very same year, 2008. Timeframe given by Mr. Morgan does not meet the average time frames for even simple screenwriting pieces.
Bellow are some of the similarities of both scripts:

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports
Good Bull Hunting joins us to educate us on the Texas A&M Basketball team!
It’s Senior Night in Auburn, Alabama. It’s truly the end of an era with 5 players playing their final game in Auburn Arena tonight. The opponent is Texas A&M who I will admit haven’t watched a whole lot of this season. So I figured it would be a good time to do a Q&A to learn more about the Aggies. My thanks to gigthem08 from our sister site from Texas A&M Good Bull Hunting for joining me to answer my questions.
1. First of all, it’s our first look at Buzz Williams as Head Coach of the Aggies. Personally, I think he has done a fantastic job considering the expectation level for Texas A&M this year. Just talk about the impact he has made in his first year at the helm?
On the court, the difference is extraordinary. Buzz is flying around on the sidelines, we’re playing really hard defensively, and you can tell there’s complete buy-in from the entire roster. That was my most important goal in year one, and we nailed it. Off the court, the difference is almost as stark. Kennedy didn’t exactly hold the most interesting press conferences, while Buzz seems truly invested in making sure the fans understand his preparation (and his thoughts on the results) at the conclusion of each game. We’re a program that has struggled to acquire support at times, so it really helps to have someone charismatic off the floor.
2. I have not watched a ton of Aggies Hoops this year but if you would have been told before the season, and then after going 0-3 at a Thanksgiving Tournament in Orlando, that A&M would enter the final week of the year 8-8 in the SEC, what would you have thought about that?
I would have laughed you out of the room. The mood around College Station was dire after that loss to Fairfield, as some (myself included) were wondering if we really needed to blow it up to that extent to achieve our desired results. And the metrics... my word. A handful of models were calling us the worst team in P6 basketball, and one in particular had us almost 100 spots below the next worst P6 team. We now know that it was all worth it, but that was an interesting couple of weeks on the message boards, to say the least.
3. The Aggies seem to play just as well, if not better on the road than they do in College Station, is there any particular reason for that?
They appear to thrive on energy in the building, even if that energy is directed against them. Our extremely slow start sent large portions of our fanbase into “wait for next year” mode, and it’s been a slow grind to get those people to recognize this season’s improvement. Our last two home games have had better support, so hopefully that can translate to next season.
4. Last year’s leading scorer, Savion Flagg and Josh Nebo are the two guys that lead the Aggies in scoring this year. Just talk about their development and how they have evolved in their first season under Buzz?
These guys have had two very different seasons. Nebo has been solid as a rock all season, but Flagg has had some pretty significant fluctuations. We appear to be in an upswing, however, as he’s 10-12 from beyond the arc in his last two games. He’s starting to show the form that made him a preseason All-SEC 2nd team selection, and he’ll have to continue to do so if we’re going to have a chance in this one.
5. A&M has won in Tuscaloosa and they have won in Knoxville. What does A&M have to do tonight in order to have a chance to win in Auburn? Do you have a score prediction?
Honestly, my prediction for this one ain’t great. The Tigers are looking to put a bow on an undefeated season at home, and I can tell that’s something y’all take very seriously. Pearl has built a great environment over there, and I imagine Senior Night will only heighten the festivities. We’re going to do our best to slow this sucker down and try to win a rock fight, but I don’t think it’s in the cards.
Prediction: Auburn 74, Texas A&M 65

California's Top Real Estate Agent
Tumblr media
Luxury Apartments in Los Angeles home market shows no signs of cooling. The average luxury home sales price in the city grew 10.5 percent — to $7.4 million — during the second quarter of 2015, while the average number of days on the market fell 11 percent (to 88 days), according to a Los Angeles real estate agent. Witness record-setting sales in some of the hottest markets — with many buyers paying all cash. "It's a healthy market, and there's no better place to invest," says John Aaroe Group's Aaron Kirman, one of THR's top 25 agents — presented here in alphabetical order — selected for their client rosters and killer deals.
Josh and Matt Altman
These star real estate agents moved their business to Douglas Elliman in February after nearly a decade with Hilton & Hyland. During the past 12 months, they have represented the unnamed buyer of Reba McEntire's Beverly Park home ($22.25 million) and Miley Cyrus in the purchase of her 5-acre vineyard estate in Hidden Hills ($5 million). Brothers Matt, a former talent agent, and Josh, who is writing a book about selling property, hold the listing for Denise Richards' nearly $8 million Hidden Hills home Residences at W Hollywood.
