Firstly, I want to start with the warnings for this drama - because this drama is dealing with severe bullying, as well as sexual assault and domestic violence. And Netflix does not shy away from showing everything, and I really mean everything. So if this is something you have a hard time dealing with, this drama is not for you, just trust me on this one. Even I had to look away sometimes, and I’m not usually squeamish.

While this drama was a hard watch, in the sense that it’s so brutal, I really liked seeing the female lead just not giving a single fuck. She does not care if what she does makes is technically wrong - she wants her revenge, and she is going to get it. Don’t get me wrong, she is kind to the right people, but as she states multiple times herself: “I am not a good person.”

And this thing about being either good or bad is such an interesting topic. I think I touched on it in both Vincenzo and Your Honor too - good or bad is not black and white, and Dong-eun is most definitely that grey area where she balances on the edge of both. She never did anything wrong - she is 100% the victim in this scenario - but by choosing revenge, she suddenly becomes a vigilante in a sense, and that requires some morally bad actions. 

The people who help her in the end (and the people she ends up helping along the way, even though she has a hard time seeing that herself) are all victims too, with their own trauma and their own ghosts to deal with. They do not care that they have to join her in the grey zone, because they too have suffered and felt trapped in their own selves as victims. They want to take back their power.

Idk, I just really love dramas that have you rooting for a character who is morally grey, because it makes you think - how far would you go?

And while it is a drama about revenge, it is also a drama about healing - about allowing people to break down your walls and help you move forward to better places. About learning to love and accept yourself for who you are without the trauma casting a shadow over every part of your future.

The actors are phenomenal, absolutely blew me away with their raw emotions all around. Especially the younger actors were absolutely amazing, they must have worked so hard, and I hope they are okay after having to do the very graphic bullying scenes.  

In the end, I just want to mention that - in case you didn’t already know - this series is loosely based on actual bullying cases from South Korea. Bullying in their schools really do get this bad, and it is wild to me that kids are capable of this evil. Bullying should absolutely never be allowed. If you see something, say something. Don’t ever be a bystander.

Not many people are talking about this hidden gem so here I am, letting it out that it’s one hell of a drama.

I love how the younger versions of the main couple look so similar, especially Kim Hyun Joo and Sun Hwa. Ji Jin Hee has got not-so-asian facial bones that’s hard to find in other Korean actors but still Yeon Woo Jin carries the exact same vibes of being the nice guy. 

The actor who is playing their son, Yoo Seon Ho, is doing a brilliant job, with the high pitched voice and unstable eye movements. He is such a cutie IRl, though.

I am loving the office dynamic as well in the otherwise super tense CIO, the guy (Choi Dae Chul) who keeps snacking all the time, is slowly opening up to all the other warmhearted people in her core team, is such a delight. The potential office-couple of Bae Yoon Kyoung and  Kang Young Seok is adorable too. Their cute bickering is always feel like a fresh air. Someone please give Kang Young Seok a bigger role, his adorable dimples are such a waste for these tiny roles. 

The OST WHERE ARE YOU by Katie Kim, is a bomb too. The editing is quite top-notch, and they insert the OST always at the perfect times. It just gives you goosebumps when it goes:

I must’ve mistaken my best decision was just keeping lies behind a door, I used to believe my lie was perfect, until it was not.

Ji Jin Hee just keeps getting better like a fine wine, no doubt about that. It breaks your heart so much that he has to pay a huge price for his one lie. He had to put on a smile when his father was dying alone. The sweet family he protected with all his love and care, that is nothing but goals, is actually founded on a lie is devastating. and I love this thing about this drama. The corruption, politics, nasty NIS people and everything else does not matter at one point but this cute little family. 

His actions scenes are done so well, there is not a single movement that seem like, “Are you kidding me? He isn’t a superhero.” Every move is so well choregraphed, given his age and his background as an NIS agent. But still so realistic, he does slow down, he does get hurt and bleed. 

I am just not satisfied with how they are writing scenarios around Choi Yeon Soo, as the CIO Director. She was a pretty smart lawyer and suddenly after becoming the Director every move of hers is falling flat. I understand these are much bigger people and motives she is fighting against but still, I would like to see her win, on her own. With no assistance from her husband. Show us that badass bitch energy. 

