Shawn Bradley, Former NBA Star in Original ‘Space Jam,’ Paralyzed in Bicycle Accident
New Post has been published on https://newsprofixpro.com/moxie/2021/03/17/shawn-bradley-former-nba-star-in-original-space-jam-paralyzed-in-bicycle-accident/
Shawn Bradley, Former NBA Star in Original ‘Space Jam,’ Paralyzed in Bicycle Accident
Shawn Bradley, the former NBA player who appeared in the original “Space Jam” movie, has been left paralyzed after a January bicycle accident that occurred just one block from his Utah home. Bradley, who is 7-foot-6, was hit by a car while riding his bike. The accident caused “a traumatic spinal cord injury.” After undergoing neck fusion surgery, Bradley has spent the past eight weeks in a hospital. In a joint statement from Bradley and his former (main) NBA team, the Dallas Mavericks, the BYU alum was said to be “in good spirits.” The statement continued: “He plans to use his accident as a platform to bring greater public awareness to the importance of bicycle safety.” Also Read: Sabine Schmitz, ‘Top Gear’ Presenter and Race Car Driver, Dies at 51 Below is the full statement. Shawn Bradley released the first public details today of the accident that he suffered on January 20, 2021. Bradley, the 7’6” former NBA player with the Dallas Mavericks, was struck from behind by an automobile while riding his bicycle a mere block from his home in St. George, Utah. The accident caused a traumatic spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed. After undergoing neck fusion surgery, Bradley has spent the last eight weeks hospitalized and undergoing rehabilitation. Bradley, a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spent two years performing missionary work in Australia after his freshman year at Brigham Young University. Following his mission, Bradley was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers as the number two pick in the 1993 NBA Draft, but he spent the majority of his career with the Dallas Mavericks. His very strong sense of faith is being tested as he participates in grueling physical therapy and learns how to cope with the challenges of paraplegia. Doctors have advised him that his road to recovery will be both long and arduous, perhaps an even more difficult physical challenge than playing professional basketball. With his wife Carrie at his side around the clock, and supported by an amazing team of rehabilitation specialists and family, Bradley is in good spirits. He plans to use his accident as a platform to bring greater public awareness to the importance of bicycle safety. Bradley asked to convey his deep appreciation for the outpouring of well wishes and prayers he has received from family, friends and fans. Their support has energized his recovery and bolstered his confidence that he will manage the long process ahead successfully. He does not plan to issue further public updates, preferring to devote his full concentration on his rehabilitation. “We are saddened to hear of Shawn’s accident,” Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said. “Shawn has always been incredibly determined and shown a fighting spirit. We wish him nothing but the best in his recovery. He will always be a part of our Mavs family.” “We are deeply saddened to hear of Shawn’s injury and our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family,” his coach Donnie Nelson said. “In his eight-plus seasons in Dallas, Shawn demonstrated all of the qualities you want in a person representing your organization. He has always exhibited unwavering grit and determination and we are thinking of him at this difficult time. He is a Maverick for life.” Also Read: ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler, Boxing Legend, Dies at 66 Bradley, who was the No. 2 overall pick in 1993 behind Chris Webber, played in the NBA for 12 seasons across three teams: the Mavericks, the (then) New Jersey Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1996’s “Space Jam,” the Nerdlucks (the bad guys) stole the abilities of Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues in an attempt to defeat Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Tune Squad (the good guys). A “Space Jam” sequel, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” starring LeBron James, is scheduled for a theatrical and HBO Max joint release on July 16, 2021. Monthly Manga Review Index: May 2017
Spring house cleaning alert! In an effort to make the Monthly Manga Review Index more useful, I’ve reduced the number of categories from four to three. Those categories track closely with the original format: From the Top lists the first volumes of new and ongoing series; Ongoing Series focuses on later volumes of current titles, and From the Vault lists older series that are complete, unfinished but suspended, or out-of-print. Digital-only titles — once a separate category — are now flagged with an asterisk (*). I’ve also created a permalink for all installments of the Monthly Manga Review Index, making it easier for readers to find titles of interest. Last but not least, I added four websites to the blogroll this month: All-Comic, Anime Ushi, Manga Maniac Cafe, and SKJAM! Reviews.