Santiago Arana
The Bolivia native, who moved to the U.S. short-term to learn English but decided to stay when he found his calling in real estate, was part of the team that sold author-screenwriter Victoria Foyt and director Henry Jaglom's Santa Monica home at 609 E. Channel Road — used in Beverly Hills Cop — in July for $23 million, one of the top sales to date in Santa Monica. "I'm having the best year of my career by far," says Arana. He also represented the buyer of Michael Strahan's $21.5 million Brentwood home and sold Dan Romanelli's Malibu estate to Lady Gaga for $23 million.
Joe Babajian
The hottest type of home right now is a one-story house on a flat lot with a promontory view over the pool, says Babaji. "You would think it would be common, but it's not," he notes. "That's been the formula for getting the top dollar." This year, he sold such a house in Trousdale Estates for around 3,000 dollars per sq ft — an original price per square foot on the Westside. He has a piece of land in Beverly Hills with an asking cost of $49 million in escrow, and he's listing Cheryl Tiegs' Bel Air home for $15 million. Previous sales also include Dean Martin's old home. "When I sold Nic Cage and Tom Jones' house owned before by Dean Martin, Nic walked through the house saying he had a vision of Dean in the house and that's why he wanted to buy it," Babajian recalls.
Ernie Carswell
"What I'm seeing built back up is a very different mountain than I've seen in my 30 years of business," says Carswell of the current real estate cycle. "This is a mountain of cash, not loans." He is representing Katy Perry in her high-profile attempt to acquire a former Los Feliz convent for $14.5 million. He also has begun working with a developer on Della Reese's old Bel-Air home, which she sold for $7.5 million in November. "Quickly built, fast money making doesn't interest me," Carswell notes. "Solid classics and something that will be here 100 years from now — that's what I want for me and what I want to represent when I represent someone else."
Chris Cortazzo
The Malibu dynamo, whose first client was Richard Gere, sold Gere's former $60 million Paradise Cove bluffs home to Jimmy Iovine in January. "That's a great way to start the year," jokes Cortazzo, adding that Malibu is only getting better: He auctioned a Frank Gehry-designed residence acquired by Patrick Dempsey for $15 million in June, and he's listing David and Yolanda Foster's Carbon Beach residence for $23.5 million.
Drew Fenton
Fenton, who has represented such clients as Christina Aguilera and the Osbournes, sold Calvin Klein a 9,350-square-foot view home in the Hollywood Hills for $25 million this summer. He also represented Nile Niami in his $9.5 million acquisition of Scooter Braun's Hollywood Hills home, and he's listing Simon Fuller's Beverly Hills house for nearly $19 million. His company is listed among the Top Real Estate Companies in California.
Josh Flagg
The Million Dollar Listing star says he has sold more than 20 homes at more than $5 million each this year. Among them is a Beverly Hills house on Tower Lane that he sold for $6 million — then sold again a month later for a million dollars more. Flagg, who remembers starting his career by putting together multimillion-dollar deals in his high school math class, also is preparing to list Andrew Getty's 8-acre estate in the Hollywood Hills.
Tomer Fridman
Fridman, who has a law degree from Loyola Law School, says much of his business has revolved around gated communities. "I think there's been a huge trend by celebrity buyers because of the privacy factor and the lifestyle factor," he says. "Their kids can ride their bikes in the street without being harassed by paparazzi." Fridman recently handled the $20 million sales of a Hidden Hills home to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West and represented Justin Bieber in his $7.2 million Calabasas sale to West's sister-in-law Khloe Kardashian. On the future of the Los Angeles market, he notes, "We've always been focused on the entertainment industry clientele, but we're seeing foreign buyers and investors and the need to have good access to an international clientele. Los Angeles is turning into an international market. There's a lot of spectacular new construction."
Aaron Kirman
President of global properties at his company, Kirman has shut down about 300 million dollars in sales this year and has a calculated $600 million in listings. He's listing the Danny Thomas residence with 360-degree views atop Hillcrest in Trousdale Estates for a rumoured $135 million. He also is co-listing Malibu developer and Sportsmen's Lodge owner Richard Weintraub's $60 million Malibu estate, La Villa Contenta.