Lastly, I hate that old NIS Director. He is either eating with nasty people, planning his next cunning move or recklessly beating around his underlings. I was fuming in anger when they showed how he slapped the female agent. I can’t wait for him to go down. His fake patriotism is so toxic that even it you are not Korean, you keep scoffing every time he says, “For the sake of this country”. Bitch, please.

7 times kdramas made us believe in true love

We all agree that kdramas have taught us many life lessons aside from entertaining us. One of the reasons we keep watching kdramas is the ‘true love’ bond or experience that are portrayed in most of them. And we have to admit it!! We absolutely love seeing the lead couple being lovey dovey and we also cry when they do.

No matter the genre, almost every Korean drama treats the ‘love’ topic really well and so well that we even want something like that in our lives!

There have definitely been moments in the kdrama world that have broken out hearts and moments that made us recover faith in humanity; this is precisely what makes us keep tuned and continue watching many of them. But these, just to prove that love may probably be the most powerful force in the universe.

So, here we go!

7. - City hunter- Kim Na Na being shot to protect Lee Young Sung

City Hunter is an old classic starring Park Min Young and Lee Min Ho who also actually started dating in real life after working together. They shared an amazing chemistry and we could tell they were truly in love.

One of the most iconic scenes in this drama is when Kim Na Na (Park Min Young) literally took a bullet in order to save Lee Young Sung (Lee Min Ho) and then just said “You saved me twice”. This scene broke our hearts and made us burst into tears. Furthermore, I think we can all admit this was an act of true love.

6.-100 days my prince- Meeting after more than a decade and falling in love again.

I know, I know!! Almost EVERY couple in dramaland has had an encounter/experience/meeting as kids; and traumatic or not that’s what makes them reunite again as adults. Even when this situation has become a kdrama cliché throughout the years, I still think it is a good way to denote the strength of the love bonds that can be developed between two people. I strongly believe writers ought to create different scenarios to treat this topic though.

100 days my prince tells a story of a young love; two kids, a prince and a noble girl, who share beautiful but also sorrowful experiences that somehow will make them separate. Prince Yool still thinks of his first love after their unfortunate separation and loses his memory through some circumstances many years after, but this isn’t a barrier. They meet again and fall in love, OVER AGAIN, without knowing they knew and cared for each other since kids. Can you guys tell me if this is other than destiny?

I think a most of us has dreamed of something like this at some point of our lives. Furthermore, the fact that two people are able to find each other, and fall in love again, no matter what, means they must have been under the power of two forces: destiny and true love.

5.-My love from the star- The whole plot tbh

It’s 2019 and ‘My love from the star’ was aired 6 years ago, so it’s officially an old classic. However, I feel like I really don’t have to explain this one cause during the whole series is more than evident how the leads deeply love each other. That’s probably because Jun Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun had such a great chemistry.

Idk guys but I can’t help but get soft when I hear this title, because it really moved my heart in a way that’s more than difficult not to love the couple or everything it possess.

Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun) could literally hear Song Yi (Jun Ji Hyun) calling his name no matter where he was, he rescued her several times and he was willing to do everything he could for her to be okay. Song Yi was more than in love, she cried rivers and rivers till they could finally be together.

Somehow I consider this drama had a ‘meant to be’ couple, since they ended up meeting through random situations, and more than randomly, because of destiny itself. This kind of situation gives us the ‘true love’ vibe we hardly get in real life. Moving our hearts that’s way is what irradiates the feeling that the reason why the main couple (sometime secondary couples as well) gets together is love.

4.-I’m not a robot- Love heals the wounds of the heart

Okay, first things first, I’m not a robot has the cutest couple in history as far as I’m concerned. There are also two main points of this kdrama I want to explain from my point of view. So, from what we can see throughout the series is Kim Min Gyu (Yoo Seung Ho) has a severe allergy to other human beings and he gets better due to Aji 3’s (Chae Soo Bin) presence in his life. For some people these may look like Min Gyu has a skin disease and Ji Ah is the ‘medicine’ he needs to cure it.