Here at The Manga Critic, I posted reviews of The Emperor and I, a gag manga about a family who adopts a penguin; Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, a drama about an ex-con who’s trying to reinvent himself as a rakugo artist; and Delicious in Dungeon, a series about a quartet of adventurers who slash, fight, and cook their way through a subterranean world of monsters and man-eating plants.
REVIEW OF THE MONTH
Khursten Santos, manga scholar and hostess of Otaku Champloo, recently posted a hilarious, detailed review of Welcome to the Ballroom. I’d been on the fence about reading this series, but Khursten’s ecstatic descriptions of the dancing sequences convinced me to give it a try. “Seeing these dancers made me appreciate the power of lines and how they express movement,” she explains. “The weight of a line that flicks to a wisp illustrates a movement so rhythmic that it’s almost animated in these panels. A turn transforms into this complex movement that twists the dancer’s body.”
By the way, if you’re following Khursten on Twitter, be sure to extend your congratulations; Khurtsen just submitted her doctoral thesis! The subject: why fujoshi love Shonen Jump. Now that’s a dissertation I’d like to read!

2018 NBA Mock Draft
1.      Phoenix Suns: Deandre Ayton, C, Arizona
It seems like this pick is all but a foregone conclusion. Ayton goes to the Suns and stays in the state of Arizona. Ayton will be another building block for the Suns to go Along with Josh Jackson and Devin Booker.
2.      Sacramento Kings: Marvin Bagley III, F/C, Duke
To me, it seems the Kings will either select Luka Doncic or Marvin Bagley, and there have been mixed signals on whether or not the Kings are keen on Doncic. Either way, the Kings need an instant impact player, and Bagley can provide that.
3.      Atlanta Hawks: Luka Doncic, G, Real Madrid
Doncic could go anywhere from 1-4 with Memphis likely being his floor and Sacramento likely his ceiling. Atlanta seems like they will be deciding between Doncic and Jaren Jackson for the third pick. ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski “Woj” reported that Doncic had moved to the front of Atlanta’s draft conversations.
4.      Memphis Grizzlies: Jaren Jackson Jr., C, Michigan State
Jackson is a defensive monster whose 3 point shot is huge for today’s NBA. His ability to guard along the perimeter will also be tremendous toward his future success in the league. He could easily end up being the best player in the draft
5.      Dallas Mavericks: Mo Bamba, C, Texas
The Mavericks would be ecstatic if Doncic fell to them, but it seems unlikely that will happen. With what is left on the board for the Mavs it will come down to Bamba vs. Porter.
6.      Orlando Magic: Wendell Carter Jr, F/C, Duke
Hoops Habit had an excellent piece detailing the fit of Carter with the Magic and how Carter and Jonathan Isaac could grow together and the defensive potential the bring to Orlando will be significant. Its also known that the Magic have had Carter in for a workout, so there is interest in him.
7.      Chicago Bulls: Michael Porter Jr, F, Missouri
The Injury question mark is why Porter falls to #7 as he has an argument for the most talented player in the draft, but the questions regarding his back injury are very real. The Bulls seem like they love Porter and if available at 7 seems like they will be picking Porter.
8.      Cleveland Cavaliers: Shai Gilgeous Alexander, PG, Kentucky
ESPN draft expert Jonathan Givony said that “If Michael Porter is gone, it seems to be a toss-up at the moment between Young and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Cleveland at #8.” Givony gave Alexander the nod, and I do as well. Alexander has a few advantages on Sexton, the biggest being size. Alexander is 6’6 versus Sexton who is 6’1.5 and his wingspan 6’11.5 versus Sextons 6’7.25.
9.      New York Knicks: Kevin Knox, F, Kentucky
The New York Post had a piece recently saying that the Knicks were serious about drafting Kentucky forward Kevin Knox after a recent workout in which Knox was said to have been terrific from an NBA source. Knox is the second youngest player in the draft and has sky-high potential but also fits the Knicks need for a wing.
10.  Philadelphia 76’ers: Mikal Bridges, F, Villanova
Mikal Bridges is a prototypical 3 and D wing and fits perfectly with the 76’ers. Bridges is an elite defender while also being an excellent shooter hitting 43.5% from 3 point range. The 76’ers need shooters to help space the floor with Ben Simmons having limited range.
