More pages from my wife’s cryptid comic!! Our little Fresno Nightwalker, separated from his friend, wanders lost through a forest and encounters some spooky critters...
(Part 1 is here and describes what nightwalkers are; part 2 is here and describes what the Joplin Spoolight is; you can also see these pages on Instagram @Leah_Kristen12.)
Where could our little hero be headed? Find out in the next post...
Featured in this comic: the Loveland Frogman, the Rougarou, and the Jackalope. Want to know more about each of these cryptids? Look under the readmore!
According to Ohio legend, the Loveland Frogman was first spotted in 1955 in Loveland, OH. He stands about 4 feet tall and walks on his hind legs. In May 2014, the Loveland frog legend was made into a musical, titled Hot Damn! It's the Loveland Frog! In August 2016, two teenagers playing Pokémon Go between Loveland Madeira Road and Lake Isabella claimed to see a giant frog near the lake on August 3 that "stood up and walked on its hind legs.”
....
In the Cajun legends, the Rougarou is said to prowl the swamps around Acadiana and Greater New Orleans, as well as the sugar cane fields and woodlands of the regions. It is said to hunt misbehaving children or, more specifically, Catholics who break Lenten traditions. "Rougarou" represents a variant pronunciation and spelling of the original French “loup-garou.” How a person transforms into the monster doesn’t seem to be entirely clear. Nor is it clear if the rougarou only prowls during a full moon, like a werewolf. The Rougarou is apparently not good at math! Placing 13 pennies or rocks on your doorstep or windowsill was one tradition to protect your home from the Rougarou. Since it can only count to 12, the pennies keep the monster at bay continuously counting, until it has to retreat back into the swamps upon sunrise.
...
The Jackalope can imitate the human voice, according to legend. During the days of the Old West, when cowboys gathered by the campfires singing at night, jackalopes could be heard singing along. References to horned rabbits may originate in sightings of rabbits affected by the Shope papilloma virus. The virus caused “numerous horn-like protuberances on the skin over various parts of their bodies” that may have been mistaken for antlers. And of course, the early practice in taxidermy of combining animal parts to make fantastical creatures popularized the legend as well.

unabridged transcription of “Courting on Spooklight Road”
As many stories that have been told and written about Spooklight Road, none have ever established a definite date as to when the strange light was first discovered there. All the natives will come up with about th same answer “Oh, it’s been seen there for longer than I can remember.” Some may add that “I remember hearing my grandm other tell about driving out there in a buggy with her beau.”
What makes the road to the Spooklight so attractive to young lovers, (or maybe--)
Cut off a the end of the page
That Spooklight Road is the most popular Lover’s lane in the four state area. Certainly there are those who make the trip to the spot, who are not interested in seeing the eerie light as it floats and bobs into view. Surely the people who park there for varied lengths of time are not trying to fathom the age old (oystery). Could it be that they believe that the light is in some way connected to death and they think the old adage may be true that “Dead men tell no tales?”
Visitors of today see cars parked in the area whose occupants obviously are not concentrating on the mysterious light. Usually so engrossed in their own moods, de-
Interested in the mysterious light at all. Often by the time it appears, they have forgotten their original alibi for being a the scene at all. Thus, the appearance of the light has caused some interesting developments.
Automobiles are certainly not the first vehicles to carry lovers to the spot where they could enjoy a little “togetherness” away from the eyes of strict fathers, pesky little brothers, or nosy neighbors. Lovers parked there during horse and buggy days, for the same reason and possibly with the same desired effects as those who drive fancy sports cars there today. It is ian old and familiar story since the beginning of time.
Many comical and interesting stories are related by the old timers who have used the Spooklight Road for a trysting place in the long ago. Stories which they would not have dared relate at the time are now precious memories to be enjoyed by the participants, after the time element is no longer important. In relating such stories, it is not important that the parents of the young lady or the gossips in the neighborhood, get hold of the story and have a field day with it.
One such story comes from a businessman in Joplin. He lights his pipe, settles back in his recliner and relates and experience of his own which occurred on Spooklight Road. He still refuses to give the name of his lady companion.
It seems that the night was dark and a little foggy. The couple had drive Old Prince, hitched to the new buggy which was the pride of the young man’s father. After many promises to take care of the horse and the new buggy, the young man had been allowed the use of the rig to drive his sweetheart “to church”. It seems that young people then even as today, did not always plan to go exactly to the destination they had promised their parents.
After arriving at the designated spot on Spooklight Road, where they had been told they would be sure to see the mysterious light, they had stopped the horse, made themselves comfortable in the buggy and waited for the light to appear. For some time it had not made itself known and they were getting impatient.
The young man suddenly had an idea (which had possibly been lurking in the back of his mind all the time.) Why not take the lap-robe, which all well equipped buggies carried, and spread it on the ground where they “could be more comfortable?”
The idea sounded like a good one and soon they were seated on Dad’s new lap-robe, on a grassy mound a few feet from the roadway. Old Prince was standing listlessly by, awaiting orders from his driver. He was half asleep, which is more than can be said of his young master seated with his sweetheart on the grass. Engrossed in his sweet talking his girl friend, neither he, the girl or the horse saw the approaching Spooklight.
Old Prince saw the approaching light first. Aware that it was like nothing he had ever seen before, he used the “horse sense” that God gave him and departed the scene immediately. His hoofbeats, the rattling of the empty buggy as it made its departure, attracted the attention of the couple who would have been happier had it not occurred at that particular time.
The Light came within a few feet of the startled couple and stopped as if reviewing the situation. The couple were too scared to speak, even if they could have found any words. In a moment it was gone but so was Old Prince and their only means of getting home!
They discussed their embarrassing predicament and decided that there was only one theing to do. Start walking with the hope that the horse had stopped a little way down the road. They started out, the girl in her best patent leather slippers, trying to cope with the rough terrain, the green briars and the knowledge that snakes lurk in high grass. The young man seemed only to be armed with an effort to fabricate a story that his dad would accept when and if, he ever got home again. The horse, being the smarter and the fastest of the trio had headed for the home corral. They did not catch him before they had walked the distance of five miles, carrying the lap-robe which had looked so inviting in the beginning and was a hated burden before the fateful night was over.
The results seemed to be that the father grounded his son for a long period of time. He was not too much inconvenienced by the punishment. He didn’t have any girl to accompany him on rides anyway. Her parents had attended to that matter after the episode had been explained to them by a tearful and repentinent daughter.
just spent 7 hours of my life researching something, 5 of those hours specifically spent scouring the internet for the presence of one (1) man who might have access to a source i can’t seem to find proof of elsewhere only to find 11/60 or so pages from the thing
#i spent 7 HOURS of my life stalking a man to try and find the scans of this#still only have some of the pages but like here's a funnie story