Nevertheless, I personally think that Kim Min Gyu has a psychological trauma caused by other people in his surroundings when he was a kid, that’s why he’s able to touch Jo Ji Ah when she pretends to be a robot without getting ill. What I’m trying to say is that problem was more a psychological thing rather than an illness.

No matter what the illness or condition is, what is remarkable from this drama is that directors and writers give us an important theme which is that regardless of how lonely and hurt you are, love can really heal the wounds of your heart.

Even though at the beginning the story is kinda sad because of the fact that Min Gyu thinks he is in love with a robot and also because of other heartbreaking moments, as the lead couple actually becomes a couple and they solve all their problems, we are able to see many tender and adorable moments that as a matter of fact, make our hearts flutter.

3. - Hwayugi: A Korean Odyssey- ‘Wait for me and I will find you’ promise

Hwayugi is a fantasy drama aired in 2017 until the first half of 2018 and it stars Lee Seung Gi and Oh Yeon Seo. Hwayugi, Hwayugi…This drama has several ups and downs but I guess it is good enough to be in this top. Aside from having such a bad finale, (which the writers tried to fix at the very end) Hwayugi sadly has also bad special effects, which is baffling considering they had a good budget.

Despite all these aspects I just mentioned, Hwayugi still has ‘good things’ to offer. Even though several characters die/disappear what comes behind all these situations is a well-portrayed friendship bond. At the beginning the relationship between the leads starts as a one sided love and then as a mutual love. Even though Son Oh Gong seems to love ‘Samjang’ because he’s under a spell, if we look further we can really tell he loves her for real. At the end of the series, he even gives her one of his eyeballs so he can find her in the underworld.

2. - Stairway to heaven - The whole series even when it hurts

Stairway to heaven is a classic melodrama and if you ask me, it’s probably the most popular kdrama worldwide. This was the very first Korean drama aired on Latin American TV and it got so popular that you can literally ask anyone and they will say they have seen it at least once.

And just because love doesn’t mean happiness, I consider important talking about this drama. First of all, Stairway to heaven has a killer cast and the story is beyond sad. Words could never tell how sorrowful it actually is.

I think the most painful thing in this drama is that the main couple is (almost) never able to be together no matter how much they love each other and how much they try. Song Joo even looks for Jung Suh after believing her dead and does everything he can till they can reunite again. This lasts a short period of time to discover Jung Suh has cancer and is gonna die. I mean, they literally have to face every barrier in the universe to be together and even at the end what gives them the strength to keep living is the love they have for each other, considering everything else in their lives is unfortunate.

The saddest thing is that the people around them would also suffer as well, especially Jung Suh’s step brother that somehow falls in love with her and even commits suicide to save her. But we are gonna talk about this last statement below.

1. - Stairway to heaven. - AGAIN

It has been more than ten years since I watched Stairway to heaven for the first time, and I still can’t get over what Tae Hwa did to let Jung Suh see the man she loves again. There isn’t anything else I have seen in any other drama that is to me more an act of true love than this one. (Even when it is such a sad and dramatic event.)

No matter how much I think about it, this is beyond miserable, considering Jung Suh never accepts Tae Hwa’s feelings because they are siblings but he still does all these for her. At the end this sacrifice is in vain because Jung Suh dies anyway. Such a sad story to be honest.

little women, ep. 1

When I first watched the trailer for Little Women, I was intrigued by the premise of struggling sisters navigating the mystery around a huge amount of money, and how it changes the lives of these three “little women” in the midst of big people with power, connections, and wealth. It’s not entirely a new concept, but I am such a sucker for kdrama sister portrayals that this was a no-brainer addition to my to watch list.

Sure, one can first get caught with matching the characters and scenarios with the Louisa May Alcott source material (who’s the Jo? the Amy? the Meg? the Laurie? etc.), but by the second half of the first episode, you get the sense of considering the story on its own.

And it’s good. It’s so good! I don’t expect myself to be able to sustain an entire series review, but I’d like to be able to take notes along the way. It feels like it’s going to be a great watch ahead, and I just want to make something out of my excitement. That said, be warned that the series in itself has a lot of violence, which might come up in these recaps, hence the tw tag.