11.  Charlotte Hornets: Colin Sexton, PG, Alabama
At this point, it seems that Charlotte will take a point guard with the pick being Sexton. If Gilgeous Alexander were here, I believe he would be the pick, and there hasn’t been much buzz regarding their interest in Trae Young. With rumors swirling around Kemba Walker, it will be interesting to see if Charlotte could trade him for another lottery pick.
12.  Los Angeles Clippers: Trae Young, PG, Oklahoma
Young falling this far may not happen, but there are serious question marks on his measurable. his effort, and overall ability on the defensive side of the ball. At this point, it seems very possible Sexton and Gilgeous Alexander go in front of Young come draft night.
13.  Los Angeles Clippers: Lonnie Walker, SG, Miami
Walker’s stock is one that has risen throughout the draft process to the point that it could propel him all the way to the Sixers at the #10 spot. The Clippers look to remake their backcourt though Robert Williams seems as he could go here to replace DeAndre Jordan who appears likely to depart during free agency.
14.  Denver Nuggets: Miles Bridges, F, Michigan State
Bridges is a strong player and an explosive athlete who can guard multiple positions in the league. Bridges is also a capable scorer with solid 3-point shooting which helps fill the Nuggets need for a wing.
15.  Washington Wizards: Robert Williams, F/C, Texas A&M
The Wizards just don’t have an athletic rim running big man on the roster currently. Williams changes that. Williams has a limited offensive game but with time could develop into a capable offensive center to complement his defensive abilities. John Wall will definitely appreciate this selection.
16.  Phoenix Suns: Zhaire Smith, SG, Texas Tech
Smith is an explosive athlete with a ready-made defensive game. An effective scorer in limited attempts, Smith profiles as defender of multiple positions in the league and his offensive game should grow steadily in his first few years with more opportunity.
17.  Milwaukee Bucks: Jerome Robinson, G, Boston College
Robinson’s stock has skyrocketed becoming a likely top 20 pick in the draft. As for his fit with the Bucks, Robinson is an excellent scorer with an effective 3 point stroke. At this point, the Bucks seem likely to take the best player available regardless of position.
18.  San Antonio Spurs: Donte DiVincenzo, SG, Villanova
DiVincenzo’s claim to fame was absolutely crushing the Final Four. He scored 15 against Kansas and then exploded for 31 versus Michigan shooting 5-7 from three-point range in that game. The Spurs seem like an excellent fit for DiVincenzo.
19.  Atlanta Hawks: Troy Brown, G/F, Oregon
Brown is a young and tantalizing prospect who is a versatile defender. He experienced some struggles on offense at Oregon but should develop more while in the league.
20.  Minnesota Timberwolves: Elie Okobo, PG, France
Okobo is a relative unknown to me, but all reports seem to place him solidly in the latter part of the first round. With some comparisons to Deron Williams, it appears the Wolves could take a gamble on the talented international.
21.  Utah Jazz: Kevin Huerter, SG, Maryland
Huerter is a simple player as a threat on offense with a good 3-point stroke and an effort defender. He seems like a player who would fit nicely on the Jazz.
22.  Chicago Bulls: Chandler Hutchinson, F, Boise State
We know Hutchinson received a promise from a team it seems in the 21-30 range of the first round and many rumors are floating around that it is the Bulls. I’ll take the bait. Hutchinson is a pro-ready wing who immediately helps the Bulls, and at this point, that’s what the Bulls need.
23.  Indiana Pacers: Aaron Holiday, PG, UCLA
Both Darren Collison and Cory Joseph are free agents after this season making point guard an immediate need for the Pacers. Holiday is an effort defender with a nice 3-point stroke. It seems like he could flourish playing next to a star like Oladipo.
24.  Portland Trailblazers: Khyri Thomas, G, Creighton
Thomas is a really solid player and would be able to slide right in. He’ll be able to fill the role of a competent defender with good scoring ability and should be able to contend for minutes in the rotation early in his career.
25.Los Angeles Lakers: Mitchell Robinson, C, Chalmette HS (Chalmette, Louisiana)
The Lakers seem like they will either land Kawhi Leonard or LeBron – maybe even both – when the free agency period begins. Here, the Lakers take a gamble on Robinson. He didn’t play college ball this year after deciding to instead train for the NBA draft.