THE HAUNTED SENATH SPOOKLIGHT ROAD - near Senath, Missouri. The sun sets on Dunklin County Road 602 near the small, rural town of Senath in the bootheel of Missouri. This dusty farm road/Lover’s Lane has long had a reputation for being haunted. Local folklore and witness tales contend that along this four-mile stretch of CR602 can be encountered a myriad of supernatural activity: glowing tombstones in a haunted cemetery, an ominous hanging tree, a possessed church, a mournful cry-baby bridge, and luminous spooklight orbs that are seen to flit-about and stall car engines. Most visitors come to look for the spooklights (referred to as the “Senath Lights” or the “Hornersville Lights” or the “Arbyrd Lights” depending on which nearby townsperson is providing direction or telling a tale) - mysterious “basketball-sized glowing balls” which can be encountered in the dark of night when facing westward. The cause of the alleged spooklights remains unproven - perhaps it’s just another imagined urban legend of a headless ghost or some natural phenomena as yet understood - but, it is interesting to note that the road alignments and distances match other such spectral venues, like the “Hornet Lights” near Joplin, Missouri at the other end of the state. The answers lie somewhere in the dark, along this lonely road. The Spooklight
The Spooklight, also called the Hornet Spooklight, Hollis Light and Joplin Spook Light, is a light that appears in a small area known locally as the "Devil's Promenade" on the border between southwestern Missouri and northeastern Oklahoma west of the small town of Hornet, Missouri.
The Spooklight is commonly described as a single ball of light or a tight grouping of lights that is said to appear in the area regularly, usually at night.
Its color is also not consistent: some eyewitnesses report a greenish glow while others describe it as orange, red, yellow, or even blue. It is almost always said to be in the shape of a ball, although some say it more resembles a camping lantern traveling a couple of feet off the ground.

13 and 15 for the witchcraft ask?
=^O wow my first ask over here!! Hello!!!
13: Are you a polytheist? What god(s)/pantheon(s) do you follow?
I believe many exist, but not following any at this point in time. I've heavily considered converting to Judaism tbh, I really feel drawn towards it but the idea of worshipping anything in general is a bit intimidating to me.
15: Do you have a favorite piece of local folklore?
Oh, local? The Joplin Spooklight!
It's a mysterious basketball sized orb that's spotted in a more rural area of Missouri.
A description:
“Sometimes it looks like a lantern far in the distance, carried by someone slowly walking. At other times it appears to be a ball of fire hurtling at you with incredible speed — only to stop, skip around near treetop level, then zoom back into the distance. Occasionally, so I was told, it settles on the hood of your car, or dances off a little into the woods or disappears, then reappears behind you,” wrote a man named Robert Gannon, in 1965