We begin with our three sisters: the Meg, the Jo, and the Amy. Poor Beth, no counterpart in here. Or maybe there’s more we don’t know, because mysterious baby picture, anyone?

Among everyone, it’s Kim Go-eun that I was really looking forward to the most. I have never watched her past dramas, but I’ve been itching to see any of her work, and I felt that this role might just be too good to pass. I love the seeming naïveté of her Meg, whose Cinderella fantasies of getting married and being whisked away from poverty translates fittingly into our series’ Oh In-joo, dowdy green vest and tacky tulle skirt included. At home with her sisters, though, she can be straightforward and determined behind the smiley and meek behavior she shows outside.

When she cried upon seeing the contents of the duffel bag her friend, Jin Hwa-young (played by Choo Ja-hyun), left her, I felt as if we were witnessing only the initial unraveling of her character.

Nam Ji-hyun as Oh In-kyung is also riveting. This is my third Nam Ji-hyun drama and the other two had her as the childhood-friend-and-fated-endgame of a wealthy amnesiac. Here In-kyung is barefaced, buttoned up, but not quite sober. She’s an investigative reporter with a deep empathy for people, and a righteous understanding of the pitfalls of wealth.

I loved her scene with Great Aunt Oh. They’re just having breakfast and talking, but the way this was set up made me wonder if we’re supposed to look at how In-kyung was influenced by her aunt despite not having had the warmest upbringing.

Great Aunt also meddles in her love life, and we see the Laurie for this series, too. It’s Kang Hoon as Ha Jong-ho. When they met each other under aunt’s ruse of bringing a mistakenly delivered package, we understand that there’s history between them. In-kyung is at the tail of a highly tense investigation, and we can wonder how this might affect their relationship as the series moves forward.

I don’t have much to say about Park Ji-hu’s Oh In-hye just yet, except that I can certainly understand her wanting to make her own money after seeing her sisters toil to provide for their family. She’s ambitious and gritty and I cannot help but wonder where the story will take her character, especially with her association with who seems to be Park Jae-sang’s wife and daughter.

Wi Ha-joon is another actor I was excited to see in this series. I thought his character in Romance is a Bonus Book was compelling enough. His role as Cho Do-il is obviously different so I also cannot wait to find out more about him.

It seems orchids is a recurring motif in this show. From trying to google ‘princess of thieves orchid’, I saw some twitter threads on the repeating symbolism of this flower on the show. Since I’m behind watching, I didn’t read too far and suspended spoilers. Anyway… too many orchids. From the orchids in the office in the 14th floor to…

the wallpaper in Hwa-young’s apartment (excellent mirror-threshold blocking, by the way)…

and a blue orchid brooch on the suit of Park Jae-sang (played by Um Ki-joon). Yikes… Personally, I think orchids are also an appropriate motif in a tight environment of power and wealth. Orchids are expensive and requires a lot of precise care.

I cannot wait for the sisters to tie up the associations together. The context surrounding Hwa-young’s death becomes even more sinister in light of In-kyung’s investigation on the four money-related suicides from the Bobae Savings Bank Case.

Finally, what will In-joo do with the money that landed on her via yoga locker? Director Shin Hyeon-Min is after the slush fund, and it seems In-joo is in it now, too. Not to mention, she signed an account opening form for Hwa-young, so it seems like the money in the bag is not all there is to it.

Eun-Sang just kept touching her stomach like it would change the truth. She wanted to stop crying, even though the doctor told her it was normal to cry uncontrollably, because she didn’t want Young-Do to see her sad.

It was only two months. Just a tiny bundle of cells. She could try again. The platitudes didn’t help.

Hyo-Shin left to go find him for her. That was probably a bad idea but she...she hated the way he smelled and wanted him to go away. It was the same perfume Young-Do had on him last night. She wasn’t stupid. She’d met Jeon Hyun-Joo herself. She didn’t want to hate her newest employee. She didn’t want to be like Young-Do’s board members.

“When can I go home?” She interrupted the doctor’s explanation on something that didn’t matter.

“I want to keep you overnight for observation. Your blood pressure is a little too low.”