26.  Philadelphia 76’ers: Grayson Allen, G, Duke
With this pick, the 76’ers double down on shooting. Allen is a competitor and one of the most pro-ready players in the draft. He can make an immediate impact for the team by surrounding Ben Simmons with more offensive options to assist.
27.  Boston Celtics: Moritz Wagner, F/C, Michigan
Wagner had a really solid postseason run for the Wolverines showcasing his abilities on the offensive end of the court and his rebounding on the defensive ends. There are a couple of questions that arise over his defense, but at this spot, the Celtics need to find a player who has the possibility of turning into something.
28.  Golden State Warriors: Jacob Evans III, F, Cincinnati
The Warriors don’t have a lot of holes on their roster. The only possible ones could come if the team doesn’t retain Patrick McCaw or Kevon Looney. With Evans, the champs receive a do-it-all forward with the ability to guard multiple positions and while also shooting 39.4% from 3.
29.  Brooklyn Nets: Hamidou Diallo, G, Kentucky
Diallo should have stayed in the draft last year, and it hurt his stock to come back to Kentucky, but his ceiling is exceptionally high. He is an explosive athlete who could be a very good 3 and D wing for the Nets.
30.  Atlanta Hawks: Josh Okogie, G, Georgia Tech
The Hawks stay in state with Georgia Tech’s Josh Okogie. Okogie is a two-way player who needs refinement on offense but should be a ready-made defender in the league. He helps add another defender on the wing for the Hawks making it two in this mock.
The NBA Draft is being held June 21, 2018, at 6:00pm (Central) in Brooklyn, NY and will be broadcast on ESPN. Free stream here.

Week 7 Fantasy Busts: Fitzgerald's second-half slide to start vs. L.A.
Tumblr media
Larry Fitzgerald posted legendary numbers last week, but he comes back down to earth in Week 7. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri)
Week 7 Fantasy Lames: Fitz, Hilton pair of untrustworthy top WRs
Each week the Noise highlights 10 somewhat un-obvious names whom he believes are destined to implode leave egg on his face. To qualify, each player must be started in at least 50 percent of Yahoo leagues. Speaking as an accountability advocate, I will post results, whether genius or moronic, the following week using the scoring system shown here (Thresholds – QB: 18 fpts, RB: 12 fpts, WR: 11 fpts, TE: 10 fpts). If you’re a member of TEAM HUEVOS, reveal your Week 7 Lames in the comments section below.
Alex Smith, KC, QB (52 percent started; Yahoo DFS: $36) Matchup: at Oak
The fire lit under Smith’s behind has transformed the passer from passive game manager to aggressive multidimensional boss. Similar evolutions, for a player in Year 13 no less, are extremely rare. Whether it’s the presence of rocket-armed rookie Patrick Mahomes, increased bevy of explosive weapons or Andy Reid’s direction, Smith is undeniably a different quarterback. His 8.5 yards per attempt (6.9 career), 9.8 air yards per attempt (6.7), 72.9 completion percentage (62.2), 6.3 TD percentage (3.9) and 119.2 passer rating (86.8) are well above career norms. Frankly, it’s shocking to see him rank QB3 this late in the season. He regressed a little last week against the league’s top pass defense, Pittsburgh, but all expectations have him regaining his QB1 form on the road in Oakland. The Raiders, largely due to dustings of David Amerson, have allowed 8.0 yards per attempt this season. However, they’ve surrendered only two multi-TD passers this season and rank inside the top-third in fewest fantasy points allowed to QBs. Amerson is still a liability, but T.J. Carrie (Zero TDs allowed) and safety Reggie Nelson continue to pick up the slack. Given the short week and common underachievement witnessed on #TequilaThursday, Smith may only post marginal results.