Eun-Sang just nodded and ignored the worried look Chan-Young and Bo-Na shared. Bo-Na told her she called Young-Do’s assistant. He would be here soon and...and she could cry with him and apologize. “Will you explain to my husband that it wasn’t the hike we took. He’s going to blame himself and I would...I would rather he not.”

“I’m sorry, President Cha. I can’t say that for certain.” He was cut off by the sound of fighting outside the door. For a second, Eun-Sang thought she heard Young-Do yelling. Bo-Na stood, handed Jae-Hee to Chan-Young, and confidently went to go see what it was. Her eyebrows were up when she returned.

“I think Hyo-Shin got into a fight with Young-Do.”

“Over what?” It didn’t make any sense to her why they would fight in a hospital.

“The one person they have in common.” Bo-Na just smiled and kissed her forehead before Eun-Sang could argue with her. “Let’s go, yeobo. Eun-Sang doesn’t need us anymore.”

She thought Bo-Na was wrong, only because she didn’t want to be alone for a single second, but the door opened and Young-Do came in, and she stopped seeing her friends as she started crying. Then he was holding her, wrapping her tight in his arms, as the comforting smell of just him, was close.

“I’m sorry.” He kept apologizing to her like it was his fault.

“I’m sorry,” she said back, just as many times, as she clung to him and cried. “I was going to tell you tonight. I bought little booties and everything.”

“I never would’ve taken you on that hike if I had known you were pregnant,” he said. It sounded like he was crying, too. “I knew you weren’t doing well. I had no excuse except my own selfish desire to bring you up there.”

“I don’t want you to blame yourself.”

“I don’t want you to blame yourself either.” Eun-Sang looked up at him and blinked the tears out of her eyes. That’s when she noticed the blood on his pristine white collar. It startled her and she sat up so she could get a better look at him. Young-Do wouldn’t meet her eyes when she touched it. “It’s not mine.”

“That does not make it better. Are you going to get arrested for something?”

“I don’t know. Probably not. There might be a story about how I punched the prosecutor general’s son, though.”

“Why?”

Young-Do swallowed and closed his eyes. “He hurt you. It made me angry and when I saw him here...I’m sorry. I was out of my mind with worry and I lost it. I have no excuse. I don’t know if I can apologize to him but I’ll try if you want me to.”

Eun-Sang stared at him for nearly a minute before she began to laugh a little hysterically. Young-Do looked confused but just held her when she tucked herself back into his side. She reached for his hand and held it tightly in both of her own. He pressed his lips against the top of her head and she felt that tentative declaration they both made last night. She panicked a little when he started to move.

“Where are you going?”

“This is a standard private room. I’m going to get you moved to something nicer, with more space, and a guest bed. If you have to stay overnight, I’m going to stay with you. There is paperwork that needs to be handled. It won’t take long.”

“I don’t want to be alone.” She felt so vulnerable admitting that but he didn’t dismiss her. He sat down on the bed with her and then raised his eyebrows at Hyo-Shin’s jacket on one of the chairs. She didn’t know what to do about it until there was a quiet knock on the door. Hyo-Shin came in and she tried not to wince at his bloody lip. He smiled faintly.

“I’ve changed the name on all of the paperwork. This won’t happen again. Eun-Sang--”

“I’m going to get her a better room. Stay with her until I’m done.” Young-Do walked out after giving Hyo-Shin the terse command. Hyo-Shin stood there for a moment before going to the chair containing his jacket and sighing softly.

“Are you alright?”

“You already asked me that.” Eun-Sang looked down at her hands and struggled not to cry. “This feels weird.”

Hyo-Shin’s smile was tight. “Young-Do thinks I’ve been hurting you. What did I do?”

She leaned back in the bed and closed her eyes. “I never intended to talk to you about it. You’re just too friendly with everyone, Hyo-Shin. So often, I heard how lucky I was you were with me and how I needed to be more accommodating in order to keep you. I thought my love for you was enough but there were times I wondered. I freaked out yesterday because I was pregnant and felt loveless. Young-Do...I love him and I wanted him to love me back. I didn’t know until last night that it was mutual.”