Fearless Forecast: 242 passing yards, 1 passing touchdown, 0 turnovers, 14 rushing yards, 15.1 fantasy points
Doug Martin, TB, RB (69 percent started; Yahoo DFS: $21) Matchup: at Buf
The end result of voraciously consuming 20 pounds of poutine. That repulsive imagery, my fellow fantasy friends, is what Martin’s final line will resemble in Buffalo. Port-a-potty jumps for the Bills Mafia, presumably riled up on Fireball shots and extreme bravado, will be more forceful than previously imagined. Tampa travels to Western New York a wounded bunch. Various injuries on defense combined with the dinged wing of its star quarterback, Jameis Winston, surely has a well-rested Bills defense feeling especially confident. Since returning from suspension, Martin has played commendably, netting 146 combined yards and a pair of touchdowns on 57.1 percent of the opportunity share. He’s also chipped in an appreciable 2.6 yards after contact per attempt. His two evaded tackles, three drops and 44 percent success run rate (From Sharp Football) leave much to be desired, but he’s the unquestioned top option in Tampa’s backfield. Still, with a limited pass-catching role, he’s rather TD dependent, the LeGarrette Blount of Florida. Buffalo, which has routinely plugged gaps thanks to Kyle Williams, should deny Martin from crossing the chalk. On the year, it’s surrendered the seventh-fewest fantasy points, 3.76 yards per carry and 77.4 rushing yards per game to opposing rushers. Unless Winston, or Ryan Fitzpatrick, comes out firing and stretches the field, it seems unlikely Martin tucks inside the RB2 class in Week 7.
Fearless Forecast: 13 carries, 61 rushing yards, 1 reception, 7 yards, 0 touchdowns, 7.3 fantasy points
DeMarco Murray, Ten, RB (85 percent started; Yahoo DFS: $22) Matchup: at Cle
At the altar of the fantasy gods, Derrick Henry enthusiasts are sacrificing chicken wings, barley pops and jerseys of man-crushes come and gone. They desperately want the rancor to leave his pit. His game-clinching 73-yard rumble into the end zone against Indy last Monday only enhanced their pleas. It’s possible Henry could chip away at the incumbent’s 59 percent opportunity share starting this week, but it seems unlikely. Though Murray’s tender hamstring is bothersome and his rather bland secondary metrics (2.3 YAC/att, 0.13 TA/att) prompt many questions, he’s the presumed lead back for the foreseeable future. Whether or not the tide shifts in Week 7, neither rusher is particularly bankable against the Browns. Yes, you read that correctly. Cleveland’s front is one to fear. Danny Shelton and Jamie Meder are two of the game’s best interior run defenders. Both rank top-10 in run-stop percentage according to Pro Football Focus. As a team, the Browns have conceded the ninth-fewest fantasy points, 3.09 yards per carry and only two rushing touchdowns to RBs. Murray, as always, will contribute useful numbers in the pass game, but with Marcus Mariota pocket tied, the Titans ground game is a bit more predictable.
Fearless Forecast: 13 carries, 52 rushing yards, 4 receptions, 18 receiving yards, 0 touchdowns, 9.0 fantasy points
T.Y. Hilton, Ind, WR (96 percent started; Yahoo DFS: $22) Matchup: vs. Jax
Whether it’s the pool, concierge service or eucalyptus shampoo, amenities are the key to a quality hotel. This season, the Indianapolis Hilton has provided owners with occasional luxuries — a massive targets share, 93.2 yards per game and a borderline WR1 output. And he’s accomplished all of it without Andrew Luck. Though Jacoby Brissett hasn’t exactly been the Motel 6 of quarterbacks, he and Hilton may temporarily shutter their doors against one of the league’s best defensive secondaries. Under Tom Coughlin, Jacksonville has reinvented itself. Gone are the days of it being a punching bag for opposing offenses. Jalen Ramsey, A.J. Bouye and Barry Chruch have stifled the competition. Ramsey and Bouye specifically have conceded a combined 34.8 passer rating and 39.7 catch percentage to their assignments. For Blake Bortles’ sake, it’s a good thing he wears the same colors. Collectively, the Jags rank No. 3 in fewest fantasy points allowed to wide receivers. DeAndre Hopkins and Antonio Brown are the only receivers to cross the 10-fantasy point threshold against them. Hilton is sure to entice his usual 8-12 targets workload, but, for DFS purposes, he won’t provide plush accommodations for his investors.