“Eun-Sang, your love was more than enough. I was the lucky one. You saved me after I lost him. I’m sorry I didn’t communicate that better.”

“I was jealous of who you are, Hyo-Shin. I know my feelings were wrong. I doubted Young-Do because I smelled Director Jeon’s perfume on him and I don’t want to doubt him. I was pregnant. I gave up my plan to have him cheat on me to activate the prenup. And now I’ve lost the baby anyway.” And her necklace. She kept reaching for it and it was gone. It was just a piece of jewelry but she felt empty without it.

“I’m sorry. You weren’t wrong to want to feel secure in our relationship. I...I’m sorry. I’m glad you two love each other. That makes me really happy that you both have someone to love.”

“Even though he punched you?”

Hyo-Shin snorted. “Eun-Sang, I threw him to the ground. You know I was special forces.” She did know that but she still felt alarmed. “He was distraught and the opposite of calm. In any other scenario, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. He really is that good. You needed him to have his head on straight and it wasn’t. I’m not pressing charges. There’s a video online if you want to watch it.”

“Not really.”

They lapsed into silence and she touched her neck again. “You need to convince him to stop visiting his father. He’ll listen to you now.”

Eun-Sang was too tired to argue with him. “Everything he says about his father is a nightmare. His mother…”

“I’ve been looking into her disappearance since I started college.” His voice dropped and when she looked at him, he was bowed over his lap, his arms resting against his knees as he stared at a point on the floor. “No one has seen or heard from her since the letter she sent Young-Do. It’s possible she ran away to another country and started a life there. But...she was a woman of very few resources and there is no record of her passport being used. I absolutely believe Choi Dong-Wook is capable of taking a beating too far and murdering someone. I wanted to rescue him, Eun-Sang. I don’t think I succeeded.”

“I wish you had,” Eun-Sang said. “I’m ill-equipped to try. I don’t think he wants his father back. I think he goes out of duty to an ideal. I want to believe in him, Hyo-Shin. That means trusting his decisions. He’s earned it with me.”

He just nodded.

“He hates you so much. Why are you still trying to protect him?”

“Why did you hide my faults from me?”

Eun-Sang rolled her eyes. “That’s different. I don’t hate you and you don’t hate me.”

“But love is there all the same. I can’t give up on him.” He sat up straight only to slump back against the chair and look up at the ceiling. “There is a part of me holding onto what we had. I want to believe it’s salvageable. I want to be his friend again. I miss him so much.”

He was close enough to touch so Eun-Sang took his hand. She held onto him for a few minutes before she let go. The door opened and Young-Do returned with a nurse and a wheelchair. Eun-Sang glared at it. “I can walk. It’s just like a period.”

“It’s not,” he said firmly. “If it was, you wouldn’t have passed out. It’s this or I carry you.”

She flushed in annoyance, especially when the nurse was clearly swooning at Young-Do’s declaration. Hyo-Shin stifled a snort and she shot him a glare. “Are there cameras?”

“Not where we’re going.”

“Fine,” she said and held out her arms. “You can carry me.”

Young-Do smiled for the first time since he arrived today and she smiled in return. He came over to the bed as she tossed aside the blankets. She had to admit, she felt very delicate as he lifted her up and nodded at the nurse to lead them to the new room. Eun-Sang noticed that Hyo-Shin silently slipped out. That was probably for the best.

The room he got her was ridiculously ostentatious and she immediately felt uncomfortable as he set her down in the new bed. It was larger and more like a real mattress but she just wanted him closer to her than he was. She felt vulnerable and needy and like he was the only one who could solve that feeling.

The doctor was there and hooked her up to machines and new fluids. Her blood pressure was still a little low and she felt exhausted all over again. She had to change her pad and she tried not to look at the blood and think of her lost baby.

Eventually, it was just her and Young-Do. She closed her eyes and then scooted to make room for him. “Come hold me.”

My thoughts on this drama :

Easy and funny, with a swtiched of rich heir scenario. His this, the rich one is a heiress! And Yoon Eun Hye portrays her very very well, even though the stereotypes are still there. I had some trouble with Yoon Sang Hyun, that I always found uselessly loudmouthed.

ohhhh.. this is difficult haha there is always some sort of drama/angst but here are some who weren’t all that bad :) (aka not that much drama and has a happy ending).