Fearless Forecast: 5 receptions, 55 receiving yards, 0 touchdowns, 8.0 fantasy points
Larry Fitzgerald, Ari, WR (97 percent started; Yahoo DFS: $30) Matchup: at LAR (London) If Morgan Freeman, Carl Weathers and Clint Eastwood joined forces to tell the cinematic story of Fitz, Adrian Peterson and Carson Palmer it would be completely appropriate. Call it ‘Cocoon 2017.’ The venerable wide receiver, much like his compatriots, has waded in the Fountain of Youth. Currently WR6 in terms of overall fantasy worth, he’s attracted a ridiculous 10.2 targets per game (22.6% of Arizona share, 10 inside the red zone), caught seven balls per game, tallied 77.5 yards per contest and found the end zone three times. As he’s done the past several seasons, he’s tearing up the early slate. But his predictable second-half downturn is on the horizon, possibly starting this week. The Rams’ clear defensive weakness is in the trenches, but they typically stymie the pass. Through six weeks, they rank No. 7 in fewest fantasy points allowed to WRs and have given up a mere 55.0 catch percentage. Drilling down, slot corner Nickell Robey-Coleman has built a blockade around his assignments, surrendering a 50.6 passer rating, 63 yards (on 10 receptions) and zero touchdowns. Fitz will shift about, but primarily locked in the slot (60.2 percent of the time), he’s sure to come back down from last week’s euphoric 10-138-1 line.
Fearless Forecast: 6 receptions, 64 receiving yards, 0 touchdowns, 9.4 fantasy points

Fantasy Basketball position tiers: Point guard values for 2017-18
Tumblr media

Alex Rikleen, RotoWire Special to Yahoo Sports
Before we get into the 2017-18 point guard tiers, here are a few notes to keep in mind:
Overall, the tiers cover players projected to rank roughly among the top 120 overall. Within each tier, players are generally listed in the order in which they should be drafted. Of course, come draft night, team construction and roster constraints must be take into account.
[Now’s the time to sign up for Fantasy Basketball! Join for free]
Unless otherwise noted, players are listed only within the positions at which they are currently eligible in Yahoo Fantasy Basketball leagues. Tiers and season rankings are tailored to nine-category league settings.
Most players are ranked within the tiers at more than one position, rather than only their primary position, which is oftentimes arbitrary. Players who do not have multiple-position eligibility are denoted with an asterisk.
[Positional tiers: PGs | SGs | SFs | PFs | Cs]
Tier I: Possible No. 1 Overall Picks
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks Stephen Curry, Warriors James Harden, Rockets Russell Westbrook, Thunder*
Curry has been a top-15 player every year since he entered the league, and a top-four guy in each of the past five seasons. Harden and Westbrook both turn the ball over at high rates, but both have also been top-five players in eight-category settings over the past three seasons.
Of the four, Westbrook is the only one eligible at point guard only. Coming off of one of the best individual seasons in NBA history, a regression seems likely, though that could still mean double-digit assist production.
Currently, Antetokounmpo is only eligible at power forward and small forward, but the probability that he adds point guard eligibility as the season goes on means he warrants inclusion here, too.
Tier II: First-Round Values
Damian Lillard, Trail Blazers* John Wall, Wizards*
Though not candidates for the first overall pick, both of these players are great options for managers selecting late in the first round. Both are strong across almost every category, and have the ability to rank among the league leaders in one specific category – threes for Lillard, assists for Wall. Wall is a high-turnover player better-suited to eight-category play, but he is still an excellent option in nine-category settings.
Tier III: Elite Options
Chris Paul, Clippers Kyle Lowry, Raptors* Kyrie Irving, Celtics
These stars should not be taken in the first round, but they are still elite fantasy options who can carry a roster.
Paul and Lowry were both first-round values last season, but they have lengthy injury histories that should knock them out of consideration for teams’ first selections. Paul could suffer from joining another ball-dominant guard in Harden, but both players are elite spot-up shooters, and their minutes will likely be staggered to ensure one is handling the ball at almost all times.
Lowry is unlikely to beat out the 37.4 minutes per game he averaged in 2016-17, but the Raptors lost backcourt depth this offseason, so he’s also unlikely to suffer a significant drop.
Irving’s injury history is similarly checkered, and it has been years since he posted first-round value, but his trade to the Celtics provides a boost in value. Irving’s usage rate with LeBron James off the court was 44.5 percent last season, and he figures to be the primary offensive option for the Celtics.