My overdue 2016 drama review...

My ultimate favourites of 2016 are:

2016 is really the year for drama lovers.

In the beginning of the year, we were still getting all heated up over the war between Taek and Jung Hwan. Unfortunately, Jung Hwan turned out to be the new Chilbong. Nonetheless, Reply 1988 was a great drama. A great great family-centric drama.

Around that time, Six flying dragons, one of the best Sageuk of all times, concluded. I think they did a really great job in the fighting scenes. I also liked how the script was written. Different teams, eg. Sambong VS Moomyung VS Bang won could be pondering about a common issue, and then they came to a conclusion at the same time, separately. Thrilling.

I have considered the two dramas above as dramas of 2015 and made a post about it last year. (here)

Shortly after, came the drama that made the biggest hooha in 2016. Needless to say Descendants of the Sun is the most hyped drama. Its nice to watch, but I gotta say the storyline was a little absurd. 

Comeback mister had a fresh story but bad luck with the broadcasting slot. Of all competitors, they got Descendants. So even though the rating was bad, the making of the drama is not. It was a touching story about two Ahjussi’s last moments in the mortal world.

Signal, another fantasy time-travel drama but not the usual stuff. It involves, two groups of people conversing across time-space. They didn't really physically travel through time, but their voices and their thoughts did, with the help of a magical walkie-talkie. It was the most thrilling drama of year 2016. I thought I was watching a blockbuster movie every week during its run.

Dear my friends is a dear story about friends. About relationships. Between husband and wife, between best friends, between parents and children, between siblings. Park Wan is a dedicated daughter. She cared not only for her mum, her granny but also the whole bunch of her mum’s friends. I cannot agree more that it is not within her responsibility that whichever Yi-moo (aunt, in Korean) is in need of her help today. Her cellphone number is not their emergency hotline. Sometimes I get frustrated that they keep bothering her in the show. But that’s because the scenario is just so realistic. You won't understand unless you are put in that situation. The angst between saying no and giving in to that soften heart of yours (and then grumbling to yourself why on earth you agreed to help in the first place on the way home, especially when its late and there’s still plenty of work that needs to be done).

Lucky Romance. Its quite entertaining to watch the female lead going around looking for a tiger (someone who is born in the year of the Tiger). Other things aside, I cannot appreciate the romance between Ryu Jun Yeol and Hwang Jung Eum. I cannot feel the chemistry. I’m sorry!

Oh Hae Young Again is partly fantasy. The deja vu part. 

I really enjoyed Squad 38. The conmanship is spectacular. Why can’t they just give us the OTP finale even though it was just an significant part of the whole drama.

Doctors. Argh. When it premiered I was in South Korea. I watched it on TV. It was so nice! The filming location was so pretty. The story is meaningful. But then gradually it got draggy. The progress slowed. I wonder why they kept it at 20 episodes if they couldn't but keep adding more filler scenes. 

The Good Wife. I haven't seen the original so I cannot compare. But among other dramas, I think it deserves more attention. The struggles of her and her children, her selfish husband and her best friend who fell in love with her, the characters, are all so realistic. She re-entered the workforce and needs to compete with fresh grads, at the same time, she needs to cope with divorce and household chores and an unforgiving ex-mother-in-law who would give surprise visits to her grandchildren intermittently. Technically, she isn't divorce yet, but she is thinking to. Her character is extraordinary, but also very human.

Bring it on, Ghost is the cutest drama this year. Apart from all the ghosts scenes, I love every interaction between Taecyeon and Kim So Hyun. Even though they had a 12 year age gap in real life, it doesn’t really show in the drama. In fact, Kim So Hyun’s character is older than Taecyeon. I have to nominate Park Bong Pal as the best boyfriend-material character of 2016! 

Age of Youth is a pleasant drama to watch. Its about strangers living under the same roof and eventually become friends. We have a flirtatious Kang-unnie, a stern Yoon-sunbae. There is a Chinese drama this year that has a really similar concept with this one, and its called Ode to Joy. I enjoyed that too, albeit a little long. Its also about 5 girls living together. Not under the same roof, but on the same floor of an apartment.

W is a drama I said many times that it is great in many ways but has its own unique flaws. It is so complex, there is no boundaries to the variability of game rules, so the writer gets too creative and at times, its hard to be convinced. For instance, after the reset, Kang Chul mysteriously fall in love with Oh Yeon Joo. Whenever I rewatched this, I have this burning question, who is the higher being? Is it god? If the writer is not the one telling the story. Is it that the illustrator has a spirit? Like in Transformers? Or what? Who is writing them? I figured it is the character’s will. OK. So the characters are telling the story. Kang Chul just got this power of will. Very convincing indeed.

Scarlet heart. Having seen the original, I have the rights to compare them! I’ve seen the original drama while it was airing back in 2012. So that was quite sometime back. The original felt a little more tragic than this one. Also, they talked more about the historical events in the Chinese version. In the Korean versions, emotions of the characters are the priority, and they handled this one well. I gotta say the fashion and music teams aren't doing a good job. The robes the princes are wearing made them looked like peasants, especially 13th Prince. Further, polkadots!! This printing technology aren't suppose to exist in the Goryeo Era, even Hangeul is not invented yet. And The OST team!!! Stop putting english lyrics in your songs!!! Its a SAGEUK!!! But I’m quite surprise that they can find an era that a Korean King had this many princes and their characters fit the Scarlet heart fiction so well. For example, what are the odds that both 4th Princes in the Qing dynasty and the Goryeo dynasty are both after the throne? At the same time, the biggest contender for them is both their 8th brothers respectively? I've never been exposed to the Goryeo culture before watching Scarlet heart: Ryeo. I always knew that relatives get married in the olden days. But siblings getting married? That’s new. Even if they are half siblings. They’re still siblings! And the fact that Yeon Hwa princess took Hwang Bo, her mother’s surname, as her surname from birth so that she could one day marry her brothers who took, Wang, the King’s surname as their surname. All for the sake of preserving the royal blood.

Jealousy Incarnate

I LOVE this drama very much. In the first part of the drama, I think I would choose Sun Woo over Hwa Shin. Then afterwards I think I won't choose either. Hwa Shin is good but he’s pride is torturing the girl. Luckily theres Chi Yeol around to kick his ass. Pyo Na Ri is an independent woman. She just had a crush for Hwa Shin for 3 years. 

Shopaholic Louis

I watched this right after Squad 38. In Squad 38 he was a conman, and in this show, he keep getting conned. It was so funny to watch him in these 2 contrasting situations.

The K2

People kept commenting this and said that Ji Chang Wook did better in this other show. But I didn't see that other show so I cannot comment. Comments aside, I think this show is a well produced show. I like its German OSTs (even though I would appreciate it if the singer try a little harder to pronounce the words properly), anyway, I wondered why German, and not Spanish where Anna was at in some parts of the drama. Senior Yoona did an excellent job. This is a weird character. She is clearly the villain. But at the same time, we see her struggles, so at some point I rooted for this villain. It is also rare that the villain is portrayed as one of the protagonist (as oppose to antagonists). Fighting scenes, special effect, cinematography were all well too. Feels like a blockbuster. NICELY Done!

1% of Anything

The MOST underrated of the year. Why is it on DramaX. This remake certainly deserves more attention. I have never seen a couple so lovely on screen before. It feels so real and genuine. I kept wondering what would Ha Suk Jin’s wife feel when she watches this (which was quite disturbing though, cos I keep thinking about it throughout the show). Yup, he is very professional so we will leave this issue at that. 

Weightlifting fairy

A story about college is ordinary. But one about athlete college is quite fresh. Even though I still think Lee Sung Kyung is too skinny for a weightlifter. But there are many categories in weightlifting, she just belong to the light weight types. Nam Joo Hyuk who almost became a swimming athlete is perfect for the role. This story is overall a light hearted one and it is a good compliment with the other complicated dramas that I watch concurrently, for example: Goblin.

Goblin

Easily my favourite drama of the year. Fresh and slick production. I won't comment more. Because I will next year end.