Tier IV: Borderline All-Stars
C.J. McCollum, Trail Blazers Isaiah Thomas, Cavaliers* Kemba Walker, Hornets* Mike Conley, Grizzlies*
Conley and Walker are two of the most underrated, under-appreciated players in the league. That helps savvy fantasy managers, since it is a big reason why these reliable studs are available in late third or early fourth rounds.
Thomas’s perceived value is likely to fall now that he’s a secondary offensive threat for the Cavaliers, as opposed to being the primary load-bearer for the Celtics. Thomas’ value should rightly fall, but the perceived drop is likely to be larger than warranted. McCollum lives largely in Lillard’s shadow, but the gap between the two Blazers stars has narrowed over the last two seasons.
Tier V: High-Quality Starters
Eric Bledsoe, Suns Jeff Teague, Timberwolves* Jrue Holiday, Pelicans Goran Dragic, Heat
Not only is this tier less-talented than the one above it, but there is something problematic about each of these players’ settings that could hurt their fantasy value. Holiday will likely have to spend a lot of time playing out of position in the wake of the Rajon Rondo signing, Dragic is now 31, and if Tyler Johnson and Josh Richardson are healthy, his minutes could decrease.
Bledsoe is another player with a lengthy injury history, and backup Tyler Ulis showed flashes that he might be talented enough to ease Bledsoe’s workload in what will probably be another lottery season. Teague’s assist totals could increase playing with three All-Star-caliber talents, but he’ll probably have to give up some touches and shot attempts in the process.
Tier VI: High Upside, Sturdy Floors
Avery Bradley, Pistons Zach LaVine, Bulls Ricky Rubio, Jazz* Patrick Beverley, Clippers Victor Oladipo, Pacers D’Angelo Russell, Nets Jeremy Lin, Nets Dennis Smith, Jr., Mavericks*
When drafting a bottom-half fantasy starter, it’s comforting to feel like the player will remain a roster mainstay throughout the season, even if they don’t deliver on their more optimistic projections. These players provide that reassuring floor.
With that in mind, LaVine probably has the lowest floor of the group, given that he’ll miss a chunk of the season after tearing his ACL. But once he returns, he could be the No. 1 option for the lottery-bound Bulls.
As a rookie, it’s not totally fair to say Smith has an overly high floor, as rookies are inherently risky fantasy options. That said, Smith is by far the most talented point guard in Dallas, and he’s, without question, the first rookie worth taking in standard redraft leagues.
Tier VII: High-Risk, High-Reward
George Hill, Kings Elfrid Payton, Magic* Rajon Rondo, Pelicans* Dennis Schroder, Hawks* Lonzo Ball, Lakers* Markelle Fultz, 76ers* Ben Simmons, 76ers
Again, rookies are risky. But Ball, Fultz, and Simmons, who could end up with point guard eligibility, are dynamic options who have potential to take the fantasy world by storm. All three have clear paths to major roles right way and should provide reasonable value in multiple categories.
Meanwhile, Schroder and Payton should play big minutes on bad teams, with Schroder looking like he’ll be the Hawks’ No. 1 option. Always a wild card, Rondo is an odd fit playing alongside Holiday, and it’s hard to anticipate which version of Rondo will show up – the top-50 player in Sacramento, or the fantasy bust in Chicago and Dallas. Err on the side of caution.
Tier VIII: Flawed Fantasy Starters
Dwyane Wade, Bulls Malcolm Brogdon, Bucks Seth Curry, Mavericks Tyler Johnson, Heat Marcus Smart, Celtics* Darren Collison, Pacers Reggie Jackson, Pistons
Smart is perhaps the steadiest player in this tier, but his atrocious field goal percentage means he could harm some teams as much as he could help others. Boston parting ways with Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder should give Smart a boost, but he’ll face stiff competition from Terry Rozier and Jaylen Brown, as well as coveted rookie Jayson Tatum.
Tier IX: Low-end Roster Fillers
Jamal Murray, Nuggets De’Aaron Fox, Kings* Jordan Clarkson, Lakers Ish Smith, Pistons Lou Williams, Clippers Frank Ntilikina, Knicks*
Murray could easily play his way into a higher tier, but his numbers weren’t as encouraging as his overall play as a rookie. The Kentucky product had some memorable performances but shot just 40.4 percent from the floor and 33.4 percent from three. If he can become more efficient and spend more time on the ball, Murray could be a late-round steal.
